TheMajor disappointment, to say the least. The evening started off good, we were sat down and our waiter Rome came and introduced himself. He was very welcoming and told us he would be back to talk about the menu and tell us about great special they are having. After he disappeared for 20 minutes he returned and we started asking about appetizers. He said they didn't have an appetizer menu but some of the plates were small and could be eaten as appetizers. That's when he upsold us on the tasting menu, he explained that the tasting menu is a 4 course creation of the chef and would be an exclusive dining experience and built it up as a meal we would never be able to experience again all for the "bargain price" of $99 each. Since he really did put the sales charm we decided to trust him and go with the tasting menu, I guess since he sold us that he figured his job was done because we didn't see him much after that. First course was Salmon Crudo, 2 crostini's and a salad that was very similar to a caprice salad but with cream instead of mozzarella. The first course did taste good but very underwhelming, just smaller portions of the regular menu. Nothing special. Second course was a linguini with caviar, the linguini only had a lemon butter and the caviar just to added a bit of salty flavor on top. Pretty bland and underwhelming once again. Third course was the sliced Steak Picanha with a side of baked mushrooms and a side of breakfast style cubed potatoes with sour cream. The steak seasoning was not good, it was seasoned sweet and left much to be desired as the main course. I literally had 1 slice and my wife had 2 slices, we left the rest. The mushrooms were good but not something I would order twice. The breakfast style potatoes were completely flavorless and unseasoned, just baked with sour cream on them. Fourth and final course was desert, by this point I was frustrated and decided to make a comment to my wife in front of the waiter to see if it would get his attention. When the waiter was setting down the desert I said to my wife "dinner has been really disappointing, the best part was the first course and it was raw uncooked food". The waiter had no reaction. The waiter walked away and never acknowledged my comment. So we each had one bite of the Dark Chocolate Desert, it was awful. Did not find it necessary to go for a second bite, come on how can you mess up chocolate desert!! Then Rome finally came back, asked us why we didn't eat the desert and I told him we didn't like it at all. He seemed confused but didn't bother asking how we liked the rest of our food, No one asked us the entire night how our food was or if we liked it. I guess they couldn't be bothered. So we came, we ate, we were served disappointment after disappointment, paid and left feeling ripped off. Not a single employee knew about our disappointing dinner experience because no one cared enough to ask, even after we sent back uneaten food. First person to ask us if we enjoyed our dinner was the gentleman at the Valet booth, I told him about the disappointing evening. The Charles is one of my favorite restaurants in Dallas and this has remained true every time I have visited. They have a cozy atmosphere, a very cute bar, and a hidden private dining room in the back. The staff are always so welcoming and thoughtful. I love so many of their appetizers--the wood fired oysters and unique cheesy foccacia are some of their staples. The charred octopus is also delightful, flavorful, and tender. For pasta, we always get the creste di gallo (used to be served with rock shrimp but now it comes with prawns), and it has such a unique flavor profile. It's very acidic but for some reason it keeps making you want more. For entrees, they often rotate the menu but the berkshire pork and short rib has always been delicious. I had a reservation for two and my friend missed her flight so it was dinner for one. I was seated at the bar, which is beautiful btw. The whole place is gorgeous. Staff were so great, I was chatting with the manager and everyone was so gracious. I should've reviewed the ingredients more to my cocktail but my first cocktail had too much grapefruit (i can't tolerate too much) and so summer made me something similar. The grilled oyster was divine. I also ordered the grilled beets and had the spicy creste di gallo which was a cool shaped pasta. Honestly, the dishes i ordered were too acidic for me. I really enjoyed the olive oil cake with coconut sorbet but i think the white chocolate tiramisu was even better. There's a speakeasy around the corner as well, i'll need to check it out next time. Good not great. The staff were excellent I just might not have gotten the best meal. I ordered the bone in pork chop. I don't know why they sliced the pork because I feel like it dried it out. Good flavor just not as good as I think it could have been. Additionally, I love broccolini but this one the dipped in batter and fried made it taste soggy... not a fan. We went here for dinner on a Wednesday. The place was packed. This place was popular. Our waitress was amazing, one of the most personable we've ever had. She made great recommendations. We got: Octopus: we did not like celery, it did not add anything to the dish but the cook on the octopus was perfect. Very tender. Wagyu ravioli: 5 pieces, 30+ dollars. Always delicious and consistent. We arrived on a random weekday and had a great meal. We did get there quite a bit early so we had to wait for our table as it was holiday season. We actually made the reservation the day of which was a nice surprise! We ended up just staying at our spot at the bar and having dinner there. It's the perfect spot to people watch. They do a great job decorating for the holidays so if that's your thing make sure to check it out! The food and service are always stellar at all the Doro spots and Charles is no exception. Our bartender took great care of us and she even made a few recommendations that were outstanding. My personal favorite was the chargrilled oysters and the beets. Both were super tasty. The pasta is always on point and we enjoyed that as well. I also had a super tasty cocktail! We had a wonderful evening at The Charles! Both the