First time at Tanuki Curry House and definitely not the last. I will be back! The Katsu chicken curry is delicious. It is legit. The beef udon bowl is fantastic and the lumpia is authentic. Service is warm and efficient.

I came to Tanuki Curry House for a weekday lunch. Parking was relatively easy in the parking lot and the restaurant was not too busy on a Wednesday. The interior was cute with the bear logo. I perused the menu and settled on the tonkatsu with curry. The tonkatsu was fried well with a nice crust, and the pork was tender and juicy. The curry sauce was not warm enough for my tastes, and was good but nothing mind-blowing. I added the miso soup and choice of salad (cucumber, wakame, or mixed green) for an additional $5. Service was friendly and overall it was a solid meal, with prices reasonable.

We ordered take-out on line. The first thing I noticed was delicious aroma in car on the way home. The Chicken Katsu was perfect and the curry was amazing. We also had Udon Curry which was too heavy for me, but my husband loved it. The Gyoza were delicious and the Edamame was fine. Parking was easy in little lot and order was packed perfectly.

Honestly, I had expected more. I wanted to experience the rich flavor of Japanese curry. What I received was good but it was lacking the rich, mellow, and flavorful taste mixed spices blended with the sweetness of hours of simmering the vegetables. Instead I tasted hot and spicy. It wasn't bad, just a let down. The katsu was crisp and crunchy, the way I like it. Staff were friendly and attentive. Clean aesthetics throughout the restaurant.

I missed the traditional Kashiwa Sushi restaurant that it replaced, but not as much after I had a taste of the katsu curry at Tanuki. It's literally the best katsu I had in my life, and I've been around for a while as a Yelp Elite. The outside of the katsu was light and crispy without being oily, and the inside remained tender and flavorful. Our Rotary Club in Signal Hill had our social night at Tanuki, and we had a great time with very attentive service.

TL:DR - Good curry, sad katsu size Located in a small strip mall with ample parking, Tanuki Curry House serves up Japanese curry. Most places serving japanese curry these days use a pre-made golden curry blocks, so finding restaurants that make their own is always thrilling. Tanuki's curry is thick and has a peppery taste to it. There is a bit of sweetness that might be onions that balances out the pepper. Poured over katsu and rice it's heavenly. I got the tonaktsu plate and was disappointed with the size of the filet. It was just about the size of a chicken tender, and for the price of $19.89 it's a real bummer. They were generous with the rice and the fukujinzuke, but that doesn't make up for the cost. Overall the curry was good, unique, and tasty. If you like curry then this place is worth a try

We came to Tanuki on a Saturday evening. We got in at 7:30 and stayed past closing (we didn't realize they closed at 8). Upon arrival, they were happy to have us and told us last call was 7:45pm. We all put in our order and the food came out around 8. The staff was very accommodating and refilled our water at least three times. They didn't bring us the bill until 8:25pm. The restaurant itself was a good size with many tables in a corner strip mall. Despite that, the restaurant still had a cozy feel to it with Japanese art and faux advertisements throughout. Parking was ample since all the other shops were already closed when arrived for dinner. The reason I'm giving a 4 however is because despite the excellent service, the food did not blow me away. I had the Keema curry, which wasn't bad but didn't exactly hit the spot (I've been searching for a good Keema Curry to make me forget that Curry House is extinct). The Tanuki curry had a lot more vegetables than the defunct Curry House and I kiss the tofu in Curry House's version. I would come here again but for the Chicken or pork cutlet curry. :)

Oh boy, was I HYPED that we got another legit Japanese restaurant in this area of Long Beach--and one specializing at curry at that! I came for a weekday lunch and it did not have to wait at all, despite the plaza seeming pretty crowded. Decor inside was really cute, I liked the vibe--you can notice some of the remains of the layout of the former sushi restaurant that was here. Service was fast and food came out very fresh and pretty quickly! We shared the curry fries which was a pretty heaping serving of fries--super hot and fresh, and the side of curry sauce was pretty good. I opted to get the Tonkotsu curry, of which I really enjoyed the plating and presentation--looked delicious and very neatly and cleanly laid out. The Tonkotsu used a great cut of pork, and was super fresh, hot, and crispy. In fact it might be one of the best Tonkotsu's I've ever eaten because the balance was really great. The curry itself was pretty good although it felt a bit lukewarm when it came out. Note that you can't select a spice level but it did have a bit of a nice kick to it which I appreciated. I would say the curry flavor was a bit on the simpler side and did not have as much depth as some other places, which did make room for the Tonkotsu which was really the star of the plate. I do wish they had veggies in it like their beef curry has. They have a decently sized menu of other offerings--curry udon and non-curry dishes which I'll definitely be back to try! Really glad this place is here in Long Beach when normally you'd have to head to a neighboring city to get Japanese food this good!

