I freaking. love. this. place. It's such an easy gem to miss. The outside definitely looks sketch and I'm always nervous to leave my car out there. What awaits inside is completely worth it. Inside, it's tiny and dark in all the right ways. The craft cocktails are solid, although the menu isn't that extensive. They do make a mean moscow mule, their ginger beer isn't too sweet like a lot of places. All of their food is fantastic. I particularly love their Wednesday $2 taco night. Soooo, Midtown in Houston tends to be full of full-blown douchebag joints. The reverse is true of Community Bar. It reminds me of Old Absinthe House or Jean Lafitte's in New Orleans. I was scrolling through my check in's and just realized i've never written a review for Community! For shame. I love so many things about this place. The bartender is awesome. He can make you anything your little heart desires. They do have beer but not a huge selection. They lean more towards cocktails made with fresh ingredients and fruit infused vodka's. Their cheeseburgers are stupid good. Like don't even go anywhere else y'all. Now, let's talk about what made me fall in love with this place: Goat. Cheese. Eggrolls. Shut. UP. The first time I experienced them I was with Rachel B. and Mike W. drunker than shit. I needed fried food and that is what I ordered. I woke up the next morning thinking about these egg rolls, but i didn't know if I was just super wasted or if they were really just that good.....I'm happy to report that I have ordered them 3-4 times since then and wasted or not, they are gooooooood. So walking up to Community Bar I wasn't expecting much. However, after making it to the bar we were nicely greeted by "Dani" the bartender. FIrst off she was cute and a lot of fun. They ran out of crown so we had jack and cokes instead. I was already knocking off the stars, but we decided to at least finish our drinks and give it a shot. As we stood at the bar we noticed they were playing WANTED on the tv in the background, thought that was kinda cool. Then I noticed the music, first I heard your basic top 40s, then a country song, then some chopped and screwed rap, then some latino, and ended with some rock music. I made a comment and Dani told us that's what you get here. It's just a crapshoot. She said especially with the food. Sometimes its good sometimes its terrible. We kept Dani company for awhile and I saw this odd bottle on the backshelf labeled belvedere IX. I asked her what that was? Since it looked like a halloween version of belvedere. She was like you wanna try it? It's a promotional bottle so it's free. I never turn down free drinks. OMG this thing is terrible. It contains items such as ginger, almond, and cinnamon. But at least she gave it to us for free. I will be back for another random night at a very odd spot. read more

I've been hankering to check this place out since it's so highly regarded on Yelp. I'm always on the hunt to expand my horizons as I'm always finding myself in the same ole Montrose dive bars. We came here on a Wednesday so there wasn't much of a crowd. There were possibly a dozen or so people lingering around the front porch seating area and then maybe six of us, tops, hanging on inside. We somehow made the best of it and grabbed a couple of drinks and a booth. The bartender was extremely friendly and offered her opinions on what to drink when I inquired about any signature drinks. The patrons kept mostly to themselves and seemed to comprise of late-twenties to thirties locals - the majority having that "I'm a regular here" quality. This feels like a well-maintained dim dive bar. I think I really much enjoyed it just because of its simplicity. The couple of hours spent there were pretty darn uneventful, but I was rather pleased at how friendly and pleasant everyone seemed. I would not hesitate to stop by here again, but next time it'll be on a more hectic day so that I can better assess whether this bar deserves all its high ratings. read more

I have mixed emotions while I'm writing this review, I'll explain. I walk in to Community Bar and walk up to the bar. The bar was not very busy but I still had to wait 15 min to get a beer. No exaggeration on the time! No, "I'll be right with you." or "how ya doing" at all. I order a Budweiser only to be informed they don't sell Bud. For real??? I thought it was a law if an establishment in Texas sold alcohol they HAD to carry Budweiser! Well there was two strikes already and I didn't want to wait for the third so I left. I was persuaded to return that same evening by grand tales of the best steak night in Houston. I'm glad I did! After a wait of around an hour I had the best looking, smelling, and tasting steak in Houston in front of me. Everything on the plate was perfect. Hats off to the master chef that prepares these plates! I went back the following Tuesday for a repeat of all the above. VERY slow service, a longer wait this time for the steak (about an hour and a half) and another perfectly cooked steak! So..... If you have plenty of time and you're very patient and don't drink Bud and want the best steak in town, Community Bar is the place for you. I'll probably be back for more steak nights here but it'll be a night when I have all evening to burn. Fix the service and I'll be a regular for sure. read more

