I have been eating at Yama for the last 5 years. This place has the freshest sushi in the area. They also have many different options. I highly recommend trying Yama. They have something for everyone. This is so much better than Matsu, Arigato, and Wegmans sushi. This might be one of my new favorite sushi places in the Vienna/McLean area. My friend B. and I came here for dinner last Friday around 6pm. While it was just fairly busy when we arrived, the place filled up quickly with folks waiting outside for a table so I was glad that I had made a reservation. The food was great. Both of us got a miso soup to get started and then we ordered 4 rolls to share - everything was well prepared and really yummy. We got the Spider roll, the Yummy Yama roll, the Alligator roll and the Wasabi roll and I can't say which one I liked best since everything tasted great. This is one of my 2 favorite Japanese restaurants in NoVa. I am a regular customer having dined here for many years. I typically choose to enjoy an assortment of rolls that I share with others I am dining with. I also enjoy the edamame, seaweed salad, and agedashi tofu as appetizers. In the winter the sukiyaki is very filling. The restaurant is very busy most nights so reservations are a must or you will have to wait. read more

This is easily my favorite sushi spot because of it's price and the fresh fish. I personally know the owner and know that he is someone who is very clean and will not buy fish that's of low quality. What to order: Salmon cream roll for those who like to order non-raw items. Teriyaki fire grilled salmon cheek/head is also a crowd favorite which most people don't know about because it's not on their menu. Order the tempura shrimp and veggies you won't be disappointed because it's crispy and moist!! This is the only place that has the flaky, crispy texture that I can't seem to find anywhere else or replicate at home. Udon here is better than anywhere else you can find because they mastered the umami taste with a hint of mushroom flavor. Smoky Yama roll is amazing because they fire torch the fish on top. Bubba, oishi, spicy rainbow roll, Milky Way are all delicious especially bc the white tuna here melts in your mouth. Price: All house special rolls are under $12 which is a deal you can't find anywhere in nova or the DMV area. They keep their prices low and don't want to raise them bc they're loyal to their customers. If you come for lunch you can eat and be full under $13. Price: For what you get from a taste and portion standpoint, it's super cheap ($) but in relation to restaurants in general I guess I hasta put $$. Da Foods: I ruv it. My BF is a raw seafood wuss but all their cooked rolls were on point. Portions are normal, but they give you a lot of da meats - and dats wus important. I got salmon fo mahself, it was phresh n delish! Ambience: Casual and comfortable, well lit so I can inspect errthang about to enter ma boday. Service: Superbous. We came close to closing (9:30pm, they close at 10) and they weren't grumpy at all. We sat at the sushi bar, and they periodically checked in us.. This place is a fraud. Took my money and never gave me the food. Ordered online through their website, but didn't realize the wait time was over 1.5 hours. Immediately called to cancel my order and the manager said she will cancel my order but didn't offer any assurances. I ended up getting food from another place in the same shopping plaza so I stopped by to get the cancelation receipt. the manager said she can't but assured me she will cancel the order. I never got my refund and when I disputed the charge with my credit card company, they sent a fake pick up receipt to the credit card company claiming I picked up the order. Amazing service and the food was amazing. We started with the Gyozas with miso soup and the Gyozas were some of the best Gyozas I have had. Then we got the chicken tempuras, the shrimp tempuras, and the eel sashimis. It was delicious for all three of us eating out there to the point where my dad said he'd be back in another few weeks from now to order more of the sashimi with the eel and the salmon. The restaurant is a bit small but cozy. The decorations are amazing! The Oakton Sushi place is nothing compared to this one head-to-head. The fact that this one, unlike the Oakton one, Serves the delicious Gyozas is amazing. That was certainly the best part and I would go back just to order the Gyozas alone - Gyozas are the best food ever for me and the fact they nailed it was amazing! Service: Guy was one of the best servers I have had! 6/5 Food: 6/5 because of nailed Gyozas which are NOT easy to make! Decor: 5/5 No wait time when getting seated so + 1 bonus point for getting us as soon as we walked in! Overall 5.75/5 which means if it's over 100% score then it's in my restaurant hall of fame, (one of the best of not the best restaurant in town certainly)! Plus one more thing: the waiter got us a cup for the soy sauce - totally unexpected and they even think of the sauce to take home and go above and beyond! You guys should be proud of yourselves! When I crave sushi, the first thing that comes to mind when deciding where to go is the consistency of how fresh the sushi is. Yama Japanese Restaurant is a casual restaurant with no particular dish that stands out (no surprises, good or bad), but it's the ONE place where I have consistently been served fresh sushi. Yesterday, I had their Pork Katsu appetizer to start, which is ultimately what pushed me to write this review. Breading is thin, perfectly crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, flavorful, without being too salty. OH and their hand roll is YUMMY (we ordered two yama hand rolls and they were delicious). My husband and I always get hot sake, which is served not too hot (just the right temp), and is a good base sake that goes with various dishes from the menu. All in all, this is the ultimate low-risk sushi place, if one day, you crave unpretentious sushi that's fresh and don't want to venture far/try new places. read more

