Sullivan's in downtown Naperville is definitely a spot worth checking out, especially on a Thursday for their Happy Hour from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The bar bites are solid--let me tell you, the beef Wellington bites are downright delicious! The shrimp egg roll was also pretty good, a nice complement to the evening. However, the tuna poke didn't quite hit the mark for me; it was a bit of a letdown, but hey, you never know until you try, right? The ambiance was fun, especially when you've got good people at the bar to spark a conversation with. Even without snapping any pics (sorry, I was too busy enjoying the bites and the vibe), I can say this is a must-visit for a fun Thursday night out. My wife and I went to Sullivan's in Naperville during Restaurant Week with another couple and the meals and service was great. However, that changed when we went to pay. We split the bill with the other couple and put two credit cards in the billfold. When the waitstaff returned the credit card receipts to sign, I noticed my credit card was missing. I looked around the billfold and couldn't find it. Then I took my cell phone out and turned on the flashlight to search around the floor by our table and did not see it. I informed the manager, Sara, that my credit card hadn't been returned. She asked if it could still be in the billfold and I showed here that it wasn't. Sara and a few employees searched around with flashlights. Sara came back and asked if we checked under the table and I told her we did using a flashlight. She checked under our table and the floor herself with flashlight. Before she walked away, I told her I was very concerned that they lost my credit card. We asked if they checked by the station where they run credit cards and she didn't see it there. She said that the station was close by and walked away to continue searching. After a while, she came back and asked me if I might have put the credit card back in my wallet. I showed her that I didn't and told her again, that I was very concerned that they lost my credit card. Sara continued to search for around 5 minutes and came back and said they couldn't find it. At no point did she ever apologize for losing my credit card or offer anything for the inconvenience. I told her that I will have to report it lost or stolen and we left. Just before we got home, Sara called to inform us that they found my credit card under another table. When we went back to the restaurant Sara was at the door to hand me my credit card and I gave her a tip, to get different billfolds that have deeper pockets to hold credit cards. In a very unapologetic way she thanked me for my feedback. I told her that I felt she handled the situation poorly and again she thanked me for my feedback. I tried to explain how I will have to get a new credit card and update websites that we use our credit card for auto payments, but she didn't want to hear anything and then threatened me and said she would call the police because I was harassing her and the walked away. Really, they created the problem and not to mention the inconvenience on our part and she threatened to call the police on me. Normal expectations when dining at an expensive steakhouse extend from being professionally greeted when you enter, to being afforded efficient service, and then being provided with a top-notch meal. None of these three elements were met during a recent business lunch at this Sullivan's. When we arrived the hostess was missing in action. After about 4 minutes she emerged from a back room with an snarly attitude and seated us at a table in about the worst location in the almost empty dining room. She gave us the wrong menus. We tried asking for a different table but she was gone in a flash. After we self-moved to a comfortable booth, the server took our order and then the wait began. We waited and we waited. Finally I stopped our server and asked for some bread to which she said some was being baked for us. Then we waited some more. A half hour into the ordeal our salads came. Once salads were finished we waited again. Another 30 minutes passed before we were told there was a backup in the kitchen... confusing since only four occupied tables could be seen. Then we were told a party of 20 were there (somewhere). Finally our meals arrived. Rather than being medium rare, one steak was barely seared on the outside and the inside was stone cold and raw. The brussels sprouts were so salty they were inedible. The parmesan coated French fries lacked a single flake of parmesan. The entire experience was frustrating. Servers have attitude when you don't order alcohol. An American steakhouse with cheesesteak egg roll which is disgusting. Oysters were not plump, just glad I didn't get sick. Tomahawk steak were just full of bone and overcooked for the medium temp requested. Wild mushrooms were just regular button mushrooms. Chocolate cake were dry. Espresso machine were not functioning. I've heard nothing but great things about Sullivan's. My partner and I decided to make a reservation for a date night. The restaurant was very elegant and clean. A bit packed while we were there. We were a bit frustrated that we had a reservation for 8pm and did not get seated until 8:25pm. We