I had to get fingerprinted the other day…read more.. No, really, it's for my new job. So naturally, I drove from Rancho Palos Verdes to Long Beach to get it done. And England Fish & Chips had been on my radar ever since it popped up, I think, from someone else's Yelp review or YouTube channel. This small spot is in the corner of a strip mall and I've heard the lines can be long at peak hours but at 3pm on a Wednesday, it was a breeze and the friendly and smiling owner gladly took my order. I ordered a "Snacker" Fish & Chips for 7 bucks and change and it came out after perhaps a 5 minute wait after ordering and piping hot. HOLY MOLY; this place is LEGIT. My go-to spot for Fish 'n Chips in L.A. has always been Ye Olde King's Head in Santa Monica but this place is closer and truly delicious. For just over $7, you get a very large piece of fish and a huge helping of fries. The breading is delicious and perfectly crispy. The fish inside is delicate, flakey and moist. Your meal is served with ketchup and delicious tartar sauce but I'm a traditionalist and love dousing my F&C with Malt Vinegar which is on every table in the joint. I did cheat and tried the tartar sauce for some variety and it was fantastic. What an amazing hidden gem! TIKI DAVE HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDS England Fish & Chips! If you like TIKI DAVE's reviews... We both went with the Deluxe Platter (1 fish, 1 jumbo shrimp, and 5 scallops, served with fries) and had a cup of water to drink. Took about 10 minutes for them to freshly fry everything. We ate there. Speaking of the inside where we ate. Hot as a motherfucker! Seriously, sweating. Not sure if their AC was broke or what, but it was hot in there! Anyways...to the food...... How was it? Eh...just ok. Deluxe Platter- Looked great! Tasted, just ok. The shrimp was delicious, wish I had gotten all shrimp. The scallops were pretty good too. It said it comes with 5 scallops, but we each got at least 8 or 9. They were small, but tasty. The fish though, a little disappointed. It was "watery" and the batter had absolutely no salt/seasoning on it. Same with the fries. No salt at all. My Mom liked it better than I did, but even she complained that it needed salt. The owners were super friendly and I'm glad they do a good business. Might be a one and done for me though.

For starters, we got the Parker House Rolls, which comes with truffle butter, local citrus honey, and grana padano cheese. These rolls were so fluffy and flavorful. We also ordered the hummus, which was so rich and creamy, and the oysters from the raw bar. For the main, we ordered the Smoked & Glazed Pork Chop, Fish & Chips, and the Wedge salad to share. And let me tell you, that everything was so good. The Smoked & Glazed Pork Chop came with a whole show, where staff would bring out the dish in a smoke-infused glass dome and open the dome when presented on the table so we can smell and see all the smoke. Not only was it beautiful to look at, but it tasted just as beautifully. The meat was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the rainbow swiss chard, cheddar grits, candied pecans, and avocado honey helped balance out all the juiciness from the meat. They use haddock fillet for the Fish & Chips, which was fried to perfection. The Wedge Salad is what actually knocked my socks off! This was one of the best wedge salads that I've ever had. It had your key ingredients: iceberg, buttermilk dressing, red onion, crumbled egg, tomato, bacon gastrique, blue cheese, dill, chives - but something about this salad was different! It was so refreshing, flavorful--just everything you want in a dish. We ended the dining experience with their Peach Cobbler Hand Pie, which came with streusel, pistachio crumble, salted caramel, and vanilla ice cream. Can't wait to go back when I'm in the area!

The fish was perfectly crunchy and fresh as can be. The couple working it (Hi Michelle) were so sweet and hospitable. They have a special $9.85 (or something like that under $10) for 2 pieces of fish, 2 pieces fried zucchini, fries and coleslaw. Such a steal of a deal. Truly cannot recommend this cute little hole in the wall more. Vibe was great. When I got home my 5 year old said "what's the smelll, can I have that?" And ate my second piece of fish for me. The inside looks like it is was an H Salt's, which is what i was looking for. On the other hand, it looks like it hadn't been updated since the 70s, except for a few fishing signs and plants. The menu looks like the original one. It's that old school fried food thing, The woman who takes your order fries the food. I got mine to eat here. She brought the food to my table. It's frozen fish in that famous triangular fish piece that no fish looks like. The fish has good crunch but little actual taste. The tartar sauce does not taste like it was freshly made and it's a little overly sweet. But the friend fish with the vinegar and tartar sauce was what i was looking for. This is the kind of place that is reminiscent of what H Salt was. Maybe my memory of what this tasted like is inaccurate. But it just doesn't taste as good as I remember. But that could be me or the place, or both. If you want this kind of place, it'll work. Just don't expect much.

There is metered street parking and it's not too hard to find a spot. The decor is also beautiful and it's a wonderful ambiance with consistent GREAT service. On the real real- I am disappointed in the food. Each time. Every time I've been here I actually don't eat the food beyond a bite or tie because it's just not good. However, I will say if you are looking for a cute place to people watch on second street and grab a cocktail then this is perfect. I've tried over half of the menu and I've never been impressed with anything. I never can even get past one or two bites. I kept going back to give them another shot, but at this point, I've decided I can't recommend anyone to eat here, especially for the price point. This last visit I had an amazing bartender and preserved a poke bowl, ceviche, and shrimp cocktail. None were good and I can't even call them satisfactory. I had two bites of the poke and it was bland, boring, and actually tasted bad. Same with the shrimp. The ceviche was also off and my friend and I left full plates and no questions were asked as to why and if we liked the food. We didn't. Very cute place, friendly servers. Mediocre at best food, and very expensive. This 11th chance leaving disappointed (and hungry) was the last chance. I tried.

But our server... all we could say was Steve, Steve, Steve!!!! He took the cake! Talk about impeccable service and making you feel genuinely welcomed--that's an understatement. This was my second time here, and I've gotta say, I think this has officially become one of my all-time favorites. Downtown Long Beach has always had such a fun, foodie-filled atmosphere. I know some restaurants are struggling, but it's because they didn't have the same atmosphere & service. The food is great, but what really stands out to me are the PEOPLE. Even the servers who weren't serving our table intentionally, smiled, and said hello as they passed. I even remembered one of the servers from my last visit and her sister because they both have some of the most inviting personalities ever. That says a lot about the culture of a restaurant. We also had the opportunity to meet the new GM, which was another nice touch. Great food. Great ambience. GREAT people. And Steve,,,you're the best! 10/10. We'll definitely be back.
