Excellent food in a trendy atmosphere. We stop by with a relatively larger group of 10 on a Sunday night for some dinner and cocktails / mocktails. Ooo I always make an effort to visit The Daily Catch when in Boston. I first got introduced to the Brookline establishment. The restaurant was tiny with small tables in close proximity for a really mom and pop feel (even though it's a local chain). Food is Sicilian style pasta with emphasis on seafood (because, Boston). This day due to proximity we decided to visit the newest branch establishment near the Northend (there are two places on north end, this one is near the waterfront which is much larger than their other two locations). We ordered the lobster fra diavolo and the squid aglio olio. The squid ink pasta tasted more homemade whereas the pasta with the lobster tasted more store bought, however given the abundance of tasty seafood I would have to give the more tasty dish to the lobster. A tip is that you are often given the standard utensils which was not enough to crack open a whole lobster so make sure to ask for additional ones. The bigger waterfront establishment does minimize the wait time, but go for the smaller chain for a more cozy experience. read more

High expectations were not met. We have wanted to try Daily Catch waterfront for a while now. My girlfriend was out of town on business and I booked her return dinner at the Daily Catch while she was away. I booked on Open table and when I booked there were many other options. We arrived 10 minutes before our reservation on a beautiful Sunday night. I thought I booked an outside table, but they had me as an inside table. The hostess was excellent and told us an outside table would be available in about ten minutes. We got seated in a very nice outdoor setting. It took awhile for our server to come to our table. Here was the main issue, the service was below standard. Many times we had to wave our server down. Whenever anyone brought a new drink or plate, they wouldn't take used plates, glasses. I think it's overpriced and not worth the quality of food. I was able to get the octopus for an appetizer and it was pretty good for almost $20. Nice crunch texture from being grilled. My black ink pasta was bland though, not just the pasta but also the squid meat too. It was definitely filling but I felt like I was just eating it to not be hungry at that rate. The restaurant is a nice vibe though. We ordered the Fried Calamari which was limp and soggy and very rubbery texture. We had the frozen raw sampler. The shrimp were good but the rest was very not good at all. We asked for saltine crackers for the oysters and clams but they never come out. I ordered the calamari and Clam Ligunie with white sauce is it was very bland and gooey. The restaurant is much larger than the Hanover location and has a pet friendly patio out back. Ambiance was nice- a single open room with lots of windows and traditional brick walls. The food was good but didn't seem as good as the Hanover street location. The portions were large and the quantity of seafood was certainly not lacking. I had the linguine with white clam sauce and the clams were plentiful, albeit large and unfortunately, many clams were very chewy. The calamari appetizer was delicious. Two at our table split the lobster fra diavolo and they were thrilled with the dish after finding a third claw in the pan! Gotta love those three claw lobsters. 6/10 I've been meaning to come here for some time as it is a highly recommended North End institution. We sat outside as it is summertime. The raw bar was solid. The garbanzo salad was decent but forgettable. The squid ink pasta was delicious, one of the best pastas I've had in the North End. I was disappointed that the waiter did not bring the haddock that we ordered, so we didn't get to try it. On a more serious note, we were seated outside next to a heating vent that made the already 100 degree temps pretty unbearable. We also noticed that the only other customers seated in this area were the only other minorities in the restaurant. The pasta choices were fascinating......you can pick your pasta, your sauce (a red or white) and then your seafood, including combinations of seafood. The dish was scrumptious. I seldom order dessert but was tempted by the tender with offerings of fresh Gelato. The dish comes with two choices, so I ordered pistachio and expresso. I was disappointed that the Gelato came with drizzled caramel on it. I would have preferred the pure favors and the menu failed to disclose the drizzle but the Gelato was top notch. I also ordered the "cello" flight. Yum. Lemon, Peach and Blood Orange. Fabulous. I had never had any "lemoncello" with flavors other than lemon. The tender also knew my love of Pistachio and gave me an additional glass of that to try. While there, a man came to sit at the bar who ordered a special dish and the chef made it for him. We came here after a musical at the Boston Opera House. It is only a mile away, so if it wasn't during the historical winter storm, we would have walked, it was close enough. We made a reservation through OpenTable for 4:15pm for four people. If you have a larger group, it's probably good to make a reservation, just in case! We were in Boston for Thanksgiving weekend and made a reservation for Saturday night at the bar (that was all that was available when making the reservation a week prior). We had to wait about 10 minutes or so to be seated as they were running a little behind but this was not a problem for us. We actually really enjoyed sitting at the bar and would prefer that in the future. It's a cozy place with a laid back atmosphere and friendly staff. The raw oysters were quite good, better than expected considering the pastas seem to be the main draw here. We also really loved the grilled octopus with warm cannellini bean and escarole ragu and would highly recommend (one of our favorite bites of the entire weekend). We tried to go to the location in the north end but it was going to be a long wait so they suggested we call the other location and we were able to get in right away. The food was really good and cooked perfectly. It is very easy to over cook scallops but these were amazing and the flavor was rich but not over powering. We got muscles, the black pasta with scallops and dessert. The chocolate mousse was really good. Limoncello cake was good but I would suggest the crème brûlée or the chocolate mousse instead. One person in our group was dairy free and