This lounge has great martinis. I especially like the key lime pie and the dancing bear ones, but I'm sure the other ones are great too. It is a good place to come with a small group. I believe if you want to order appetizers they come from the thai place next door but I usually have been either after work or after dinner so I've never ordered. The Lounge at the Charlesmark is a great place to stop into if you want to grab a quick drink. I was meeting my husband for dinner at L'Espalier; he was coming from work so who knew when he'd make it there. I'm always nervous when I'm the first one to a meeting spot, I don't want to look like a lush or anything! I found that I didn't feel out of place here. The bartender was very nice and even gave everyone at the bar samples of a key lime martini. (It was really good, and if you're going on a hot day I'd imagine it would be quite refreshing) I don't think this is really a destination for a night out (I would go across to City Bar for that) but just for an after work drink or meeting spot it works well. read more

I am a lounge lizard. I heart the Charlesmark. I came here after work tonight with a friend. We grabbed bar seats and soaked up the atmosphere. Cool, icy grey colors. with red accents. Nice relaxing music (Cold Play, David Grey, etc) Wine list is good, chicken satay was delish. They get their bar food from the Thai place next door. What made this place excellent was the service. Our bartender, Jefferson, was top notch. He even gave us some of his daughters Girl Scout cookies. The lounge on the upper lever was crowded, but not annoying, large number of comfy couches and low chairs. Great candle lighting. LOVE the atmosphere, not too crowded and oh so relaxing. Small, delightful European style hotel. We live in NH. Last minute decided to stay over in Boston as we often just come down for the day. Since it was our anniversary, we decided to stay over. They wanted to upgrade us as we checked in because the reservationist actually asked if there was special occasion involved. Nice touch. Always admired this cute place when we walked past it and there were no disappointments! Totally small, but adorable. A candle in the room, lollipops, refrigerator. I came here to meet a friend for drinks one weekend night. The bar was tinier than I expected and full of a collection of random people. As I waited, it was obvious that some skeevy guys were checking me out (poor girl, by herself - she must need saving). Finally, my friend came and she knew the bartender lady so we got some drinks and scored two seats at the bar. Where we were immediately hit on by two older, married men who tried to impress us with their knowledge of champagne but obviously knew nothing. However, we were also bought two shots by several guys closer to our age but when we showed we weren't interested in anything further, moved on to some other girls who were definitely looking for some attention. The whole feel was strange and my friend even commented on how it normally is not like that. However, the drinks were good if a bit pricey and the bar itself looked pretty cool. My roommate and I rolled into the Lenox to grab some Sunday Funday drinks, but City Bar did not open until 4, so we ended up at The Charlesmark, right across the street. Walking through the front doors, the bar is located to the left of the lobby, and it includes a big ass window façade overlooking Boylston St., which affords excellent people watching. The bar was 99% empty on this particular Sunday afternoon, and the sox game was on the TV behind the bar, so that was just fine. The bar is totally going for that urban boutique feel, but a few notes were missing. Music, for example, was not playing. Being in a quiet empty bar is always odd, even if we are talking about a Sunday afternoon. The cocktail list consisted of about 12 different martinis, and a decent wine selection. My roommate and I both tried ordering a Dark and Stormy, but the bartender informed us there was no Ginger Beer. Now, I've been noticing this tasty concoction on lots of drink menus lately, so I asked the bartender to suggest to the manager that it be added to the list. She then informed me that the manager has not/does not change the cocktail list, which is completely strange and backwards. Anyhow, the bartender was friendly, and she shook up some quality drinks. Oh, except for the first martini, that included two floating hairs. NASTY. She ended up not charging us for one drink, but still, c'mon, it's one thing finding a hair in food, but floating in a drink like it's some kind of new age garnish? BOGUS. Someone should tell the bar staff that forcing a $25 credit/debit card minimum on customers is not legal. Regardless, why is that necessary for a bar in Back Bay?? I stayed here a few years ago, back before the Charlesmark had opened its fun, street level lounge. Before the bar opened, there was just a door with a small awning to indicate that a hotel even lived there... which made it an even bigger, pleasant surprise to take the elevator upstairs to the really inviting guestrooms. The Charlesmark bills itself as a "boutique hotel," which often means "small." And it is. But it more than makes up for it with the calm, contemporary decor and well-appointed rooms. The location can't be beat (many rooms with a view of Copley Square!), and for the area it's in, The Charlesmark has relatively reasonable prices. read more