Definitely an excellent spot for sushi and great Japanese food in the area! Went here on a Saturday night and it was pretty crowded, but they were able to fit us in at the beginning of the dinner rush. The space is a little small, tables are very close to one another; you're basically an elbow's length from the table directly beside you if you're conscious of social distancing. Since they were busy, it took a while to get our order in, but they had our appetizers available quickly. The sushi was excellent (took a little longer), but really great quality fish and a good size for the nigiri and rolls. Wonderful service and delicious food but the main thing that's important to point out is the temperature of the food. Sushi should have been much colder and miso soup and shumi and hot entrees should be piping hot. Everything was warm or lukewarm. So that's what would make this place better. read more

Food : for $40, we got two miso soups, 3 sushi rolls, my "SUSHI" appetizer which consists of a 3 piece roll of chef's choice and 4 nigri which was the perfect size for me , and a $14 bottle of sake . At the end , our sushi chef also gave us a complimentary two piece "dessert" sushi which was very good and refreshing to the palette with the mango slice . Not THEE best sushi place I've been to, but since this place treated us super great and the good was good , we will definitely return when we are in town ! Bottom line: Atmosphere 5 Location 5 Food 5 Service 3 Ate here with my daughter on New Years Day, arriving at 7:10 PM. We had to pick up something in Tysons, asked a work colleague where there was good sushi, and he recommended Yama. Great location, right on 123 in the heart of Vienna, minutes from Tysons. Easy parking in strip shopping center lot. We were seated immediately. Restaurant was almost filled, plenty of people enjoying the holiday. Got menus quickly, then sat. It took almost 15 minutes until our server returned to take our order, and because we had a question, she stopped in the middle and moved on to care for another table. Understaffed with three servers? Possibly. Once we ordered it took almost 45 minutes to receive our dinner. Crazy. Server told us they got busy, and we did see a couple of take-out orders being picked up. We commented to her that we have been here nearly 1 hour and still no food. She apologized, asked if I wanted some miso soup, which I declined. A few minutes later our dinner arrived. It looked fabulous. We ordered four rolls: Holiday (tuna, salmon, avocado, scallion, masago eggs), Alligator (tuna, avocado, masago eggs rolled with avocado outside ), Yummy Yama (spicy salmon, avocadeo topped with salmon, white tuna, scallion ), and Trio Tuna Roll (spicy tuna, cucumber, crunch flakes, scallion, and on the outside tuna, white tuna, avocado, spicy garlic sauce, black tobiko eggs).You probably noticed that all of these were similar; we don't eat shellfish. The fish was super fresh with great texture and flavor, and the other flavors/ingredients were lively and delicious. The rolls were imaginative and artistic. Beautiful! Each one was beautiful, festive, and totally delicious. A different sushi experience from the run-of-the-mill places we frequent. When our bill came: nothing to indicate that there was an issue. No discount, nothing thrown in for free. This is not going down in the annals of good service and customer friendliness. But, have a heart, it was a busy holiday dinner time. Bill for two of us was $56 with tax and tip. I had one large format beer, daughter had miso soup, and we split 4 rolls and felt totally satisfied/full. So not cheap but, for DC, moderate. I really wanted to like this place more!! So, I decided to come in and meet with a yelp friend on a Tuesday early dinner around 5:00pm. It opens at strictly 5:00pm so if you come any earlier, they will be closed. I went in and waited for my friend. The server was really nice throughout the entire dining experience. I started out with some spicy tekka temaki. It was pretty good and I really liked how they put a lot of tuna in the cone. I didn't like how the sushi rice didn't have a strong taste. It was mild and I thought the spicy tuna tasted more like salt tuna instead of spicy tuna. :/ Once my friend arrives, we decide to order 4 special rolls and share. We get the baked spicy roll, the holiday roll, the kanpai roll, and I think the last one was the Vienna roll. Anyways, they all came out and they looked great!!! I was excited to try them. I think my favourite roll was the Kanpai roll. It had the shrimp tempura on the inside and it was topped with flakes and salmon. It was definitely the best! I thought it had a good balance. I also loved the spicy mayo and the avocado on the top. The baked spicy roll wasn't very spicy at all. It had the same problem. It wasn't spicy, rather they just upped the amount of salt. It wasn't super good but I did like that it was unique. It was a cooked roll. The Holiday roll was probably my second favourite as it had a