I often stay at the Holiday Inn where a great Asian restaurant used to grace the 6th floor, but has been closed for several years, so was very glad to see a replacement. I recently had an early dinner, sitting at my usual window table. No liquor license yet, but I was offered a complimentary glass of wine. Nice touch. My appetizer was a Peruvian staple-a Causa (seasoned mashed potatoes) & this came with crab meat. Was very good. A delicious house salad followed, & then I had the Pescado a lo Macho, which was lightly fried red snapper topped with mussels, calamari, & shrimp in a delicious sauce with rice. The place was nice and big, the service--mediocre. We were a group of 6. The food was terrible. We waited almost an hour, and they brought the plates one by one. We ordered ceviche, chaufa, ají de gallina, lomo saltado, chicharrón de pescado, and lamb chops. The potatoes were undercooked and cold, papá a la huancaina had no flavor at all. I had to send the Lamb chops back to cook as they came medium rare. They came back almost the same. Aji de gallina had the chicken in chunks. While it had its moments, tonight was probably my worst dining experience, ever. But first some background. Our neighborhood has a program called Dine-Around where we have 3-4 neighbor couples who have a meal out together once per quarter. I was the captain for one of the groups this month which means I chose the restaurant. A few months ago, shortly after the opening, my wife and I had a pleasant, if not perfect, evening at Taverna Berrocal in Ocala, and we chose it for our dine-around group, attracted by the Peruvian and Italian content of the menu. Oh dear, I wrote a much more detailed review, but it won't fit in the space allowed by Yelp, so I'll go right to the summary: I must admit, I felt like we were in a screening for an episode of Robert Irvine's Restaurant Impossible. There are issues. But to summarize: * Atmosphere - Do not plan on this being what attracts you here. Seating was mostly comfortable (although the seat that wifey and I used was a curved bunch and just a little awkward). The continued Asian Fusion look could use an update. The large Hispanic Heritage group that was separated, but sharing the dining room, and their guitarist, made speaking difficult. * Beverages - Do not plan on this being what brings you here either. No alcohol aside from less than delicious wine. In fairness, wine is a disproportionately important part of the meal for me. I suggest bringing your own. * Service - The hostess service was poor. She left before making sure we had adequate seating, menu, utensils, and an assigned waiter. Waiter service was terribly slow because our waiter appeared to be the key person handling the Hispanic Heritage crowd. The time from order to eating was enormously long. Overall, dinner took 2.5 hours - a half an hour was our responsibility. The rest wasn't. * Food - The Peruvian dishes that we ordered were great (Ceviche, Causa, and Chaufa). The other items (Rib Eye and Napoleon II), not so much. This along with the timing might suggest a kitchen problem. * Pricing - I did not think the pricing was bad - a $$$ out of $$$$$ level for the meals. And the not too tasty wine was free. Will we be back? I do not think so. Our view is that they have regressed, rather than progressed since our visit right after the opening. My husband and I tried this place at the recommendation of my client. We started with the Chica Morada for drinks-which is a non-alcoholic beverage made from purple corn apparently and some fruit at the bottom. It was very refreshing and reminiscent of a sangria sans alcohol. For appetizers we ordered the Octopus and the Causa-both were stellar, but the octopus was the standout for sure! All the dipping sauces were a nice touch, too. And lastly for entrees we both ordered the Seafood Saltado, which was very flavorful and tasted kind of Asian-inspired. It was pretty quiet the whole time we were there, which was surprising for such a wonderful restaurant. Server was attentive and helpful navigating the menu. This is the second time we have been there. Food the first time was fair and the second time was better but we were in a large group. 3 of the people out of 15 did not like their food at all, everyone else did. I had heard great things about this new restaurant and have been meaning to try it for a while. It's a cute, tastefully decorated restaurant at the end of a small strip mall. We were seated efficiently and the staff was very attentive. I was so impressed with the level of personal service provided at this restaurant. When I asked the waitress what she recommends, the chef himself actually came out to talk to us and give us his recommendations. That was so nice of him! We ended up ordering the fish ceviche ($22 MP), tallarin verde churrasco, and the lomo saltado. OMG. The fish ceviche was the best thing my husband and I had eaten in a very long time, best ceviche ever. We got the spicy version and the flavor was so fresh and exciting. We each could have eaten a bowl by ourselves. The 2 entrees were both excellent, the meats were cooked