A friend and I stopped by here for a cocktail on July 4th and the patio bar was not too busy. We waited for 15 min for a cocktail menu, then the server disappeared for another 15 min. We placed our order and waited another 20 minutes and had to leave to get to our dinner reservation. I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars here, however my love of their martini's with feta cheese stuffed olives pushes me to give them 4 stars. The bar is very small, but well decorated, it can just feel very cramped on a crowded night, though most of the time its not too packed so this place is a great chill drinks night. I've also attended the monthly wine tastings, which I think you get a lot for your $ at, though those are PACKED. Overall I always recommend Charlesmark for a chill night with great cocktails, just be prepared to spend a little more than average on the drinks. read more

The Charles Mark Hotel is situated in a very convenient part of Back Bay Boston Massachusetts area. Sadly they don't take advantage of that by making their hotel remotely comfortable to stay in. The bed was hard as a rock and a pull out couch was even worse. When asked if they had any mattress toppers, which we know they do because one was actually on the bed... They claim to not know what I was talking about. I must say the staff we dealt with seemed not even remotely happy that we were being guests in their hotel and they were extremely uninformed. After two days of very little sleep I was happy to see the back of that place. Having said that the rooms are tiny but we're fairly well modernized as far as looks go! We had absolutely no view but that was not a big deal to us. Also the Wi-Fi it was next to useless, at least in the room that we were given. I hope if you choose to go there that your experience is much better than ours was. read more

Initial reaction to the room was overwhelmingly good. The rooms, while certainly not large, are not too small so long as it's a short stay; two or three days max in all likelihood. More than two people would also seem claustrophobic and overwhelm the space. It was, however, very well appointed and tasteful, and quite cozy. First complaint is that the bed was a bit too hard, and I like a firm mattress. My girlfriend, however, was less than pleased; and fellas, as we too well know, if she's not happy, you're not happy. Second complaint goes to the television positioning; it was on the top of a very high shelf, which made viewing a movie from their rather huge (if unorganized) free dvd and vhs collection difficult. In-wall and in-shower speakers were a great touch; but they stopped working not long after we checked in. Bathrooms were charming in an attractive dark green tile. The sink, it must be noted, has a joystick-style faucet; I felt like I was playing Super Mario Shaving in the morning. Shower was huge for one...not quite big enough for two, sadly. Our particular shower had some holes in the wall, and the nozzle was cracked, though I am more than certain this is the exception rather than the rule; possibly some rowdier renters had caused some damage and it had not yet been repaired. Service hit both ends of the spectrum. Our night clerk was curt and seemingly self-righteous, thought not outright rude. He was the kind of fellow who would go the extra mile and make sure you knew he was doing so. Other attendants were much friendlier; the woman who answered the phone knew just about everything when trying to get there and was gracious in giving out her advice. And now, the bar. Tasteful, thematic, very clean, although easily crowded: it's a good thing it doesn't get too busy. Bartenders were friendly, but seemed to lack knowledge of their stock and of cocktails. Then again, I suppose my personal standards are far too high, being a very good barman myself; to most others with no such strange requests as mine, I'm sure they're more than satisfactory. The bar also makes it feel somewhat strange checking in; the bottom floor is almost completely given over to the dining and drinking area, with nothing more than a tiny desk for the clerk to sit behind. It's a moderate-sized, very well priced hotel for the area which does a lot of things right. I think most of the issues I had were due to that it is a much smaller, less corporate hotel; fine for character, but many of the little things can go unnoticed in such a business. However, very recommended for any group of two or less staying in Boston. read more

