I don't know if the ownership has changed or if they just made some decisions to alter things, but either way it changes our opinion of the place. First and most important for us, they used to be the only place we were aware of in NC to get Gluten Free Crab Cakes which was a major reason we frequented Sammy G's. That has apparently changed and the new Gluten Free menu is basically just the meats menu which is a real shame. It looks like they have made some other small changes to the regular menu as well, none of those were all that concerning but the loss of this GF treat is a real blow for us. If you are a celiac and found reviews about the GF crab cakes, please be aware they appear to be gone now. Additionally, the prices across the menu seem to have gone up by a few dollars. When you consider that Sammy G's was never a cheap place to eat, and given the state of the economy these days, that actually does come out to a noticeable change and makes it harder to justify going. However, with the loss of the old GF options, it's unlikely we'll come back anywhere near as often as we used to.

In general the place was basically clean. The servers were speedy and brought drinks and silverware quickly. Refills came quick and buffet plates were removed swiftly. Four of us got buffet and two ordered from the menu. The menu orders seemed to take a long time. The salad bar was the old fashioned kind with all the old fashioned fixin's. The hot food was plentiful but I can't say that the quality was especially wonderful. It was good but not great. Some things were not salted and others were overly salty. The flounder were especially fishy and flounder is not fishy fish. The dessert was grocery store leftovers. The "cobblers" were goop. And they only had vanilla ice cream in the machine (maybe on purpose). All in all, the experience was lacking. It wasn't awful but I certainly was hoping for better.
