This was our first Indian food experience in Cleveland, and if this is what people are calling one of the best in town, I'm going to be disappointed. We ordered: chole bhature, Tandul mixed chicken grill, dal makhani, goat biryani, garlic naan. The chole was highly Americanized, and was unlike any chole I've ever had in the US or in India. The bhature was thick and hard unlike any bhature I've had in the US or in India. It was more like Native American fry bread. The mixed chicken was awful except for the tandoori chicken. The dal was watered down and had almost no flavor. The garlic naan was good. The goat biryani was good. Highly unlikely we will be back. What a disappointment. read more

Tandul was everything that I'd hoped it would be! Such good Indian cuisine and music, where could you go wrong?! We tried the Taj Mahal beer (good) and ditto for cauliflower appetizer & the main chicken entree they recommended. Food was good, but Staff could be more polite. the food is flavorful and portion size is very reasonable. Prior to your dish they serve a quick appetizer with dip Slightly expensive but great taste as well. Will surely come back here. read more

Tandul's food is good and reliable for typical Indian restaurant food. There's nothing unique about it but it tastes good and is reliable. I usually get the butter chicken and the paneer tika masala. Both the dishes have been flavorful with adequate spice. The naan is a little above average in quality and taste. It's tricky making a perfect naan - lite and somewhat crispy but still mostly fluffy and soft; they don't quite have it down right but they're above average. The drinks are okay; nothing really great about their mixed drinks. The inside of the restaurant doesn't appear clean enough and the service is so so. The best Indian restaurant I have ever been to, anywhere. And I have traveled around the country and abroad including India. Truly, this place has now spoiled my neighborhood Indian restaurants for me. We started with the hot and sour soup with chicken for my husband, and the samosas for me. There is complimentary papadum to munch while you look at the menu. My husband was swooning over the soup. It was too spicy for me, but he couldn't stop talking about the blend of spices, and how the broth complimented the chicken and veggies. The samosas were good, but pretty much what you would expect. For me, the main courses were the stars. We had the malabar chicken and paneer pasanda. They were both delicious, with subtle spices and rich sauces. And the naan! Best naan ever. A little crusty on the bottom, soft on top, perfect for soaking up the sauces. Couldn't resist sharing the malai ice cream for dessert. It's house made saffron ice cream and Jeni's needs to make this flavor! I almost forgot- drinks are reasonably priced and delicious too. I had the mojito and my husband had the margarita. They both have twists on indian ingredients and were potent and very tasty. Service was fantastic. Friendly and informative and not overbearing. We will be back, soon. I absolutely LOVE this restaurant! I have tried a number of dishes and everything is always delicious. My favorite is the Kaju Curry. There is only one thing I would like to see the restaurant do...enable vegetable dishes to have the potatoes taken out. Other than that I have no complaints. I've had them add heat at level 4/5 and it's not that hot. You can tell there is some spice in there, but it's completely manageable. I enjoy adding siracha to my food and 4/5 isn't the same heat as siracha. The food comes out quickly and the order has always been correct. Remarkable flavors and spices (and yes, goat on the menu!) Both curry and masala are delicious. The service is unfancy, the wine list has not been updated so, there are a few wines that are unavailable. That is a little disappointing. The ambiance can be unpleasant of you are seated near the kitchen: the fridge in the back is just unsightly because it is dirty on the outside... Just imagine on the inside, and you may simply cringe. The Hollywood films playing on the big screen TV are hilariously reality-TV like. We had ordered Chilly Chicken, Angari Chicken, Goat Biriyani, Goat Curry, Onion Kulcha, Tandoori Roti and Butter Naan. The tables are waited by warm waiters who really care for your needs. We were greeted by two baskets of variety of Papaddam and chutneys. Meat were well cooked. The dishes were flavorful. Angari Chicken takes away the 'best on the table' crown. I took off a star because the waiting time is a bit more than the average. But it might be because it was a busy day for them and the business is just 4 months old. I would like them to improve on this front though. I would surely go back when I crave for Indian food again and definitely going to recommend my friends to go and try out the new joint. read more

