Yama is our go-to Japanese restaurant in the area. We live in Falls Church, VA and there is simply no better sushi restaurant for the price that Yama offers in the our immediate area. My wife and I have visited Tokyo and tried many of the sushi restaurants there. Yama's flavor and quality are comparable to the restaurants that we experienced in Japan (disclaimer: we are not profession tasters and are simply expressing our opinion). There can be a bit of a wait for both a table and food during busy times, but the staff are always nice and a little conversation with the smart phone down passes the time quite quickly. read more

Best sushi in Vienna! fast service and a good amount of seating for such a small space. The rolls are consistently amazing! My favorites are the Smokey Yama and the Wasabi roll, and their Rainbow Roll deserves an honorable mention. The fish is always fresh and the chefs care about the details. Definitely your best bet on sushi in the area and at a very affordable price. Recently tried Mochi ice cream there for the first time. Who knew red beans could be so sweet and delicious? My girlfriend and I are huge fans of great sushi. Based on glowing Yelp reviews we were excited to try Yama for lunch this week. Our favorite sushi is remaking style, so we ordered spicy tuna, spicy salmon and spicy yellow tail hand rolls. Our anticipation for a great meal turned to disappointment as soon as our order was served. The hand rolls were very small and the fish was puréed!!! If that were not bad enough, the seasoning made each dish look like a "orange seaweed snow cone" and taste the same - the taste of stale/old fish partially masked by overwhelming spicy sauce!!! Simply terrible. I have never posted a Yelp review before, but our experience compelled me to do so. If I could provide a rating of less than 1 Star, I would. read more

Love this place. I go all the time for the Bento box lunch. Very fair priced and friendly service. If you don't go for lunch, you should order the "yama zen" (which is big enough for two) it's 20.00 and had all the same things that are in the bento box but on a bigger scale. Love it! read more

Amazing house rolls and the Sukiyaki was amazing. Plan to wait a quick minute to get a seat, it is always packed, but the line moves quick.

We have always enjoyed dining here. On 12/17/2010, it all changed. We three, wife, daughter, myself, walked in and found no one ahead of us about 6:30 PM. We were told 5-10 mins. wait. Then several others arrived - none with reservations. They table assigner proceeded to seat 4 or more parties ahead of us. I approached the owner several times who directed us to the bar or to wait more. No explanation for seating others ahead of us. We took the bar - another 15 min. wait till offered any drink. As I enjoyed my water, I noticed food matter inside the glass. There was no reaction to this unsanitary situation. We left after 2+ hrs with less than we paid for. With the economy and number of choices in this area, you don't need to visit this disappointment. read more

I was really disappointed the last time I went here. I came here for lunch on a weekend, and the tempura was soggy (as if they'd cooked it earlier and just reheated it again after we ordered it) and tasteless, and the fish wasn't that fresh. The service was slow, too. It was surprising how low the quality of the food was since the place was packed, but maybe it was because their lunch special is cheap. I found this on Yelp at 9:40 on a Sunday night, and saw they close at 10pm. I figured they wouldn't be too happy about a last-minute order, but I called and the lady was very friendly and helpful. I pulled in at 10:02 for my pickup and my sushi was waiting for me along with a smile. It was $32 for enough sushi to feed 4 people, and it was very good, especially the Mango Yama Roll. My favorite sushi place in the Area. The owner always comes by and meets the patrons. The white tuna is buttery and the portions are great. I love having a beer and some white tuna or fatty tuna at the bar. They've even given me free rolls that the chefs have been experimenting with before. read more

What have I learned upon my experience at Sushi Yama? Great food, terrible service. My friends and I went for lunch; we all ordered the Lunch Boxes. It is a great deal - only $10.95 for a lot of food - sushi rolls, tempura, vegetables, tofu, salad, miso soup, among other things. The food was excellent and we all enjoyed it. With that being said, it took us two hours to have lunch because our service was so slow! It was definitely busy in there, but not busy enough for the service to be that slow. It took forever for us to actually get our food, and our checks. I would come back for the food, but maybe at a less busy time or just to order for take out. read more