I feel like this bar will not appeal to everyone, so that is why I am leaving this review as an out of towner who was searching for a hip yet quiet enough place to introduce my fiance to friends. We originally chose this place based solely on reviews. Like people write, this is a bar for regulars. If I lived down the street I could definitely see myself coming here. However, this is not a bar to travel to. If you have one night in Houston to check out a place, this is not it. It is not close to any other bars or night spots. There is very limited parking. This was not a problem on a Wednesday night, since there was almost nobody there. However, I would hate to try to figure out parking if there were no spots out front. We were there from about 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. the Wednesday after Christmas and it stayed pretty empty. It is very dark inside. The Ginger Beer is good. I tried the Dark and Stormy and the Moscow Mule. The Moscow Mule was more soda like, but the Dark and Stormy was delicious. A friend tried the Spicy Tequila drink and it definitely has a kick. Not my style, but I could see how it would appeal to other people. It was $2 tacos so we tried some tacos. They were delicious. They have crunchy shells, which surprised me, but my fiance keeps saying they were really good. Again, maybe if I was more laid back, or maybe if I lived in town I would enjoy this bar more. However, because I usually spend less than a week back home, I probably will not go back to this place until I am older and wanting something quieter. read more

Very casual, laid-back bar/lounge in Midtown. My partner and I were all dressed up and escaping the holiday work party and were driving around looking for parking and stumbled upon this place when a car pulled out of a spot right in front of the joint! Sweet. Before I checked Yelp Mobile, I ordered a mai tai. Don't get me wrong, it was good and strong, but then I read the reviews and realized I needed to try anything with their ginger beer since they make it themselves. Partner got a dark and stormy and it was goooood. The table next to us ordered food and The Dude-lookalike Chef Bob came out and chatted them up. It's a small space with a more private, cozy space just right of the entrance. The remainder is small tables along the windows and some bar-height tables toward the back. They have a patio which is probably nicer in warmer weather. It was early for a Saturday night so not too busy (but still hard to find parking in Midtown!), but picked up within an hour with some women walking in wearing reindeer headbands with mistletoe hanging (tantalizingly?) above their heads. This place was ... interesting on a Tuesday night. Very hopping and busy; every bar seat, table, and outdoor area was taken. It seems to be quite the place to see and be seen -- girls making out with each other, bros scoping the girls, etc. Despite the menu having lots of food listed, they keep it simple on Tuesday nights: the steak special only ($17 for 16 oz steak, 2 delicious sides). I felt a little bad for my friend who ordered it because it literally took over an hour to come out. (Did they run out of steaks or just have a tiny grill on which to cook?) The steaks would come out in twos and get handed out in order. So despite all this, the drinks are fantastic. My friend and I had tried the Moscow Mule (ginger citrus), Mo-Tea-To (like an alcoholic sweat tea/Arnold Palmer), and some delicious mystery drink the bartender concocted for us after the steak was consumed. This thing had Three Olives espresso vodka among other things in it, and it was DELIGHTFUL. I really wish I knew what it was called so I can recommend it to you. Anyhow, this was offered to us for free probably because the steak took so long to arrive. What can I say? I left on a good note. MUST TRY MYSTERY DESSERT DRINK AGAIN. I absolutely love the steak nights here! I've been twice, and I have to say this is one of the best steak nights in Houston. They've got a tender, moist steak with a chimichurri sauce on top. I'm not sure what it is, but the steak has a great sweetness to it. It's garnished with some mashed potatoes, creamed corn, and pineapple, which complements everything perfectly. Only down-side I'd say is it's kind of dark and small - too dark for my tastes at least. If you're not at the bar, it's kind of hard to see the person right in front of you if you're there to sit and talk. read more

