Came here for a dinner date with a friend. I was disappointed they did not have a dinner bento box on the menu. We got vegetable gyoza which was ok, nothing spectacular. Also, I had the chicken teriyaki dinner which came with miso soup and rice. I asked for brown rice yet got white instead. The meat was dry and tasted like it was day or two old reheated meat. Love their lunch menu! I come here with my co-workers often because the servers are fast (because it pretty empty during lunch). My co-workers and I get the same table by the window every time. I've gotten their Beef Negimaki and Unagi. As soon as the Beef Negimaki was placed in front of me, I placed a whole piece and burnt my mouth. Their sesame ginger house salad dressing (bright orange) comes on the side gravy boat dish and I love it! It's just enough sweet and lightness to it. The rolls have little rice on them and a lot of "sushi" inside, I love when they do that. I'm not a fan of rolls that have way too much rice. read more

GREAAT!! had dinner here with a group of friends while visiting NY and this place was perfect!! the service could have been faster to begin with, but quickly we were ordering our 2nd & 3rd rounds of tall hot sake and sapporo and the waitress seemed to keep up. the sweet potato roll w pineapple was deeelish!! also sampled a number of other rolls that were creative and fresh. a bit on the pricier side for sushi, but worth it for a special occasion! atmosphere was fine,,,nothing special. however the bathrooms were pretty huge and nice! i would def recommend this place to locals and tourists alike! read more

I had forgotten this place existed until a work colleague told me about their great lunch special -- any two sushi rolls, your choice of miso soup or salad all for $8.25, including tax, really can't beat that price. The restaurant has ample seating in the dining room and bar area, so dining in is an option, getting the attention of your waiter/waitress on the other hand may not be. If time is of the essence, obviously the same special is available for take-out. The salad is large, with a large side of ginger dressing. The rolls are standard rolls to chose from, I really enjoyed the spicy tuna, the roll wasn't overloaded with rice and were definitely filling. The shrimp cucumber roll was heavy on the cuke though. I live in the area and frequently order-in sushi and sashimi from this place. Their sashimi and sushi are some of the better ones in the nieghborhood, without having to break your wallet. They are pretty generous with their fish. I've eaten-in a couple of times as well. The atmosphere is good but the service can sometimes be absent-minded. Also, when it's crowded, it can be pretty loud at this place, perhaps partly because of the acoustics. They have a pretty good bar, as well. I've had a good lychee martini at this place. read more

This place is yet another on that strip of 2nd avenue in the lower 50's that wins the area its repuation as having nothing really thrilling to offer. To be fair, this isn't some hole in the wall sushi joint like so many in NYC. It's got some really nice selections and the sushi rice is excellent. I had the O Toro and it was outta the park. For what they charge it had better be. They did well on that one so credit where it's due, but we went back the other night and I wasn't so thrilled. Wes, Ev and I went down there and had three rolls: 2 spiders and a Snow roll. The snow roll was pretty good. Nothing to write home about flavor-wise but the fish was incredibly fresh and tasty. The spider rolls were missing something. The crabs were really big, but they didn't salt the panko so they were really seriously bland. Worst spider rolls I've ever had, honestly. Big let down since those are my fav. We'd consiidered staying and ordering a lot more stuff but agreed that it was neither big enough or tasty enough for the price and asked for the check. If decor matters at all after that, it does look very nice. Impressive, even. There's a waterwall in the middle of the place which adds a lot. That's really an excellent touch. The fact that they have flatscreens in this place utterly confuses me, cheapens it and takes away from the experience. I'll second the suggestion that this could be a good place to grab a bite to eat before hitting the town but in a city like New York why settle for this? The quest for the best sushi in midtown east continues. Came here with a friend for dinner and was impressed by the ambiance. Downstairs was very noisy but upstairs was quieter and just as nice looking. The decor is somewhat modern and overall I just really liked it. Food was A-OK but I was hoping for better. I got the mango shrimp roll and sweet potato tempura roll. Both tasted good but the mango shrimp roll fell apart very easily. As someone who already struggles with chopsticks, this was not the easiest roll to eat! 2 drinks, 4 rolls, and 1 tempura appetizer was about $55+tip so not the cheapest but it was a fair amount of food. Glad I tried it but will check out other places in the area before going back. read more