My wife and I really enjoyed our curry dinner at Tanuki. She got the chicken, and I had the tonkatsu. My pork was both tender, juicy, and deep fried katsu style. The curry was delicious, though I wish we could have had it with more spiciness. Service was friendly and quick. All in all, we're glad that a Japanese curry place is in Long Beach. We use to have to go to Torrance whenever we had the hankering for some katsu curry.

This is a take-out experience. I love Japanese curry and katsu, so I was thrilled to hear that this place opened in the area. While there are other Japanese cuisine restaurants in the area, katsu and curry are not their focus (ex: ramen, sushi). Tanuki Curry House's packaging for to-go order was really great. Having this restaurant adds diversity to the neighborhood, and I hope they get to stay open for a long time! * Popcorn shrimp: when you order take-out, they package the sauce separately, which I liked; it allowed me to control the amount of sauce coating each individual shrimp. I am interested to try the fully coated version if I were to dine-in (will save it for future). * Tonkatsu Curry: The katsu is lightly breaded, and they gave just the right amount of curry on the side. Because it was a take-out, the katsu got a little soggy on the bottom, so I am excite to try the real thing when I dine-in next time. The pork was tender and it was the right amount of portion size for me. * Beef curry udon: The beef was tender and flavorful, and the udon was bouncy. The curry soup was packaged separately as well, which I also loved. The curry soup could have been just a very very tad less watery with more flavor, but it could also be because I had the regular curry from my Tonkatsu Plate to compare. We waited inside while picking up our order, and the inside is really clean, very well maintained, the wall decor is so whimsical and cute, and they have plenty of tables. The staff was really kind too.

This place was so yummy and the staff here are so friendly! I got the regular Tonkatsu curry to go while I met my boyfriend up for dine in there. I was on a time crunch so it was nice to have everything still fresh and packaged nice and neatly! The curry was very flavorful and the breading on the tonkatsu was just as yummy. I would definitely recommend dining in if you have a chance because the portions are huge! I gotta compare it next time to dining in person with the same entree but it should be similar. Definitely coming back 8.5/10

    Curry udon with chicken

I noticed this place from across the street, and suddenly thought yeah I'd like a bite of Japanese curry. Something hearty and filling cause I was famished. Nujabes' "Reflection Eternal" was playing in the background when I went in. I ordered a curry udon with chicken. The restaurant had just opened for the day, so for a while I was the only one there. The waitstaff who took my order also helped set the table as well as brought out my bowl when it was ready, so points for running a tight ship. On first impressions, the udon was almost completely submerged in the sheer volume of soup which was topped with green onion and carrots. Chicken had decent flavor on its own, and the texture of the noodle was good. The main critique I have was on the curry soup itself. While there was a lot of it, the flavor felt watered down and lacked heartiness which might translate to meatiness or fat. There seemed to have been more emphasis on some kind of pepper, and unfortunately this flavor blanketed everything else. Overall, left feeling full but not too sated.

New Japanese Curry restaurant in Signal Hill. It's located directly across from Costco. Nice sized parking lot and easy to find a spot. We went for an early dinner on a weekday evening. The meals can be upgraded to a combination that includes miso soup and salad. We opted not to order combos in case it was too much food as we wouldn't be able to bring leftovers with us (and we love leftovers!). I ordered the Katsu (pork) Curry, consisted of Katsu, Curry, and rice. The pork was very tender and the coating light and fried just right, not greasy. The Curry had a little kick to it, very good. My husband ordered the Chicken Katsu, also a good choice. They also offer some very tempting appetizers including Lumpia and Karage Chicken! Next Visit! Our server was very pleasant and attentive. We definitely wiill be returning! We like Japanese Curry and hapoy to.have a place in Long Beach!

The employee at the cash register was patient as I inquired about the many options/combinations I could choose on their menu. I ended up building my own bento box with the Wagyu Sukiyaki Beef. I also decided to upgrade to the Sushi Rice and add some Citrus Ponzu for more zing. My first thought of the beef was that this tasted oddly similar to what you would get as a Yoshinoya Beef Bowl which anyone can enjoy at a fraction of the cost. However, paired with the Sushi Rice and the Citrus Ponzu, it is no longer comparable. This place wins hands down. The bento box also came with bean sprouts, cucumbers, and pickled radish. I quite enjoyed the meal. The beef was placed on top of a bed of spring mix which had me somewhat disappointed since the price point was fairly high for the amount of beef you receive with your order. Otherwise, it was a delicious meal that I am sure I will get again. They have other beef options that also sound very appetizing, so I'll probably opt for those in the near future to get the full experience. Just be aware that this food hall can get very busy and finding seats can be challenging... parking too.
