Been going to Teru for about 30 years now. It has gone through some average times to great times, but my last two visits has revealed an excellent Teru. Many of the people working there have been there for many years and the latest slick menu is providing some fabulous tasty surprises. The fish is excellent and the service outstanding. From food to service to the freshness of the food served and ambiance.... everything was great. I've been here on multiple occasions and it has always been consistent with service and food. I decided to go here for my birthday dinner. We had a huge group... close to 20 people. We called them on the evening of which was so last minute but they still managed to accommodate a reservation for us. I couldn't believe it. They gave us the end private room. We had the sweetest servers. Asa and Arash were both so accommodating and kind. As you can imagine, it is never easy dealing with a large party like ours, but they did it and they did it so well, smiling and full of love. They made my night. OK, so I've never been a sushi guy. More of a meat & potatoes person. I went here at the request of my wife and a very good friend. Walked in and was impressed with the outdoor dining area. After we were seated, owner Arash came over to say hi and I explained that I know nothing about sushi. He asked me a few questions and told me "don't worry." I'm Not a huge a huge raw fish eater so I stick to the Rock shrimp and Yaki udon but my wife cannot get enough of the Sexy roll. The Shapiro peppers are great also. Went in late, 30 min before closing. They served us delicious sushi with a smile and never tried to rush us out. In fact they said we could take our time. It was cool, but no one likes to stay too long after work, so we scooted out. I love this place. If you don't have reservations, don't sweat it. The line is never long and even if they say 30-40 mins or so, you'll definitely get seated earlier. The vibe is cool. Let me start by saying I am..err was SUCH a fan of this place, and to still be fair think the quality of their fish is extremely good. However, as some have mentioned on here already the service we experienced this past Sunday when we came was infuriating to say the least and at the end of the day I think restaurant owners need to know just how important SERVICE is! Everything was going great until we ordered our last item for the evening- 5 Eel Hand Rolls. After waiting 25 MINUTES we asked our waitress what was up, she replied with a rude "THE SUSHI BAR IS VERY BUSY YOU KNOW!" Hmm ok...we waited a few more minutes and our handrolls came. If you eat sushi often (and my family sure does) you know that a handroll has been sitting out for some time if the Nori is soggy and not crispy. So honestly, no the sushi bar wasn't busy you just forgot to bring us the order ...about TWENTY minutes earlier. Then the bill... we waited 15 minutes to get the check...we were splitting it 3 ways (a $350 bill) and being that i'm an accountant i wrote, very clearly on the back of the check how we wanted it split up. I gave it to the waiter and explained that there is a breakdown on the back. What do they do? Take 30 ADDITIONAL minutes to run the cards, and come back with an even 3 way split. 45 minutes of dealing with the bill and it was ran wrong. By this point i was totally upset i asked to talk to the owner and to my disappointment after explaining this to him, he thought the best resolution would be to offer me a 20% discount off THE NEXT TIME I come in. Really? Not even an offer to cancel and re-run the cards correctly? So instead of wanting to fix my current bad experience, so that I freely want to come back next time and chalk this up to just a "off night" you want to MAKE me come back again and spend more money and hope that MAYBE next time will be better? I am extremely upset ...almost a $400 tab, have been coming here for years, and now I honestly don't think i'll be back. Very disappointed. read more

Another great restaurant in Studio City. The special "All In" roll (Salmon, tuna, albacore, crab, avocado, garlic flakes and vinaigrette $18.00) is packed with a ton of flavor and texture and they have interesting house sauces available in case you want to add even more flavor to your meal. The garlic edamame is delicious and the "Lemon Roll" ($18.00) made with spicy tuna is very refreshing. Saki was also good. Although the restaurant can get very loud and is usually packed with diners, the staff is very attentive and friendly. The sushi is also prepared quickly. Pricier than most places but also livelier. I am really bummed that this place suffers in its consistency. The first time I went here, we thought the fish was so excellent and fresh. We went on a Friday night around 7:30pm. But when we went last night (a Friday) around 6pm, the fish was spongy and gross. It was as if they were trying to get rid of all their old fish. And in case you're wondering if we only ordered from the happy hour menu: no, we ordered from both. Unfortunately, we won't be back. Last night our order arrived over 50 mins later than the time provided. When we called to ask where our food was 25 mins after the stated time, the front desk girl was extremely rude. Our food wasn't even prepared yet, stated they were very busy and that they have contacted grubhub several times in the past regarding the quoted delivery times because they are always behind and too busy for their take out deliveries. One of the rolls we received you could tell was incomplete, falling apart and was super fishy (color, taste and smell). Extremely disappointed with the service all around. Our delivery experience was way different than our dining in experience. My goodness is the fish here fresh, high quality, and reasonably priced! Louis is excellent (he'll brag that he's from Guadalajara, Japan) and the spicy tuna rice cakes are the best I've ever had. Teru Sushi's yellowtail and salmon sushi are ALWAYS excellent, and the seared toro is to die for! My husband and I don't eat rolls, though we see a lot of them going out and they all look great, but we do love a good hand roll and the baked crab and spicy scallop can't be beat!!! read more