they created a fruit bowl dessert for her that was just decadent. They used the compote that they are currently going to turn into a house made sorbet to set the fruit in and put toasted almonds and mint in it. So good! Two people in our group ordered one of the daily specials which either the waitress or the kitchen confused with the other daily special on the menu but they quickly fixed the problem and the food was so good we can't complain. The Daily Catch has several fronts, and this one is on the east side of North End district, away from the crowd, noisy and greasy streets. It is located across the street of a major yacht pier of Boston. It is packed during busy hours, so we made reservation almost three weeks prior. Service: our server was probably one of the best servers we have hade in the East Coast, very attentive and knows the menu well. Kitchen also serves food at a very reasonable pace despite the volume of customers and orders. I took a peak at the kitchen, and I could tell they are a well-trained, well-organized, well-oiled brigade. All small plates and sharing plates were served warmed; very considerate. Drink: Peroni beer and San Pellegrino water. Appetizer--- Oysters: had a whole dozen of local oysters. Creamy (for mid-sized oysters), briney, but not too salty as to needing any drink to wash them down. Bread: a bit softer than some other breads served in Italian restaurants, but they would come handy if you ordered a rich, saucy dish (see below). Entrees----- Yellowfin Tuna: requested medium rare. Cooked to perfection with clear fibers on the rim but buttery at the center. Went quite well with the garnish of citrus. The asparagus tasted tender but had a bite. Lobster fra Diavolo: spicy tomato sauce, a whole lobster and assorted seafood, linguine. This is probably one of the best seafood dishes I have ever had. The sauce achieved perfect balance of spiciness, sweet-sour taste of tomato, and garlic flavor. Now the softer bread would come into play: they could easily absorb the tasty sauce. The lobster was cooked splendidly. The tail absorbed all the tasty flavors of the sauce, but still managed to stay tender and bouncy as well as keeping all the flavor of the lobster meat. It was also utilized to every possible corner; the head of the lobster was also served, and it was packed with tender meat in the front-foot knucles and fatty tomalley all over the head. Mix those tomalley with the sauce and the linguine, and you get the best lobster-flavored linguine imaginable. The claws and knuckles were rather hard to crack, suggesting this was a very vigorous lobster. But if you spend the trouble of cracking them, you would be rewarded with the most creamy lobster meat. Broccoli sauteed: we ordered this to meet our daily veggies quota. They were cooked to perfection, crunchy and had the taste of broccoli, but not so crispy or "grassy" as if they were only hastily seared. We used the broccoli to mix with whatever tasty Fra Diavolo sauce left; best broccoli experience I've ever had. My group of 9 were visiting Boston and had done our research and was excited to try this highly rated seafood restaurant; but unfortunately our experience was ruined with the poor level of service and care of our group. We had reservations for the restaurant at 9:15pm. We were aware the restaurant closes at 10:30 and with our reservation time, we could feel rushed. However, our reservation time would had given us enough time to enjoy our meal if we were seated at our designated time. We arrive at the restaurant a little early around 9, understanding we'd have to wait a bit at the bar. We were not seated until 9:45; 30 minutes after our reserved time. Apparently, our reserved table was still in use above and beyond the 9:15pm reservation time. While the hostess and bartender were apologetic, it was a horrible experience for a restaurant that was so highly rated. Once we were seated, our waitress had forgotten to tend to our table several times. She asked if we wanted bread (assuming complimentary bread); yet she forgot to bring it out. When we asked for it, she brought our 3 pieces and said that was what was left for the night. We had asked for Tabasco, the waitress forgot and we had to ask the manager standing nearby. Lastly our waters were never refilled until we asked after closely finishing up. It was like the servers just forgot about our table once they took our orders and brought the food out. (Which made sense since it was the end of the night and the servers were resting, and dining the back.) This was just unfortunate considering they had already made us wait an extra 30 minutes for our table. The restaurant did not comp us for any drinks or food that we ordered. Although we weren't expecting it. They did comp us a free calamari appetizer while we waited but it also felt like that was a lure to get us not to leave. I am very disappointed in the level or service and care the restaurant provided us. Even though the food was good, the service provided just overshadowed the experience considering the fact that we were tourists, who were excited to try out this highly rated restaurant. For a table of 3, the Fried Calamari, Monkfish Marsala and Squid Ink Pasta Aglio Olio were super. The coating on the calamari was on the thicker side, but still packed tons of flavor and crisp. The marinara sauce was not your typical bottled tomato sauce either, it had notes of chili without the spice and made for a great dip in tandem with the lemon. The Monkfish was the star of the show for me. The creamy sauce with the mushroom and melt in your mouth fish was delicious and is more of a must order than their famous pasta. The Aglio Olio was not your traditional aglio olio with sliced garlic cloves, but instead minced up and loaded with it which was still really tasty. Decided to dine at this location since the OG location does not accept reservations and we didn't want to be stuck waiting around on a Saturday evening. My boyfriend and I both ordered the aglio e olio with squid ink pasta as it's our favorite dish, hence it's the only thing we order every time we're both in Boston! While it hit the spot, we both found the pasta on the drier side, and there was very little sauce, which can be explained by the lack of olive oil used. Food alone deserved 4 stars, but the perks of this location includes: reservations, which means no waiting on a crowded street on the weekends, comfortable seating (both indoors and outdoors!) and friendlier service.
