"At least all my favorites","so far" the beef udon I enjoyed was sublime, the broth which makes the soup was perfect, and the tender beef with fat still attached "which means enhanced flavor and tenderness" was unlike any I have enjoyed in hundreds of Udon bowls statewide. Ten Gu Ramen By no means am I a connoisseur of ramen, I have yet to venture out into the Los Angeles area from which I've heard has some mouthwatering ramen places. I do however know what I like or love when it comes to food, I know what makes me happy to eat but today I tried to fulfill my craving of Tantamen ramen with Ten Gu Ramen who just opened weeks ago. If you have not heard of Tantamen, find out where to get it and thank me if you see me. Ten Gu Ramen resides in the Gosford Village shopping center next to Jamba Juice, PizzaRev and Chii's, we heard a ramen spot was opening up in this area so when we saw it up and running we were quite anxious to give them a go. This place is not huge, I would say they can accommodate up to 30 persons just by the view of their table and chairs setup. As you walk in (only one doors opens) you have a fountain immediately to your left, which is why only one door works. On the walls you have some paintings and pictures, some which illustrate their food but also Asian characters. The place is clean but should be as they just opened a few weeks ago. Each table has a small spinning carousel that holds chili oil, soy sauce (not Kikkoman), chopsticks and napkins, altogether it is a very excellent setup. As I've mentioned in other ramen reviews I've written, I grew up eating ramen but just Top Ramen, Cup O' Noodles and Maruchan. As someone who adores those packaged ramens, we would try and spruce them up by adding egg, green onions and other things that seemed like it would work. I wasn't the only one raised like that, my wife and two sons were too, we love ramen. When we made the decision to come here, we were starving and joyful. I will list what we ordered and offer opinions of mine, my wife and sons but you should always try things for yourself. -Spicy Pork Ramen (Myself): Since I'm an avid lover of another ramen spots spicy ramen I figured the one here would fill my craving, not entirely but satisfy it. All the ramen places I've been to put a whole soft boiled egg that is marinated but Ten Gu Ramen gives you half of an egg, this is the star at times but here was more of something to add for texture. The pork portion is ground pork but oddly enough reminded me of ground beef when I would eat Hamburger Helper as a child, that is bad. They also have peanuts which when I ordered it thought the saltiness which be complimentary to the spiciness but I was wrong as the peanuts had no salt and again was there for texture. It also has green onions, bamboo and bean sprouts, all normal for a ramen dish and the picture made it every enticing, the real thing however was bland, I had to douse it with some soy sauce to bring flavor into the equation. -Eel Rice Bowl: I've ordered this elsewhere and love the dish, here at Ten Gu Ramen it had great flavor, the eel should have been grilled a bit more. The rice was great but that is expected for an Asian restaurant to me, maybe I take that for granted. This was not a bad dish but small for the price. My wife and kids also ordered the Scallop Ramen, Spicy Miso Ramen, Chashu Ramen, Spam Musubi (app), Takoyaki (app) and Deep Fried Squid Leg (app). All of the ramens had the same issue, a very bland broth. The spam musubi is standard, but uniquely small compare to places like Remix and Maui Pho for the price. The Deep Fried Squid Leg was fried well but again a small amount for the price. Lastly, any time I visit a sushi or ramen place I always order a Sapporo and they serve it with a chilled glass. Ten Gu Ramen provides a small glass that seemed chilled but got warm very quick, then the Saporro is not as cold as most places would serve. AND, notice I capitalized that word, if you order soda, you will received a 12 ounce can with a glass of ice and it costs $1.98. To me that price is like murder, a sin, but then again, you don't have to buy it.... Out of all the ramen places here in Bakersfield I've tried, Ten Gu Ramen is only better than two. From what the waiter stated, they are a chain out of Los Angeles, so I'm hoping the recipes were watered down in transition at the least. read more

Walking into Ten Gu Ramen, you get the sense that it could have been scooped up from an upscale Osaka neighborhood and dropped here into Bakersfield. The decor is colorful and festive which matches the best menu I may have ever seen in a restaurant. Instead of a list of items to order, it presents full-page, clear, and large pictures of all the food items available, with English and Japanese titles beside each. The selection isn't tremendously robust, but it covers a lot of the options you'd expect to find in a Japanese ramen shop, with a few traditional surprises such as takoyaki (fried octopus), gyudon (beef rice bowl), and gesokaraage (deep fried squid tentacles). I ordered the Spicy Pork Ramen which arrived within about 10 minutes. The noodles needed a little more time in the broth to finish cooking, but otherwise the broth was flavorful and the meal was delicious. I unashamedly finished every drop. We also ordered the fried rice (chahan) which included pork, egg, and green onion. It was some of the tastiest Japanese fried rice I've had outside of Japan. The fried chicken (karaage) was also tasty, not overly greasy, and served with a large lemon wedge and a dollop of mayonnaise. It's hard to do karaage wrong, honestly. I had a can of Calpico to drink and we ordered the Sesame Balls for dessert. I love desserts that mix textures, flavors, and temperatures so the warm sesame balls with the slightly crispy exterior and warm, soft interior contrasted well with the ice cream. Though I wasn't a big fan of the green tea ice cream, whose subtle flavor was subsumed under everything else. A pretty good dessert overall, though I'll probably go elsewhere to feed my post-meal sweet tooth next time. The service was friendly and attentive and the prices were reasonable. The music consisted of old Japanese pop hits and cheesy American songs that became popular overseas. No joke, they played "We Are the World." The restaurant itself is fairly small, but comfortable. The only real negative was the sound of construction coming from the next unit over behind our table, but that's undoubtedly a temporary situation. We'll definitely return to this little gem of a restaurant to try out some of their other ramen dishes and traditional side items. A great addition to Bakersfield. read more

