What's up with these reviews?! I gave this place a shot since I was in the area, and the food wasn't that great. We tried two rolls, an appetizer, and a dinner entree, but all we got were subpar small portions of food. The place has a nice atmosphere and the service is actually not bad, but the small amounts of so-so food and sushi for the price don't make up for it. In this part of Virginia, I'd drive a little further to get better quality food for the price. read more

Yama is a neighborhood gem! Clean, cordial, and consistenly good. They have a nice variety of rolls and the fish always tastes fresh!

I've gone to many sushi joints in my day... Sushi Sono is my fave in MD but this is my VA fave thus far. Its very unassuming from the outside, being located in a lil strip mall but the food is so good that it keeps my fiance and I coming back for more when we have a sushi craving. The food is fresh, not overhwlemed with mounds of rice and sauce and its just always on point. It's a sort of small place so there will definitely be a wait during peak rush hours. but its worth it to me :) read more

Just got back here from lunch with some clients and coworkers. I got the chicken teriyaki and it was very good. Big piece and the sauce was very tasty. Tried some of the California rolls and they were good. Service was friendly and the prices are fair. I'm not a big sushi eater but this place is pretty good. Would come back again. read more

Couldn't finish my tempura shrimp; I had a crab cheese appetizer and by the time I got half way through my tempura there was just too much fried for me. I never thought I'd say that. I think the best tempura veggie is broccoli but sadly there wasn't much of it on my plate (just one piece). They serve beer and wine and that's about it for their liquor options. My dining partner finished an enormous plate of sushi so I imagine it was all pretty good or I don't think he would have eaten it all. I came here about a month ago I didn't have much of a pleasant experience. We came on Saturday for lunch and when we arrive there was only about 5 customers in the restaurant with 3 servers and for some reason we had to wait 10 mins just to get notice and seated. We ordered an appetizer I forgot what it is called but it has potatoes tuna and roe all I can say is DO NOT ORDER IT! The potatoes isn't cooked and I think they turn it into a paste but the thing I front of me was slimy and gross and just take my word and don't order it! We also ordered spicy tuna, spicy yellow tail, salmon roll, and Philly roll. They were all ok wasn't the best I had but definitely not worth the price. Service wasn't good, food didn't meet the expectation of the price therefore I will not be coming back here. read more

My favorite local sushi place! We love to take the kids for lunch, they enjoy the bento boxes. The chefs are always super friendly and accommodating. Their carry out service is on point, our order is always right, and they always include soy sauce, chopsticks, and extra dressing. read more

Small, quaint strip shopping center sushi. The sushi, sashimi, & rolls are as good as it gets!! Everything on the menu is excellent & reasonably priced for Vienna! Service is almost always very good & friendly (bad only once out of 20+ visits). They have wine carafes and bottles of wine for very reasonable/cheap prices. Since it is so small, it is always best to call for a reservation or at least be willing to eat at the 6 seats at the sushi bar. read more

Hands down my favorite sushi spot in the Tyson's area. The miso soup & seaweed salad are super delish and a great way to start the meal. Friendly staff. Located in a non-descript strip mall in Vienna, this place is more what you would find in LA than DC. Sushi here is amazingly good and cheap; glad that I have another alternative to Annapolis for those quantifiers. Shrimp tempura and Maui rolls were my favorite. Sashimi delicious as well. The owner/manager is very friendly and hospitable, as were the waitresses. A great experience overall. Make a reservation as you will have to wait if you don't; especially on the weekend. read more

We used to come here long time ago but stop coming because the service here is just below satisfactory. The waitress were not nice and the food came out slow. Here we go, decided to come back after years to give another try. We came in during Saturday lunch time a little over 1 PM. My husband and I were quickly greeted, and we were seated after another 5 minutes. There were many tables open but not yet cleaned, therefore, we had to wait until the table is cleaned up for us. The waitress we had was better than before, the service was more attentive and the attitude was better. But the food was SOSOSO slow...I almost took a nap...zzz. I ordered sashmi, when the sashimi finally arrived, the waitress asked me if I want rice. It bothered me a bit, because rice is supposed to serve rice without asking. It is not "optional" for sashimi. And the fish is just not as fresh, and the "part" of fish they chose was not the best part. But the price was cheap, so I guess I shouldn't complain. The reason for 3 star is value. For that kind price...I shouldn't expect much. read more

