We stopped at this busy little fish shop during a visit to Vancouver. We ordered the fish and chips, two pieces of ling cod and regular cod and an order of mushy peas. The serving was so big, we could have just ordered a single piece of fish each. It came with a slaw and a mountain of "chips". Seating is hit and miss, but a bench was open so we sat and enjoyed our fish. Both of the cod types were great with the ling cod being more meaty like halibut. The slaw and mushy peas were great and the fries, so so, but that is not why you are here. The fish was perfectly cooked, not greasy, and hot out of the fryer. So good. I wanted to give it 5 stars but the dumplings didn't turn out as much as I wanted to like. $7.00 gets you a plate. Price is ok but there was too much sauce. 3 stars for that. The fish tacos were pretty good. Hefty $20.00 gets you a hefty batch of tacos. Fish fried in crispy battered coating, good amount of greens on top and overall their best offering next to the oysters. The oysters were good. The sauce that you get to dip them in is awesome! 5 stars for that. Fish n chips = just tad under Pajo's. Different batter, different style, it's up to your flavour buds on how you decide. Chips were average but the tartar sauce was Dynomite! And the slaw was nice and clean tasting. Perfect for the fish. You can't beat this place in this street. They got the market cornered here. It's hip, it's hipster, and no wonder people like it. I stumbled upon this place randomly as we were driving along Main Street. We decided to stop by as there was a crowd of people eating their food on the benches outside. That looks like a good sign, right?! We ordered ling cod fish and chips and crab and shrimp baguette. Both were amazing!! There was more than enough fries for two people to share in the fish and chip combo! Fish was perfectly fried and moist. Batter was light, crispy and flavourful. The baguette was more than enough food for myself. I can actually see bites of crab meat mixed with some herbs. It was yummy as well! The coleslaw was light and tangy. It was interesting to have kale mixed into the salad. I appreciated the unlimited tartar sauce I can help myself to as some places like to charge for extra sauce. I only wished there was more seating available. There literally was a counter for people to stand and eat or people can find a seat on the benches to enjoy their meals. I love the rustic look of this place, but there isn't much of a view outside the restaurant. They seems to share the space with another business, or a joint business. I find that this place has the best fish and chips that I've tried in Vancouver so far. I only have 1 other business top it (family business somewhere on Sechelt, that has been closed for a while now). It's made when ordered and the people here are friendly. The price is very good for the amount of food you receive. Would highly recommend giving this place a try. There is plenty of street parking around the area. read more

Oh yea, this is the stuff battered and deep fried dreams are made of. Ordered the 2 piece halibut with extra oysters on the side. Batter was very light, just enough and fried to perfection. Fries were crispy enough considering being covered by fish. Oysters were nicely breaded, huge and juicy. Staff was polite and didn't rush me as I also had some questions about the ready made soup (half of which is stock). I will come back for you.... Recommended for sure. Fish is awesome here! Texture of fish is perfect and the batter is nice. Really enjoyed the bouillabaise, add the fresh bread for $1 more, it's a good sized baguette. Very satisfying! Too bad there's no tables to sit at. We're always crossing our fingers that by the time our order is up, that people would have left a spot on the benches for us. read more