lot of raw fish. It had the salmon and tuna. They put nice large slices in it as well so I was pretty happy ! My only complaint would be that it was slightly bland. I felt like it needed some wasabi or some sauce on the inside to give it a kick taste. I also liked how it had the masago on the inside. And that leaves the Vienna roll. I didn't like this roll that much. It was supposed to have eel, Avocado and asparagus with masago on the outside. I could barely see the eel in my roll!! It was a huge let down as they gave out good portions in the Holiday roll and this one was skimpy with the eel. I wish it had more eel, and I thought that the masago was kind of skimpy as well. I think the service was good ,but it wasn't super memorable so I think that is why I am going to keep the rating at only a 3 stars. I thought the rolls were well priced though. Ordered a variety of standard rolls. They were not done properly. Spicy tuna was not mixed with any chili oil or sesame oil and only had a drizzle of "spicy mayo" on top. The supposed spice was overwhelmed with the eel sauce unnecessarily coating the roll. Sushi should not be sweet. Please go to So Cal to pick up some tips on good sushi making. Average quality sushi joint. Not too much attention paid to the cuts of fish and or less skilled people cutting them. Wait staff is ambivalent. Especially with the older woman, who really just needs to retire or find a line of work that she actually enjoys. About a 1-1.5: The hubs and I came to check out Yama for dinner. This Korean-owned Japanese restaurant seems to be a favorite of the locals, offering lunch/dinner/a la carte items such as gyoza, aged tofu, sushi, sashimi, and house special rolls. We tried their Stuffed Squid (boiled calamari, stuffed with seasoned rice, shad roe, and imitation crab; these were sliced, so they were literally rings of calamari (kind of looked like bone marrow or a sliced hardboiled egg); these were okay - the calamari wasn't really seasoned, as the 'flavor' was within the 'sushi rice'); Kushi Pork Katsu (skewers of pork tenderloin and peppers, coated with panko and fried; the pork was a little overdone; I did like the scallions here and there that were found; the side of the donkatsu sauce was bitter on its own, but was okay used as the dipping sauce); the Kushi Chicken Katsu (skewers of chicken and peppers, coated with panko and fried; these were slightly better than the pork; again, I liked the scallions more so than the meat itself; the meat for both katsu appetizers were just way too thick, and I can only imagine how larger of a portion they would be for an entree); Nabeyaki Udon (dashi and shoyu-based soup with udon noodles, some fish cake and vegetables; comes with a side of shrimp (1) and vegetable tempura; the noodles were overdone; I appreciate it coming in a very hot casserole pot, which made the soup stay hot; the broth was very bland, but adding some togarashi made it slightly better; the shrimp tempura was crispy, and I liked the little green beans, too); Oily Tuna (toro) (seasonal; this had a weird off taste to it); Yama Temaki (tuna, salmon, and yellow tail with avocado, cucumber, and masago; this was just okay; I actually only liked the rice and the nori); Salmon Skin Roll (the salmon skin was more chewy than crispy, no flavor, and definitely on the harder side where if you bite it the wrong way, it can really hurt the inside of your mouth!); Spicy Puff (spicy tuna) Kunkan (it looked like a roll with just a mound of minced spicy tuna; I was not a fan of this as it had a weird vinegary taste to it); and, a Baked Spicy Roll (baked California roll topped with spicy white tuna; the tuna was cooked slightly, due to having the rolls baked; it came out slightly warm, and it had a slight sweet glaze on it, which I wasn't a fan of). Three and a half. Located at the end of a strip mall with easy visibility from the road. Jeff W and I stopped here on his recommendation after failing to find another sushi bar. The Yama Zen deal is a great value: $20 for house salad, miso soup, shrimp & vegetable tempura, a fish choice (sushi/sashimi), meat choice (chicken/beef teriyaki), and dessert choice (ice cream or sherbert). A person with an average appetite will want to share this with someone, with perhaps one or two small a la carte items. I went with sushi, beef, and red bean ice cream selections. Jeff gleefully ordered hot house sake to combat the chilly evening. Salad and soup were pretty standard, the former being lightly tossed in a traditional dressing. Tempura had been drained almost completely, with the plate doily soaking up most of the residue. The quality of fish and rice were decent, with excellent knifework and the assembly consistency ranging from average to good. The california roll was the sloppiest in construction on my plate. Probably the only piece of nigiri I was truly disinterested in was the kani, since imitation crab is more of a filler ingredient to me than anything worth showcasing. Beef teriyaki wasn't too sweet at all, with an almost garnish proportion of lightly cooked vegetables. The New York steak had been tenderized and broiled perfectly, then cut into strips before saucing for just the right balance of chew. I often find teriyaki distasteful, but I'd actually be willing to get this again. The accompanying bowl of rice was a touch on the dry side, but still within reasonable limits of personal preference. I love azuki beans, so the red bean ice cream was right up my alley-- quick to melt, but just the right