Not sure why this place doesn't have 5 stars. Their food is excellent! I think because a lot of Long Beach foodies seek out the fancier places, they overlook hidden gems like Thair Original BBQ. I compared two Pad Thai dishes I had, one from the 5-star reviewed restaurant called "Thai District" in downtown, and one from Thai Original BBQ. Hands down Thai Original BBQ wins for the quality of food. Their Pad Thai, Ribs, Pad See Ew are delicious and have a complex flavor. On the other hand, the Pad Thai I had from the Thai District place was not good, very flat in flavor and didn't taste much like pad thai at all. Beyond the food being great, and the portions being generous, the staff at Thai Original BBQ is super friendly and professional. Is the place good for a first date? Maybe not. Maybe a second, more casual date. The place is very casual in the atmosphere but not unappealing. I usually do take out, but I wouldn't mind dining in. read more

I love the food but the service was horrible when I came here with my coworkers! My coworker Romlind and I got here first of the rest of our group and this older Asian woman server sat us down at a corner table. Then left us alone for a good 5 mins. Not even asking us if we wanted something to drink while we wait for the rest of our party? After a few minutes, we finally grabbed her attention so we could make the lunch specials ending at 3 (We got there at 2:45). She didn't even come to us when we got her attention, she just asked from across the room where she was at, "What do you want?" Oh wow, can we order now or should I yell my order to you? The rest of the coworkers came and she began to take our orders. I ordered the L1 which is the lunch special version of the S1 (BBQ chicken and rice) and the chicken was definitely on the dry side. Oh and it also comes with this sweet and sour sauce, which I think really completes the meal and this lady who was already getting on my last nerves spilled my sauce all over my rice on the way to the table. She just said, "Oh, sorry I spilled it" then takes off right away. So here I'm thinking, "It's okay, she went right away to get me a new one". Wrong. 5 minutes later I see her taking orders and serving food? What effing server spills your food then doesn't replace it? Had to flag her down again and literally I asked, "Excuse me, can you get me more of that sweet and sour sauce that you spilled and didn't replace? Thank you". Worst service and food was dissapointing. The one in Chino Hills is waaaaay better and is the one we frequent whenever I'm down at my parents house. Not as great as i was expecting. The pad thai was kinda greasy and the food wasn't as flavorful as other Thai that i've had for less money. Our server and everyone that worked there were Thai, so it was relatively authentic. Since it's called Thai BBQ, perhaps what they do best is chicken and beef dishes and all we had were veggie and shrimp dishes. Even their veggie dishes were cooked in oyster sauce and obviously i can't consider that to be vegetarian and didn't seem to have that much veggies. I've been going here since I was a sophomore in college. I've been to a good amount of Thai restaurants and this is my favorite place to eat Thai food. It's quick, it's delicious, and I somehow always get parking even though the lot is tiny and is shared by a few businesses. I go there at least twice a month and the waitresses know my order before I even say it. I've only ever tried the curry, the pad see ew, and their shrimp dishes; however, I always order the basil shrimp (mild). The sauce in the dish is my favorite; it's *so* good with rice. I always leave my plate pretty clean, with the exception of the chilis. My boyfriend always orders panang curry with chicken since he considers it the best panang he's ever had. The Thai Iced Tea can sometimes be a little too sweet, but it's not bad. read more

I like them for this because they take their time on the phone with you & they repeat the order back to you. (most places rush off the phone like their butt is on fire) Also, they get your food to you quick-style! another place i cant believe i havent reviewed yet. All i really have to say is that if you've never tried thai food, original thai bbq restaurants are a consistently decent introduction into the genre. Of all Original Thai BBQ locations ive ever been (cerritos, carson, fullerton, etc...) this ones my favorite. Yes, its in a "scaaary" strip mall in long beach that sometimes has no parking, but i like it, its right off 7th. Why a favorite? The staff are nice. They're attentive and it doesnt kill them to genuinely smile every now and then. Other locations, especially cerritos, the staff can be pretty damn rude and outrageously inattentive. My favorite items i used to be able to list by number but i have since learned that while a lot of them do, not all thai bbq use the same menu numbers, so i'll just list: -the beef satay. Its the quintessential thai dish (esp. if you're filipino) tender skewers of beef or chicken with cucumber salad and peanut sauce. yummm -the pork ribs. They're always tender, never ever had a bad dish of ribs. also comes with this overpoweringly sweet syrupy sauce. -the fried spring rolls. Always mouth-searing hot, but always simply delicious. Also served with a really sweet syrupy sauce that goes well with the rolls. -the tom yum soup. Its a clear broth soup with carrots, onions, lemongrass, mushrooms and chicken. (theres probably more things but thats what i know) Its simple, light and good. The presentation is nice, it comes in a hot pot with real flames coming out the top, which is a flair akin to that of sizzling fajita plates at mexican restaurants. Also deserving special mention is the bbq chicken, its a rustic slab of chicken and dipping sauce, its ok, but not great. I like the jasmine rice with shrimp that comes with every entree. Its good on its own and well, has whole shrimp on top. They also have a good, standard thai tea and thai ice coffee. All the other stuff is decent, I dont think anything is bad, really, but the above mentioned items are what i believe to be the standout dishes. Decor is minimal, they have a fish tank and chinese zodiac placemats and i think thats as far as they go. So Thai BBQ is a good place for thai food and this one is easy to find and the people are genuinely nicer than other locations. read more

