Yum! Really solid sushi place in the Sunset! Sushi Uma has been on Irving forever, but recently moved with a bigger space. No longer just a counter, they now have many seats and can accomodate a bigger group. With this new space comes a new special: All you can eat lunch. If you normally can eat 2-3 rolls for lunch, this is worth it to go to. You don't have to stuff yourself, but you can enjoy a variety of rolls without breaking the bank. The staff were friendly and attentive enough - my tea was always full but I didnt feel like I was being pressured. I also saw their staff being very friendly and supportive to a solo elder diner, even picking up his jacket that fell over and re-positioning it on his chair so it doesn't fall off again! Located on Irving Street, between 22nd and 23rd Avenues, Sushi Uma is both a traditional sushi bar that serves your requisite sushi rolls and other sliced raw fish from nigiri to sashimi. What makes Sushi Uma so unique is that they serve an All You Can Eat Menu daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., so with lunch or an early dinner you can really get your money's worth for $26.99 on weekdays and $29.99 on weekends and holidays. What brought a party of thirteen people here was this remarkable deal as the holidays were upon us and we were looking to get out and enjoy one another's company and what better way to do it than dining on as much sushi as one can possibly dine on. Making reservations over the phone was super easy to do as their staff was super accommodating for our large party and they made sure to verify that we were indeed honoring our reservation the day before our scheduled meal. Upon arrival, our table was ready to be sat and after a brief review of their menu, we were ready to make the first of many orders. The menu at Sushi Uma comprises a regular a la carte menu, which includes Appetizers & Sides, Makimono / Handrolls, Nigiri / Sashimi, Sushi & Sashimi Combo, Signature Bowls, Signature Rolls, and Bento Boxes. Of course, everyone in our party came for their All You Can Eat Menu and since our reservation began at 3 p.m. on a weekday afternoon, we knew we only had a limited time to order and eat. This menu features items of food you can order with categories including Appetizers, Makimono/ Handrolls and their Signature Sushi Rolls, for an additional 10 dollars a person you can also order Nigiri, so we decided to stay with the first three options. We would start with multiple orders of their Shrimp Tempura, Chicken Karaage, and Fried Gyoza, as they did not have French Fries to enjoy this visit. As for the rolls, here is where things got interesting, among the highlights, as we would order their Lion King Roll, which featured imitation crab and avocado inside the roll that was topped with salmon and baked. We would also order their Dragon Roll which had a shrimp tempura inside, and was topped with eel and avocado; their Spider Roll which was a combination of soft shell crab and cucumber; Double Hamachi Roll, which had hamachi and cucumber inside the roll and was topped with hamachi and tobiko; Red Dragon Roll which had shrimp tempura inside and topped with spicy tuna; and their Crazy Roll, which had spicy yellowtail inside and topped with albacore tuna. It's worth noting that sushi rolls arrive in waves, as the hardworking sushi chefs are hand-making everything as quickly as possible. This did lead to a bit of confusion when reordering, as we tended to eat with our eyes before our stomachs could catch up, and it became difficult to track what our party was still waiting for versus what had already arrived. With the limited time we were allotted, it occasionally felt unclear what we still had left to order before the afternoon service ended. As a result, we ended up with more sushi on the table than we could finish, which led to some momentary hand-wringing. In the end, the staff were incredibly gracious: they didn't charge us for the uneaten rolls and even provided takeout boxes so members of our party could enjoy the sushi later. And enjoy it we did, everything from the hand-cut fish to the carefully wrapped rolls tasted exceptionally fresh and delicious. Our total bill came to just over $350 (tax included, before gratuity), which felt very reasonable for the quality and quantity of handcrafted sushi we received. The experience at Sushi Uma was so memorable that it immediately made me want to return, next time to explore their à la carte options, especially the nigiri, sashimi, and bento boxes, all of which looked enticing and well priced. Sushi Uma recently started offering AYCE for $24.99 from 11am-4pm and I had to check it out. A lot of people have the same idea because I've never seen this place so full. The $24.99 menu is rolls only but for $10 extra, you can have access to 15 types of nigiri. You also get miso soup, salad, and karaage as part of it. I went with the nigiri