I was shocked when I saw the chirashi. 12 beautiful various sashimi, including salmon, tuna, and other kinds. The price is reasonable, and I was greatly satisfied when I finished my dish. Don't expect too much for the service, but you can really count on the food. Honestly, I'll definitely revisit again, since the chirashi is the best deal I can ever find after hanging around so many Japanese restaurant. (I do notice that they offer you a lot for lower price. Seems like the people sitting beside me were also happy with there combo rolls~ For high-quality food, you have to be patient. However, it's apparently worthwhile when you get your order. Its a cozy and cute Japanese restaurant and its usually busy ! They have the best sushi specials . I recommend yummy Yama roll , bubba roll and Godzilla roll if you are getting sushi . Was pleasantly surprised by how fresh and delicious their sushi was. My friend got a sashimi dish while I got two rolls (Godzilla roll and spicy yellow tail). I would definitely recommend getting their sashimi, the white tuna just melts in your mouth. I do love how they have a variety of special rolls, especially ones without cream cheese- I hate rolls with cream cheese in it. This is my favorite place to go for lunch, since I'm totally addicted to Japanese food. Although I do not make it there often, they have the best lunch box special around. "Sushi Yama" is what's on the sign outside. Pros: Been going here for years, the sushi is always on point. Extremely fresh every single time. Cons: Sushi pieces could be a little bit larger. The interior is also a little cramped and it definitely gets crowded and busy. I dined inside the restaurant only once and my experience taught me to just get carry out in the future. Conclusion: Although I would like Yama to have bigger portions of sushi I can always count on their quality. Give this place a go if you haven't. read more

Came here on a Friday night when apparently it's impossible to get a table at any sushi restaurant in Vienna without a reservation. We tried this place after being turn away from our favorite in hopes that they may have a table. Immediately we were greeted in a VERY cramped front entry way. We waited even though every table was full because the sushi patters and dishes that were coming out looked so fresh, abundant and delicious! Boy were we primed for good sushi by the time we sat down. Even though it was full the host sat us as quickly as he could and the turnover was not bad. We started with some warm sake and a Korean beer to take off the chill of the night. I'm partial to sashimi but my husband loves rolls so we took a look at both. I have to say that even though my go-to is not rolls, I immediately saw many that I'd order. The combinations were unique but if you're not adventurous they had the standard rolls too. I have to say... go for the specialty rolls if you can. They are delicious! We ended up ordering three of them with an order of chirashi, which they made with tuna and yellow tail, (special order). The sashimi pieces were large, cut thick and so fresh. This was my husband's first time eating yellow tail and he said he'd definitely order it again. Throughout the meal we just enjoyed our food and they never rushed us even though the restaurant was full. I think after this experience, we've found another favorite sushi place. We're repeat customers, but have been here for dinner. The food is pretty good, but pretty high for lunch. Our bill including tip came up to $41.00. That was for 2 sushi rolls, 1 piece of sushi ($3.00 for one piece of eel sushi. Most places give you 2 for maybe a $1 more), and a chicken hibachi lunch. Don't get the lunch portion, order the dinner and take half home. The lunch price only changes by a couple bucks and you get half of the dinner portion. The server is nice and on top of everything, so we always had everything we needed. read more

Significant drop in service and food. The food is not what it used to be, and it has dropped to a normal, shabby sushi joint. I used to love everything it offered, but now it's not the same. Their fish is sliced with little skill, but they keep the quality and flavor up. However, it still takes away from the experience. The service has also dropped to a low point. I've lived in both Japan and California, so I've had a lot of sushi. That said, Yama is my favorite sushi restaurant so far in Vienna/Fairfax/Arlington. The staff is always friendly, it has a clean and pleasant atmosphere, and the selection and quality of sushi are great - the fish here tastes fresher than elsewhere. My favorites are the alligator roll and the shrimp tempura roll. read more

This sushi restaurant had some pretty unique rolls, but I'm still a bit skeptical about the quality of the ingredients. The first thing I noticed was that the ginger was dyed and that the wasabi looked a bit um.. aged. Also, the FW eel was served cold and rubbery. However, the fish was the biggest problem for me. Fresh fish is generally filled with vibrant colors. The fish we got looked like it got its colors from an easter egg (pastels). Despite my issues with the ingredients, the food actually tasted decent. I doubt I'd be going back soon anytime soon though. read more

Disclaimer: We were only here because we went to sushi yoshi first but that was closed for lunch on mondays! So, I went here on my birthday for lunch, because sushi is my favorite food. We each ordered a salad and a bunch of rolls: Spicy salmon, spicy tuna, spicy scallop, bombay roll, and the soft shell crab roll. Nothing at all stood out. It was not terrible, but the rice was falling off and not sticking together. There was way too much rice on the bigger rolls too. The service and prices were also average. OH! but the dressing on the salads was amazing. I have no idea what it was, but it was damn good. I'd only come back here if it was lunch time on a monday. read more

Living nearby, my wife and I make it in for sushi a couple of times each summer. They're consistent, friendly, and not too expensive, especially for the food provided. This time, I was in the mood for rice, so I ordered the chirashi (sashimi and veggies served on top of a bowl of rice, the rice flavored with sesame seeds and a wasabi mayo). My wife had a combo including some teriyaki, some tempura, and a decent amount of sushi. Both came with lovely miso soup and salad too. All tasty, not an offensive bite to be found.