Thai pie: it's not even legal to combine all my favorite foods into a green curry chicken pizza ... but my fantasy surpassed the reality: a confused jumble that falls apart when you look at it: not more than the sum of its parts; barely a hint of green curry or coconut; not bad for bar food, at least it's not fried, but not remotely a draw. I love mushrooms, but they're misplaced here. The Moscow Mule is quite bland and watery; not impressive for homemade ginger beer. The jalapeño tequila margarita is better, spicy with a clear jalapeño flavor, but still not an entirely memorable draw. The bar was full and everyone else had a bottle in hand; I'm not surprised that they eschewed the expensive mixed drinks. Nice speaker system, and the bartender was choosing the tunes, with some good track vetoes. She was the only person out front during Friday happy hour, but they weren't trafficked enough for it to be a problem (again I'm not surprised.) If I worked or lived nearby, it might be my community bar, but it's not at all a destination. A good place to stop by if you're nearby, but pretty much one big "meh." read more

This bar for steak night specials tops any other place in Houston. I love Hideaway, but I will pay a few more dollars for this perfectly cooked steak. In comparison to Hideaway, their service is really fast and their sides trumps Hideaway's baked potato and side salad. Also you won't have to yell at the top of your lungs as you do at Hideaway because of the live bands. Seriously you are in for an extremely flavorful ribeye steak topped with chimichurri, and a side of corn and mashed potatoes. You HAVE TO TRY IT!! **Tuesday night is their steak night special! This is a nice low key bar with friendly staff - Danni especially. I like the taste in music (you can see the iPod right there lol) . The prices are reasonable too. There are however some things I think would help: When we got there, it wasn't very busy but soon the place was packed. Getting drinks would take around 10 minutes. For a long time it seemed like there was one bartender. Even when the other one came, people were pretty much jumping over each other to go to the bar. I think on busy nights, they should consider setting up a bar outside on the patio or maybe on the side. At least have a beer tub set up to cut back on traffic. Also, and this is something I comment on with every place, your HDTV would love to get an HD signal. I know this isn't a sports bar, but if you're going to do something, you might as well do it right. While on the subject of TV, when you have the channel on Skinamax, you should realize that after hours they show naughty stuff. I decided to check out The Community Bar because the review were good and the picture of the food looked amazing. This place definitely hit the mark. The atmosphere of The Community Bar is perfect for what it's going for. Sort of divey with character all around. One particularly great touch is the chalk drawings at the top of the bar which lists their drink menu. It definitely stood out and even my brother, who doesn't really care much for that sort of thing, was a fan of it. We ordered the pot stickers, the spring rolls, the yardbird taco platter, and the cheesesteak. Everything was delicious. The portion sizes of the spring rolls and pot stickers were ridiculously large. Definitely make sure you have someone to share them with. The Community Bar also has their own homemade ginger beer. It's probably worth a trip here just to give it a try. Overall, I definitely would recommend this place. The only reason it gets four stars instead of five was that it was insanely hot inside and the service was a bit slow. Definitely would like to give a try on steak night. read more

This is a review of just the amazing service I've continued to have here... although I've only checked in here just once, I've been here several times and I'll only stay and visit if my favorite Bartender Will is working, he never disappoints! There was one bartender there that I absolutely did not like and feel as though she was a bit racist, anyway, Will is amazing, it's as though he read my mind in what I wanted, he knew I wanted water, he knew I was hungry and he knew I wanted a shot and didn't have to ask!! They serve food til 1:30 am guys and his taste in music is impeccable!! He knows how to spin on the 80s and also new age synth pop! I had the gaucho fries and they were very very tasty with a mix of regular and sweet potato fries and loved the chimicuri however, they could turn down the vinegar a notch on this dish but overall very tasty! I didn't get the hours of my fave bartender but if you go there during his shift you will not regret it!! AND he loves BANKS!! I'll be going more often now!!! read more