up charge and ordered 5 types to start with. They were all really good. They don't skimp on the fish at all. Each piece is thick and what you would expect if it was a la carte. I also got the cherry blossom roll and spicy scallop hand roll. Both were pretty good too. The service was a bit slow because there was only one chef and 5-6 tables. Came here for a quick late lunch. This area has a lot of shopping so the parking isn't too difficult to find, but it is metered parking. The restaurant when we arrived was busy but they were still able to fit our party of 3 in. Ordering is simple, and quick. The wait for the food to come out was slightly long but seeing how busy the small restaurant is, it is understandable, seeing that many tables do the AYCE option as well. The Scallop Lovers Roll is a MUST TRY. That is the sole reason for the 5/5 stars. My sister and I fought for the last piece of that roll. The 49er's roll was different as well, the lemon tasted like yuzu and that made the dish a 5/5 as well. Maybe it was just a lucky lemon. AYCE Nigiri is an extra $10 so something to be mindful of if that's what you're coming here for. The rolls are huge. Portion size wise the fish-ratio is not bad. The fish is thinner but pretty big and there's a lot of rice so you get full fast. When I first arrived, the speakers were blasting loudly, but they eventually lowered the volume. There are two flat screen TVs playing movies, which added a bit of entertainment to the meal. I ordered four rolls: Romeo and Juliet, Coral Reefs, Boston, and Cherry Blossom. My favorite would have to be the Romeo and Juliet; the sauce was different than any sushi place that I've tried. It reminded me of flavors from an izakaya. My second favorite was the Coral Reefs; it came with tons of toppings which made it quite flavorful. The other two rolls were kind of plain, especially the Cherry Blossom. The bluefin tuna on top had very little flavor. Overall it was a good meal for the price. We got there before 6, and even though there was a sign out front, apparently they stopped AYCE at 4. They refused to honor it and were left with some very upset customers. Having AYCE in San Francisco is a rare thing .Growing up in the Mission in San Francisco once people find out about an AYCE spot it gets raided fast and people attack it like a Lion on raw meat . Hot Pot are usually the typical AYCE places in SF where some people are still too lazy to boil and cook some raw meat. This spot serves it raw and needs no personal cooking . This sushi place is first come and first serve and has a few tables and it just focuses on sushi only and not on pasta, and potatoes for its AYCE. The Sushi rolls are made to order and all for $24.99 with taxes and but no tariffs ( less than a drink and one entree item inside Outside lands). This place is located a few blocks away from the Gate 7 entrance at Golden Gate Park and it's on Irving street . Stepping into Sushi Uma they have a friendly staff which gives you an opportunity to try as many different sushi rolls at once with no attitude . I ordered first the U2 roll with Unagi and Avocodo inside, Topped with Unigi & Tobiko. It's the one of many rolls which has two of my favorite items in sushi which is unagi and tobiko. Then I had the Romeo & Juliet Roll with Salmon & Avocado inside, Topped with Scallop & Tobiko. The fish was fresh and real natural salmon from Mother Nature and not Lab-grown salmon. After that I had countless sushi rolls with crab, eel, salmon, scallops, tuna and some topped with some sauce drizzle. It was all you want to eat tasty. I was craving sushi and stumbled upon Sushi Uma on Yelp. The omakase looked pretty good in the pictures, so I figured I'd give it a try. Unfortunately, I never got to try it... My partner and I arrived around 2:30pm on a Monday and the restaurant was half full, with 3 people waiting at the entrance for their to-go orders. We got seated and our order was taken immediately. We ordered an omakase, a bento box, and chicken karaage. We were warned that the bento box would take about 20 minutes, which we found a bit strange but were okay with. However, it took over half an hour, and after waiting an hour for my omakase I asked the waitress how much longer. She said that the chef hadn't even started making it! Mind you, those 3 to-go orders also were not done yet! At that point I had eaten the chicken and half of my partner's bento, so I cancelled my order. Everything tasted fine, but nothing to write home about. One redeeming quality was that they were very apologetic and the chef quickly made a California roll as an apology. It was not mild or medium. I told the server that It is very spicy, she replied yes it is written in the menu. I was speechless and too tired to complain. Dynamite Roll got spicy tuna, it burn my tongue, I was sweat to the point I stop eating. No other places got spicy tuna this much spicy.
