I met up with friends last night here as I was not happy with a few neighboring establishments. I needed a friendly upbeat friendly atmosphere and we found exactly that here. One of our clients booked a lunch here for us to have a meeting. We got a pretty large table on the corner. It was pretty empty for it being lunch time so there was no wait. Our server was pretty decent but kept missing one side of the table during drink orders and food orders and we had to call her back over. The flatbreads were pretty tasty and we got a couple for table to split. One of my coworkers and I were trying to be healthy so grabbed Cesar salads and even though we knew it was just a salad, it was pretty lackluster. This place is definitely the local sports bar around the island. It's very friendly and laid back. The bartenders Jackson and CJ were both really kind and gave good service. I give the burger a 10000 out of 10, the tomato soup a 8/10, and the pasta with clams unfortunately a 0. The pasta tasted awful and old honestly. BUT. I love the half-basement setting! It set the tone for the meal. I had an old fashion, burger, and glass of Merlot. All were great. We tried various items: chicken pot pie 10/10 Fish and chips 8/10 Tacos 6/10 - hard to compete with tacos in San Diego Soup and grilled cheese 7/10 - I wish there was more flavor to the soup. We ate our way through Coronado and this was by FAR the highlight in terms of food. The ambiance was so much more than we anticipated too. Great moody lighting and fun music. I got the Grilled Bacon & Blistered Shishito Pepper Burger and a Pupil. Overall there wasn't anything wrong with it, but had this liquid smoke thing that was a little off putting for me. We've dined in here twice already 'coz I like that they change their Menu from time to time. We always sit on their Patio area 'coz we always have our 18 years old Dog Bambam with us. We like their steak and pork chop, we used to get their Porterhouse and Pork chop here , but when we came back after a few weeks, the menu had changed again. And I got my Chicken Pot Pie, it was an amazing one, the pastry was so crisp and it was a well seasoned chicken pot pie. Our Shrimp appetizer was very small in Portion, but the Taste was so good and very fresh , we like it a lot, my son was able to eat them 'coz they weren't too spicy at all. For Dessert we noticed that they didn't go all out making dessert here, there weren't much selections. My son chose the Churros and it was okay, just typical Churros. For my Drink, I always get their  FRENCH MARTINI every time that we visit, it's a delicious drink, it had a very fruity flavor. I hope that when they change the Menu again, they put back the Porterhouse and Pork Chop 'coz those are our Favorite here. The ambiance is nice, it has an open space, and the service was great. Parking is tough, but Coronado is a nice place to walk around, so even if you park a bit further you will enjoy sight-seeing around the mini shops, restaurants, beach, and the Hotel Del Coronado. read more

While staying nearby, in downtown San Diego, we came to Coronado for the evening and stopped in here... We decided on The Tavern because of all the great reviews and this place definitely didn't disappoint! Our service was excellent, from the host greeting & seating us, to our server and the speed of our service. The menu was really nicely done, loaded with nice bar bites, as well as bigger plates. Wine line and cocktails are done quite nicely here too. We started with their Mexican shrimp which was grilled and served with their romesco - It was OUTSTANDING! The shrimp was fresh and tasted great on their own, but the sauce and pickled veggies were a very nice touch. But while eating this, we were still deciding on main courses and after seeing the sliders walk by, I wanted those. I NEVER order sliders, as they're typically overdone. But something about the way these looked and the description of them and their burger in the menu told me I was in for a treat. I most definitely had some of the BEST hamburger I've ever had! The sliders were the best for sure, but if they do their burgers that same way (referring to the meat, which is local grass fed beef, hand packed, perfectly cooked to temp over a wood flame, with a kiss of smoke to the fatty parts of the meat - WOW!), then they probably make some of the best burgers I've ever had! Nice location but a bit overpriced. The ceviche for $17 was pretty high for like 3 shrimps cut up, the chips were stale, but the seasoning was spot on. The wedge salad was pretty much a 1/8 of a tiny ice berg lettuce cut in 2 with 3 cherry tomatoes cut in half, dried up bacon bits, literally 4 little slicers of red onion, and the smallest amount of blue cheese dressing, had to ask for some more on the side. The steak was small and meh, but the tavern burger not on menu - just burger with lettuce tomato and cheese was phenomenal!!! I would come back for the burger only. (Ok - more like take out burger instead of returning) We had also Mac and cheese, kind of liked it but didn't, it was a bit wet and runny so not like thick cheese or a lot of cheese, it was just a bit close to ok but also a bit like I want to return this because it's not only watery but over cooked pasta... maybe the small amount of crusty cheese on top was perplexing. read more