It took checking out three unexceptional bars during a recent impromptu bar crawl before we finally happened upon this one, but ending the night at Community Bar made the journey worth it. The Community Bar has it all - low-profile, unassuming feel; sexy, come-hither lighting; personable bartenders you just may add to your iPhone contacts; a crush-worthy cocktail program and a scrumptious smattering of fit-for-a-foodie eats. The best part? Those eats are available late night, too. This is my kind of bar. Need further proof? Recently after an Astros game, a few of us were in search of a bar. Not because they had lost; we didn't need liquid consolation. Rather, it was all celebratory. They won! After much shrugging of shoulders over cell phones, we decided to regroup and expand our party at The Maple Leaf. After much volleying of ideas, Olivia came to the rescue with a bar we could all agree on. The Community Bar. (I keep wanting to type Community Coffee...hmm...moving on.) Post modern industrial meets 70s. Not disco 70s, more of a former office building 70s, without any seediness save the porno playing on the TV screen. Imagine an old office space stripped down, "unfinished," and slightly sandblasted and you have the setting for Community Bar. Then throw in comfiness with a seating nook and a long window seat in front with many plush pillows. Curtains hanging from the ceiling. The bar is smallish, but was perfectly proportioned for our small unintentional invasion party of twelve. (For a while we had more than doubled the occupants in the bar.) We spent most of our time on the patio. The night was nice and it afforded us the noise space to be rowdier than auditively comfortable for the average person. I kept noticing a guy walking around in a chef's costume, and sagely thought "they must serve food here." As I kept spying him, I got hungrier. Then I realized it had been many hours since lunch and my few nachos at the Astros game. Since the kitchen was mostly closed, we decided to order a pizza instead. Late Nite Pie, it was good, but nowhere near as great as the impromptu meal thrown together for us at Community Bar. The chef "made do" with what he had and it was amazing. It was actually an odd cast of characters there that night. Uber-awesome chef wandering around, smoking cigarettes occasionally. Affable bartender somehow managing to keep up with all of her patrons. A couple wandering around measuring stuff (randomly) with a tape measure. I wasn't certain if it was performance art or for real. Some blithering Scotsman droning on about something or other. As his translator was passed-out drunk under the table, we couldn't understand what he was saying more than half the time. A few of us were reduced to just grinning and nodding. read more

Sometimes it's not just about the booze... I've passed this place in the daylight (after visiting Spec's) and never thought to stop in. By all appearances, it comes across as just another little Midtown bar (which doesn't interest me in the least). Coming by here at night is a whole other story... you catch the vibe I'm sure they were intending. As everyone has yelped before, it is a cozy place and maybe even small, but as Goldilocks was thinking -- it's just right. A short, but incredibly well stocked bar is attended by an able and attentive mixologist, Dani (this particular evening). Since it's not just about the booze (which is good), I have to move onto the food. Despite the late hour and diminishing supplies, our peckish Yelpie crowd was treated to some wonderful off the menu, improvised snacks by the imaginative Chef Bob. Ginger spiced pork pot stickers with mushrooms sauteed in a red wine reduction, a truffle flavored macque chou corn dish (I'm inventing a name here), and a tasty Asian/Belgian influenced side of sweet potato fries served with a sweet dipping sauce just whetted my appetite for what I'm sure is a great daily menu. Now I know why Community Bar is described by one of my Yelpie compadre's as a GastroPub. Baseball game is over, where should we go?? I have gotten a few suggestions, butt NOTHING suits my fancy. Been there, done that. I want to do something different. I want to break free of the old ball and chain. We all meet up and BOOM a lightning bolt of genius strikes me. We can walk to Community Bar. I haven't been there in a while. So, it is decided. A three block walk should be well worth it for the 10 or so yelpers (especially since we ate lunch at Christians Totem). So, we depart. We weren't one block away when Alex A. began to moan. I really thought it was American's that were lazy. Clearly I was wrong. Upon arrival, we all belly up to the bar, order our cocktails and beers, etc...we split up and checked out the various little areas of this special little bar. There is a casual little seating area with comfortable seating got 6-8 people complete with a large ottoman with a decorative tray on it to keep you from spilling your drink. (Brilliant). The outdoor patio has all bar height tables and bar stools. There is plenty of seating for all of us yelpers. Pleasant surprise...the bathroom. Very roomy and smells quite nice. The bartender, a hot little number named Dani, is quick and precise. A friend and I downed a shot, which were unreasonably gigantic and difficult to take in one gulp without dribbling a bit. I am pretty sure that Chef Bob manned the sound for the night and he kept it rad! We came in and the Bee Gees were playing, but I think he read our crowds taste right off the bat and switched over to a more R&B or hip hop sound. All I know is I bounced around like the ridiculous goof-off that I am. One more Props for Chef Bob was the really fantastic impromptu meal he made for all of us. Fujio described it perfectly. I won't rehash the details. I don't think it would be very helpful anyway since I don't think any of the food he made us was on the menu. That is the BEST service I have had in eons. I mean to have a great bar is one thing. And it is a great bar. But for the chef/DJ/chef to make us such a delectable meal at 1 in the morning from ingredients he had on hand, not just standard menu items. Which I can only imagine are exceptional. I can't wait to try them out. I hope Dani and Chef Bob liked my company because they very well may never be able to get rid of me. read more

