The staff graciously had hot coffee outside for everyone standing in line on this frigid, windy morning. A nice gesture, but I was DREAMING about going inside. 25 minutes later, we were seated... Right next to a window where other customers were waiting outside with their teeth chattering. I understood their pain. I hope they were able to live vicariously through my meal to distract themselves. We reviewed the menu when we were on line waiting so it took us no time to order. I went with the Sweet Potato Pancakes AND a side of the Chicken Mango Sausage, because why not? We also ordered the Millionaire's Bacon to split. To warm up, I ordered a Chai Latte (w/ almond milk). The Chai was extremely mild and the tea bag was taken out so I couldn't even try to steep it a bit more. Whatever. I was just happy to have a cup of something hot to defrost with. Then my pancakes came out, adorned with fresh berries and paired up with that bomb sausage on the side. You will see a fare share of extended waits on both a weekday and weekend, and so I suggest arriving early to snag a table. Service is prompt and the food arrives on your table in an appropriate amount of time. My boyfriend and I were staying in Union Square for the weekend and saw this place had amazing reviews. We decided to do the 30 min walk from our hotel and were so glad we did. Unfortunately, they don't take reservations for breakfast and the only way to join the waitlist is to go in-person to put your name down. It was a Saturday morning when we arrived and it was an hour wait. They will send you text where you can check your place in line and let you know when your table is ready. I could tell they take safety seriously and will ask you to wait across the street so a crowd doesn't gather near the entrance and where others are dining outdoors. They do also provide indoor dining as well. Once our table was ready, we were seated near a heater and you will be asked to leave your mask on until your food arrives or if you're enjoying one of their delicious beverages. I treated myself to a mimosa with their fresh squeezed OJ while we waited. For breakfast, I ordered the bulgogi scramble and my bf and I split a plate of pancakes. The bulgogi was marinated so well and the potato medley I absolutely loved because they were crispy and I could taste the herbs. The pancakes were fluffy and so good. I personally loved The Hip, but the hubs felt it was too crispy. He's also the guy who likes his 'toast' totally untoasted, for what it's worth. Tacos were generously filled with meat & eggs. Potatoes cooked to perfection. Also a WIN! And of course we had to have some Millionaire's bacon, which was worth the $13. You get 2 pieces, which is plenty since it's so rich. Interesting spot. Funny enough we were one of the last tables to get served before they had to close for maintenance. Imagine our confusion as we gradually see more and more empty tables at 11am on a Sunday at a San Francisco brunch spot! We were like.. was it really smart to get here early? The millionaire bacon sampler was amazing, such a curious way to make bacon. Others have written extensively about that. The mimosa I got was also super delicious. The coffee too. The only things that were mediocre were the actual entrees. I got the bulgogi scramble and it was a bit too sweet. The potatoes were a bit uninspired, seemingly steamed or something, lacking flavor. I found myself eating the bread mostly, but did I really come here for bread, coffee, and a mimosa? My fiancée got the egg soufflé thing which was well presented but a bit too eggy for me. I would give the entrees 2 stars, the sides and bacon 3.5. So overall combined with the service it's 4 stars. A nice experience. Yes, it is overpriced. They know they have a reputation and I wouldn't say the food quality for the entrees matches the price. The sides and drinks were great though. Would I come here again? Meh, probably not regularly. Our wait time was pretty quick, we got out bag and pretty much ate it immediately Millionarie's Bacon Original: Honestly, this is probably the best out of the four. It has the perfect combination of sweet, salty, and savory. Citron: This one was my lease favorite - too salty for my taste. I think adding sea salt to an already salted bacon is overkill Cinnamon: I didn't care for this one, Rosemary: This had a very nice aromatic and fragrant smell. Probably my 2nd favorite in this sampler. Verdict - I did enjoy the bacon; however, I recommending eating this with something else like eggs or grits, to help balance the flavors and textures. I'm not usually a breakfast person I much prefer lunch. But since we were flying back home around 2 pm and I hate flying full we decided to grave some breakfast before heading to the airport. Man o man am I glad we did. After changing my mind a half dozen times or more (everything sounds good) I chose the Oscar Benedict with the lemon hollandaise sauce and she chose the mariner add banana and walnuts and we had to try the seasonal Millionaire Bacon with pumpkin spice. I also tried two of their sausages the lime and my favorite the curry. All of it was beyond tasty. The bacon was think and meaty and just a little spicy, the Oscar was loaded with fresh crab and the eggs were poached perfectly. The French toast was crunchy on the edges and soft and gooey in the middle. I'm still salivating days later. Please do yourself a favor and go here over and over to try it all. This time we decided to try something new and got the bay bottom omelette as well. It was delicious . Highly recommend the bacon, bay bottom, fried FT and pork lime sausage. It was perfectly crispy and flavorful, just the way I like it. But here's the best part, their French toast was simply delightful. Always a line. A long, long line. That's the very first thing that comes to mind when I think of Sweet Maple. I've been wanting to come here for quite a while, but it's the line that has always deterred me, until today. I was up bright and early and mentally ready to bear the line at 9:30am. I was wishfully hoping there would be no line that early, but the wait was still about 30 minutes. Upon entering, I was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful the restaurant was. It was clearly built with design in mind, and when I left, I saw there was a plaque by the entrance that mentioned the name of the interior design firm they used. The space was open with clean lines and filled with plenty of light flooding through the large windows. Such a perfect space for a breakfast spot. There's even a small bar with additional seating. The Millionaire's Bacon is why many people come here. However, this is not the only place where you can get Millionaire's Bacon. Another place that comes to mind is Blackwood, another very popular brunch spot on Chestnut in the Marina neighborhood, just a few miles north over the hill, passing through Pacific Heights. Typically, I prefer my bacon thin and crispy, and the Millionaire's Bacon is just the opposite, being thick and void of any crunch. It's covered in a sugary honey like glaze, and goes nicely with any and all breakfast food. Really, it's that good. If you like bacon, you'll love this. Millionaire's Bacon alone is a good enough reason alone to brunch! I like French Toast, so how could I possibly resist Deep Fried French Toast? Well, I didn't resist, and placed my order promptly. I can be pretty indecisive about most things, but was very decisive about their "famous" dish, called the "Big Hip". It certainly was IG-worthy. I'm glad to have tried it, but don't think I'll be ordering it again. It tasted somewhat like an overly doughy beignet, and was definitely large enough for two to share. The Swedish pancakes came nicely presented. However, they were somewhat tough, and not at all soft and fluffy like buttermilk pancakes. I've had Swedish pancakes many times in other places, but they were substantially smaller in size, as these came out as large as the ones you'd find at an IHOP. If they were bite size, as they are in other places, the texture wouldn't have been as noticeable. I definitely would pass on the Swedish pancakes. Efficient and friendly service. I think we were asked about four times if we wanted coffee refills. No complaints here at all, and not understaffed, like many brunch places in San Francisco tend to be. Sweet Maple is a fun place to brunch for sure, if you don't mind the lines. I'm willing to return to try other items, and, of course, for the Millionaire's Bacon again. They had an Omurice dish that looked interesting. If you enjoy walking, you can wander along Fillmore Street afterwards, and check out some of the nice boutique shops in Pacific Heights. With both indoor and outdoor dining, our hostess was really on the move and determined to get everyone seated in decent timing.
