TLDR: yummy sushi. Skip the dessert. The good: The sushi was delicious. And great value. We came here one Saturday night and had the omakase (regular sushi one but they have premium sushi and sashimi omakase as well). The omakase came with an appetizer and a hand roll. The fish was fresh and the rice well made. Some might find the sushi to be on the smaller side Service was great. It was not noisy. The bad: some of the sushi has really spicy jalapeño or wasabi. That overpowered the fish. The hand roll was a spicy tuna which was also too spicy. The desert we got was green tea tiramisu, but it really should have been called a white cake with green tea frosting. The decor was neither here nor there. I was absolutely delighted to receive my sushi special. An incredible deal. Huge fat pieces of fish. I even liked the shrimp, and I usually don't like shrimp. Even the tuna roll was quality. This delicious sushi spot has a huge following despite being fairly new. The sushi is fantastic, the service attentive and efficient and the space is smartly decorated. It was date night and we made reservations to give this spot a try. So glad we did. The only downside was we were seated towards the back directly across from the sushi bar. It smelled strongly of fish which was not a welcome smell at first but as the evening continued we got used to the smell. It bears repeating, the staff is fantastic and the sushi was delicious. This was my first time getting Omakase in NYC and it was an amazing experience. The chefs were friendly, the wait staff and manager clearly explained all the courses to our table, and of course, the food was amazing. Some of the dishes were incredibly unique - I don't think you'd be able to order it anywhere else. All fish tasted very fresh. I will definitely be coming back here again. Sushi Ryusei is a cute little Omakase joint right near Grand Central. Perfect for anyone coming in to (or looking for an easy route out of) Manhattan. Came here to catch up with a friend of mine and we chose the sushi and sashimi ($115) tasting menu. The meal started with a delicious appetizer, including a pumpkin sort of soufflé that was absolutely delicious. I also really loved the cucumbers with seaweed. The second course was the sashimi platter (the reason for three stars) I didn't like anything on this plate, except the salmon. I also think it's a bit unfair that it says 7 pieces of sashimi and it's only three kinds of fish (two pieces each) and all are served at once (different than typical Omakase) the oyster was okay. The two fishes (amberjack and Bonita (maybe?)) were very fishy. My girlfriend didn't eat her second slices. The sushi tasting was fantastic! I liked it all. I love the way the chef treated the fish and he was very friendly. I wish he would have paired a few more pieces with the homemade jalepeno topping that was on the sashimi platter. That was delicious! Not sure I had a standout favorite piece but overall a nice meal. I'd recommend the sushi Omakase, not any Omakase that includes sashimi. The uni and hotate were inedible. Ive never had a scallop which was harder than a crisp potato. Complete waste of money. The shrimp and ikura and cod (?) in the sushi deluxe were also disgusting. Even half tuna special was tossed in the trash. Honestly, 7/11 probably offers better sushi. Wouldn't know because . $270 for two people, I expected much fresher tasting fish. Never again!! Ordered via Caviar and submitted a complaint - doubt anything will be done, but will keep you posted. read more

If you want flawless service from start to finish, this is the place for you. Their hosts graciously take your coats when you arrive and you are attended to extremely well over the course of your meal. Drinks are refilled and plates cleared in an almost orchestrated fashion. This is one of the rare places where the service impressed me just as much as the food. You can just tell that they have thought of every detail. Also, this place is on the nicer side, so dress accordingly. It's also quieter and more intimate so it is an excellent selection for a date. As for the sushi, it is extremely well executed. I will have to admit that I had a slightly better omakase at Sushi By Bou, but what you're getting here is top quality. I believe the pieces just needed a little bit less wasabi perhaps? Still, each creation is an absolute delight. Plus, the chef was very attentive, so this remains a solid five stars. Very well done. read more

But if I'm paying ~$150 I would like to enjoy at least 80% of the pieces and get complimentary hot tea. I have only ever gotten takeout from here, but that has been excellent during COVID. Great sushi cut rolls, especially salmon avocado and spicy tuna. Absolutely delicious! Started with the aga tofu appetizer and it was the best I have ever eaten. Sake suggested by the server was soft, smooth, a bit fruity as requested, and chilled perfectly. The chirashi as the main course: surprising variety of very fresh sushi plated beautifully! First time my chirashi came with eggplant: great addition! Loved how the sushi rice was decorated with roe on top. The wasabi was obviously made from scratch as was the jalapeño relish. Completed the meal with Mochi ice cream: vanilla, strawberry and green tea. The Mochi had a balanced blend of softness and texture with the sweet fresh ice cream in the center. My server was excellent, kind, and attentive! She even brought a cup of hot tea at the end just in case, and it hit the spot. Thank you! Definitely recommend dining here! read more

We got the $85 10 piece omakase, and it was... not very good. Some of the fish were overly toothsome and the rice a little too sticky. There weren't really any "premium" ingredients in the 10-piece option, and honestly with the quality we got, I think $50 would have been the maximum amount I'd be willing to pay. The appetizers were a bunch of pickled vegetables and the like that really wasn't worth the calories. I most certainly would not come back here again for omakase - maybe if I wanted some rolls for lunch. read more

I didn't know that we can have that delicious sushi outside Japan! We went Ryusei with a group of friends and had an excellent dinner with lots of authentic Nigiri Sushi, Sashimi, and Tempura! You definitely need to try their "nodoguro" (name of a very rare fish for nigiri). Nodoguro is one of the most delicious but the most rare fish for sushi that you cannot believe you can eat in NYC. (Even in Tokyo, very few upper class sushi restaurant serves it.) read more
