New to the neighborhood and was excited to see a little cafe coffee shop so close. Love the classic old school feel and bones of the place. There is so much potential in this space, nothing like it in the area. The pastries and dessert selection is great and I've enjoyed all the ones Ive tried. Was a bit bummed by how empty it kind of felt inside, not the best utilization of that large space and design. Hoping the new owners have additional plans with the store- I heard a bistro/wine vibe was in the works? That would be awesome, and more live music would be great. We stopped in for lunch before heading back to town, only bEcause of the reviews - Although, the store was interesting, YELP made it seem more of a eating establishment - It isn't - there aren't a lot of places to sit-- Mostly toys and tourist junk - I tried the hamburger - I love hamburgers so I know of what I speak. I have no idea what kind of meat this was - It was a funny color - looked like fake meat or like it was breaded - It was dry as a bone. I should have went to In and out and had a so so burger- I really should have drove to Koreatown to Cassells. Or Carney's - And I guess it's against federal law to give you a glass of water to help swallow your food. Trust me - don't fall for the great reviews- Unless you are a soda lover or Melissa and Doug toy lover. We decided to have a bite to eat before going to the USS Iowa, and this place has a very good review on yelp, so off we go following directions that yelp took us. We arrived at the middle of a residential area, unlike other times that yelp had lead us, this is truelly at a corner, it is The Corner Store. Unsure about this but we went in anyway, it was a very nice surprise. Staff was friend, large menu on the wall, coffee bar, and other stuff... Oh yeah! It's a store I ordered a walk on the plank, which is a tuna sandwich on squaw bread, a roast beef and patty melt, all good and tasty. Live music, no wifi. Got to talk with a customer who just finished his lunch. This is kind of a community store, it has group meeting, and other events to bring the neighbors in. Quite a cool place!! I've been here before and I thought the food was decent. I liked the iced mocha but loved the vibe of the store and old school soda pop. It feels like I've stepped back in time. I love to sit in the front by the couches and just hang out. I decided to go again and was kind of disappointed by the service. Amy the cashier is really weird! She was weird when she helped us out. We walked in and she said hello but she didn't offer to help us with the menu or make any suggestions. We bought food for two along with coffee and couldn't get any water to go with our meal. I understand that you sell water but you usually get a glass when you dine in. She didn't offer to heat up our pastry either even though she could clearly hear me asking my friend if we should get it warmed up. She was just awkward all around! If you're not going to be nice or be able to fix a problem you shouldn't be in customer service! This time I ordered the iced mocha again with a frisco burger, soup and half a sandwiches and an almond cream pastry. I got bacon on the burger and chicken noodle soup with a turkey on squaw. I loved the burger but I would skip the bacon, the slices are so thin you can't taste it at all. The sandwich was good, I really loved the squaw bread. The room temperature almond cream pastry was good. I didn't care for the ice mocha this time, Amy made it too bitter. I also hated the soup! It tasted sour and there was no chicken in it. I didn't complain about the mocha but I did say something about the soup. I told her that it tasted sour and we received not a single piece of chicken in the chicken noodle soup. I told her to go and try the soup to see if it's bad or if I just don't like the flavor. She said okay and proceeded to sit in the front for a good 10 minutes. She never offered us another bowl of soup or even apologized for the fact that we didn't receive chicken in a chicken soup. Before I left I asked to speak to the cook and she said the soup tasted fine. I asked how was the chicken cut in the soup since I didn't receive any and she looked puzzled. I said was the chicken in cubes or shredded and she still looked puzzled so I just walked away. Usually when a customer tells you something isn't right you get a replacement. We didn't eat much so we should have gotten another bowl with some chicken in it. The fact that she didn't offer us another bowl and instead just sat there after we said something makes her weird and terrible at customer service. If she didn't know what to do she could have at least told the cook. I do care for the place but Amy and her weird vibe left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't know if I would buy anything but some soda and lounge around. At least you can't mess up selling me a soda. read more