perfectly. We also got a glass of red wine and a Peruvian beer, which both went very well with our food. We came back on consecutive weeks afterwards and had the following Chicha morada: tastes like a less sweet cranberry juice Emoliente: somewhat sweet drink, a little viscous in texture Pilsen and Cusquena - both were good, slight preference for Cusquena Pulpo al olivo - best octopus dish I've ever had. Even my husband who doesn't normally like octopus loved this dish. The octopus was just the perfect combo of crispy and still chewy. So, our party of 11 decided to accept the email offer to dine on Tuesday 7/15/25 during their "soft opening" period. I made the reservation by phone with Jonathan and we arrived on time to a large, nice private room near the rear of the new location @ The Holiday Inn. We were greeted at the podium by Jonathan (there are 2) and by waiter Jose after about 5 minutes. We ordered drinks which took some time to arrive and had questions about the menu which weren't all answered. Had some apps and drinks and ordered dinner. Well, dinner came out in spurts with one dish (a salad) arriving after everyone else was over half thru with their meal. The check took quite some time to arrive after we requested it. Unfortunately, Jose brought out one check for the enter table which then had to be separated into 6 checks. That was an ordeal as Jose couldn't quite remember who ordered what. He did the same when our meals arrived. So, 20 minutes later we paid and departed. The food was very good but the service is definitely in " soft opening" mode and needs to improve. Service was basically non existent as we were served drinks and the waitress didn't check up on us or refill glasses for 45 minutes (which is how long it took to get our food) with only 6 other people in the restaurant. We had our Team Christmas dinner here and it was an amazing experience! First, when I called for a reservation, they were accommodating and immediately told me they had space for us. The table was ready on time and we were greeted by our server as soon as we sat down. Several of us had the Chicha Morada which was sweet and delicious. We had the Grilled Octopus Anticuchero which was perfectly cooked and the Causa limeña for appetizers. Our dishes were varied and each person raved about how tasty they were. I had the Lolo Saltado and the filet was melt in your mouth tender. Nice, crispy fries. Very flavorful. Tonight my friend and I ate at Taverna Berrocal for the first time. What a wonderful little restaurant. Food and service were both wonderful. It started out with a dish of something like very elegant and delicious corn nut type things on the table. Then they brought out a couple pieces of simple crostini. We split a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. I had the Pescado a lo Macho, it was a mixture of seafood and all of it was cooked perfectly. The sauce of the dish was perfectly AMAZING. It was served with rice. Very good flavor and I enjoyed every bite. My friend had Aji de Gallina, a chicken dish that had a different but equally delicious sauce. She too ate every bite....and she never eats her whole meal. Such a cozy, quaint little place. I don't know why but for some reason all of the parking in front was full. This gave the illusion the restaurant was packed. It was not. If I had not made a reservation previously I would have driven right by. Please find a spot to park and go on in. Decided to try this place. I've had Peruvian food before but was disappointed by not only the food but the prices and portions. I tried the seafood dish and was delighted with the lack of freshness of the squid and the mussels as well as the small overcooked amount of fish. Also ordered the fish and chips as an appetizer. Dismal amount of fish and fries. More on presentation not in quantity and quality. Plus, never paid $23 for fish and chips in my lifetime. We are new to the area and were ecstatic to find an authentic Peruvian restaurant. Very welcoming, pleasant, and clean atmosphere. Started off with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. Followed by cancha and a delicious garlic bread. We of course ordered the Ceviche. It was very refreshing with a great kick of rocoto. For our dinner we had the Lomo Saltado & Tallarine Verde and Churrasco both great options. We finished off with a tasty and moist tiramisu. What a great place. Being that they are new you can tell they really appreciate customers coming in. They had three customers already seated, when we walked in. The place is nice and small and gives you a warm family feeling. The food was great and unique to any other place in town. My wife has some odd allergies to certain preservatives and because all of their food is made from scratch she had no issues or reactions eating everything they brought. This place is so good I honestly hate giving them a review as I don't want anyone to know this gem exists. However I believe places like this should be rewarded for the quality food, environment, and service they provide, as now a days they are becoming more and more rare. read more