food and service was wonderful. For drinks we had a "Nice & Sloe" and my husband had something with amaretto, for our starter we had the meatballs, for pasta we had the spicy seafood dish and the ricotta dish, and lastly for dessert we had the tiramisu and the olive oil cake. We are both teachers so for us this type of restaurant is a huge splurge so I'm glad that it was well worth it! My favorite dish of the night were the meatballs and I didn't have a least favorite. We have previously been to Sister and I would say that I still prefer Sister over The Charles but I think that has more to do with a menu and a cozier overall vibe, plus I love lower Greenville, than any fault of the restaurant itself. My boyfriend surprised me by taking me to The Charles for my birthday. I tried to avoid seeing where his GPS was taking us too, but accidentally peeked and I was so excited. Ever since trying Sister a couple of years ago, I'd been dying to try The Charles. We valeted and appreciated the attentive service from the start. Not only did the valet staff help me out of the truck, they also held the door to the restaurant open for us. We arrived 10 minutes before our reservation, and instead of us having to stand around to wait, we were escorted to their lounge where we enjoyed a cocktail. It was a dimly lit room with a stunning bar. I don't recall the bartender's name but he was great! It was obvious that he was passionate about providing excellent service and he was so creative with his cocktails. Our reservation was running a bit behind, and the bartender called for a manager. Within a few minutes, a manager named EJ walked us right to our table and sent us the squash blossoms on the house to make up for the delay which was so kind and thoughtful. They were delicious by the way! We were greeted immediately by our server, Jill, and she walked us through the specials and explained how their dining works. She was very attentive and patient with me when I couldn't decide on another cocktail. Everything we ordered was out of this world -- from the tuna carpaccio to the prawn pasta to the lamb chops. And of course, the white chocolate tiramisu was amazing as well! From start to finish, the service, ambiance, and food are all a 10/10 in my book. I have a sneaking suspicion that this place has changed owners since our last visit. The restaurant is stunning & has a fabulous vibe! Let's start with that & a great welcome from Host & hostess. Went to speakeasy to have cocktails. Reordering was very complicated for bar...we got drinks we didn't order as it also took 30 min to receive second round. Normally it is hopping in there & service keeps in time with the amount of people. Saturday night was off, our reservation was super late so we wanted to stay in speakeasy & continue drinking. Kind of fubar from times we've been before. Everyone is super kind but drinks need to be flowing especially on an anniversary. The menu has changed tremendously & I was super disappointed with our choices. I loved the pastas & meat choices from before. This was an incredible experience! It was my girlfriends birthday and I think 4-5 different staff came up and said happy birthday to her which made her feel so special! In addition we got a glass of champagne and a dessert on the house. They truly knew how to make us feel celebrated and valued. Our waiter, Keegan, was excellent and very knowledgable and friendly. I took a friend out to dinner with my wife and my daughter and she recommended we try the Charles. Probably the best recommendation I've ever had in my life. The food was exquisite, and the service was among the best I've ever experienced. The choices on the menu were all spectacular. In fact, so much so that we asked our server, Jill to simply bring out dishes that she recommended. That was probably the best decision I made all night as Jill hit a home run on everything she brought to us. Kudos to Jill and the rest of the staff that made this evening memorable. I ate here for the first time last night and it will not be the last! I was in Dallas from out of town with a friend who ate here once before 6 months prior. When we got there, the Fabulous Fatima recognized her and took our table. She made amazing recommendations on food and cocktails based on her memory. The entire staff went out of their way to make sure everything was perfect! The food is so original and delicious! The service at The Charles is second to none in the DFW metroplex. Then there's the amazing food. I haven't had an enjoyable experience like this in awhile. Visited The Charles for the first time last night and I'm still thinking about the grilled oysters! Upon entering the restaurant, I was immediately greeted by the hostess and escorted to my table. The dining room was FULL and I had no idea where I was going to sit and the next thing I know, we were walking through the kitchen into a beautiful bar area with speak easy vibes and I was in love. We started off with glasses of Chablis and it was PHENOMENAL. At $29 a glass, it was worth e v e r y penny. We started off with the wood fired oysters ($5 a pop) and I could have had 10! They were a very good size and had great flavor. They had a few specials and I went with the brisket falafelle ($26). The meat was plenty and the portion size was perfect. Our server, Christopher, provided immaculate service and kept us laughing until close (no, literally we were the last ones out of the restaurant). The food was touted as "life changing" by our server but not terribly memorable. Very good, but very expensive, and though we were a party of six ordering three dishes per person plus cocktails, wine, and dessert, we left feeling a bit hungry. The manager was less than subtle about wanting us to leave after we paid our [rather hefty] tab. We lingered for several minutes, so he parked himself at the column next to our table, glancing furtively at us. The server recognized this and tried to compensate by walking us into the parking lot. I appreciated her effort. But to be honest, we don't think we'll be returning. I'm guessing they routinely have parties with 4- or 5-figure tabs, so I doubt they'll miss us. That's the distinct feeling we got, anyway. And