This was extremely disappointing. The rice was dry, hard and cold. Most of the fish also tasted dry and flavorless, unless it was doused in a sauce that completely overpowered any flavor of fish that may have been there. With sushi nigiri averaging $7 and special rolls around $18, you would expect the food to be good quality, as they are charging as if it is, but instead they just churn out mediocre food at best, I've had better sushi from a supermarket. read more

This place was great!! We came in for happy hour (outside only) and we had a lovely experience. We sat in the front but they had even more seating in the back. The back seating is gorgeous, it looks like a garden. We ordered the omg roll, the sexy roll, spicy tuna, spicy tuna on rice cakes, vegetable tempura, shashito peppers, and a few other rolls and out bill came out just barely over $50. Everything was DELICIOUS! I would recommend the omg roll! It was incredible flavorful. We also got two Kirin beers for $1.50 each and used the yelp coupon for one free sake. I am by no means a sushi snob, but when sushi leaves a bad feeling in your stomach after wards its worth making a fuss over it. I finally just left the bathroom after eating at Teru.... I think a total of 6 times of puking should have covered it, but it just kept coming out. Sushi chefs here are definitely nice, but sitting at the sushi bar you see what goes down and it ain't so pretty. Slop some fish meat and guts here, slice there and to top it off every time they finished a plate they took the order receipt and plopped it right on top of the sushi itself. Uhh Not cool... I think I saw the receipt ink seep into the flesh of albacore sashimi. There were some moments of ... oh ok, this sushi isn't so bad, but after the swallow it was all down hill. I wanted to leave so bad, but my friend ran into his friends who are in the band The Donnas and started chatting away with them forever. I'm surprised that they were there too. Sushi is good, but if you go when it's busy, you will wait at least 30 minutes if not longer for your sushi rolls. It's extremely slow. First time i went there was a piece of rubber in my sushi, 2nd time we waited for 30 minutes for the food. Wouldn't go back again. read more

The sushi is definitely good, but the service sucks. I live in the area and will call for take out. I always get put on hold for 15 minutes. I'll hang up after 5 and call back thinking they forgot about putting me on hold and nope, they put me on hold. And you just hear the hostesses chatting in the background. If you call any Chinese food place no matter how busy they are they do not put you on hold for longer than 2 minutes. Teru lost my business. There are over 5 sushi spots on Ventura within a mile and all just as good. Better because of the service. 0 stars for the hostesses 4 stars for the sushi * This has happened several times. This place is really great if you want to splurge on sushi. Their spicy tuna is delicious, and I've had it there a few different ways. The first time I had it was in the 9-11 roll, which is spicy tuna upon spicy tuna with hot sauce and crunch. It was delicious! The second thing I had there was the heart attack, and it was great and spicy too. Then again, anything wrapped in a jalapeno would be spicy. The only thing that makes it hard to go to this place often is the price. Its about $18-$20 per roll. I enjoy sushi, and i appreciate fresh fish and quality of the product, but for this price, it's hard to enjoy the meal without thinking how badly it will hit your wallet. read more

Teru Sushi used to be my go-to place about 5 years ago. I stopped coming here about 2 years ago when the quality just started lacking. I came here simply for the pure fact that they had a reservation available at that moment. When I walked in I was surprised to see that they were packed. I had become accustomed to them being empty every time I came. The sushi is alright. You get what you pay for here. The portions are pretty big though so that's really nice. I really liked their yelp offer for a small hot sake with check-in. That's really nice, but I don't see how that's tempting for people who don't drink -- luckily I do. They have valet parking but if its busy then it might take 10 minutes to get your car back. read more