My wife and I ordered take out this evening. We ordered one appetizer, two main dishes and a side of Nan. With a 10% tip, the total was $79.00. For the Tandoori Shrimp, they were badly over cooked and there were only 7 tiny shrimp. For nearly $20.00? Not worth it at all!!! Then, the other main dish was a recipe with goat. It was literally swimming in grease and had only 5 little pieces of goat. The rest were bones that were surrounded by inedible fat. Again, not worth it at all!!! We ordered food from Tandul using Uber Eats, which almost took around 50mins to deliver. Wait was not the bad part once we started dining. We ordered Paneer butter masala, methi matar, tandoori rotis and garlic naan. There was too much food color used in the paneer butter masala, our fingers got reddish due to that. Methi malai matar had no fenugreek flavor, just some random taste. Worst methi matar we have had. Tandoori roti was very thick and undercooked. Only saving grace was the garlic naan which was soft and tasty but due to the way it was packed, it became soggy around the edges. A big NO for us. read more

This Indian place took over the space of a former Turkish restaurant in Tremont. The bread and two dips served to start the meal were amazing. They followed the same format as other Indian restaurants but were superb. The crackers alone were so flavorful. I got the chicken tiki masala. It was served with rice, of which I was offered more if necessary. I got my meal a 5 on the 1-10 heat scale and I certainly could have gone higher. I'll probably try for an 8 next time. The flavor in the sauce was spot on, but some of the chicken pieces had a bit of an over cooked edge. The servers were very pleasant and service from the kitchen was fast. After hearing about this restaurant for a while, we decided to give it a try on a Saturday afternoon. Thought we would go for the buffet but I guess it is not there on the weekend. After being seated we ordered from the menu. The service was fast however not many tables were occupied. The prices are decent. Mango lassi was fresh and sweet. They serve pappad on every table. Nice and crunchy. For starters ordered the angaari chicken which was red and colorful barbecue chicken served sizzling hot. Had a nice spice but could have been a little moist. The yellow dal tadka was flavorful and garlicky. The kids felt it was a little spicy. White rice is served with each dish. The tandul special chicken biriyani was cooked to perfection. A little cinnamons and adequately spiced. Now there are a lot of of indian options all over town but if you happen to be in tremont area would consider giving this restaurant a try if in the mood for indian flavors. read more

Great take out! Hit the spot! I love Indian food, but I can never remember what dishes I like the most. I probably always get the lamest thing. Today, we ordered a veg chettinad and samosas for lunch. It was delicious! The samosas, there were three of them, were pretty big and nicely spiced. Veg Chettinad had a tasty tomato sauce and a lot of veggies: carrots, potatoes, green beans, onions, peppers, cauliflower, and more. I asked for a spice level seven, which was the right amount of heat for me. I wasn't sweating, but I felt a burn. The price was reasonable. It was about $20 for everything, and the entree was a generous portion. I don't think you can dine in due to COVID, but it seems like some people were eating outside where they have some tables streetside. You order at the bar, and while it as being made, we walked down to Tremont Scoops to have ice cream before lunch. When in Rome! The timing was perfect, because it took about 15 minutes, and it was ready exactly when we got back. read more

