Haven't been to Tasty Choice for long time and kinda miss their Eel with curry rice. Isn't it perfect since I have to be in that area with my coworkers for work related matters. So, lunch at Tasty Choice had been confirmed. Got there around 1:30. Walked straight to their patio section so we can have a smoke when we are waiting for our food. Going through their lunch special menu and wondering what is so special about those items base on the selection and price. Fine with me since i'm set for what i want so heck with that pricey lunch special. Ordered two lemon ice tea, the eel with curry rice and the zucchini with beef rib eye slice. Got our free soup right after we ordered along with our lemon ice tea. So far, sound like everything is great and on track rite? I wish. Hell is slowly coming... Soup aka water with veg.: I understand it's free but y bother to serve your customer that kind of crap. One spoon of it and that's the end of it. Food: DISAPPOINTED!!! EEL with curry rice - eel is not fresh and taste like it was out in the open for couple days. Nasty taste. Split it out immediately and I have a feeling that i might have a diarrhea sooner or later. Complained to the server and exchanged to pan fried chicken and pork steak with mushroom sauce. When I'm waiting for that, tried the other dish: zucchini with beef rib eye slice. Food was disgusting. Had the baked spaghetti and the red bean ice. The red bean ice was a bit odd as it was blended smoothie style with a scoop of ice cream but I was up for trying it. The ice cream was standard vanilla but I swear they blended that thing so that they could skimp on the red bean. It didn't taste like red-bean at all. Just starchy ice. The baked spaghetti had been baked too long. The cheese was too crunchy and hard and just became random flakes of semi-crunchy cheese in the spaghetti once it was mixed. I've been coming here for close to 8 years now and I've rarely ever had a bad experience. The workers are very attentive and often come to check on you. They have some of the best iced tea in the SGV area and it's something I always order every time. Their beef clay pots are among some of the best I've had and will continue to enjoy in the future. Sometimes I'll call in, get my order in and done. One situation that recently happened. My brother and I ordered the Baked Mince meat w/ Cheese and Pork Chop baked fried rice. We attempted to order their Chili Cheese Fries(Which is listed on their Chalk Board Menu) The worker over the phone said they didn't have "Chili Cheese Fries" but had Mince meat fries or Bacon Cheese Fries. We went with the latter because its still a good option. But when I got there to pick up the food, I saw on their chalk board "Chili Cheese Fries" I asked why that was, and that we couldn't order the Chili Cheese Fries over the phone and the worker told me that he gave us the option of both "Bacon Cheese Fries/Chili Cheese Fries. When in fact, they denied us of Chili Cheese Fries because, more than likely, they didn't understand what Chili Cheese Fries were and know it as Mince Meat w/ Cheese Fries. Made me very irritated when I saw the sign saying, In English, Chili Cheese Fries(We tried to order it in English, which prompted us to get the 'we don't have it') only to see it on the menu as what we asked for. In Cantonese, it's pronounced "Hoy Non Guy Fon" NOT to be confused with "Hoy Non Gay Fun," which can refer to something completely different and get you in some deep trouble when ordering. Now, their Hainan Chicken may not be as flavorful as Savoy Restaurant fairly close by, but I just love the meal as a whole. With generous portions, the Chicken is tender, and they de-bone it for you. Rice and ginger sauce are both excellent. I usually ask for extra ginger sauce. Most of their other dishes are really great too. FAMILY BUSINESS: Service is very friendly and run by a nice family who remembers you if you are frequent customers. I have been coming to Tasty Choice for a long time. I used to live across the street from them, and go there three times a week. My favorite has always been hainam chicken rice. Today, I came here with grandparents and little brothers after I have not been here for a long time. I expect them to be just how I remember them. The food were good and solid as I expected. I was not disappointed at all. The service was excellent. The older gentleman kept asking if my grandma is okay, very nice and courteous. And the waiters kept telling us thank you for coming in. They know that grandparents have a hard time walking and getting in and out of their home, so for them actually coming to a restaurant is something very rare. when we're on our way home, grandma kept talking on and on about how good her meal was and how happy she was. Not sure what happened to this place but the food doesn't taste as good as before. They changed their menu and staff. I use to love the chicken steak with spicy garlic sauce but this time when I went the sauce had no flavor and tasted very bland. The portion and display was good but the food doesn't taste