Went here for a coworker holiday dinner and it was Just Ok. One of our coworkers is highly allergic to nuts, so we immediately told our server to double check Everything! The Brussels were ok.. we got some soup that tasted like gravy.. pass. The Risotto and the Rock Code were good but the kicker was we order some goat cheese dip... and yes it had PINE NUTS!! Lucky we tasted this first.. we told a server and nothing really happened. My other coworker liked it and we asked for more bread... twice.. table was cleaned before our server asked if we got the bread... "Nope". I have definitely been here twice already and have had almost everything on the menu! They are so creative with the tastes and flavors here, I'm always happy to recommend it to coworkers looking for something close to the office and really good The service here is always top notch and the restaurant ambiance is for the slightly quieter, trendy crowd..that doesn't get too rambunctious even though they have a full bar. What I've had here: 1. Fall Salad - This salad seems simple, but the flavors together create a really amazing blend of tastes. You kind of feel like the rat from Ratatouille..when he's trying the cheese and grape together..and colors swirl all around.. 2. Warmed pears and figs - The portion on this dish is kind of a joke if you're trying to split it, but what they do give you is absolutely nomsilicious. 3. Bone Marrow - This is probably one of the highlights here, the bone marrow isn't too greasy and has the perfect kick paired with the bread. Mmm, so good. 4. Pistachio Meatballs - No, this is not a pistachio stuck to a toothpick and called a meatball. This is probably another one of their "must try" dishes. They only come in three, so order wisely! 5. Tomato Beginning - This is literally a tomato stuffed with a big of yumminess. Great to splitting with two people, but not so much for three. It has a good texture and flavor from the cheese and tuna...this was a close 3rd to items #3 and #4 6. Trio of hummus - I honestly only liked one of the three hummus..but my coworker loveeeed it. She was definitely a fan...especially if you order the fries as an appetizer and eat the hummus with fries. :) 7. Black Cod - the cod here comes w/ a ton of random beans and greens. I liked the way the cod was seared and was happy overall with the dish. Not the best i've had, but definitely far from the worst. now...DESSERTS: 1. Service was on and off.. they were really attentive at the very beginning, but once we said we needed a few more minutes to look over the menu our server seemed to disappear for a long time. Apps: * yogurt marinated flat iron steak (herb salad ~ cucumber raita ~ lavash) $13 - The steak is delicious. It has a good charring, yet is so soft and medium-rare. - These rolled into the mini lavash pieces with the delicious cucumber/ yogurt dip and the greens make wonderful little wraps. Salads: * dungeness crab salad (couscous ~ sumac ~ watercress ~ tomato ~ serrano chili) $14 - A delicious light salad! And so unique - its mostly a couscous column, topped with some greens, yet it's really light so yes I would consider it a salad too. - The crab tops the couscous column and is really tender and blends well with everything in the salad. - I just wish the avocado pieces were cut smaller and mixed in more - rather than being three large chunks placed outside the couscous column. Sides: * crispy brussel sprouts (persian yogurt tartar) $6 - I'm obsessed with brussel sprouts and this is one of the best I've had. I always love it crispy and the yogurt / cucumber tartar is an amazingly unique addition. Entrees: * special: meatball with short rib/ duck, in peas/ lima beans $25 - This is basically a giant meatball with more rib inside! Really tender and delicious meat. - The sauce is savory, and the veggies in the sauce a little plain (and a little undercooked - the lima beans were pretty hard. - My friend had ordered duck but his meatball came with short rib, which he didnt mind nor complain about. But as he was finishing this, the server came and said they realized he had ordered the duck, and gave him an extra serving of duck leg in sauce, wild rice, cauliflower, and greens! Scrambling to find a place to host a birthday party for a large-ish group on a busy Friday night? Look no further. Zaré was the perfect venue for my group of ten friends. It's easy to find parking in FiDi after 6pm and the restaurant was very accommodating to our needs even though we were making a reservation the day before the event. Now that's what I call customer service done right. We started off with the plate of three pistachio meatballs glazed with a honey and pomegranate sauce. Crunchy on the outside with the chopped pistachio topping; tender and moist on the inside - these were a real treat to the taste buds. I don't think I could ever tire of eating these meatballs, although at $3/meatball, my wallet certainly would. For those who are looking for a cheaper appetizer that had bigger portions, I recommend the french fries served with saffron aioli. I know, I know. Fries? At a fancy restaurant?! What