By the website we thought it would be a "Real Butcher Shop" and that is why we traveled from Sacramento to Sutter Creek. Nothing shows Swingle Meat Co is a "Real Butcher Shop", only a lot of same few cuts of meat that you get at grocery stores (tri-tip, chicken & what is labeled as Beef Kabobs - but if you know meat you know that these "Kabobs" which should be from a tender piece of beef appeared to be just "stew meat" - very tuff and stringy). The beef & chicken are soaked in a variety of same marinades and clear wrapped in the area where customers are allowed to go and buy. Very Expensive - and not "special to warrant the high prices"! My family was one of the 1st "real Butcher Shops" in California and I know what a Real Butcher Shop is - Swingles did not show me anything that I would describe as a real meat butcher shop. We now make this drive at least once a month to pick up the absolute best meat, bacon and sausages around! Be prepared for sensory overload when you first walk in! It's like a wonderland for the home cook. There is so much variety that it can be overwhelming and you won't know what you want to try first! We have loved everything we have tried. This place has an amazing selection of meats. Of course, the Kona tri-tip is king there. However, you cannot go wrong with any of the flavors of meat, chicken, pork, etc. We love getting the packs of chicken skewers/ka-bobs to go along with our tri-tip. I took a ride up here on a Saturday, took it back home and BBQd some items immediately Brats - which actually taste like meat and not anything you'll get in a regular grocery store. Kona tri-tip - it's delicious, not overly sweet and regardless at what temp you cook it (some of my cut was cooked to be well done) it's still super juicy and tender. Hardly any fat trimmings on the piece itself. I'm so glad I made the drive from Modesto to this little gem. Will definitely be back to try more items. Can't wait to try what else I purchased. The thing that makes this place a five star is their employees! At one point there was 20-25 people in this tiny place and all the employees immediately came out from behind the counter asking people if they had been helped or were ready to check out. In a matter of 5 minutes, everyone had been helped and were on their way. Hopefully next time their cordon bleu stuffed pork chop will be in stock. read more

I found the goodness known as Swingle Meat looking for butcher shops here on Yelp. I was a bit hesitant since I was driving from Elk Grove. I must say they have my family and I hooked, line and sinker. I was a little hesitant as well because the majority of what they sell is frozen, and I'm all about freshness. They have excellent tri tips, bacon, ham, and other selections fresh, not frozen. Their Kona marinade is a winner and everyone loves it. Char the tri tip and cook it medium rare and you'll have excellent sandwiches or you can carve it up. The bacon is smokier than what you'll find at your local grocer and in a way you have to aquire a taste for it. They ham is great and is leaner than what you'll find elsewhere. In the freezer section it is easy to be overwhelmed because they have a little of everything. Their Kona short ribs are nothing short of killer. They cook quickly, have excellent marbling, and melt in your mouth. Their Kona skirt steak is excellent too. Their chicken breasts are larger than you'll find elsewhere and when cooked properly are juicier and tastier. Some of the other gems are their ravioli and their beef ribs. The cool thing is if they have fresh meat available, they're willing to marinate it for you as you wish. All of their marinades are excellent; I wish they bottled and sold them. I ordered my prime rib and turkey from them for our Christmas feast and we were not disappointed. The prime rib was beautifully dressed and came out magnificent. The turkey was also beautifully presented and was already brined, seasoned, and stuffed. Both were better than anything we have gotten elsewhere. It was also much cheaper. You will love their down home friendliness, their excellent value, and quality. You won't leave disappointed. If anything, you'll start to fill up your freezer here rather than at Costco as we do. read more

Just last night I prepared one of their apple stuffed pork chops, DELISH! Needless to say, I think I will fix their Kona Chicken tonight, and then enjoy sandwiches the next day with the leftovers. I stopped here on the way to Markleeville and picked up jerky, bacon, smoked pork chops, ham steaks and regular pork chops. I admit I went a little nuts, because I couldn't make up my mind. Everything looked so good I had to be sure to cover all the bases. This place is overwhelming for a newbie. When I first walked in, I had no idea where to begin. There are refrigerators and freezers full of beef, pork and chicken and a butcher case with ham, bacon and jerky. Fortunately, the large staff behind the counters works fast and efficiently. This is imperative, as there is a constant stream of customers. I agree with other reviewers this store is hard to find because of its awkward location. My friend and I drove right past it and had to turn down a side road in order to come back around to access it. The easiest way to find it is look for it in the area that one would consider to be Martell, because the store is before the Jackson city limits sign. Good luck finding it. I stopped in for the first time while in the area, I asked the manager or the Owner (I didn't Ask) he was defiantly in charge. He was so nice and helpful, I asked what he would suggest to throw on the BBQ when I get back home. he said he had some good aged Rib Eye Steak, I said your the boss and knows what's good. Considering the reviews0 I was excited for this place Reality was much different. Most of the cuts are meat are frozen- many wrapped in white butchers paper so you can't even see what you are getting. Chicken breast was horrible. It was HUGE- turkey breast size - commercial bred chickens. Steak was horrible too - tough and flavorless. I know this can be a problem with much beef out here- "grass fed" when there is no grass most of the year. The majority of the store is pre-marinated cuts of meat. Some with very questionable looking "slices" of cheese on them. Not my thing- I like- and I know how to cook...and I want to see the quality of my meat first. I also don't want marinades breaking down the muscles or the fats for days (or...??? ) before I cook it. I get it- there aren't many options out here- but...seriously. Won't be going back. I'll drive to Sac or Placerville for fresh meat. Even some of the higher end stuff at Raleys or Safeway is better. One star because the staff is nice, the bacon is acceptable. read more

Wow! I was totally blown away by this place and will now become a regular. Its totally worth the drive from Big Trees (east of Arnold) to go to Swingle. I got several different meats to try out. The folks in the store were very help and friendly (including pointing me to the ribeye). I grilled the ribeye tonight using my usual prep (salt, pepper garlic - indirect heat for about 20 minutes then flames it for 3-4 minutes). The taste was as good as the best ribeye I've had, but the texture was outstanding; very very tender. This is the real-deal for butcher shops. Its worth a drive! read more