We visited Ten Gu Ramen while driving from LA to SF. We ordered Tonkasu ramen, corn and cabbage salad, seaweed salad, unagi rice and fried chicken. The Tonkasu ramen have complex flavors without being too oily or salty. It does not have the depth of some ramen broth but relatively light. On a hot summer day, this was much appreciated! The char shui was tender and noodles have the right bite. The corn and cabbage salad is very refreshing with sesame based dressing. Just a simple mix of fresh cabbage topped with sweet corn. It is a dish I intend to recreate at home! The seaweed salads uses red seaweed, instead of the more common green ones. The fresh greens and soy dressing are done lightly to let the red seaweed shine. Fried chicken was crispy and hot. Unagi pieces were ample for a small bowl of rice and I like that the sauce is not cloyingly sweet. Total bill before tip was less than $40. A total steal! read more

I've been here twice so far, I like that they are the only ramen place in town that actually offers kimchi. I personally think kimchi is kind of a given with ramen bowl's, so it's nice to see at least one place that carries it. They serve the bowls with sides in separate dishes and the sides are served cold, which i thought was strange. Kimchi I know is served cold, but the eggs and extra meat for example should NOT be served cold. I'm used to all the sides to be put INSIDE the bowl. The reason for this is because the bowls come out hot but after you add all your sides the bowl is lukewarm, which I did not like. Another thing I found rather bizarre is the fact that you only get half an egg. Really? I've never been to a ramen place that serves a half instead of a full egg. Can't be that much more to just include the other half, only reason I can think of doing that is trying to save money. I really wish Japanese places served beer besides beer from Japan, most people these days enjoy craft beer w at least one IPA option, not sure people love Japanese beer that much to have it as the only option. Besides that I can say that the service is stellar, they pay close attention to its patrons and are right there to see to anything you might need. read more

Absolutely amazing time here! My friend and I were looking for a Ramen place and this was the closest thing by; and it was absolutely delicious! The service was also wonderful. Constantly made sure we had what we wanted, needed, and were ok. We had the regular Tengu Tonkotsu Ramen and it was so flavorful. The noodles were thick and the broth was so good, the meat was soft as well. We also had the Shrimp Fried Rice. I came in with friends on a Thursday night. We were seated quickly since it wasn't busy. I ordered the Tonkatsu Ramen, two friends ordered Chicken Ramen, and another friend ordered Spicy Miso Ramen. The two chicken ramen orders had ramen noodles that I recognized, but my tonkatsu ramen and my friend's spicy miso ramen had different noodles. Maybe rice noodles? Overall, the broth was ok for the tonkatsu ramen. I don't think I would order it again just because I'm not that big of a fan of ginger in my ramen, or maybe I'll request no ginger. The dumplings were good but need to fry a little longer. My spicy miso ramen was good but could have used a lot more noodles. The chicken in my daughters ramen was very tasteless no flavor at all. The restaurant is nice inside and the staff friendly and helpful. The dumplings were good as was the fried rice, but the ramen was not very good. The best ramen I've had is in Los Angeles at Ebae's near USC. The closest I have found in Bakersfield is Kamisama which is quite good. Kamisama (on Calloway) isn't as nice inside as Ten Gu but the service is good and the ramen is great, especially if you add the hot garlic sauce (with the seeds in it). I will continue my quest for better ramen than Kamisama but Ten Gu isn't it. read more

Came here the other night, when it's cold outside the body craves some nice hot ramen with flavorful broth. Our order was the fried rice, Spicy Chicken Ramen and the Chashu, the fried rice was greasy which made the taste terrible. I went in yesterday, and I really enjoyed the experience- good service and food. My one gripe would be that they should allow for substitutions for things that one does not want. I asked about possibly receiving bean sprouts instead of the bamboo because I did not want the bamboo that is included, and they said no, that it is included and that I would have to pay extra for the bean sprouts. That is pretty ridiculous and I ended up paying extra for the sprouts and throwing away the bamboo that I didn't even want. Pointless. I did like that they had lemon (which Kamisama did not) and that they had napkins, sauces, etc within arm's reach at each table. I dislike having to ask for the basics at restaurants. We have been here a handful of times now and will continue to come back. It's clean, customer service is friendly, and they have been very attentive all times.