ultimately, that's reason for this mediocre rating and review. At this price point, it's all about the feeling the guests have when they leave. From entrance to exit this was a 5 star experience. Convenient valet parking. Gracious hosts. Every interaction with every employee was so kind and attentive. The drinks were on point and the blue cheese olives in our martini was the best I've tasted anywhere. The bartender was also able to make me an impressive Vespa. We had a few different dishes and still can't decide on which one was our favorite. I would skip the oysters, I just prefer mine simply dressed and didn't care for the pepperoni. It can get a bit loud in the restaurant, lots of conversations and happy patrons. We didn't mind it all and had a great night. Absolutely amazing experience at The Charles. Came to celebrate a birthday and the entire restaurant staff made sure to congratulate us. They also addressed us by first name and made us feel super welcomed. The ambiance was very cozy and intimate, the slightly dim lighting gave it a private feel. The food was spectacular. Note the portions are intentionally smaller so that you can try more dishes. Our favorite dishes were the wagyu ravioli, soft shell crab pasta & olive oil cake. The way they combined the flavors really highlighted the quality of the food. Again, there are only a few bites so savor them! My wife and I went for our anniversary. I called to make the reservation and spoke with Bridgette who took down our information and asked about our wedding (COVID WEDDING) When we walked in we were greeted and sat immediately. The service and intentionality of the staff here is unmatched. The menu is designed very uniquely as well. We started with Char Grilled Oysters 10/10, then went to the Rock Shrimp Pasta and finished with the Porterhouse Steak which was presented and cooked to perfection. I will just say wow. This restaurant is so amazing in so many ways. We sat in a back section that is separate from the main area and it was cozy and intimate. The main area seemed jumping full of life and definitely put you in the mood. The food was incredible, seriously. I came in with a group of 10. We had an amazing time. My date and I showed up early and were escorted to the speakeasy. Fatima was knowledgeable, attentive and hospitable, as was the rest of the staffs we interacted with. Transitioning to dinner, Food was great, service was exceptional. We had James from So Cal! He was top notch. Josiah was also very accommodating. One critique I have is I personally wasn't a fan of the shared serving style, but nevertheless I appreciate getting to try multiple things and the group seemed to like that aspect. Was visiting Dallas for a weekend and came here with a friend for our first dinner (who just eats one dinner nowadays)? We had a reservation and we were seated immediately at the bar when we checked in. We had a third person on the reservation who unfortunately wound up not being able to make it, but I appreciated that the restaurant was extremely chill about this as we figured this out. Our bartender was awesome -- unfortunately didn't catch her name, but she spent a good amount of time reviewing some of the menu highlights and specials. We got the following: Food: - veal ragu cappeloni: super tasty. Pasta was cooked just right. - robiola tortellini: the contents of the tortellini (sweet corn) and sauce were delicious, but the pasta portion was extremely hard and undercooked. The temperature was also way too cold. It felt like it had been sitting out for a few hours at room temperature. - duck confit: deboned and cooked so it's super tender. The squash purée that came with it was heaven. - chocolate tiramisu: a bit too sweet for my taste. Drinks: -Oro liquido: rum, pineapple, and lime. My friend got this drink. It was just okay for my taste. -Watermelon cocktail: vodka based. This was so good that we ordered multiple rounds. Super refreshing. The food came with some great sauces that we didn't want to waste, so we asked for bread to enjoy every last morsel of sauce with every shred of dignity that we had left. The food was even better! Clay was our server in the speakeasy area. He was so welcoming and knowledgeable and KIND! We recently celebrated a dear friend's 60th birthday at The Charles, and it was hands down one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. Kara, who coordinated the evening for our group of 10, did an absolutely amazing job--everything was seamless and perfect. The set menu was served family-style and featured some truly spectacular dishes. The Charred Octopus was a standout--tender, smoky, and full of flavor. The Rigatoni alla Vodka was rich, creamy, and easily one of the best pasta dishes I've had in a long time. The Dry-Aged Ribeye was cooked to perfection, juicy, and packed with flavor. The Fried Polenta, which I never would have ordered on my own, was a surprising favorite--it was crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and absolutely delicious. We also had the Crispy Potatoes, which were perfectly golden and seasoned, the Lemon Ricotta Gnudi was another dish I would have never ordered on my own but it was soooo good. To top it all off, the Olive Oil Cake for dessert. I know that doesn't sound good, as it didn't sound good to me, but boy oh boy what a delight! A simple but decadent end to the meal. Every single dish was a 10/10. Our server, Jonathan, was the cherry on top of an already amazing evening. He was attentive, knowledgeable, and was very funny. He knew the menu inside and out, anticipated our needs, and made sure we wanted for nothing the entire night. His fun, charismatic personality truly enhanced the experience. The atmosphere at The Charles is chic and upscale, and the cocktails were just as fantastic as the food. It's the kind of place where everything comes together perfectly--the ambiance, the food, the drinks, and the exceptional staff, especially Kara and Jonathan. I wish I could remember the name of the chef that night because he deserves all the recognition in the world. He even came to our table and took a picture with us....His talent is truly a blessing....so sorry chef that I didn't remember your name.