This hotel was amazing. After reading some reviews out there, I was a bit worried that the size of the rooms may be a problem. However, the rooms had more than enough space. Yes, if you are a family staying here then you would be cramped - but, I was there with one other person and there was more than enough room. The room itself was great, as advertised it was very boutiquey. The bathroom was very clean and looked like it had just been renovated. The shower was pretty spacious and had speakers playing whatever was on the television. As for the lounge, I'd have to give give some more praise. The drinks were great. I'm not a fan of sugary drinks with a bunch of ingredients, but I tried the Crantini and it was delicious. The music playing was nice as well, with a good eclectic mix - but what was really great was that it wasn't too loud where you have to yell to ensure the person next to you hears you. Also, all of the bar staff were very friendly, but Jefferson was awesome. Overall, the room was great, the location was great, the staff was great. The only complain I have was that the breakfast was a bit skimpy, but this was far from a deal breaker. read more

I went to a private party here once as well which was very well staffed and well-run. i love a good hotel bar, and this review is for the bar only. let's face it, the drinks are a little pricey and the bartenders know this. they also know you're most likely in from out of town and are looking to have one or two drinks to get stiff then you're either going back to your room or out to a nudie bar. either way. this knowledge causes them to make real drinks. get a scotch, and the glass is full; get a rum and coke and the coke is for color only. the charlesmark is no different. trendy decor with good service. there is a lounge area upstairs, but i usually sit by the bar. i've always had good service, even when the bar was somewhat crowded. can't tell you anything about the hotel itself. i live in boston, so i tend not to stay at hotels. i can, however, assure you the bar serves alcohol (not sure about the no alcohol votes). read more

This review is only for the bar/lounge. The decor is modern and chic using mostly black, white and red. You feel as though you've stepped into a really hip LA club. The bartenders were friendly and terrific and served up some of the best cocktails I've ever tried. My ultimate favorite was the blueberry lemonade. I could have drunk 10 of them in a row! this review is only for the lounge. i went with a pretty big group last friday for a friend's birthday, and they still had seats even though it was 10pm. the waitress was really attentive and patient even though we were loud and obnoxious and drunk. she also let us split our tab 10 different ways, which i really appreciated. drinks are pretty expensive -- $12 or $13 for one -- but they were pretty delicious. i got the drunken pear, and would definitely have it again for a special occasion. take note: no food after 10pm. boo. minus one star. read more

Pleasantly surprised! I stayed here on Memorial Day weekend. It was all about location location location for me, and being a stone's throw from the Copley T-station, it was convenient for to make quick stops during my stay. For Memorial Day weekend, it was also the most affordable hotel in the area, so I didn't expect that much of the room. When I arrived, I was disappointed that my room was on the same floor as the bar separated only by a door, so I thought I wouldn't get much sleep. Boy, was I shocked to find that it was fairly soundproof. Plus the room is at the back of the hotel so it didn't get any street noise. This place is a boutique hotel and i loved how it felt like one. The decor was modern and fun. I liked the classical music playing in the room when I entered and having speakers in the bathroom too. They also gave us free spring water on the first day and lollipops in the bathroom. I thought they were nice touches. The staff were friendly and helpful. The bar at the front was trendy, and drinks were expensive. But the place had nice atmosphere and the big cushiony couches were comfortable. Great place all around. read more

The Charlesmark was located in a great area, close to shopping and most anything. The room was small, but large enough for me. The room was tastefully decorated and appointed. Actually well above many hotels that I have stayed in. The only complaints that I could come up with were that their free wireless Internet was God awful slow. You would think you were working on dial-up. Also that the room only had a double bed. For one person it is acceptable, but not for two in my opinion. There may be rooms with queen-sized beds but I didn't ask. There is also a nice little bar located downstairs. Continental breakfast was included. The best part was that the price was very reasonable. In fact, for Boston I might consider this one of the best deal that I have ever found. A real hidden gem! read more

I've only been here for the monthly wine tastings... which are great! You get to sample a ton of wine, and they set out nice platters of cheese/veggies/crackers. It's always pretty crowded so you'll probably have to wait in line and have a tough time finding a seat, but I've always enjoyed myself.