Now it seems almost all of that has changed, prices don't at all reflect what you order, quality has gone down (pastries and food especially), and for all of these changes you also have less to choose from. If you want a great meal in a cozy like home place? This is it! First I was welcomed by the friendly and professional staff. Who took the time to take me through the sandwich menu. At no time did this young lady make me feel rushed. I strongly appreciated that. The sandwich I choose was the Ruben. The bread was delicious and the toppings as well. Ever since it was sold the first thing i noticed was the atmosphere. All the past charm of this place hardly exists. I used to love to browse through the old fashioned candy and stuffed animals and cute gift toys etc. now it looks like a abandoned thrift store organized in the most mundane unimaginative way, bare and with conventional options you can get anywhere. Even the t shirts are uninspiring and lack imagination. Maybe it's the aftermath of the pandemic with slow inventory.The only good thing there is a soy candle. I got a sandwich and it tasted like cardboard. Not surprised. I hope it's only a matter of reorganizing. I will not be returning and definitely not recommend. The menu clearly lists 3 sandwich items as being vegan. When I asked whether the bread was vegan, I was told that they didn't know, and could not guarantee it. I'm sorry, but you cannot list something as being vegan without knowing for sure. A manager/owner (?) said, "I bought the menu this way and left it that way." Ok, but you are the one placing the orders, and you are the one responsible for making sure that the ingredients you are ordering for your vegan items are indeed vegan. How many vegans have paid and eaten there, thinking they were eating vegan, and ended up eating something that may have contained animal derived products. This is deceitful and ignorant. This is a hidden gem near the outskirts of San Pedro on your way to Palos Verdes. Rest assured, they're not trying to be discovered. Consequently, it has a great small town local feel. There are several artist represented here so the paintings represent the heart of San Pedro. They also sell quality drinks, snacks and coffee. Most importantly is their breakfast/lunch menu. The items are priced right (under $10 per entree) and they taste great. I got the club sandwich and it was very good. Everything was fresh and flavorful. I also got a slice of German chocolate cake. I am sad that very little has changed with the new ownership. The pastries seemed a little stale or days old which was surprising. The staff are hit and miss with some being sweet and helpful like they should in a service business and others seem to have no problems be rude and poor customer services. We came here two days in a row, that's how much we enjoyed it! Don't be scared off by the harsh exterior. Inside, the place is quirky and charming. We got a chili cheeseburger with added bacon, which was AMAZING! I love how they serve their burgers on toasted ciabatta bread- it makes all the difference in the world!! Also good is their lemon white chocolate cake. The hot dogs aren't great... But the portions on their tuna salads and Reuben sandwiches are awesome! Also fun is to peruse their root beer and cream soda displays, and choose something fun to drink. They also sell tons of knickknacks, crocheted items, vintage candies, etc but we didn't take the time to look through. Seating is ample, with some big wooden tables that each sit 8-10 comfortably (perfect for large groups!) as well as chairs and sofas. One star off because they charge you for anything and everything. We wound up paying an extra $4 just for cups for water and utensils to eat our meal. Apparently each cup you ask for is $0.50 ... Same for utensils... How they manage to get away with making you pay for water they get from the tap, I don't know. This made me upset, as we were already paying for a group of 8 of us to each get entrees, drinks, and desserts- it was unnecessary to nickel and dime us for cups of water! I love this spot. We have lived in pedro for about 5 years. I found this spot while exploring my neighborhood. They sell all kinds of local goodies. Delicious baked goods. Try the raspberry almond bar and the almond twist & the guava croissant! They have every kind of soda you can imagine and full espresso bar! They have dozens of varieties of sodas, specialty candies, unique gifts and vintage toys. At the counter you can order sandwiches, burgers, quiches and salads. My friends and I have gone to the Corner Sore for years. The Corner Store recently changed ownership. I had tried twice to go in and both times it was just okay but I thought new owner new business, give them a chance. But today was the 3rd time and I will never go back. I ordered a Chubata burger no cheese with onion to go. A young man brings my order out and says cheeseburger to go. And I said it wasn't suppose to have cheese. He says well the ticket said cheese, like somehow that was my fault. Then he says well I can scrape off the cheese for you. I said never mind I'll do it myself. This is a great small store with some pastries,drinks and other snacks. The beat part of this store that it has that old school charm that reminds me as a kid and that's because they have been here since I was a kid. Service is what it is. Found this place by accident, it's inside the neighborhood of a residential area. It really is a retro corner store from the 60's. Halve market, the other a deli. It has a nice variety of old school soda pops, chips, sandwiches with a bunch of other odds and ends. They even have beautiful Christmas displays. Their menu is simple and yummy, and their soda offerings are incredible!!! They have all kinds of niche and specialty beverages, it's more varieties in one place than I've ever seen before. Also, this store has other snacks and essentials, as well as baked goods and locally made items! Cute stuff for the kids and cool stuff for the grown ups. My fiancé and I like to get our brunch here to go and then go eat at a close-by park facing the ocean.