just stood by the front door until someone came to walk us over. Once seated we were greeted and brought water/bread immediately. I ordered an espresso martini. The issue being the martini had a ton of ice chips floating around. My partner ordered crab legs and I had a steak (medium well). Our food took about 40 mins plus and when brought to the table it was lobster tails and a very well done completely brown tough steak. At this point we are already over an hour in and do not care to stay longer for a remake. The manager did correct the lobster and brought out crab legs about 15 minutes later and told us to keep a lobster tail. The crab legs were a good size and delicious. I however do not recommend the crab fried rice, it was cold and very underwhelming. I would only recommend the sushi roll and the banana foster bread pudding. Those were incredible! The waiter first asked if we were celebrating anything and we actually were (2nd anniversary) and they wrote us a note and sprinkled rose petals across our table. They also gave us a black and white picture to help us remember our occasion. The ahi seared tuna was very fresh and tender. Very easy to cut and the sauce is very good, especially if you enjoy wasabi. If you don't like wasabi I wouldn't recommend but I love wasabi and I also love the dish. Then I ordered a business lunch. There's multiple options, and I chose lobster and shrimp bisque, prime delmonico 8oz steak, and mashed potatoes. The bisque came in a bigger serving for what I expected. Each bite I had shrimp and lobster bits which elevated the dish even more. The mashed potatoes were also very good and buttery and the potato skins are a very nice touch. The steak. The freaking steak. Seasoned to perfection and cooked a perfect medium rare. The business lunch special was less than 40 dollars and I got 3 amazing dishes. We then got a strawberry New York cheese cake which was a nice top off to our meal. With the tuna, the business lunch deal, and the dessert we were actually full. Going to a steakhouse that genuinely makes me full is RARE. The portions were not small which I love the most. They were not stingy with plating. The drink that we ordered was the knockout. Pineapple martini, and there's a reason it's boxed on the drink menu. I highly recommend this drink especially if you are a pineapple lover. Overall, everything was great. So, we go to Sullivan's prob once a month for a great steak dinner. Last night, the New York strip was very chewy, so I realised that the time before, we had the Wagyu Strip, which for $22 more, is way way better. I think that you have to remember to get their top steaks, otherwise, you might as well buy a steak at whole foods and cook it in butter on your own stove. For $57, the strip steak was disappointing. The mgr did travel around to tables around the time we were getting our check, and we did not say anything, so that's on us. Our waiter only asked us to cut into the steak when it arrived to make sure it was prepared properly, which we did, and it was cooked properly. Course, cooking steak medium well, is in some ways, tricky, so a lesser cut of meat can turn dry and chewy. This experience was different than our previous ones in many ways. We arrived around 3:30 pm, and no bread service was given. When we asked a waitress walking by, she said that it was still lunch time, and you have to ask at lunch time. I thought, oh...I mean it's Saturday and we ordered dinner, so why would we have to request bread. All around us, people who arrived shortly after us had bread. Our waiter offered us two choices: sparkling or still bottled water. Since we're not in a third world nation, I said, may we have Lake Michigan water? Since when is it normal at Sullivan's to push bottled water? We ordered two glasses of red wine that were nice at $16 each, and a crab cake dinner for an appetiser $43. The waiter wanted us to buy a bottle of wine, but we don't drive tipsy. The crab cake was served on a huge platter with two tiny maybe bread plates for us to place our portions on. Eating the crab cake off the tiny plates was difficult. Seemed to me those were not appetiser plates. I thought, maybe we should have tried to share the large plate, in retrospect. The waiter tried to take the large plate before we finished and it still had a large lump of the tartar sauce on it's serving spoon, so we stopped him. Crab cake was scrumptious, although it is prepared with some type of cabbage filler so not as good as Ramsey's crab. Still, very good! Felt a bit like the waiter was unhappy with us for ordering the entree portion of crab cake, but we wanted two of them--not the one that is on the appetiser plate. We ordered the Bone-in Ribeye Cowboy Cut 22 oz which was delicious and the Prime New York Stripe Steak 12 oz not so great. We had to ask for steak sauce and the waiter asked us if we wanted A1 sauce. Really? I thought Sullivan's had sauces, so I said, doesn't Sullivan's have a steak sauce, and so he said, oh, yes. We ordered two sides: mashed potatoes and broccoli which were both excellent. I guess since we did not pay extra for a steak topper, we were offered the A1? Once, again--an odd feeling from the waiter. We did not order dessert. Total was $251 before tip. We tipped $50 cash (I used to waitress) but I have to say something was off re the service and the experience which is usually perfect. It felt like we were a bother to the waiter. I may have had a better meal experience picking up the food and eating it at home with our own bottle of wine. I think restaurants and their waitstaff have to realise that people do have options, which include not dining out. Anyways.......disappointing to see it not be as stellar as normal, but I imagine we will return....just not quite as quickly.... read more