Finally got the chance to try this place. Parking is a pain in the butt sometimes, so I'll drive by and if there is no parking, I won't stop. But, this time I was on a mission to try to this place. I'm calling this soulfood. The fish can be made gluten free! Wow and the clam chowder is lactose and gluten free! Oh baby! I was so happy to eat here. We shared 3 peices of the halibut and fries. The tarter sauce is gluten/lactose free as well! That clam chower is my newest favorite thing with very generous amounts of clam & veggies and I'm telling you I wish I'd discovered this awesome place earlier. The batter on the fish is fluffy but crispy and after you eat you don't feel kinda gross like you would after eating fish and chips. Go, you won't be mad that you did BUT don't expect to sit anyplace bc there aren't really any seats. This place was amazing!!! The fish is SO fresh and their coleslaw is just the way I like it (sour and crunchy!) We ordered the Salmonito and the Halibut fish and chips (gluten free). I've got to say the real winner was the fish and chips. It was incredibly good. The tartar sauce was amazing, the fries were so fresh and not too oily, and the fish - THE FISH!! Amazing. The salmonito was also super good, but with all burrito like things the end got super soggy so I didn't finish the last of the wrap. I would definitely come back again. It's a favourite. So I'm not from around the area. Woohoo California. But I've traveled far and while in my Southern California neighborhood and I have never found a fish and chips as satisfying as these.... Makes me wonder if there are any in Socal that can be as good as these. I know my friend who showed me this place just laughed at me because this is the typical, normal every-day fish and chips she always gets but DAMN! She got it good. You get a nice selection of different fish and me and my friend chose salmon and the ling cod (?) which according to the staff is not cod AT ALL but some mysterious white fish. Still delicious though. Get it! All I must say is that the breading on these fish were perfect. So soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. It didn't separate from the fish and it was seasoned well. Most fish and chip places make me want to add some salt to their fish cause its just so bland. Well. Ok, this place is five stars all the way. Order lingcod fish and chips, dairy free clam chowder to go which is awesome on a cold day, and Vancouver Island root beer to stay local. The clam chowder is a meal in itself and is absolutely delish. It's Vancouver's (not so new, but it still feels that way to me) number one fish and chips spot and it is as good as In-N-Out in SoCal, but with fish of course. Also, one piece is not enough, especially when the fish is this light and flaky. And mine lasted on the drive home for take-out, too. My only complaint is that my portion must have been smaller than those mentioned in other reviews because I practically inhaled the fries and fish no problem and that is not usually the case at some other rival fish and chip mongers. So that one is a bit of a mystery. The coleslaw is also quite tasty but not really my thing; if they aren't too busy they might even make you a salad which is awesome. Today, I stood outside the door (they are closed on Mondays) and gave the best puppy dog eyes I could muster. Love the way Main St and Fraser St are developing new and top notch eateries. The fish counter fills a huge void in this area and they do it well. I had the Oyster Poor Boy and just writing this is inspiring me to go there and have another. Can't wait to try their fish & chips but think I'll wait for a nice spring day and have a picnic down at the beach. While you're there grab a jar of chowder for later, it's really good in fact almost as good as mine. Limited vegetarian options, daily soup, but hey it is a fish store. A small side of slaw and a container of tartar sauce rounded out the meal. It was good enough to boost my rating from 4 to 5 stars. Problem is the disorganized way they take your order and the jostling for elbow room while you wait for your it. The Fish Counter has two sides: market and eatery. The eatery: I love that they offer gluten free fish and chips and dairy free clam chowder. Prices are fair for a big portion. The market: sells fresh and frozen seafood, frozen and ready to eat items, condiments. I come here for the fish and chips but I think I am going to come back for the frozen fish cakes and clam chowder for those 'easy meals' when I'm too lazy to cook. They open until 8 pm and there is plenty of free parking on Main Street and in side streets. Staff are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I wish I lived closer because unfortunately, my grocery shopping is often fulfilled at big chain supermarkets so I don't have to visit 5 different shops for my weekly run :( read more

So called to buy or order some whole crab and after getting passed through 3 people I finally got the "manager" or "owner" who still didn't understand the question of "what is the market price for whole crab today?" With attitude he tells me there are many other fish stores that may understand that question. They lost a good customer who drops over $100 everytime I went in. There are many other fish mongers out there that know what they are doing. I think this place is surviving on the boom of mount pleasant right now but as we have all seen they will only last till all the customers understand it's a rip off and there are many places with better product that understand customer service. Amazing!! I ordered the Halibut and chips and I must say it's some of the best I've ever had. The batter had just enough grease for me to get my fix without feeling terrible an hour later. They have all kinds of sauces/condiments to accompany their fries which were good as well. Service was attentive and friendly. A nice environment to sit and eat on the counter and people watch. At fish counter you definitely get what you pay for. I have tried almost everything on the menu as I work in the hood. Go there almost everyday for lunch. It's not the cheapest place but factoring in the fact they only use ocean wise seafood it is reasonable. The left side of the store has different types of fresh seafood that you can take home and cook and the right side is made as you order it. The fish and chips is what you NEED to go for. Freshly battered right in front of you. But they also have other items on the menu like the Salmonito* one of my favorites, pan seared salmon in a wrap or even the crispy cod tacos...