This place is okay. From the outside, it looks like a cozy, authentic Japanese restaurant, but once you step in, you'll realize it's a bit more trendy and sexy. The food here is middle of the line, both price and taste wise. I had the Sukiyaki which was lackluster. It was too salty and it didn't have that traditional soy-meaty broth taste. Their raw fish is pretty good though. I had a few pieces of my friend's sashimi and the fish was certainly fresh. I also ordered the Green River roll which was loaded with fresh fish. It was very innovative for a roll, too (think black olives, avocado oil, cilantro, jalapeno wrapped in greens). This would be a good place for a light dinner date before hitting some bars in the area... Would I come back though? Probably not. read more

I eat here literally, once a week. Enough said? Great atmosphere. Great food. The fish to rice ratio is key, they do not skimp on the fish. They have tons of specialty rolls and options. The Lunch special is great too!$8.50 for 2 rolls, $11.50 for 3 rolls - with soup or salad. I also order take out a lot - which is always just as fresh and quick. If you are in the area, stop in! Best sushi I've had in a long time - reminded me of the outstanding Cafe Japengo in San Diego - large pieces of sushi that are hard to eat in one bite, taste super-fresh, unagi that was cooked to perfection with a subtle yet really tasty sauce - and to top it off, the avocado maki roll had more avocado in it than rice. Sushi rolls have generous fillings, not too much rice and they accommodate for brown rice. Ordered the oyakadon, chicken with brown rice and egg and veg and it was huge and delicious. This place has a great selection of sushi and more on their menu. We had the spicy salmon rolls for an appetizer, which were very tasty. I had one of their Pad Thai dishes and it was very delicious. Most of the meals range from $10-$20. We even got free sake with our meal, since we spent over $30. The service and atmosphere were also great. We will definitely be back. read more

I absolutely love Tenzan. I eat more sushi than anyone I know and I'm extremely picky about it. Tenzan is my go-to and has never let me down. The fish is fresh, the prices are right, the staff is spectacular (especially Helen!) and the atmosphere is always pleasant. I hate when sushi chefs put too much rice on rolls, so I always ask for light rice, and Tenzan makes it perfectly! They also know I love ginger, so the wait staff always brings me extra ginger without having to ask. If I could eat at Tenzan every day, I would! I highly recommend it! read more

This is another great spot i found just from ordering off mealpal. They make a dish with breaded chicken rice and miso soup.. REALLY good and filling you will not be hungry afterwards. Friends wanted to go out for sushi, and Tebzan is right around the corner(s) from both our places, so that's where we went on a not so hectic (we thought) Tuesday evening. If you want good sushi, this place actually has it. Everything was fresh and very tasty. Some a little bit creative, but nothing spectacular. All, in all, decent value. BUT ... if you want good sushi in a pleasant place to eat, there have to be far better choices. This place is so LOUD as to belong in the "sports bar" category on the final night of the Superbowl! Four people at the table and we could not hear each other to carry on a simple conversation! It's also DARK! I spilled a half bottle of saki because i could not see that my friend's cup was full until it runnethed over! And that was before any of us had had a single drink! Naruto rolls - all are massive and delicious! and they make me feel so healthy even if you are a fatty and order all of them... After order was 50+ minutes late, they delivered the wrong appetizer, not all of what I ordered, and partial of some of the items. When I called to see if they would make it right- they wouldn't. So hear me clearly- they knew they made a mistake, and wouldn't make it right. So after almost $60 of sushi, I had about 4 pieces that were correct, what I ordered, and not soggy after being so late. I ordered a spicy scallop hand roll, and it didn't have the spicy sauce. Really! I guess because I am from out of town and they were bringing it to my hotel room, they thought they could short change me. Clearly from some of the other reviews- people do have good experiences at the restaurant, and get a fair value. My experience was anything but that. I called GrubHub, and they verified that what I ordered was correct, and that the restaurant had not delivered or fulfilled on what I paid for. With all of the amazing sushi restaurants in NYC, pick one that takes care of it's people, and is honest. Vote with your dollars and this type of customer commitment can't fly. read more