Family and I have been going to Sullivan's for as long as I can remember for any celebration and overall, it's been great! Our experience today means we'll most likely never step foot in the place again...all because the GM is a truly awful person. We had just left the hospital after spending time with my dad who is basically in end of life care - very stressful few months of ER visits and care facilities and we figured Sullivan's would do the trick. We find a spot in the bar, I order a martini, and completely forgot I left my ID at my house in the city (for context, I'm almost 30 years old). Understandably, the waitress cards me and when I realize I don't have my ID, oh well, I can't order a martini. LITERALLY A NON-EVENT. She did, however, allow my boyfriend to order a martini for my mom who was not at the table and never ID'd her when she eventually got to the table and started sipping on the martini. Flash forward 15 minutes, my boyfriend orders a martini and I take a few sips to taste how it is. The hostess comes over, tells me "they" are watching me (including the GM) and if I take one more sip, they will ask me to leave. I was literally dumbfounded and apologized but like truly shocked at her tone and threat that "we are watching you". So my mom goes back up to try to get this figured out and remove the drink since it tasted bad anyway (the drink was still completely FULL) and as rude and sarcastic as can be, the GM comes through and immediately says "I'm not doing that for you". The got into a disagreement, she explained the context of coming from the hospital and being stressed that my dad is dying and the GM straight up says "I don't care" - meanwhile, the waitress comes over to us and says "I'm taking this" and takes the martini that my boyfriend ordered. We were treated like absolute criminals! So my mom is still arguing with the GM and explains that we love Sullivan's and we always come here for celebrations and asks why they said they're watching us and will kick us out and won't remove the bad drink from the bill and he just keeps being so sarcastic saying "first of all, we ARE watching you and she's had more than 1 sip" to which she replied that she didn't really want to come back again and he said "Good, we'd be very happy about that". The WORST PART IS THAT HE CAME BACK UP TO THE TABLE AFTER SHE LEFT THE CONVERSATION TO CONTINUE TO BE AGGRESSIVE!! He comes up to the table a few minutes after the initial conversation as we're respectfully trying to pay the bill to leave while saying something about his middle name being dick (?) and continuing to try to pick a fight with her which was OUTRAGEOUS and finally she asked him to leave the table to which he replied with a large clap "Have a nice life". He caused a scene in the bar and had people turning around as he was yelling. We were TRULY dumbfounded as to what happened! They could've simply handled it differently instead of threatening to kick us out, telling me they're watching me, and telling my grieving mother that they don't care that she just came from the hospital. IT WAS A NON EVENT that they literally turned into a huge, unhinged issue as if I was criminally sneaking alcohol behind their backs. There were a THOUSAND ways to handle this better and truly I would've expected this from some crap late night bar more than Sullivan's. The GM was a true sarcastic a**hole and made our night awful. Additionally, my king crab salad had SHELL in it which was not ideal to eat. Mediocre at best. Horrible experience. First off my husband and I only see each other 3 days a week. We dine out every Saturday. This has been our schedule for the last 10 years. That being said we our foodies. We have no problem spending money on good food. We have no problem eating at small establishments. It's all about the food. We have been to Sullivans probably about 7-10 times a year. Unfortunately the quality has drastically gone down. Normally, we would say nothing and try to enjoy ourselves. However, the last two visits were unbearable. Our steak choices always remain consistent. Mine a medium rare filet, husband a medium well ribeye. Both visits we had to send our steaks back. The first time our second round was edible. This second visit our replacement steaks were worse. Our waiter was new so service was also a bit off and slow. We were there for three hours and never had a meal. So disappointing and stressful. A wasted evening that we can't get back. We truly try to make the best of the little time we have together each week. The chef came to our table to check on our second round of steaks. He was very apologetic and agreed the quality was poor. Matt the manager came to the table and offered us a gift card to try