Worst sashimi/sushi I've ever had in DMV area! We came here today only because we forgot making reservation with Sushi Yoshi or Tachibana. YAMA sashimi and sushi: not fresh at all, horrible texture. I know it's summer, but how could the sashimi be served almost hot? How long your fish has stayed in the non-iced kitchen? My family and I have been going to Yama for 18 years or so, since it opened and it is our favorite sushi place in the Vienna/Oakton/Reston area. I love the lunch boxes with the light, crispy tempura and variations on the main course - sushi, teriyaki, yakisoba. The sushi is always delicious and attractive to the eye. The prices are reasonable. We moved to Reston, but still drive to Vienna when we want sushi. read more

Good place for lunch. Nice bento box selection, and sushi/sashimi/roll options to choose from. All come with salad and miso soup. Generous portions and tasty. Not the best sushi I have ever had--it was fresh but left me wanting a bit more from it--but for a meal in the $9-12 range it was satisfying. Service was fine. Kind and timely servers. Atmosphere is casual and welcoming and what you would expect from a strip mall restaurant. Comfortable, tables not right on top of each other. This is my favorite place for sushi. The service is always friendly, the sushi chefs are friendly, the food is fresh. I know some people noted that they like the cream cheese options, but I prefer the simple traditional sushi, sashimi and occasionally soba noodles. They do a nice job of the traditional, but still have some "fun" rolls too. I like the simplicity of the decor as well. Their prices are very reasonable. Went here yesterday for dinner with besties. The place has a nicely decorated interior with a sushi bar that pops out of your eye when you first come in. We sat kind of close to the door. We ordered the Yama Zen (based on one Yelp reviewer's recommendation - thanks!), the Fish/Flounder Katsu, & the Unadon. I'm not going to repeat what's in the Yama Zen & instead will go straight into the details. The miso soup was good. Same as any other version. The salad was rather ordinary & came with a sweet peanut dressing. The first dish that came out was the shrimp & vegetable tempura. There were 2 shrimp & one of the following veggies: carrot, broccoli, onion, potato, & green pepper/green bean (the latter two, not sure of). My fav was the potato. The sauce that came with it took a little while to get used to.... (It wasn't really strong soy sauce... More of a mild sweet one, but don't trust me on that. I get all my sauces mixed up). The sushi contained your typical sushi: salmon, 2 California's with fish eggs, tuna, etc. The beef teriyaki portion was kinda also puny for 3, but OH SO GOOD. The sauce is amazing & it tastes like beef right off the grill in your backyard. As for the ice cream, one scoop. That's. It. I was kind of hoping for more, ya know? Next up, the flounder, which was delicious, crispy on the outside, but portion was also little small for 3. Bestie absolutely loved the unadon though. It came in this huge box, eel layered across the top of rice. She said it was yummy, sweet & well-made. & she couldn't finish it! So good dish for 2 (& maybe 3 - maybe since we didn't try it out; other bestie & me were working on the rest of the meal) people. I thought that particular dish was a pretty good deal! Service was pretty good. The waitresses came around a couple of times asking if we were okay & were mildly inattentive (today was kind of busy). Total bill $60+ with tip for three people. Not that bad, but not that cheap either (to me anyways, being the broke student that I am). If ordering the Yama Zen, i think you should order a little more of the other dishes for parties of 2+. My husband and I love this place. The wait staff is extremely friendly and ready to answer any questions. They are welcoming and very nice to our daughter - we've had the opposite experience at some other sushi places. The atmosphere is very low-key, no rush. Perfect for a nice meal out. It's more like 3 stars but anyway, the atmosphere here is pretty nice, the employees all have good energy. The sashimi was pretty good, we also ordered chirashi. I give 3 stars because the chirashi was hella weird. Like half of it was delicious, the other half was mcnast, quoth my sister: "I have never tasted worse sashimi". When we asked the waitress she said it is supposed to taste that way cause it's fatty tuna. I don't believe that for a second, I lived in Japan and never tasted such fishy fish. Anyway might come back some day, as long as we don't get sick. Made reservation and was forced to wait 45 minutes for a table while people just walked in and grabbed seats. Food was decent.