balance of creamy sweetness. Service was friendly and quiet, adding to the pleasantly cozy feel of the place. They managed to pace my courses visually without interrupting our conversation. Our server tittered a bit when she saw the dismay on my face at just how much food the Yama Zen was, but I determinedly made it through the meal by the grace of willpower. Another sushi-ppointment (that's sushi and disappointment put together if it isn't obvious)... My parents were in the mood to try a new sushi restaurant for dinner instead of frequenting the usual Sushi Yoshi, which is just a few minutes away from Yama. First, I must say that service is embarrassingly slow. My mom, dad, and I arrived at Yama at 5:01pm; they literally just opened the doors, so as you can imagine there were only two other parties already seated. It took a good ten minutes for a waitress to even notice us and it is quite difficult to flag down one of the many servers in the restaurant despite the establishment's small size... The moment I heard the sushi chefs and waitresses conversing in Korean, I started to have a bad feeling about the way this meal was going to go. Korean-owned sushi restaurants tend to be, for lack of a better word, bad. I'm not trying to insult my own peoples, but I have yet to try sushi at a Korean-owned sushi restaurant that is decently good. Anyways, my dad ended up ordering the Stuffed Squid (appetizer), a couple rolls, handrolls, and some yellowtail nigiri. The Stuffed Squid sounded interesting; as the name suggests, rice, roe, and imitation crab are stuffed inside sliced up pieces of calamari. This dish really fell flat for me because the squid was incredibly difficult to chew. Not good. The yellowtail, if you can even call it that, was so low in quality that it was almost laughable. The rolls were better - specifically the salmon skin roll...that was pretty much this meal's saving grace. The hand rolls were also a fail for me and my family. The nori was oddly thick and difficult to chew; the fish to rice ratio was poor. Be prepared to wait 30+ minutes for your sushi to come out even when it isn't busy. Yama seems to be quite the popular restaurant with many regular customers, so if you're thinking of making a visit on the weekends, I advise making a reservation ahead of time. This small cute restaurant is tucked away in Vienna. It's one of the places that has great food, great chefs, and good servers too. I always get something different and every time it tastes great. I never had to wait coz I came at very odd times. I used to wait in line to be seated but not anymore just coz I come at odd times and if there are no tables than you can always sit in the sushi bar and the sushi masters even give you free sushi sometimes. Came here with a group of 5 and we ordered 10 specialty rolls. The rolls are HUGE here so we definitely over ordered (as usual). They delivered our rolls in 2 separate batches and the first batch took a looooong time. The restaurant was fairly full for a weeknight but still - I have never had to wait that long for sushi before. The rolls were all just ok. The rice to fish ratio was decent but none of the sushi really blew me away. I am a bit of a sushi snob and maybe other places in the area have just ruined me. WOW, I must be the only person in NOVA who has never visited Yama! Based on yelper reviews, we scurried over to Vienna to check out this place. Parking was easy, and the restaurant was located in the corner of a long strip mall. The servers were quick to seat us and bring us drinks and menus. We wanted to try everything. We ordered several orders of sushi, including my favorite "Salmon Skin Roll". I noticed an interested blurb next to the Salmon Skin Roll (very crunchy). I LOVE a super crunchy skin and they absolutely delivered, the skin was so crunchy and yummy. We also ordered a plate of shrimp and veg tempura. It was perfectly fried and a nice big batch for a mere $7. The hubby loves his steak, and the menu had a NY Strip Teriyaki. That slab of beef was ginormous! Love this place! Its the only place I've given 5 stars to. I have been going here for years now and I feel like it gets better every year. The fish tastes fresh every time I go, the service is always on point and the owner is super nice. -This place always has good specialty rolls like the bubba roll :) Its a bit small and the weekends get super busy, so I recommend you make reservations. It's hard to find a good inexpensive, quality sushi place in Fairfax, VA - but this spot is it. It's run by Koreans but their rolls are pretty spot on with flavor and quality of fish. The servers weren't as attentive but it made up for the food. They have a lot of different special rolls and a vast regular menu. Favorite roll is definitely the oishi roll! A little spicy (I think they use korean spicy paste in the mayo sauce) but it went well with the overall flavor combination. Def a gem in a small shopping center. Come early! Having been here a few times, I can easily tell it's one of those neighborhood gems where people flock to. We went for lunch and left absolutely stuffed. My bf got a few rolls, and he loved them. Said the tuna and other fish was very tasty and fresh. I on the other hand, decided to get a salmon teryaki bento box. Now at first glance, this tiny piece of salmon looked small. But it was VERY WELL cooked. Moist, tender, well seasoned. The box came with tempura, california rolls, and little side veggies. I left so full, I was glad that my piece of salmon wasnt bigger.