good. On top of that, since we weren't all that satisfy with the food we only left a 10% tip which is normal for a Chinese restaurant during lunch time. But to our surprise the waiter confronted us about the 10% and gave us dirty looks as walked out of the restaurant. I also forgot to add, back in February I went there to eat and ordered the curry chicken. The chicken in the curry came out half cooked. I ended not eating the whole thing and later that night had a stomache. I wanted to give this place another try since this has always been my go to place for the past 8 years in Los Angeles. The Hong Kong style wonton noodle was as good or may be even better than what you can get in HK these days. Many run of the milk noodle places in HK no longer serve this kind of noodle anymore. They would opt for ones that can be cooked quickly thus too soft and no good. The noodle restaurant in the HK international airport is one example. Anyway, the menu includes many curry dishes which are my favorite. Lunch Manu prices are average. Many Cantonese speakers here. My friend ordered the baked sole (B on menu), for someone who does not like fish or seafood, that was quite nice. The spinach and the cheese really worked well to cover the fish smell/texture/taste. I barely tasted the fish and it tasted like cheese bake. My other friend ordered pork cutlet off their lunch special menu. I did not taste it but I'm sure it was very filling and delicious seeing as she did not even finish it and had to take it back. My lamb also came with a mix of broccoli, cabbage and carrots. I hate vegetables but when drenched in the lamb's sauce, I managed to gulf down two broccolis =P. All of what we ordered also came with the option of hot/iced lemon tea, milk tea and something else that I forgot. Imo, the lemon tea was too sweet for my taste. Just imagine those lemon drop candies, melted down and mixed in with black tea and cool them. That is what you get for their lemon tea. I think there's an ownership change lately. The Korean kimchi beef stew used to be very thick sauce and yummy,but today what I got was a significantly "water down" version. I was given two containers of the stew (I ordered to go), but it's useless unless it tastes how it should taste :( Luckily,the beef doesn't taste too bad at all, but I'm 100%sure it's not the same recipe as it used to be! Out of all the Chinese cafes, I'd say Tasty Choice is one of the best. Great service. They've always been really nice and respectful to me. Long waits, they've handed me a menu so they can take my order first so I wouldn't have to wait long once I was seated. Refills are never an issue. The food? Great tasting. Parking can be kind of scarce during peak hours as it is a shared parking lot with limited spaces so you might need to park on the street. Big plates of food for a pretty good price. With every order, you receive a simple yet savory bowl of soup and with some entree orders you also receive rice or pasta (opt for the pasta-- it's yummy!) and a drink. Finally at the end of the meal, they bring a square of jello! Plus points for the sides. I've tried: -Fu Chow Fried Rice - huge plate with shrimp, chunks of white fish, squid, peas, mushrooms, and egg. Absolutely delicious!! -Wonton Soup and Pork Chop - wontons were actually dumplings, mediocre dumplings at that; pork chop was tender but I didn't care for the pepper seasoning -Braised Beef Shortribs - loved it!! Gigantic hunk of meat, even the veggies were delish -Eel Fried Rice - eel was tasty, curry was too spicy for my liking (but note that I'm super weaksauce) -Beef Clay Pot - tender and delicious! Awwww yeah. I've been coming here since the rollerblading rink near Tasty Choice was still relatively new. I love that they give you soup in the beginning. I love that they give you jello at the end. I love their free refills on their iced tea or milk tea. The two items that I always order when I come here are the baked sole filet with spinach, and the short ribs in pepper sauce. Best dishes ever! Both of these items, being on their "special menu", come with free iced tea or milk tea, and your choice of rice or noodles. Service is usually decent, but there is a clear drop in servers' attentiveness when they are busy. There is a patio to the side for people who want to smoke while they eat. For Hong Kong style cuisine, this is one of my favorite spots. I've been coming here for years and their delicious food never fails to disappoint. They food comes in very large portions and I usually take it to go and enjoy it for several meals afterwards. Their lemon iced tea is the best. It has the right blend of tea, lemon, and sweetness and I have yet to find another place that does it as well as here. Their specials all come with a bowl of soup and jello as their dessert. Our usuals are the hainan chicken, the kalbi ribs with rice, the orange chicken, the half baked chicken with rice, and sometimes their baked pasta. All of them are delicious depending on your mood. The place does get busy during the peak hours, but the service is always cordial.