Teru sushi (and tama sushi) is across the street from where i live so i decided to try Teru tonight, as the parking lot is always packed and it symbolizes the start of Sushi Row. Not terribly impressed - but the quality of the fish was ok. Why in the world is there a grill and stove so close to the sushi bar? It just felt strange sitting at the bar, and feeling the heat of the flames as they're grilling beef wrapped asparagus (is that... sushi?) The whole sushi bar just seemed, cluttered. The cuts were a bit sloppy but good size... All in all, if i'm going to get drunk at a sushi bar, i'd probably come here. Seating is super crammed in here, but that never stopped me from revisiting this spot in the past. However, the food is not as great as it used to be and it's super overpriced for the quality and ambiance :(! Sad. What a disappointment. Sad. This place used to be a great place. Not anymore. Also my review isn't from "one bad night", we tried twice a couple of months apart. Here's the really bad news. Their prices can be as much as $4.50 more on one menu than another. We were handed menus and both my husband and mine were different on what I guess would be their most popular items. The issue is that the last time we were there, the check has higher prices than the menu. My husband always checks the bill, remembers prices and called over the manager. Sure enough, we were given a $25 credit for another time. Saturday was the "other time" maybe 3 months later and nope, it's the same issue- and not on only one item! It's just my personal opinion but I wonder if the management is this sloppy (giving them the benefit of doubt that the crazy pricing is not intentional) than does he inspect the fish? I don't know, but with the numerous other Japanese restaurants in the area, I don't need this place! Also, when a screaming child is disturbing guests all around their table and the "manager" is friends or friendly with the parents and doesn't say one word about how at least 5 tables were commenting on their uncontrolled children, and he doesn't care a hoot, that's just another reason to not return! I'm sorry to say that Teru Sushi has fallen out of favor with me. Especially the past two times that we have gone there. You know those towelettes they give you to wipe your hands? Well my hands have smelled "mildewy". Has anyone else noticed this? I've been on a desperate search to find quality sushi in the valley. When I lived in Burbank, I'd either go to Octopus (expensive but yummy) or Kabuki (killer happy hour). So far in the Studio City/Sherman Oaks area it's been hit or miss; Teru Sushi falls somewhere between there. I had the seaweed salad to start and at 7 plus dollars, the portion size matched the price. Next on to the Tuna Tartar. We replaced the crab meat it's typically topped with salmon instead and Nuuuumm! So good! Our waitress, Tricia, was very accommodating when it came to the sub-out and we didn't get charged extra, like some places like to do. I forgot what the other two rolls my date ate since I was all up in the soft, fishy goodness of the tartar, but it looked like there was a whole lotta rice and not enough fish going on there. While I can go without the pretentiousness of Teru Sushi's next door neighbor, Katsuya, I did feel over done in a dress and wedges, so for date night, might wanna spend the extra buckeroos if your lady looks super hot. The decor and booth seating was a little run down and I wish that someone would have given us the option to sit outside.Tricia's service is what would make me wanna go back, otherwise I'm ok with continuing my search for some satisfying sushi. read more

I had to get out of the house one night and I was craving sushi so I decided to try something new. I found this place and man it was delicious! I believe I was sat at the sushi bar (which was a new experience) and it was cool because I watched the chef make them. I'm beyond picky when it comes to raw fish and my sushi was excellent. I got a rainbow roll which was made perfect then I got salmon sushi sashimi was nice and cool in temperature, fresh and delicious. I asked for a bowl of rice and salmon sushi but there was a slight language barrier but overall I was satisfied! Also just a side note, parking is a little difficult. You can either valet your car or find street parking. Street parking isn't too difficult if you try. If you're in the area and are looking for sushi then I'd recommend coming here! Cheers! read more

I have been coming here for over 20 years and today was the worst! They didn't honor ur reservation, then they seated a group of 6 who came in after us. Then, when I questioned, they said that their credit card system is down and they could only accept cash. So basically, all the customers had to pay cash, who carries cash nowadays? Ridiculous. So many sushi places here in Studio City, you'd think they would try to raise the bar to keep business with all the competition around. Although, it was still busy here for a Saturday night, so I guess they don't care. Sugarfish is still by far the best, and I'm on the hunt for places that have a more diverse menu that I can go to dinner with my non-loving-sushi husband. So- I tried Teru Sushi. I walked up the hostess stand a few minutes before my reservation and before even saying anything, the hostess looks at me and says "there will be a long wait" then pause, (knowing me I probably had a shocked look on my face) because don't you normally greet someone first? Like I don't know, hello or welcome? Anyway, insert long boring story where the hostess was flat out rude and didn't have my reservation, but said she would seat me anyway (as if she was doing me a favor) even though I showed her my confirmation email from Open Table. Sadly, it didn't get better from there. Unimpressed with the sushi presentations, the fish was very thinly cut into globs of rice. My husband ordered the chicken teriyaki which he did like. And we had a delay in our beer order because it wasn't cold yet. And when the cold bottle of beer came out, they handed us two hot out of the dishwasher glasses to pour the beer into. Been going to Teru and being served the absolute best sushi in the Valley by Richard and the crew for years. Not only do they never forget a face, but I don't think there is a single person there who doesn't want to be there, employee or patron. My faves are the albacore sashimi w/ jalapeño and garlic, and the jalapeño hamachi. My girl likes the baked crab cut rolls and the cucumber/cream cheese California rolls that Richard makes special for her. They have our drinks poured before we even sit down, and they are always happy to see us. The best! read more

