So...I've been to this restaurant numerous times, and my food has always been hot and tasty....whether it's dine in or take out! The only problem I've ever had/witnessed has been with the service. Most of the people that work there are incredibly lovely and helpful! But there are a few bad apples. No one has ever been truly rude to me, but they have been a bit short/unpleasant. Which is a bit off putting. That being said......if I went through life basing my decisions on grumpy butts, I'd miss out on a lot of great experiences! AND yummy Thai food!!! This is a small business. They make a good product! If I don't like the waiter/waitress, I'll just remember to order my yummy food 'to go' next time! I've eaten at the restaurant and had food delivered. It was excellent each time. I got pad see ew each time, spicy. It was super flavorful but definitely more spicy with the delivery order. As far as appetizers, definitely dry the yam puffs filled with sweet potatoes and curry powder with a sweet and sour dipping sauce. So I came in about a month ago and ordered my girlfriends and I regular pad Thai and pork fried rice, both spicy. There was a pretty noticeable problem in my rice but when I called the restaurant the manager assured me she would give me a freebee next time. I came in a month later, not only did she honor the freebee, she also threw in some freaking amazing pot stickers with cheese and sweetness? I go here pretty often, but after my experience last night I will no longer go. I ordered pineapple fried rice and it had a freezer burn taste to it. I also ordered Tum yum soup, my very first bite I noticed a hair and i dismissed it thinking maybe it was mine even though my hair was pulled back. Half way through the meal there was ANOTHER hair! I looked and it was short and grey , mine is dark and curly so def not mine. I almost threw up! My husband ordered yellow curry and said it tasted off. Called after sports and ordered food. Showed up within 3 minutes of ordering bc we decided to dine in. Walked to the front and Diana was there. I explained we decided to dine in. She said oh you ordered to go you need to pay to go. I said well can't we sit and she said yes after you pay. She brought our food to go, no waters or sodas....rude as can be! I explained we wanted drinks, food served and to tip our server. She looked at the clock and said oh my manager said to go orders can't be served just given their food. I've ordered here for years. I had eggplant and tofu, my husband got the orange chicken, dad got yellow curry, BIL got the crispy duck, sister got short rib, and mom got pineapple fried rice. I have been ordering the same thing from Thai Elephant for a while now and the last two times, it has been terrible to the point where I can't even eat it. They used to be consistent with the amount in the serving and the amount of different veggies in the curry, but there is no consistency now and it doesn't taste right. I ordered 2 thai teas and a good amount of food the other night. They were so nice and had my straws taped down so I would not lose them on the way to my truck. Those little things are appreciated. Wow, we've enjoyed Thai Elephant for 12 years but our last three visits have been pretty bad. Lately we've entered an atmosphere of screeching wait staff hollering across the entire restaurant and been utterly ignored while trying to get service. Wrong orders, wrong charges, mediocre food and rude staff. Last time we came away convinced that heating a frozen entree from TJ's would make for a more enjoyable evening. Thai is soooo 1985. SLO County had 2 Thai restaurants when I moved here: Thairrific in SLO and Atascadero. That said, I have to say Thai Elephant is pretty damn good. I love the pumpkin curry. Actually, all of the curries here are good. I like that you can get fish in addition to the usual chicken, shrimp, mock duck, pork, etc. And the fish is breaded and fried. So happy to find good Thai food in Atascadero! We ordered a red chicken curry, chicken pad see ew noodle dish and papaya salad. Both the curry and noodles were great, flavors were authentic, good size portions. The papaya salad doesn't have the spice and flavor level we're accustomed too, but I'm sure they're reluctant to prepare a really spicy dish without someone complaining that it's too much to handle. I prefer mine "Lao style." The Thai iced tea is also tasty. The staff is great, friendly, gets busy during lunch hours. We tried a difference Thai place on the same road and this one was definitely better. We will be back to try different dishes for sure. read more

Then a couple min after sitting, she got up from eating just to tell us a server would be with us and gave us menus; then went back to sitting.
