STAPLE FOUND IN FOOD. Tonight, I ordered two sushi rolls and after eating most of what was there, I felt something hard in my mouth and spit it out, only to realize it was a staple! I proceeded to stop eating and called the restaurant to tell them. They said they would need to send someone to come pick up the food so they could verify my story. So someone came to pick it up and shortly after I received a call saying that they couldn't give me any type of refund because I had eaten most of the food by the time I found the staple. It doesn't matter how much of the food I ate before finding the staple- the point is that I FOUND A STAPLE IN MY MEAL! Their response was beyond unacceptable and they just lost a valued customer. We go here to eat in and we love the hole-in-the-wall atmosphere, featuring a fish tank to really put you in the mood. The sushi is delicious and a good value for NYC. Add affordable beer and a BYOB policy with a small corkage fee and you have a low-key date night for a great value. The staff are nice and accommodating. Do not come in if you're looking for a fancy experience, there are a lot of delivery people in and out and the interior is nothing to write home about. What happened? For 10 years, this has been our favorite local takeout. Tonight's order was awful. 1) when we got home, one major item was missing 2) price has increased while the size of each piece nearly halved in size 3)maguro was discolored, tofu skins were stale, spicy tuna tasted old and was mushy... I waited about a month to post this and to be fair went back today to see if our last visit was abnormal. We also ordered identical sushi selections from 2 other nearby locations. We compared all three and still Sushi Suki ranked a distant third. Their soy sauce was all salt with no flavor, their pickled ginger stale and each piece of sushi significantly smaller and less fresh than the other establishments while the overall price slightly higher. Sushi Suki is a 25 seat sushi restaurant located on York, right by my MASSIVE apartment. It was blistery cold and I suggested sushi, so I immediately referred to my extensive list of bookmarks and recalled Sushi Suki, which was labeled "to try". We tried it and I was not thoroughly impressed. However, on a weekend night, this place was remarkably full at 8 PM. Maybe the business is attributed to the dearth of suitable sushi options in the area, or maybe it's a compliment to the service, or maybe the inviting ambiance (soothing new age music). I was not really impressed by the quality of the food, and I would recommend Inase on First Avenue between 82nd and 83rd ahead of it. Is this place among the ranks of Ise or Gari? Certainly not, but you won't have to worry about taking out a bank loan to pay the bill either. Our waitress was very nice, speedy, and attentive. We shared the tuna tataki ($8.50), and each had an order of the sashimi dinner ($20) but I was not impressed. The fish was decent, but it appeared, based on the cut of the fish, that the sushi chef lacked experience. In addition, none of the fish really had a positively distinct flavor. I'm glad I tried it, but if I'm searching for very good "mid-range" sushi I will stick to Inase. read more

I may have been one of Sushi Suki's first customers. Having just taken over the spot where Miharu Sushi once stood, Sushi Suki had just opened when I visited. They hadn't changed the decor that much -- it was still impeccably clean with exposed brick, waxed wooden floors and a frosted window with a picture of a Japanese woman ostensibly doing the hokey-pokey. She appeared to be in the process of turning herself around. I was immediately given warm, wet cloth--I always like that at a sushi place. The menu was a fairly standard assortment of rolls and sashimi, with moderate prices. I started off (as I always do) with the miso soup, which was in a small bowl and not that hot. The rolls I ordered arrived quickly though, so I didn't have much time to think about the soup. The salmon-avocado roll ($5) was very good, and though the fish in the yellowtail-scallion roll (also $5) looked a little-- well, mashed-- it also was very tasty. The service was friendly and prompt, and the atmosphere was pleasant. The owners might want to change the music selection to something a little more relaxing and/or Japanese, rather than a hot mix of hits from the 80s, 90s and today, though. Apparently, Suki means "I like " in Japanese --- giving Sushi Suki a direct and appropriate name. If that is the case, then I will say "Sushi Suki Suki" because this is a good place to get sushi (and because I think "Sushi Suki Suki" is fun to say). read more

This is hands down one of my favorite sushi places. Though small, the restaurant is extremely well decorated, clean, and has a perfect atmosphere. The menu is quite limited but has all the basics of Japanese cuisine: sushi and sashimi dinners, various rolls, a la cartes, bento boxes, soba/udon, etc. I'll admit, the dishes are fairly pricey compared to some other places, but the taste and flavor of everything makes it worth the few extra bucks. When it was exam week, I dragged my sleep-deprived behind here almost every day for lunch after the tests were done. (Their lunch specials are pretty good deals!) The place is run by a super-sweet Chinese couple. When they found out that I was also Chinese, they'd chat with me for a bit in a mix of Mandarin and English while I was waiting for my food; they told me about business and their daughter and were just wonderfully friendly. After I ate there a few times and they recognized me, they gave me free hot green tea (which was unusually good) and once, a free seaweed appetizer, yum. I haven't been able to go here as often as I'd like to recently, but my meal today reminded me to give Sushi Suki a good review on Yelp; this great place really deserves more business! read more