again. The chef offered us replacement meals to go. When the bill arrived we were charged for the replacement meals. We asked for Matt again who did remove the charge but was then rude and said it was all he could do and that he went above and beyond and if we don't come back that's fine. WHAT!?!? We are happy to pay for what we consumed. Matt removed the entree charges the appetizer and dessert. Thank you. That was not necessary. Neither was your rude comment. My wife and got all dressed up for date night out. We decided on Sullivans over Capital Grill. Place looks so classy from the outside and always seems busy. Upon entering the hostess, a pretty blond young lady could not have been any colder to us. She said nothing to us other than "bar or restaurant" without looking at us. She sat us without ever making eye contact, smiling or saying anything more. She was seemed genuinely annoyed that we had the audacity to bother her. Horrible first impression. We then sat for 35 minutes with only getting water. However, the table next to us with people dressed for what looked like a fishing charter expedition were taken well care of. When our server finally arrived he was obviously stressed, very apologetic and a nice young man, but was unable to take care of us. We ordered a very expensive bottle of wine, however, that too took another 20 minutes to arrive. We had several other staff ask us if we were okay and help our server by taking care of us. Management came by our table dozens of times without saying a word. We ordered steaks and they were good but not great. Soup was good but almost cold, room temperature but it was impossible to get anyone's attention to send back. My wife loved her steak, mine was just "okay". Mushroom side dish was amazing as was the Caesar salad my wife ordered. We were there for more than two hours. Fact is, Sullivan's is not Capital Grill. Nowhere near the service. Food was good but when you wait that long and have front line staff who blatantly don't give a damn. It's hard to enjoy your night out. We sadly will never return. read more

This location is a bit far for me, living in Skokie, but I filled up the tank and attended a business luncheon here today. We were seated in a room on the side which was near the kitchen and we had two servers taking care of our party. We had drinks to start, before our choice of salad. I chose the Caesar which was really good, although my neighbor's mixed greens salad looked very good as well! We were given our choice of a filet or salmon, with their au gratin potatoes with bacon and steamed brocolli as sides. I chose the filet, which was tender and prepared perfectly! For dessert we had our choice of the key lime pie or New York style cheesecake with strawberries. I chose the cheesecake, although again the other option looked good too. I tried not to eat too much because I had the hour long drive home. It was a nice event and a great choice for the venue. If plans call for me being in Naperville again, I would definitely consider Sullivan's for a nice lunch or dinner. read more

We really wanted to be seated in the main dining room. She said there was no available space. Ok.. cool. No problem. We left. Out of curiosity I checked online to book a resy. There was tons of availability. We literally booked online and walked back in (all in under 5-mins). Now she was fine with welcoming us in. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. If I could do half stars it would be 3.5. It is a very nice place with a Large bar area. We went for restaurant week with a group of 15 (work event). The service was very good (it was a Thursday and the bar was full - restaurant 1/2 full). The staff was very attentive with regard to drinks and warm bread. The portions were a little undersized (my opinion) for our group. Dinner- options The salad was huge and very fresh The Shrimp and lobster bisque- I was not a fan of. It did have tiny bits of shrimp that were a little tough. The bisque was tasty but not in the traditional RICH and creamy way. Dinner- everyone had steak. Which was cooked to perfection but again- my opinion- it needs to be seasoned better and it was not the melt in your mouth experience I was expecting. More like your backyard BBQ quality. They serve it with a clove of roasted garlic- delicious and definitely enhanced the steak. Sides- the asparagus was a little tough and again portion for the group should have been more (5-6 stalks per serving dish to be shared) I'm sure they may have brought more if requested- but I know I would have taken more if it were there. The mashed potatoes (not personally eaten) did receive high praise from the group - but again serving size. This could have been due to it being the restaurant week menu. However, when I think traditional steakhouses, I think opulence. I think unbuckle your belt goodness. This was not the case. Dessert- Key lime or Cheesecake pie. Both were very delicious and perfectly sweet - the cream on the top was yummy. Parking- plenty of room in Naperville to park. The restaurant does not have valet- but the area does. There were 3 guys working (Thursday night) and for $12 plus tip was worth not walking in the cold! I may give it another shot- but wouldn't be my first choice. read more
