I did not read up much about this companies origins but it sure as hell did not start in Texas or even in a steakhouse. Maybe someone trying to recapture a trip to Texas they took 20 years ago for a week and sharing that awwwthentic Texas taste with the world. Another strike against good food in Northern Monmouth Co.
Visit #1- few weeks after their grand opening. We went for lunch and there was a decent crowd, no wait (yay) Every team member seemed to have some sort of script to tell customers. Going on and on about their bread and famous sides and steaks, etc etc. I guess it creates a friendly atmosphere, good on them, whatever. The fresh baked rolls follow you to your table which I thought was nice, they are sweet rolls lightly buttered served with cinnamon butter which was surprisingly delightful. Servers seemed enthusiastic and sincere (as it turns out, that's the only good thing going for this place, the front of house staff) . Country music blaring overhead.
Server takes our drink order and goes over her script. No specials mentioned but I don't think they have em anyway. Quick glance at drink menu, basic Bud Miller Coors and a bunch of fruity stuff that belongs at Fridays. (Voice in my head) "hey, you're at Texas Road House, TEXAS, get a Shiner Bock you daft bastard." (me) I'll take a Shiner Bock,.. server has never heard of it and they don't have it, (me) how about a Lone Star? Nope. So two institutional TX beers not @ the TEXAS Roadhouse, I knew this was a bad idea. I order an Amstel, more Country music.
Menu is big but not overwhelming, center page is their steaks, flanked by chicken, burgers, sandwiches and some seafood. As for the steak, all the cuts you would expect to see but I was going for lighter fare so I ordered the oven roasted chicken, wife got the "BBQ" chicken sandwich. Music gets louder (it was at an obnoxious level to begin with) and all the servers, bus staff, expediters, etc start line dancing. For f9&ks sake, its 2 in the afternoon. The line dancing goes on for a minute, most of the staff don't seem to thrilled with having to do it, I was embarrassed to watch (this seemed to happen every 30 minutes). Everyone then returns to their posts then more Country music.
FOOD! Presentation is cafeteria-esque (its a "steakhouse" I don't expect pretty) half roasted chicken was swimming in a 1/4" of juice that nearly sloshed onto my lap when placed in front of me. The sweet potato I got was loaded with marshmallows and roasted to perfection, apple sauce was from a can. Wife's "BBQ" sandwich looked lifeless and uninspired.
Roasted Chicken: Rubber skin, the exact polar opposite of crispy and miles away from any oven roasted chicken I have ever had. Seasoning was so freaking salty it overpowered anything else they used. Center was nuclear hot, I am pretty sure this came from a microwave. Beyond terrible.
"BBQ" Chicken Sandwich: the sauce was pretty weak, Stubbs has this stuff beat. Not bad but not good, really just a dull sandwich. Also, why is there no BBQ sauce on the tables?! If they are so proud of it, why hide it?
So overall first impression; miles away from anything authentic in terms of atmosphere, tired "Texas-y" decor and no one listens to that much freaking Country, change it up, PLEASE. Food bland, service was good.
VISIT #2- I swore I would never be back but I can't call a place terrible if I only try it once, this time, lets go for some steak! Better yet, the f^9k up free prime rib.
Once again, servers and front of house staff are awesome, inviting and willing to go the extra mile. Music, still Country, but whatever. Apparently though things get extra Texas sized crazy when its your birthday.... they wheel out a saddle, round up some workers, sit the guest on the saddle and scream at everyone to clap, cheer yada yada its embarrassing but its unique, fun if you are with a group of friends half in the bag or 8 years old.
I order a 12oz prime rib, medium rare, it comes out just a tad over well done, server immediately recognizes there is an issue and offers to take it back without me asking (this is the first time in my life I have ever sent food back). Manager brings me back a medium-ish cooked steak and apologizes profusely. I am cool with medium, but what a sad sad cut. It was not 12oz, barely 10 and it was mostly fat. The few good pieces were not bad but were salty, once again the crust was just salt, any herbs used were unrecognizable. There was a slight mesquite tang which was unexpected but actually kind of nice. The roasted sweet potato (sans marshmallows) was awesome and my little one seemed to enjoy her chicken tenders.
In closing, yes I realize that not every restaurant is made to cater to everyone, some people enjoy the song and dance that chains use to be "unique." I just don't get this place and that's fine, there are better places for those who want a good cut of beef in this area. read more
