For the neighborhood, Tenzan actually offers a decent menu. The quality of the food is certainly better than some of the other typical non-Japanese Japanese restaurants. The sushi is of a *slightly* higher caliber, staff are friendly enough and the food comes out rather quick. This place is more than suitable for an after work in Midtown meal. With an amazingly large water feature, it could offer some decent atmosphere. Unfortunately it seems like they no longer run it and it's just a two-story pit now. read more

I usually come here with co-workers for lunch, and this is our go to sushi bar. Two reason why: 1) Great lunch menu deals: The highlight on the menu for me is the 2 roll or 3 roll special for around $9 or $12 respectively. The rolls your choose from are pretty extensive, and not limited which I find is a plus! This deal comes with a choice of a soup or salad. 2) Fast service: The staff here are effeicient & straight to the point which could seem a bit rude at times (probably due to the lunch rush), but I like them! I usually get the sushi lunch deal either the 2 or 3 rolls, but they also have a other items on the lunch menu. They have a variety of bento boxes, which I will try next time! Enjoy! read more

I hit up Tenzan on a Friday to pick up via Meal Pal. Unrelated but I may have been wearing a dapper "caz friday" turtleneck; service was on fleek and I immediately got my food and was out, awarded a hefty paper bag (stapled shut) for my efforts. Per the golden rule of Meal Pal Yelp Reviews, I analyzed it from a high level - (Quality and Portion Size.) The volume of food was legit AF, there was even soup which I was too full to eat. Lots of pieces of chicken and rice on rice on rice. +1 for actually putting more than two itsy bitsy pieces of chicken like the Meal Pal costumers are on Cold War Rations. The Chicken was very dry though, I needed to basically coat the chicken in soy sauce for it to have more flavor. There is definitely room for improvement here in terms of seasoning just loading it up with some FLAVAH FLAVE. Tenzan won't knock your socks off - but it's solid in terms of portion sizing and the vibes in there seemed pretty laid back too. Food was mediocre. I ordered tofu and vegetable teriyaki and my friend had chicken teriyaki. The food was bland as was the sauce. We did enjoy the drinks. While the food did come out quickly, it was hard to get the attention of the waiter, and no one came by to check on us. I was trying to get someone's attention for quite a while when we were ready for second drinks and for our check. My friend asked for her leftovers to go, and they wrapped it up but neglected to seal the container, and the sauce got all over her underwear. Not a terrible meal, but not great either. This is so far my favorite sushi restaurant in the area. The roll lunch specials are very well priced and the rolls come generously stuffed with very fresh fish and fresh ingredients. Freshly tasting eel with a good flavor is a challenge for me to find, but this place has one of the best eel rolls I've had. The combo lunches are inexpensive with a good amount of food; my fave combo comes with salmon teriyaki, shumai, pork dumplings, veggies, rice, and a California roll for under $13. I was surprised at the decently sized piece of salmon I received, and it was delicious! Also, their miso soup is absolutely delicious. The staff is pleasant, and the service is quick. They have renovated since the other reviews/pictures were posted, as the restaurant now is well-kept with clean and modern decor and furniture. read more

Tenzan is my favorite spot for sushi! Stoped by with a friend and we dined it their outside area on the sidewalk. All of the tables were clean and the waitstaff wore masks. They did a great job of making sure tables were distanced and everyone felt comfortable. Staff were all very nice and helpful as usual! To eat, we had the vegetable dumplings that were served with a delicious dipping sauce. I had the yellow roll and a spicy tuna roll which were great tasting and super fresh! Okay in a pinch. Very average. Was a good place ten years ago. Then they got shut by the board of health at that time. They reopened under new management.Started going back after that and the quality went down with low grade provisions like fake crabmeat and genetically modified foods. This place is just great...for people who don't actually know anything about sushi/sashimi. I just ordered the sashimi deluxe take-out and am pretty horrified by the quality and the cuts of the fish. There is literally nothing good about biting through a piece of raw fish that is 3/4 of an inch thick (I took out a ruler and measured it because I was so horrified). The tuna sashimi is incredibly mushy (my chopstick was able to easily poke a hole though it with minimal pressure), a clear sign of being kept in the freezer much too long without proper care to remove excess moisture. All the pieces were completely lacking in taste. I have now thrown out about half the order. If you're looking for pure quality sushi/sashimi, this is NOT the place for it. If what you really enjoy is some Americanized version of Japanese food with out-sized rolls/sushi/sashimi pieces for "value," please continue to frequent this place. Frankly though, Yama 49, down the street, offers better in the latter category. read more

My client recommended- he eats here weekly and my BFF brought me here as he works in the area. - fresh/good food always - attentive/friendly staff - was given lunch special after hours when my job pushed my break to 330- so nice!! - last visit i witnessed the owner/manager/guy who is always at the door treat the LATE delivery guy with respect and quietly offer him a free drink to take because it was so hot out. Hosted my rehearsal dinner here on Fri, Sept 2nd and it was a pleasure from start to finish. I booked the entire 2nd floor with one of the managers, Eddy. He was so great to work with! They were flexible and agreed to worth within our budget, especially on a busy Friday evening during the summer. My 33 guests enjoyed a 2 course meal and everyone raved about the food. My husband and I chose this place because we order from here at least every other week, but to hear our amazing friends and family gush about their meals just made everything that much better. Do not order from here. I've been a long time customer, but I won't ever eat here again after how I was treated. I ordered delivery and my side salad had mold on it and my udon had egg shell in it. I called to let them know and they sent me another salad and udon, but because I threw out the udon noodles and only returned the salad with mold, the restaurant accused me of lying about the udon noodles. I told them I'm not going through my garbage to give them back half eaten noodles and they hung up on me. See the attached pictures for evidence of the moldy salad and egg shell. This is our go-to for sushi takeout. Consistent, fresh. Great combinations. The appetizers and tempura are good too.