Hubs got the wagyu steak and loved it. I got the cauliflower steak (cauliflower done three ways) and it was good. A little spicy, well seasoned, very tasty. Came here to watch the SDSU game so sat at the bar. Nice spot "underneath" the building, hence Tavern. Well decorated and spacious. All wood goes well with Tavern feel. Bartenders, particularly CJ, were friendly and attentive. We enjoyed our sangria and beers with crispy chicken wings appetizer as well as the chicken pot pie and pork chops with risotto. Staff is super friendly and the food was good. A but if a wait but it was to be expected on a Friday night. Had the halibut and filet mignon tacos along with the brussels sprouts. The standout was the ancho chile balsamic reduction in the sprouts - it was absolutely delicious. The Ginger & Sage cocktail was so good and made with local Malahat ginger rum. The Fig & Orange was slightly sweet and perfect for the season. Dubs Jr. got the kid's burger which he enjoyed and we loved that they had lots of options for kids that were more than just mac and cheese and chicken fingers. My boyfriend and I came on Valentine's for dinner. They have cozy seating inside or outside, with heat lamps available outside. For food we ordered the crab cake, steak tacos, pork chop, beet salad with chicken, and the cake dish available. It was disappointing to be served a single crab cake, it would have been nice to have been prewarned on this. The flavor and taste was good though. Steak taco flavoring and portion sizes were on point. Probably my favorite part of the meal. The pork chop sauce was delightful, but the risotto was bland on its own and unseasoned. I had ordered the beet salad with chicken, but they interpreted that I wanted a beet salad and the chicken entree. We had to wait a little longer for this to be corrected. It was such a small portion and so plain that I forgot to take a picture. The dessert took an immense amount of time to be served, and was subpar. Some pieces of cake were doused in bourbon whereas other pieces were completely dry. The atmosphere is cool and drinks are yummy but food was not so great. read more

Very disappointed given the price point. The Mac and cheese was so bland, the shrimp were super over cooked. The chicken pot pie had no salt and was also so bland. The fish and chips was ok, the French fries were really good that was the only thing worth spending money on. All in all I'm super upset we spent $100 on this crappy food. It wasn't disgusting just not good. That's why it gets 2 instead of 1 star. If it were half the price I wouldn't be leaving this bad review. read more

Very thing was delicious. We walked in right at the start of the dinner hour. The was great--simply put a burger and fries and fish and chips. We gave up one order of fries for a side salad. We also couldn't pass up and order of roasted Brussels sprouts. The cocktails were yummy and refreshing. To top it off, we were served a freshly in store baked chocolate chip cookie with vanilla ice cream and a candle for the birthday lady. Last but not least, the service was excellent. Came here on a Friday right when happy hour was starting, got greeted and seated quickly, staff was very friendly and attentive. The ambiance was nice cool dark, very nice on a hot day, nice breeze inside. Also really cool features they had. Very rustic but modern in a way. Food was amazing! We got the Brussels sprouts and the steak tacos for appetizers, two IPAs and the perfect margaritas, very tasty and the drinks very well mixed. We also ordered some burgers, sandwich and the sliders. We walked by and didn't realize there was a gem of a place right next to Del Coronado hotel. Excellent food for an unassuming restaurant and our waiter was great. What a unique underground place, The Tavern is certainly not below grade. Located in the middle of the Coronado village it is to find and miss. (Parking in this area is extremely tough - so plan accordingly.) Look for the recessed "Tavern" name and then walk down(see my pic of our view from our booth) a set of stairs to the restaurant. Once inside, it is very reminiscent of the old dark wood, lowly lit eastern taverns - a very homey feel. We were grazing our way through Coronado and stopped mid-afternoon. We started with their Great Old Fashions. These were good and served appropriately garnished, see pic. But most impressive were the Angus Sliders. The burgers were prepared as requested and were quite juicy for a small patty. The buns, while oversized, didn't overpower the beef. These were a nice snack. The French Fries were average and were under salted (this is good since you can always add salt). Which led to the salt and pepper dish (see pic), in which to get a pinch.