This place has so much potential, but it just didn't do it for me. Granted, I knew almost nothing about the place before walking in but I still wasn't too impressed. The decor gave off a cool, relaxed vibe but the tunes were a complete 180 of that. We kept hearing club music and rock party tunes... nothing else. I could barely hear my girl friend talk because the music level seemed to intensify as it grew later. We both ordered red wine. It was alright - the bartender didn't know much about it. The prices were decent and service was friendly, but it just missed the mark altogether. I'm just sorry we missed out on the food. Apparently Tuesdays are "Steak Night." After a quick bite to eat, We decided to head to Community Bar (Mike W. suggested it to me). It is tucked further down Smith St. away from the central part of Midtown. I drove up and scored a parking space in the front. I walk into a dim lighted bar (talk about dark). There are two smaller rooms to the left and right of the bar, main area and a huge patio. What what...the TV was playing the movie Karate Kid. Sweet I was looking for a tip to wax my car from Mr. Miyagi. "Wax on, right hand. Wax off, left hand. Wax on, wax off. Breathe in through nose, out the mouth. Wax on, wax off. Don't forget to breathe, very important." I headed to the bar to order something to drink. Good heavy pours by the bartender was an immediate plus in my book any day. Drink prices were reasonable ranging from 5 - 8 bucks. I did see a menu and with a quick scan found lots of interesting things on it (lots of Thai dishes). I'll have to try it next time I stop by. The crowd was a mixed lively one. Everyone seemed to be having a good time. The music is just at the right level so you can have a conversation without yelling. The service was quick. Cheap drinks + Chef Bob = great bar. Went here for the first time last night and had a blast. There were only 4 of us and the place was relatively empty when we arrived. We were having trouble deciding what kind of food to get, so Chef Bob pipes in and asks if we're feeling adventurous. We say "sure!" and he says he'll just make some things and bring them out in a family-style service. We only ended up staying for 2 of the plates, but they were both amazing! First, we got a heaping plateful of pot stickers or dumpings (2 variants) that were probably the best I've ever had. We tore them up pretty quick! Next fare was an excellent pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms, and arugula. All in all, this is probably the best bar atmosphere I've come across. This place is so chill and laid back that it makes time seem to stand still. You can leave the daily bs at the door and enjoy some great food, drink, and general environment. Their Tuesday steak night IS THE BOMB. $17 for a HUGE ribeye (I think it's like 12+ oz) with creamy corn and taters as well as chimichurri sauce on the side. You have to order your drinks from the bar, and the beer selection is small and limited to bottles, but at least they offer more than your typical lite beers. The seating areas are pretty small - well, the bar in general is small, so if you have a big group, go a little early. The seating areas, particularly inside, are not very efficient as far as how they use the space, but whatever. Let me start off by saying I am going to have to go back and give this place another chance. I went there and as soon as I walked in, I got hit with the fact that they did not have the A/C going. Already a no no in the big man book, you know we stay hotttt. Well that lack of cool air caused the smell, of what I can only assume was stagnant water, magnify. To top it off, when I tried to get assistance it seemed like the bartender was annoyed that i was asking questions. Either way, I did not have the best experience my first time there. Monday night. What's open? Community Bar! I'm glad gas prices are down, because a friend of mine and I drove all over town last night to find an open bar for a mellow drink. I didn't Yelp prior to leaving the house (I guess I was feelin' lucky )so we drove by the The Davenport - closed, Absinthe - closed, Zimm's - dead. So, we headed to Community Bar. Perfect. The inside is cozy with a nice long bar, two side rooms with couches, etc... It will be a great, dark hideout during the hot Houston summer. The bartender was really friendly and recommended a different gin choice