This is my new favorite sushi place. Now, its not because its the most amazing NYC sushi I've ever had (Morimoto), nor is it the ambiance (not a place to take a date, unless we're talking close friends/long-term relationship who could give a damn about where they're eating so long as the food is good). Its because Sushi Suki is the best deal for sushi that I can find in my neighborhood of the UES. The place itself is small, cute but fairly stereotypically decorated for a sushi joint - its just slightly out of the way for most people since its on York Ave (thank god for delivery!). And the staff is really sweet and attentive. The sushi itself is EXACTLY what I want in my sushi - minimal use of rice and maximum amount of fish/veggies. They are not stingy when it comes to filling those rolls, and its AWESOME. My friends avocado roll had more avocado than I've ever seen - one roll looked like it had an entire avocado in it! Best of all, they offer a little customization to their rolls where you can add ($.50 each) cucumber, avocado, mango, tobiko or spicy sauce to a roll. I get to make my favorite spicy scallop roll even more tasty! They have a great selection of rolls, both standard, spicy, and chefs specials, AND considering the quality (very fresh), at really reasonable prices, especially for the area! (And their edamame is super yummy/freshly steamed) I'm obsessed! I am seriously tempted to order takeout from them every night of the week now - only my bank statements stop me from doing so. read more

Came here after starving myself the whole day. Well, that's not true. I was starving though. After a hardcore work out at the gym, I didn't want to spoil my diet with something unhealthy, so I chose to get some sushi for dinner. I like around the area, so I decided to just pick it up. I didn't bother to dine-in, just to avoid tip and such. After putting my laundry in the wash, I made my way over to this restaurant. It was small, not hard to find. There was one couple dining in, and the place was empty. I think they get most of their business from to-go orders and delivery orders. I ordered fairly quick because I knew what I wanted. Tuna and salmon roll with brown rice, plus a miso soup. Each roll was $5 and the soup was $2. My total came out to be $13 after tax. They didn't charge me extra for the brown rice, which some places do. I waited for only 5-7 minutes and my order was up. I guess it's not that hard to wrap sushi. Ha. I paid and left. I had enough time to return to my apartment, eat some of my rolls and soup before heading back to the laundry mat. That's how fast my order was. Love it. The sushi was fresh and delicious. Definitely a winning place to order in from. I don't know how long delivery would take, but from what I experienced from their speedy sushi rolling, I don't think it would take that long. I noticed a lot of delivery orders go out as I sat in the restaurant waiting for my order. Anyway, like I said the sushi is fresh. It literally melts in your mouth. So good. The miso soup was just ordinary. Nothing special. I would definitely order again. But I realized that there are many sushi restaurants in the area that have delivery service and have cheaper sushi rolls. Always ordered for lunch delivery. Delivery is fast. Faster than most places in the area. The lunch special is a great value. It comes with salad and soup. Sushi and sushi bar appetizers use fresh fish. No smell or weird taste. Big fan of the spicy tuna roll and shrimp tempura. Tuna is fresh, firm and flavorful. Never too mushy or too much spicy mayo. The shrimp is never oily. Only complaint is the end of the shrimp roll with the tail on. It's hard to eat and I wish they would cut the tail off. In any case, Sushi Suki is pretty bananas, and their prices make SENSE!, which is just mind-boggling, considering they inhabit the rococo UES. Thanks for looking out for the 99% Sushi Suki! (Okay, the Chef's Special Rolls are a little much, but that's what happens when you put tobiko and mango and tempura banana and gilded lobster and whipped cream and seared avocado and more whipped cream on top of a piece of salmon; the basic rolls and the sushi are priced just fine). And, no matter what you order, it's always, always super fresh. A small, but very nice, touch is the slice of lemon paired with each piece of sushi or sashimi. I almost always order ikura and uni (really, this, explorateur cheese, and whipped cream are what prevent me from being a vegan) and the lemon just adds such a lovely delicate essence. Delivery has never taken more than 20 minutes, even 12 short and 2 long blocks away. AND you can get sake, wine, or beer, if you order through delivery.com! Yum!!! Okay, so I've been going to a good sushi place for my work lunches but missed their cutoff for lunch delivery today so tried Sushi Suki. I am impressed. Its a tiny bit pricier than the place I've been going to, but I think its worth it. The pieces of fish are generous, and the pieces of rice are tiny but fit in the mouth with the big pieces of fish well. The fish was fresh, clean tasting and didn't have that weird utility sushi taste that sometimes happens. The delivery was pretty fast considering I work about 15 blocks from the restaurant itself. I came here on a weekday for their lunch specials (love lunch specials). It was pretty quiet. The only other people were some middles school students which was a bit odd in the middle of the day, but to each their own. My friend and I both got the bento box lunch special for $10. It comes with 4 california rolls, 2 shumai, salad, soup and your choice of entree with rice. I got the salmon teriyaki and it was delicious. Just the right amount of tenderness and sauce. They didn't give very many onions with it like some other places which could be good or bad. At the end I guess it would have been nice if there was a little more food, but for $10, it wasn't bad. My friend got the shrimp tempura box and it came with 2-3 giant fried shrimp, along with some fried yams and a broccoli. She seemed satisfied with the amount she got. Food came out quick and service was attentive (took dishes away right when they were finished). This is a good place to try for lunch. read more