We are sad that the quality of this place has gone done dramatically. We have been long time customers and have been coming here for 20 years. The sushi and sashimi was high quality along with the service. Last night we were there for dinner and not only did the portions shrink, the quality was barely better than that of a rotating sushi bar but at triple the price. We also noticed that a bunch of sushi chefs have left and wondered if anyone knows where they might have gone or opened a new restaurant? It will bring something short of a miracle to bring us back. This place is really hit or miss. We used to come here all the time. The sushi was decent and priced right. The place is huge and has a cute balcony area with a small water feature. We've never had an issue with the service. We were there last week with a big group and the food was great. They weren't prepared to handle such a large group. The shishito peppers came after we finished all our food. They forgot a few items we ordered and had to be reminded several times to bring drinks, water, tea for every person at our table. My biggest issue has been with the food quality on other occasions. While last week the food was great, we have been traumatized from really bad quality fish from this place in the past. It was bad enough that it prevented us from returning for years. The only reason we came last week was because our friends chose the location. We were blown away by the cool décor, the fantastically attentive and helpful wait staff! The feast was so delicious, we couldn't stop eating! The "Sexy" roll with tempura is NOT to be missed! Teru Sushi excels in creative rolls with names that are at times PG-13 rated if not downright scandalous. I can only imagine explaining to your kids why the rolls you've just ordered are called Geisha's Lips, OMG, and Happy Ending. Maybe I have an overactive imagination, but one does wonder what they were thinking when they were naming these rolls... If you prefer classic sushi experiences that really do focus on nigiri or sashimi, I might suggest looking elsewhere because there are better options. First off, this place doesn't really have much business having "Sushi" in their name. Almost their entire menu is cooked, though from the quality of the raw fish they do have, you're better off that way. I tried Teru because it had great reviews. The whole restaurant is a long skinny alley of a place, and the waiters glared at me for being in their way while I was being seated. It was pretty empty, but service was still slow and I'm pretty sure they'd forgotten about us a few times. When the waitress brought food, she clunked it down on the table like she was really mad about something. Don't take your anger out on my food! I tried a handful of different things that were pretending to be sushi. Pretty much everything was sub par. It's pretty hard to mess up spicy tuna, but I'd rank theirs at least one step lower than the stuff you get in supermarket sushi. On top of that, their prices are in the average to high range for casual rolls. Which would be ok if the quality backed it up, but it doesn't. The only saving grace of the place was their baked crab roll was really good. I mean, painfully overpriced, but really good. It's a shame that I can't justify returning here for that really good, expensive crab roll. But, I really can't. This is LA. The sushi rice was Ok and warm but there was a white-man's portion of it under the fish. The torO was white/yellow/brownish (kinda looked like hamachi.) Food was average tasting and overpriced... I'm here right now... With a very large group of people and we've been waiting to pay our bill for an hour... The waitress did not help at all. Honestly, go to The Sushi House down the street. The sushi is way cheaper and much better. And I've gotten much better service there than here. First and last time I come to this restaurant. This is ridiculous. UPDATE: If you scroll down you'll see that they replied to this review. I was kind of excited because I thought maybe they would acknowledge their fault and try to mend things with me. A simple I'm sorry! Or at least come back and we'll treat you right would've been a good answer. Instead they blamed it on someone from my party which is just ridiculous. This is not how you handle business! I asked the waitress if I could pay for the things me and my girlfriend had because I needed to go, early in the dinning stage and she said she couldn't. She had to have all 20 people on the table on the same tab. It's 2015! How do you not have a modern system of splitting checks? Or at least a waitress who is willing to put some extra work for their tip? Trust me we all wanted to leave by the time the check initially came (it took quite a while).