While Tenzan has a nice looking kitchen menu, I can only judge the sushi, since that is what both my boyfriend and I enjoyed when eating here. I found the ambiance to be slightly clinical looking with light colored tiles on the floor and walls. I did like that the space seemed open. There are some nice details, like a waterfall on one wall, that added to the "zen-like" feel. I ordered the Sushi dinner with a white tuna roll, rather than a regular tuna roll, which they were happy to oblige for a $1 charge. My boyfriend ordered the Maki A combination. I thought that the fish was all of very good quality. Everything was obviously fresh, with no hint of fishy flavor. My sushi pieces definitely almost melted in my mouth. For $14.50, I had the maki combo: yellowtail (hamachi), salmon (sake) and tuna (maguro). Very generous amounts of fish, I love it. The set also came with miso soup which was ok. I didn't explore the drink menu here because I was previously at an Irish bar before dinner, and didn't want to drink more alcohol, if not, it would cloud my judgment on food and affect my reviews on yelp. read more

My fiancee took me here for my birthday last night, and I loved it. The rolls were huge with relatively very little rice, and the fish was very fresh. Service was prompt and really friendly. My favorites were the Chilean sea bass roll with caramelized onions, and the spicy girl roll, which I can't describe properly but was magically delicious. Also, the prices were very reasonable. Our new favorite neighborhood go to sushi spot! While enduring yet another snowy winter day, my boyfriend and I decided to give Tenzan a try. To our happy surprise, it was great! For one, the decor is nicer than your average sushi joint.. it's inviting, warm (vital during nyc winters) and they had tvs (vital to my bf during the NBA season). The restaurant is kind of split in half, with one side containing the bar and TVs, and the other just for dining. The sushi is pretty good and comes fairly quick (great for hangry people). We favor the oyster roll, snowing roll (ha), shrimp tempura roll (so unoriginal, I KNOW), and their basic rolls such as spicy salmon, etc. I love their sushi because of their rice to fish ratio! I hate rolls that have too much rice and not enough fish and this place has the perfect amount! For dessert, the fried cheesecake is pretty good and comes with 2 pieces. Surprising because every other place only serves one so it's a pretty good deal in my book. The prices are very reasonable and the staff is very friendly (always a plus)! The decor is modern but cold. The price was kinda expensive, and their idea of sashimi was nigiri with no rice. Um ok. this Tenzan is my favorite location, there's lots of space, I never have to wait for seating and i LOVE the bay berry (love luv looove) that comes on the side of the seared salmon appetizer. I've grown especially fond of the chilean sea bass, buttery and has salt and pepper for seasoning. When my sweet tooth is in swing, I like the peanunt cucumber roll and the sweet potato roll is nice too with a little tang of pineapple in there to keep it real... sweet. For me, sushi was definitely an "acquired taste." I'm very particular about seafood, and for the most part, I avoid it unless I'm confident in the person who's preparing it. To this day, I still think I'm the only Jew who doesn't take lox on her bagel and cream cheese. When I told Teddi that it was her turn to pick the restaurant, I was hoping that she wouldn't say "sushi." Sure enough, she mentioned that Tenzan had recently opened in her neighborhood and served, you guessed it, sushi. "It's light and healthy and just sounds good," she said. After a hefty three-hour French class, I was starving and reluctantly gave in to her restaurant choice. I did tell her it was her turn, after all. Imagining I'd walk in to a dark 20'x20' room lined with linoleum floors and a dirty, overstocked fish tank, I found myself in the most zen-like atmosphere. Taking center stage in the restaurant was a floor to ceiling waterfall that made the most tranquil sounds. The space itself was large and finished with the latest in modern interior decor. Since Teddi had eaten at Tenzan prior to our date, she noted that the lunch specials were the way to go. We each ordered the two-roll combo that came with miso soup or salad. I opted for the salad, a spicy tuna roll and a shrimp with mango roll. Instead of beginning my afternoon with a glass of plum wine, I ordered a cup of hot tea that was both nutty and spicy. I was pleased to find that iceberg lettuce did not take center stage as the main component of my salad. The robust, meatier mixed greens actually enhanced the flavor of the ginger dressing. Both of the rolls were excellent and exquisitely fresh, however, the spicy tuna stole my heart. The ratio of fish to rice was precise and the temperature of both rolls was perfect; not cold, but not warm. The shrimp with mango was a lovely combination, but I felt that the bland shrimp was overpowered by the zesty ripe mango. When the check arrived, I was shocked to find that our entire meal set us back a mere $18! For $9 each, Teddi and I had a fantastic meal, great service and left the restaurant with full bellies. So take it from me, any of you sushi-unaficionados, Tenzan will change your mind on the infamous roll forever. read more

2.5- I couldn't decide between a 2 or 3 so 2.5 it is. We ordered delivery at work. The food arrived quickly, which was great but the food did not meet my expectations. I got a Philadelphia roll and a shrimp mango roll. I thought those would be 2 safe bets. I love sushi so for me to not want to finish my meal is a big deal. The salmon tasted like it was smoked and for some reason was just hard to chew and swallow. I thought the mango shrimp roll would have a little more flavor but it was pretty bland. Maybe if they added a sauce over top it would be better. Also the sushi didn't have enough rice on the outside. It was spotty and you could see the seaweed. The rice was more like spotted around the roll. I would not order there again. I will stick to my favorite spot in Brooklyn- sushi gallery. read more