While this establishment serves acceptable food for the location and price point, unfortunately, I have had better at Kobe Sushi about six or so blocks away. I found the tempura to be not as flaky and slightly greasier, the spicy tuna roll to be less carefully constructed/rolled and a bit too mushy with fish not as fresh, and the beef negimaki to have slightly tougher meat. Also, while their salad offered a wider variety of greens other than iceberg lettuce, some of the greens had a bit of a sandy taste perhaps indicating that they have not been cleaned as thoroughly. I would not discount this place if you live in the immediate area; give it a try. It is possible that I am being too picky. read more

I just moved to the neighborhood and wanted to give the area restaurants a chance. After checking with yelp, I saw that sushi suki was rated relatively well and decided to see for myself. Although it wasn't packed, the place felt welcoming and the service was very fast. We ordered the special mango scallop roll and some special rolls and they were all really delicious and fresh. They were totally fine with altering rolls and making up your own. There are tons of sushi places in Manhattan, but this one is definitely worth going to. There are so many Japanese restaurants in the UES to choose from, but I always came back to this one when I lived in the UES. I usually ordered take out and a few times I sat down. The restaurant is really small, so if you have quite a large group it's not such a great idea and it's definitely not a place to go on a date with. You can overhear someone else's conversations etc. However, the food is pretty good. I loved the Shrimp Yaki Udon and so are the pork dumplings! If you live around the area, definitely check it out. read more

The good news : we didn't get sick. The bad news: pretty much everything else. The best thing I have to say about the food is that it was no worse than supermarket sushi. One variety of the fare in my sashimi platter was CLEARLY previously frozen. And the place smelled (although we stayed, so shame on us). I ordered the 3 maki lunch special today (spicy salmon, oshinko, and tuna avocado) and was impressed. The miso soup was actually delicious, the salad that came with was completely serviceable (just lettuce, but a blend of lettuces! that were fresh! and crisp!) and the maki themselves were delicious. This place is a repeater. Especially if you live in the area, keep the menu close. The restaurant itself is small and intimate. They are quick with deliveries and pick up orders. I have yet to have a bad meal from here. The food is always fresh, hot, and exactly as its described. I find the portions to be larger than other Japanese restaurant as well. Every since moving to the UES, I've been trying to find my new sushi spot. Previously, I had been going to Daruma in Englewood, NJ, and to my surprise and disappointment: nothing in the Big Apple was comparable. Wait a tick--- This is MANHATTAN. How was I unable to find a decent sushi restaurant? :::sigh....::: Anyhoo-- I live near Haru, which is good. Like B+ good. And overpriced. And crowded. And Trendy. Eh... What I REALLY wanted was a quiet little spot with fresh fish, an interesting menu, friendly staff, and decent prices. Found it! We started with shrimp shumai. Yum. Then we got the mermaid roll, crazy salmon, yellow-tail scallion, and spicy tuna. Everything was outstanding! So much so that I almost went back the next day. I've walked by Sushi Suki a million times and never went inside. Friday night, we headed home from Bailey's pub in search of a eat-in spot still open. Sushi Suki's bright lights spilled out onto the street, and the sign read open until 11. It was 10:45, but they still agreed to seat and serve us. The menu is pretty typical sushi with typical prices. We ordered some of the usual (tuna avocado, shrimp tempura, california...) and I tried the spicy mango shrimp roll. I'm always looking for good shrimp rolls because I don't like tempura and I don't like the Boston Roll (lettuce just doesn't mesh well with me in a roll). The spicy mango shrimp was great. We also ordered calamari... it looked really strange - it had a soggy look because the breading was basically white, but it actually tasted really good. And it came with this awesome chili sauce that we wiped clean. read more

The tempura rolls looked great, but I went with a Dragon roll for a change and what a mistake! Worst Eel roll on the planet. Totally tasteless with a teeny sliver of eel, and a heaping wad of sliced cucumbers. If you want a legit Unagi roll, don't order it here. It's all cucumber and their sauce is missing something... Excellent value for the money. I've had many of the specialty rolls, much of the sushi. The place is intimate, 2 rows of tables. I would suggest dine-in or take-out if possible. Delivery has been hit or miss (but sushi usually is...) People tend to downplay this place because, "...the sushi isn't expertly cut," "...the [sushi] is Americanized", etc. but to be honest I think New Yorkers get a bit anal when it comes to sushi. It's not Sushi of Gari. It's not trying to be. It's honest, fresh, simple sushi/sashimi done well and it's certainly the best I've had around the neighborhood. Their lunch specials are a spectacular value: bento boxes are 10$ and come with entree, 4 pc CA roll, shumai, rice, salad, soup. Extensive roll selection (so if you're a nigiri purist, look elsewhere) - the Lion and Lobster Rolls are both good bets. read more