We were looking for a quick place to eat with decent food after a long day. We just moved to LB and have been exploring the various restaurants, so we literally just happened upon this place after driving around for a while and hunger finally getting the better of us. I wasn't too sure about it when we first walked in as its a small place in an old retail strip. It's a little dingy and out dated, but don't let it fool you. The food was great and the portion sizes make it well worth your money. The food here was very sweet overall, which left me not really satisfied but also not wanting to eat more. Taken as individual components, nothing was actually bad except my BBQ combo. The meat was nicely tender, which I appreciated, but the marinade was incredibly sweet, just impossible to square with the fact that this was dinner and not dessert I could only eat half of it. The accompanying 'shrimp fried rice' did not help, and I put it in quotes because it was basically just orange-tinted rice with a few shrimps and curls of egg sitting on top. I appreciated that their crab rangoon had real crab in them, although not much of it. I liked the yellow curry's flavor and deep orange almost pumpkin-soupy color. They must have new owners? I totally agree with Liz R. The pad thai is now a thinner noodle and not oily at all! Nice and fresh and it even held its integrity as it was even delivered. I like it! I also ordered a garlic beef dish and it was great - thinly sliced beef with lots of pepper and garlic sauteed with bok choy. Lots of flavor and very tender. The people that usually take my phone order had a very hard time deciphering what I was saying so I had to speak extra slow when I have never had a problem in the past. Delivery? Yes!, quick and yummy! My friends (who only ever order pizza in) love it when I'm the one deciding on dinner and a movie at my place. They don't even help me choose the menu, because I like to do it family style and they're never disappointed. Pad Thai and crab langoon to start, chicken sate', spicy shrimp, and basil beef. At least 5 other favorites I won't mention here. When eating in, go for the Tom Yum Goong soup, too. Shrimp and mushrooms in a hot n sour soup. Served in a huge stainless bowl with a sterno underneath. Enough for 4 at $7.75. Another place I would have probaby never tried by just driving by, but thanks to buddy Brian F., who is much more adventurous than me. Our food was ready in under 5 minutes, which I think reflects the shoddy ethic behind this local Thai place. I had pork fried rice, and the rice was old, and colored orange. The pork could very well have been any other kind of meat, tasteless and kind of gray. The fried rice consisted of orange rice, gray pork, egg and green onion. That was somewhat remedied when I put a ton of peppers. The lunch portion got me full. My sister ordered the basil chicken which was yummy. The service from the waitress was excellent. I have been to Thai BBQ once and it was okay. Nothing exciting. I tried to order delivery tonight and it was ridiculous. Let me break it down for you. 1. They have two phone numbers. I called the first one and it rang until my phone, smarter than I am, hung up. I called again, same results. I called the second number, someone picked up and said something inaudible and then hung up on me. I called the first number again and finally someone was ready to take my order. 2. I say I want to order for delivery and the woman tells me it's an hour wait and asks if this is okay. I'm tired, already in my PJs so I say sure. It was almost like she was trying to scare me off. 3. I place my order of an appetizer and an entree, bringing my total to about $15. Already pricey if you ask me, but what're you gonna do? I tell her I'd like to pay with my credit card and she says there's a TWENTY DOLLAR MINIMUM. That's RETARDED. And it doesn't make sense to me because when I went the last time and picked up my food at their dingy little restaurant, I paid with a card and it was the exact same order. In summation, this place has shitty business practices and there's better Thai food out there. It's a little far but check out The Thai Place in Cypress (I reviewed that one, too). I have never written a bad review on a restaurant before, so it sincerely saddens me to write this one. I don't plan on returning to this restaurant ever again. I've had two extremely unpleasant experiences with them over the past couple of months on phone order mix ups. The first issue that I had with them was a lunch special pad thai order. I asked a representative over the phone if they allow mix shrimp and chicken on their pad thai opposed to just one meat. The order taker replied over the phone by saying that they could accommodate my request, but didn't mention that it would be any sort of upcharge. When I got to the restaurant, my bill was much higher than usual. Upon inquiring, they mentioned to me that they charged me extra due to my request for shrimp and chicken. I told them that pricing wasn't mentioned and that I did not want to pay for any upcharge. Rather than take the order as is, I told them that I would be fine with just pad thai with chicken to keep the lunch special pricing that I was accustomed to. Who accommodates a request without also discussing an upcharge if there happens to be one? A few months later (which was 5/30/2018), I ordered (3) Pad Thai plates over the phone at 11:00 am. This restaurant has special pricing during lunch hours between 11:00 am - 3:00 pm on selected items (Pad Thai being one of them). When I arrived to the restaurant to pay for my pick up order, the lady at the register (assuming she was the owner) gives me an amount much higher than what it should have been. When I inquired about why the pricing was so high, she looked at me and rudely stated, "You have done this before!" I then told her politely that the last time that we had a mix up order, it was regarding meat and never over lunch hour pricing. She then told me that she had charged me for the standard priced Pad Thai as I didn't specify over the phone that I wanted the "lunch special Pad Thai" (even though my order was clearly at the heart of lunch time). Afterwards, I told her that I was not hear however to give you a hard time and I will give you the non-lunch pricing that you are requesting from me. I did ask her in a polite manner if most people come to her restaurant during the "lunch hour" to get the regular priced Pad Thai item?" She quickly responded by saying "Yes." I thought in my mind, who would come to a budget Pad Thai restaurant to not obtain special lunch pricing during lunch hour? Secondly, why wouldn't an order taker ask over the phone what type of pad thai needed to be ordered. This restaurant will clearly take advantage of people that may not know about their lunch specials as they clearly don't ask or inform those who order about special lunch pricing. The lunch special that I have ordered from them countless times clearly appeared to be the same portion size as the regular Pad Thai that one receives even though she mentioned that the size is bigger. This was also a deception that was unbelievable. I won't be returning back to this restaurant. I clearly felt as if the lady at the register was stereotyping me by saying, "I've done this before." I have worked in the security industry for over 12 years and I prevent dishonest people from taking advantage of homes and businesses. The thought of me unprofessionally being accused of trying to get over on them is disgusting. I had patronized their business multiple times before and after the first phone order mix-up, but won't be returning. There are many other competing Pad Thai areas in this part of Long Beach that I will be taking my business to. read more