2016 YELP 100 CHALLENGE - 013/100 Came here on a whim the other night with my coworker after we got our nails done across the street. We were feeling sushi and Teru was the closest place nearby, so we ended up trying it out! I was impressed by the super cute pond/fountain in the front, and the place was a lot nicer than I was expecting. Definitely not one of your hole-in-the-wall, super cheap sushi joints. There was also much more seating that I was expecting, and we were seated at a booth towards the back of the restaurant. The waitresses were good, but a little pushy? It took me a little while to peruse the menu, and I felt like she kept coming back every 2 minutes asking if we were ready to order. Also, I didn't really like the menus... They didn't give a thorough explanation of what was inside each of the rolls, which was why it took me such a long time to order because I had no clue what I was ordering. Eventually I just told the waitress I want a roll with ___, ___ and ___, and they whipped something up for me. Still not entirely sure what I ended up getting, but I guess they made it work? lol. The rolls were in the medium price range, around $10 each. When I got my food, I thought it was decent, but not the best I've ever had. Also a little overpriced as I've had better for cheaper at other places on Ventura Blvd. Overall, loved the ambiance and super cute decor/building, but I wasn't that impressed or blown away. Teru Sushi was delightful! I struggled to get here from West LA sitting in traffic to make their happy hour. My friend who got there around 6pm called me to tell me happy hour ended at 6:30. And I asked her to order what ever she felt like. She decided on the OMG Roll, Sexy Roll, and a delicious hand roll in soy paper (I wish I remembered the name). They even threw in a free bottle of hot sake for checking in on Yelp! Yaaahhhsss! Everything was delicious and very reasonable at $5/roll. Since I'm a big eater, I had to order more. I tried their salmon skin roll and dragon roll. Dragon roll is good anywhere. But the salmon skin roll was a bit of a disappointment. It looked like a sad small california roll with salmon skin crumbs sprinkled inside. I would pass on that. Overall, this place is solid! read more

Expensive, but good. Waiter Chris was awesome, we gave him such a hard time and were so obnoxious - he totally just rolled with it. (And rolled out with a $30 tip) We were all drinking (heavily) and he made it a point to leave a big ass flask of water on the table when he brought the check :) That's f'kn adorable. Sushi was reeeallly good - Customized a roll for me: Spicy tuna with avocado & cucumber. It was fabulous. I regret to say that the unagi was a bit more fishy then I've ever had it... bums me out. I like it's chicken-esque quality, I like it because it DOESN'T taste like fish. Another thing that I was really impressed with was the Albacore Garlic Jalapeno menu item - this is my absolute favourite. It's hard to find, and it's usually called plain and simply, Albacore Special. This was right on the menu though and called exactly what it was. BUT it was $20 :( Another thing was the presence of wasabi - the chef put a lot of it in between the fish and the rice patty. I don't really prefer wasabi on most things, so this kind of threw me off when I was trying to enjoy my salmon sushi. The service was ultra fast and the ambiance was really cool. I was claustrophobic at first, in the corner, the tables all really close. But the energy in the place calmed my ass and I very much enjoyed myself. Ask for Chris! read more

3 1/2 stars My friend suggested we eat here since he's been here a few times, and it was pretty close to his house. It was a bit late so luckily there was no line. Parking is valet. The inside is pretty spacious. Cozy and casual, it has a very welcome feel to it. The price has many varieties. Sushi, sashimi, special rolls, hot menu, combo etc... I usually don't like to get rolls but for some reason I was craving only rolls. _Baked Crab handroll. I was surprised at how much crab they give! I'm not complaining at all, but wow was I pleased. Nice big pieces of warm crab, good amount of rice, a slice of avocado and wrapped in soy paper. I must say this was my favorite throughout the night. Filling and tasty I could eat 2 of these! _Yellowtail Sashimi ($14.25) Comes in 5 pieces. I love yellowtail, and glad to say the yellowtail sashimi was very fresh. The color was such a pretty pinkish/white color. Next to it was a piece of sesame leaf that I took a piece of and wrapped in the yellowtail. It tastes a bit more earthy, and brings out the flavor more. Plus if you do eat a fishy one, this helps to cut that out. _Uni Sushi. This was good, but I wish they added more uni on top. For the price you pay, they don't add much. It was fresh and pretty sweet, but had a small fishy aftertaste towards the end of the bite. I've had better, but it was still good. _Jumbo Scallop sushi. At first I ordered wrong, I asked for scallop sushi but came out small and chopped in wrapped in nori when I meant the jumbo, which is a giant scallop on top of rice. The scallop was fresh and I like the salt they add on top. Same with this it was good, but I've had better elsewhere. _Teru Roll ($13.75) Shrimp tempura, tuna, salmon, crab meat and avocado in soy paper. This was my friend and I favorite out of the other two rolls. I liked that it was wrapped in soy paper. They are pretty huge in size. Comes in 5 big pieces. All the fish components were great together, without being overly fishy or too heavy. The shrimp tempura gave great texture since all the fish mixed together were soft. I like that it came with no sauce, so you cant taste the roll without being overpowered by sauce, as this sushi on it's own already has a lot going on. _Sexy Roll ($18) Shrimp tempura, crab meat, albacore & avocado topped with Spicy Teru Sesame Cream Sauce. I was not a huge fan of this. First bite was good but damn it became so heavy to eat. It was drenched in sesame cream sauce, which tasted like a lot of mayo was added. It took away from the roll, and we could not even taste the fish or even what was in the roll, all I could taste was the sauce. And this is why I'm not a huge fan of rolls, I don't know why they always have the need to drench the rolls. _Da Bomb ($18) Spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, cucumber wrapped in soypaper; topped with albacore, avocado and a pinch of spicy crab and drizzled with house ponzu sauce. This was just okay as well. It seemed most of the rolls all had shrimp tempura in it. This was a bit bland and lacked in flavor. Tasted just like the roll above, without all the sauce. I did like the albacore and avocado on top but felt the tiny dollop of crab did not do much. Although that part was good they should have added more, or if that small of an amount added more flavor. _Chocolate lave cake w/vanilla ice cream. This was good, but not near the best I've had. Pretty simple, no gooey chocolate sauce in the middle that oozes out. I wish they added vanilla bean ice cream on top instead of those cheap yellow looking vanilla ice cream, that taste so artificial. I thought the food was pretty pricey for the quality. I would come back for that baked crab handroll and yellowtail sashimi! read more