I really love coming here since there's not too many good sushi lunch specials in the area. Many of the ones I've tried have unpleasant staff or low quality rolls. At Tenzan, the fish is always fresh and they stuff a lot of it into the rolls. In terms of pricing, it's two rolls for $10 and three for $13, which is about average - but for what you get, it's a great value. I LOVE the peanut avocado roll. They've got comfy 2-person booths too! My only complaint is that they're usually quite slow to bring the check at the end of the meal during lunch, which can be an issue since I only have a one hour lunch break ;) read more

The ingredients were fresh, the place looked modern and nice, but the water fountain covering the wall was pretty noisy and service was slow. The prices are typical NYC prices and delivery is pretty quick. We ordered from work and tried various sushi and shashimi choices as well as shrimp tempura and noone complained, overall success for about 7 people is a win. read more

The fact that Tenzan is in midtown says a lot about its popularity. My date and I came to this restaurant at around 8:30 PM and although it was not jammed packed, most tables were full. We ordered 3 rolls each which were pretty good. I would not say that this is the best sushi restaurant that I have eaten at, but it is definitely A-OK to try. read more

Blah, this place is bad. I'm just rounding up because well.. I'm just one person's opinion. I think Tenzan is a chain or maybe a franchise, came here on a Friday around 8 because it's near my gf's apt and this is one of her favorite sushi places. Think I've seen others around the city but this one is especially more uppity? Anyway, while the decor is a bit fancier than normal Tenzans...the food is really sub par. My girlfriend and I shared the pork gyoza (which honestly was the best thing there- juicy, crispy.. no complaints here), and the rock shrimp tempura which came with a weird curry cream sauce. Why curry I don't know because the flavors didn't go together. And the shrimp was overly fried so it was greasy and crispy and not light at all. My girlfriend had the miso soup and Dallas Roll (one of their specialty but not one of the craziest ones - it was plump and big (all their rolls are oversize). I'd imagine her miso soup was fine- it'd be real sad to screw that up. I had the salmon skin salad which was actually plentiful and tasty with lots of shredded crispy salmon skin but again, not hard to mess up. I also had the tuna takaki which was the biggest letdown of all.. the fish was NOT fresh; it tasted so fishy and not seared properly.. it had a strong metallic taste too.. ugh it was gross I'm not sure why I even ate it all. The fish was not fresh. Luckily I had some decent hot green tea to wash it all down. The service was prompt and all, but I wouldn't come back and wouldn't recommend. read more

I've been here a couple times and ordered them for delivery and I have to say that each time I've eaten Tenzan, I feel like their fish isn't really as fresh as I like. I realize this isn't a five-star place, but I've eaten their tuna several times and thought that it tasted overly fishy. It's a nice place for a casual bite, but I wouldn't highly recommend their sushi. I'll warn that I've also never been a fan of spicy tuna due to the overly soft texture and I feel like a lot of their specialty rolls use spicy tuna or spicy something else. The service is good though and they are attentive. The sushi is cheap and in the summer, it's a nice spot to sit outside and enjoy the weather. All in all, I think it's average. And sometimes below average due to the less than fresh fish experiences I've had here. read more

Went here last night for a nice Sunday night dinner catching up with a friend and we had a great experience. Even though there were not a lot of people there, the service was great and we got served really fast. We literally ordered, and our appetizers came out a minute later, no joke. All the food we ordered tasted great and the restaurant itself is really nice inside. I was mostly impressed by the bathrooms, however. Its something that is really important to me! I drink water like a camel, so bathrooms are a big part of the restaurant experience for me! They were so nice, and spacious LOL! I haven't been to the location closer to my apartment on the upper west side on Columbus and 73rd, but I will definitely give it a try since I had such a great experience at the Midtown East location. I know finding great sushi in NY isnt hard to come by, but for a diner who eats mainly the Japanese options vs the actual sushi itself, it was a great place to go! read more