I've heard great things about this place, but never got a chance to try it. Finally, sometime last week, I was given the opportunity! At first I thought we stumbled into a fast food joint because it looked like an old Taco Bell that I used to go to back in Washington and had to double check to make sure that I was in the right place. Okay... THAI BBQ... good. Whew! I got up to the counter because I didn't know if I was supposed to seat myself or not and it being so similar to Taco Bell, I thought I was supposed to place my order at the counter. A voice from the back asked, "for here or to go?". "For here, please!" So she told us to have a seat... and we did! The menu would have been better off with pictures, but then again... all menus are better with pictures. There were lunch specials for only $5.95 or something like that. Of course, I went with the Thai Chicken Curry... and it was DELICIOUS! The serving was kind of small, but then again, it was a lunch special and I shouldn't be eating too much anyway. I've dined in their locations in LA and Glendale, but this location is better for take out. Staff is very friendly (Sammy is amazing!) and attentive, but the decor and ambiance leaves little to be desired. Stick with the BBQ chicken and spareribs w/ extra chilli sauce on the side, and you won't be disappointed. Portions are generous and come with shrimp fried rice. Stay away from the tom yum soup. Unlike typical tom yum soups, somehow their broth had a very fishy after taste and very bare basic ingredients. It almost seemed as if they just took old broth, threw in some tom yum flavoring, pre boiled chicken, mushrooms, and called it a day. read more

This is one of my favorite Thai restaurants in Long Beach. They have the best coconut soup. I order mine with tofu instead of chicken and extra mushrooms. Their classic Thai BBQ chicken is delicious. Every time I order it the chicken is tender is succulent. No sauce needed, but the sauce is a bonus. I accompany it with a side of brown rice with a Thai Tea on the side. Too bad they don't offer boba here. Their Pad Thai is okay. I usually order a half sized portion when I'm not in the mood for meat. I'll get veggie or shrimp depending on how I'm feeling. Parking is a breeze. There's a lot right in front of the business. There is plenty of seating and a magnificent fish aquarium in the middle of the restaurant. I wish the seats were a bit comfier, but the food and service are so great that I can deal with a sore bum when I finally leave(lol). There are restrooms to your right in the corner as soon as you walk in. The staff is always friendly and accomodating. They greet you with a smile and welcome you immediately. The only complaint I have is their $10 minimum to use my debit card. I don't want to worry about stopping at the atm if I'm in the neighborhood and craving a Thai Tea.