Teru Sushi, a San Fernando Valley raw fish institution for over 30 years offers perhaps the worst sushi in Los Angeles. Before sushi spots outnumbered Starbucks and were mandatorily built within 50 feet of one another, Teru reigned supreme as the go-to date-night spot for aquarium fare. Time has definitely passed this place by and, like the stale underwater creatures they serve, this fish has gone belly up. Unlike the hip and fresh Katsuya's of the world, Teru doesn't try to get creative with unique catches of the day prepared simply. (To not even have kampachi on hand should demand a quality control department shut down.) Instead, Teru steers eaters toward rolls that incorporate far too many ingredients to mask the day-old quality of the fish. First off, any sushi specialist that insists on using cream cheese in any offering should be forced to walk some kind of palate plank. Teri uses the Jewish schmear in a handful of rolls that turn the stomach on description alone. The "Twilight Roll" features mealy krabmeat, tuna, salmon, avocado and a smelt egg wrapped in cucumber with sesame cream cheese. If Teru was a designer, he'd be all about mixing browns and blues. If you don't like sushi and demand the flavor of the fish be covered with childish distractions, then this Chuck-E-Sushi is your place. Forgoing the cream cheese-heavy rolls, the others aren't much better, suffering from a distinct more-is-less philosophy. The "Temptation Roll" tempts one to guzzle sake to drown the flavor of stale scallops, greasy jalapeno tempura and bland tuna on soy paper. The "Slow Your Roll" mixes spicy tuna and krabmeat in soy paper topped with crispy Funions that prove a mush of fishy flavor with not one distinct presence swimming to the surface. The service is indifferent (20 minutes to get sake?) and the lack of attention to detail is deplorable (our bill arrived with a digit-challenged sales tax of $40.91 when it should have been $4.91.) You've seen the wood-carved Teru Sushi sign on Ventura just east of Laurel for many years. As the phrase goes, "How long have you been driving by?" Yeah....keep driving. There must be 5 billion sushi places on ventura blvd in the SF Valley, but Teru is worth at least one visit. The California Rolls seemed to melt in my mouth and the taste lingers for a long while. I forgot what else I ate because I was drinking saki (spelling?) shots and sapuro all night. The back patio is awesome and its lodged against a hill, with a nice array of greenery/trees/bushes/flowers almost right against the tables. Rubber chicken? Really cool atmosphere of the sushi restaurant, but the problem is... I asked for white meat chicken, they brought black rubbery chicken teriyaki... Okay... I guess they either forgot or ignored my comment about the white chicken teriyaki pieces in my combo plate. Waitress came back and said, "No... you didn't mention the white meat." So I told her, "Can I please have white chicken teriyaki?" (my friends shake their heads in disappointment, knowing I did comment about that). She takes my plate and came back with the same black chicken piece I bit into, just reorganized. I'm like "can I talk to your manager." The manager comes and he's this middle eastern guy. I told him my situation and he said, "We don't have white meat." I'm like "okay... well why couldn't she have said that to me in the first place?" He goes, "I'm not sure she knows English very well." My friends spoke out instead of me and said... "she knows very well"... right there we just got our things and left. Very disappointed with the food and service. BAD SERVICE and BAD RUBBER CHICKEN! Lots of great things at Teru! They have some of the most creative rolls here, and their fish is fresh. My favorite part about Teru, however, is one of the waitresses named Emily. She is so much fun to have around, and she always makes you and your group feel at home. She is tentative, fast, and sweet!