are you thinking? But trust a self-proclaimed fry expert on this: the fries were seasoned well with a perfect blend of spices that would make anyone salivate just thinking about them. I highly recommend any of the lamb dishes, even the Zaré lamb burger. I ordered the braised lamb ragu (abgoosht is just a fancier word for a meat stew), and it came with a side of lavash and pickled vegetables. Our waiter gave us some helpful recommendations for eating the lavash and lamb together, and I truly had a great experience here. Try the goat cheesecake for its novelty, but honestly, don't expect it to be anything too special besides the strange goat-esque aftertaste. I was incredibly spoiled at my first trip to Zare at Fly Trap because I went with two regulars who knew the chef and the head bartender. Talk about first-class service! I was also impressed how much of an effort the head chef, Hoss, made to go to each table and meet all the diners. Started the meal with their mussels and while decent and fresh... nothing to write home about. I enjoyed the mussels at Garcon (in the Mission) more. For my main, I got the pan-roasted cod and it came with mashed potatoes and some type of asparagus and fava bean gelee. It was delicious... everything was seasoned well (including the sides) and my fish wasn't overcooked. My roommate ordered the short ribs, which came with a delicious Persian rice and some type of vegetable/bean stew. I found myself constantly picking at her plate. I really enjoyed the short rib and the whole combination with rice. I would order that again. For dessert, I got the "not your grandma's pie" and it turned out to be a deconstructed pie! I was definitely surprised. The plate came with lemon curd, coconut meringue, coconut sorbet, and a drizzle of saffron-mint syrup. But everything was separate. While not bad at all, I think I'm just a normal pie enthusiast and would have enjoyed it more in its normal pie form. My roommate got the peach cobbler and that was amazing! I'm not a big crust person normally but it was super buttery and "homey" tasting. Our friend (the regular) described the food perfectly-- it's not Persian food, but it's more Western food with a Persian flair (and spices). I could not agree more. This isn't traditional Persian food at all. I really enjoyed my dining experience here and would love to go back more often but it's definitely on the pricier side. Came here last night for an early dinner. There were plenty of seats and we did make a reservation in advance. The bar looked a bit packed, so I guess they are pretty popular for happy hour. For appetizers, we started with the the chicken stuffed meatball with lavash bread and the surf and turf appetizer (pork belly, gulf spot prawns and calamari). Both were good for sharing. The chicken stuffed meatball was just ok to me. It was a lot bread-ier than expected and I wanted the meatball to be meatier lol. The surf and turf was interesting. I believe the head chef came out and presented this to us and told us an interesting fact about how the prawns are male when they are young and then they are female when they are older. #themoreyouknow For my entree, I went with the cinnamon braised beef cheeks. It was cooked perfectly and I enjoyed every bite! For dessert, we did share the baklava which was a great end to the meal. I'd highly recommend this place for small bites and drinks. So for starters we ordered the avacado dinner it had blood orange over arugula with cashews and a great sauce. Following our salad we ordered kashko bademjoon a Persian style eggplant dish with kashk (Iranian sauce) We decided to order Abgoosht with a side of cauliflowers and also ordered cinnamon braised beef shank which the beef texture was so superb and tender that I recommend it highly. My girlfriend and I are visiting from NYC and we were recommended this place by a friend. We are so glad to have friends with such good taste because this restaurant did not disappoint. From the atmosphere to the food, and finally, but certainly not least, the wonderful staff. You can't find a better place to enjoy an evening. Growing up in New York, I've had my share of world class pasta, whether at a restaurant or a friend's mother's kitchen. The gnocchi last night was easily one of the best I've ever had! I feel awful I don't remember the name of the server who took care of us, but we couldn't be more grateful for her. She gave us a few SF suggestions and they were beyond our expectations. Instead of an Italian-like broiled/grilled eggplant, this was more mashed into a mustard-colored puree. "It smells like my mom's old Asian medicinal recipes," Maggie said. We came here to check out the 7x7-recommended pistachio meatballs. Sadly, we thought that was the most disappointing part of the meals. Although we were a bit split in our views on the meatball, overall the meat was on the dry and crumbly side and we didn't particularly like that neither of us could figure out the type of meat it was from the flavor. The pomegranate sauce that came with it was powerfully acidic and sweet, but wasn't balanced with