We ordered two dishes, Chicken Manchurian( Contained Extremely High Amount of Salt), Nabaratna Korma which was full of cashew nuts although I already informed them twice about my severe nuts allergies. Additionally the veggiesin KORMA were not cooked properly. Then they changed the korma and we ordered daal , because we did not have any other options. I would have give them one star but just because of the daal, I am giving them two stars. If you are thinking to try some authentic Indian food, then you are in wrong place!!! Papad and Chutney served when you sit down. It's free. I loved the Manchurian Gobi and hubby loved Apollo Fish as appetizers. I found the Manchurian Gobi to be more similar to the Gobi 65 I have had at other restaurants (Vancouver, NYC, Maryland) than the Gobi 65 they offer. Their Manchurian Gobi is sauced and has some bell pepper and onions also. Their Gobi 65 is fried spicy cauliflower without sauce. I've had both and prefer their Manchurian version. Hubby loves the Afghani Lambchops. They looked good to me, and I'm a vegetarian! I enjoyed my Paneer Butter Masala and a Black Currant Martini. They had 5 Indian beers on offer. Some restaurants skate by with just Taj Mahal and maybe 1 other. Husband appreciated the extra options. I had Kashmiri Naan as my dessert. Yes, it wasn't listed as dessert, but it's sweet so why not. Hubby had Carrot Halwa. He said it was great. Key point: Be careful with the spice level you order. They ask you how much spice you want on a 1 to 10 scale. My husband likes "Thai hot" Thai food, atomic bomb wings, and full on hot Mexican peppers. I've seen him drink hot sauce (from the bottle). He got a level 7 and said it was perfect. Go higher than that at your own risk. I suspect it will clear your sinuses. I had a medium level at 5. Finding the right spice level might take trial and error and will be restaurant specific. I would err on the mild side myself. Just know if you order your food too spicy, you won't taste anything except hotness. Your eyes will water, and your nose won't stop running. Just awful service, and so-so food. I'm hoping for the owners' sake that the recent Sunday night we visited was just an off night. Really off. Seemed like every table was unhappy with the service--we certainly were. Got handed drink menus (only) on arrival then 10 minutes later we had to go to the bar to place a drink order and get dinner menus. Empty tables sat with dirty dishes waiting to be bussed. Another 15 minutes later we had to flag down the bartender to place a food order, which we soon converted to takeout. The food was ok. Except they seemingly paid no attention to the requested spice level as the vindaloo (supposed to be very spicy) caused barely a tingle. An unassuming gem of a restaurant. Went for a date on a Friday evening and was surprised to see the place barely half full. The menu is extensive but the server was helpful in helping us choose. We got drinks, naan, and two entrees (one vegetarian and one meat). Everything was excellent! The server was sweet and attentive. My only qualm, which is minor, is that the decor is a bit dated. From the outside, Tandul doesn't look very impressive as it is on the first floor of what appears to a converted house, but on the inside, it has a very rustic, homey feel with old hardwood floors, patched plaster walls and doors and windows leftover from bygone days. The restrooms and visible tiny kitchen in the back are well-worn but functional. The old school bar in the front was very nostalgic. We came on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was mostly empty when we arrived but filled up quickly. It was not packed like many of the trendy spots on Professor Ave, but it had a nice mix of young and old. The many Indian patrons was a testament to the authenticity of the food. My group ordered a sampling of appetizers and curry dishes. All of the dishes had a spicy kick but not overpowering. Our Indian companion found the sauces and flavors to be spot on. Like most Indian places, the portion sizes are small for the price so you do have to order several items. The worst restaurant. My family went for dinner tonight. They served us rotten goat masala. My wife , my son and I all are throwing up after eating. The owner also charged me for the goat masala in-spite of showing him the food was rotten. He started arguing about how good the food at his restaurant, then admitted that he goat was made 1 day before. I was stunned at the the attitude of the owner. I say homey because it feels very much like a house on the inside but that's certainly not a bad thing! Nice addition to the Tremont neighborhood. Although I do miss Istanbul and Dervish, the last two cohabitants of this space, I was quite happy to hear of the new Indian restaurant to join the restaurant scene. As the Ohio City and Tremont neighborhoods lack an Indian restaurant- when I heard it was open, I came with a group of friends to try out the restaurant. We got the lunch buffet- for a cheap 10 bucks. I thought it was a large portion of food including butter chicken, chicken milwa (sp)?, biryanis (which were quite spicy), other dishes I don't really know, carrot halwa, etcera. I thought all the flavors were strong and flavorful- it wasn't too spicy but also wasn't too mild- in addition, I liked the non ending supply of plain and butter naan that was coming to our table as well. The service was good and I thought the food was cooked well. It's a nice addition to add to the Indian restaurants in the area- and you really can't beat that price. Wow. Great food! The Chicken Tikka Masala is a safe (and delicious) bet, but everything I've tried, from the Goat Vindaloo, to the Afghani Lamb Chops, to the Tandoori Shimp are incredible. Don't be afraid to branch out here! Also, if you're looking for a happy hour snack, the Samosa and Gobi 65 appetizers are perfect with a cold beer. I get fierce cravings for Indian food on a weekly basis, and this place has blown me away each time. However, since they're a new restaurant, there have been some issues with service. Never any rudeness - and this absolutely should NOT deter you from checking Tandul out - but in the few times I've been there, the kitchen and waitstaff have some communication issues, leading to some timing problems. For example, last time I was there, the shrimp and lamb were served first (both being quick cooking dishes), while the curries took considerably longer. Basic timing mistake, but I chalk it up to "new restaurant" issues. By the time you read this, they'll probably have many of these issues ironed out. Go check Tandul out. If nothing else, it's a great changeup from the other options on Professor Ave. read more