for my friend. I had a glass of wine. Pricey at $11, I thought. It was fairly dead...which was fine. I don't if it's the old lady in me talking, but nowadays I'm down for the most chill night, chattin it up with good friends, great music, and nursing/dowing my drink (depending on how the mood strikes me) and Community Bar fits the bill. Walking up, you'll notice a patio that borders the entire front of the bar and walking in it's reeeally dark inside, but that's offset with strings of lights outlining the barfront windows, a cozy backroom area, and some tables along the perimeter. But the star of the show is front and center with an impressive back lit bar and stools all around. The bartenders here are laid back, attentive and helpful when it comes to drink choices. You'll notice their specialty drinks, much of which are based off of their homemade ginger beer. This is the first place I'd been to to experience ginger beer in a cocktail via their Moscow Mule. I have to say it did NOT disappoint. Fresh lime juice, ginger beer and vodka, it's a refreshing and tasty delight to have on a warm or cool evening. It's my go-to. Not feeling like vodka? Go for the Dark and Stormy, which uses spiced rum instead of the vodka. Both are fantastic! As for the music, it depends on which bartender's running the show that night. I mostly have gone late into the night, so it's usually old-school hip-hop playing. I went on an early evening recently and it was a lot more indie and alternative music. Look all around you and everyone looks like their having a great time. Other great things to note: Tuesday: steak night Wednesday: taco night Thursday: burger night And I have yet to try it, but word on the street is that their burgers are delicious. Tried this place for the first time today with a coworker down here from New York. It's hard to find a quaint little bar that serves great food without the loud pop music/ dub-step loving crowd in Midtown. This place foots the bill perfectly though. Its got a hipster meets Cheers feel to it that I love, and the crowd seems very cool and genuine. It was $2 dollar taco night when we went so we ordered an array of 8 tacos between 3 people. Every taco was delicious! And they didn't skim on the fillings at all. I tried the Bangkok which is made with green curry and chicken. It was so good I wanted more even though I was pretty full. No draft beer? No bud light? I swear to God if I hear another Community Bar n00b say this I'm going to lose it. I live nearby and have been coming to Community for nearly two years now, and I honestly don't have anything bad to say about the place. Let's start with the great drinks; Moscow Mule, Gin Gin Mule, Diablo, Dark and Stormy, etc. You name it and they can probably make it. They make their own ginger beer for the majority of the libations and good god man is it delicious. Next comes the obligatory great food comment; Pot stickers, Goat Cheese Egg Rolls, Burger Night (best burger in Houston, prove me wrong), Taco Night, Steak Night, Pan Fried Bacon slab on a Peanut Butter and Jelly Croissant, sorry I'm getting a foodrection, I have to stop. Last but not least is the clientele. Everyone who comes here is either a regular or trying it out for the first time. It's honestly bittersweet to see so many new people finding out about this place, I'm glad it is doing well, but I hope it doesn't lose the beauty I have always seen in it. All that I can say is that I recommend this bar highly, I can promise you that no matter who is working (Bob, Karen, Mark, Mark or Clint) that they will make you feel right at home and The Community Bar. read more

Stopped in here for an early dinner and a couple of cocktails. The cocktails are surprisingly good. Really good. The Dark and Stormy was awesome with fresh squeezed lime and in house made ginger beer. Those 2 ingredients were also in the Moscow Mule which was excellent as well. To eat the bartender recommended the Philly steak and the nachos. The Philly steak was good, but nothing to rave about. The nachos, on the other hand, were something to rave about. They make their own chips, and are covered in chicken and black beans. Everything tasted super fresh. I would go back for the nachos alone. The vibe of this place is a little divey, which is good for Houston. So many times I'm wearing shorts and I can't decide where to go that I won't feel totally under-dressed.