the taste of the meat. Mostly it left us wishing there was some spicy in the meatballs to tie the dish together. We also had a wild mushroom cake which had pesto, green harissa, and arugula. The mushroom cake itself was great with a meaty salty texture (that we wished the meatballs had had) with a nice crunch on the outer shell. It went nicely with the paired greens. The head to tail goat included quinoa, cucumber-yogurt with lavash, a bitter broccolini-like greens, and a sweet red sauce. We thought this dish was yummy and loved the lavash to make little wraps. The goat was flavorful but a bit on the dry side and again we thought a spicy sauce might have been better pairing for the dish. The rare seared tuna came with cauliflower, lentils, and shaved fennel. It was well seasoned and tasty although we disagreed with how well the components of the dish came together. One of us thought the lentils blended nicely with the tuna (with similar texture) the other person just felt the different components didn't fit together. Lastly, we had a Persian Breakfast (Gin, honey, egg white, lemon, bergamot) and the Cardamom my dearest (gin, cardamom, lime). Both were tasty but the cardamom was lacking in cardamom and the Persian Breakfast was a bit too sweet. For such an upscale restaurant, it was incredibly noisy and hard to hear each other even though we sat on the same side of the table. Overall, the food varied from okay to great (meatballs to mushroom cake) but we felt that the standard for the place needed to be higher for the prices charged. Overall, we would have given the place a 3.5 but the high prices led us to decide finally settle on a 3. (Note we consider 2 stars to be the average restaurant) read more

I was really looking forward to dinner, but I think this place really need to focus on what cuisine it's serving and develop the flavors and dishes accordingly. The service was OK but frankly after coming back from France I found it a bit rushed, I enjoy taking time between my dishes and even when we asked to slow it down it was still a bit rushed. The dishes: The meatballs were great, tender, nice balance of flavor and a interesting take on the sauce, a nice surprise. The kashk bademjan was just a mess, the dish had no flavor to me, it was very bland, messy, nothing was nicely plated, the eggplant was just piled on the bread, we had no idea how to eat it. The bone marrow was nice, but the baguette served with it was just not good and the preserve that was served with it was more sweet and didn't really cut the richness of the marrow. I would have liked to have something more citrus or even berry that would complement it. Then the scallops I think for us were the most disappointing. There was only three scallops in the entire dish, then there were both roasted and mashed potatoes and asparagus. It felt more like the protein was the afterthought not the center of the dish and the flavors again were all flat and bland. We also had a few glasses of wine, while the sauvignon blank was great the reds were overpriced and not very good selections by the glass. All and all for the $120 tab we've had much better dinners and definitely are not looking to come back here. read more

Wowee, this place is the best. I must declare working in San Francisco has it's benefits. So just recently I came here with some coworkers and everyone of us thought we should take a luxurious break after working in public transport. I thought I was going to be disappointed but I was so wrong. On the weekdays they open at 3pm which is good for transit workers who finish their afternoon shifts. I heard about this place on Check Please Bay Area and are glad I was not lied to. It's a place where you should definitely come here with groups. Friends family or coworkers please stop by. For portions they are okay as long as you eat your food very slowly. If you eat a lot I highly recommend you do so. We came here for dinner since my mom recently moved to SF. We made a reservation through the website which uses Open Table. I called to check if we could bring dogs and they said of course so our pooch came with us. The open table system isn't letting them dictate who wants inside seats and who wants outside seats. They wanted to put us inside and we had to change tables twice to get a spot where we were outside and the dog wasn't in the way. Kudos to the waitress who was working every table and was able to get us a great spot where our dog was comfy. The outside ambiance is LOVELY. Heat lamps and blankets make it super comfy. The food was tasty and the cocktails were strong. This would be a great spot for a date night or dinner with a small group. Tips: call to make the reservation so that you can explicitly dictate if you want to be inside or outside. If you're outside the worst table is the one closest to the entrance so I would ask for a table that is at least two tables in. Another not so great spot is the 2nd table from the back because it's where the door to the kitchen is. Order plates and share! This let us try both the flatbread and the burger and enjoy them both! read more
