Came here later than normal for a dinner but was able to be seated right away. I feel in love with the Paint-by-Number wall. If it has woodland creature or paint-by-number - I'm in. This has both! Their beer selection is decent and you can't beat the prices. We started with deviled eggs that were meh. Not enough flavor. We also ordered the fried pickles that were delicious. I got a burger that was good. Friends got a grilled cheese that I was told was "okay" and my other friend got a different burger that was also "okay". I will come back to give it another shot. I want to give them a 5 Star but with the "meh"ness of it I will have to try again. read more

For starters, we ordered the "half order" of nachos with beef. Perfect size, perfect taste. My son had the "Americana" burger. Really good, two party burger with a homemade 1000 Island dressing. Very tasty. I had the "BBQ Bacon" burger. A good, no frills, tasty burger. The bacon they used was cut extra thick. The BBQ sauce, which was homemade, was perfect. I could taste it, enjoy it, but it was overwhelming like a lot of other places attempt at a BBQ burger. The service (Ryan) was top notch. I thought the place had a very cozy, friendly vibe to it. I really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately our meal fell pretty short. I ordered a turkey burger which arrived barely warm and took a long time. I think they forgot about us. My friend's burger was also not warm. The side "salad" was just lettuce and dressing - it was very tasty dressing but that was it. Lettuce and dressing. The service wasn't great but adequate. The spicy margarita was good. I truly understand that restaurants are doing their best during COVID, but I think we should still expect our food to at least be served warm. Woo hoo! Comfort burgers and food! This place has incredible wait staff and customer service, topped with awesome bar food! We went here for our Twin Cities Supper Club (timed fortuitously with a birthday), and had a fantastic experience. The blueberry lemonade was delicious and refreshing (and not too sweet!), and the high-brow burger was a flavorful explosion in your mouth (e.g., arugula, brie, burger). The only negative was the burger was sightly overdone (I asked for medium to medium rare and came out well done); regardless, was still delic. The Lowbrow also created a special lemon birthday cake for our event, and it was 5/5. Not too sweet, perfectly tart, way-too-big-slices, and overall, delicious. Two thumbs up to this bar. I'm coming back. Best off? I walked out with a $20 dinner bill. Best deal in town! read more

Instead of fries, there was a green salad option. The salad was just mixed greens, but it was large with a tasty light dressing. And the prices were reasonable! Been there twice - 2 totally different experiences. I'd heard the Reuben and turkey reuben were delicious so I was hell bent on going there. We went for a lunch and while back and I was so underwhelmed. The food was okay, but the portions were scrawny and the service was not pleasant. I was not thrilled when my dining companion picked this place for dinner recently, but just went with it. It was a totally different experience. It was later than normal (or later for us I should say) about 8:30 when we arrived. We were greeted promptly and seated at a high top in the bar. I started with a nice cold white wine. I couldn't decide between the homemade fish sticks or the Pesto Melt. I didn't want fries so I got the Pesto Melt + turkey and a salad. Well, my husband got the homemade fish sticks sub salad for fries. Food came pretty quick and it was great! The panko on the fish sticks was perfectly cooked and delicious. I loved my pesto sandwich. The walnut pesto is a nice diversion from regular pesto. I'm glad he suggested it and I'm glad we went back. Friendly service, big menu to choose from and honestly, it's so reasonably priced. Stopped by for brunch and was disappointed. It seemed like our server had half the tables in the restaurant because she was very busy and not available. I ordered the grapefruit mimosa. It came in a regular glass with ice and a can of white wine. I asked if she accidentally mixed it up with the hummingbird drink (comes with white wine) and she said no...that's our mimosa. I tasted no grapefruit and it wasn't mixed very well. For food, we ordered the bacon and scallion scramble and the chorizo tacos. The food wasn't very original and the hash browns were soggy. I believe they are really known for their burger so if I would suggest sticking with what they are known for. Street parking available and easy. read more

I had the best fish sandwich of my life: The fried cod. It was real fish--not reconstituted mush, in a crispy delicious and thin breading. My wife struggled a bit because the menu, while vegan friendly, is not abundant with vegan choices and most require some modifications. The service was prompt and accurate. Parking here is a problem, especially for people with disabilities. The drivers on South Nicollet are among the rudest anywhere and whiz past to cut off pedestrians trying to cross in the crosswalk. read more

Updating my review. I've decided to downgrade from 5 to 3 stars. Reason has nothing to do with food or value. If i could I would make it 3.5 stars I would. I showed up 20 minutes before the restaurant was going be closed. I was hoping to make an order for take out, respecting that everyone involved wanted to go home at some point tonight. I was met with "we made last call already" from a server who has served me at least 15 times. I served and tended bar for five years. I also own a business now. Super delicious and really cute place to check out! Came here with a group of friends for dinner and was honestly a bit amazed by the simplicity of food offered (burgers, pasta, etc.) but by the attempts to make it a bit more unique! I ordered the Highbrow burger, with Brie cheese and arugula, which was absolutely delicious. For a very reasonable price, the amount of food I got was more than enough! I came here on Friday night prior to meeting some friends at Revival. Overall my experience here was great. They had a big enough bar that 4 of us found seats at during a pretty peak time. We all got a few drinks (great beers on tap) and a couple of appetizers to share. We tried the fried pickles which were great! I wish that the dipping sauce actually had a little zing in the buttermilk ranch (or the breading had some zing). We added sriracha to it and that added the punch we were looking for. We also tried the jalapeno poppers which were quite good. The jalapenos themselves were huge so the cream cheese to Jalapeno and breading ratio was a little off. But the peppers were spicy and flavorful. They have an extensive vegetarian menu which is really nice...great atmosphere and friendly service. read more

If you are not a white male with Testosterone they will probably treat you great. This is my favorite spot to get gluten free grass fed burger. Red Cow used to be good but now sucks and this fills it's place. My friends and I have gone here 4 times this month and every time we are treated poorly even though we keep being super polite and tipping way too much. So the drinks and food are pretty pricey but I kind of expected that based on the area. Not impressed with the service at all, our waitress was very short with us and kind of rude. She also forgot multiple items we ordered. The food itself was pretty good, nachos finally done right. The Americana burger was ok but the bun was really soggy, not sure if it was left out for a while or something. The mimosas we ordered were $9.25 (just a heads up). Came with a big group for a friends birthday. Overall, not super impressed. I had a beet and goat cheese salad that was seriously lacking something. Literally just beets, greens and fried goat cheese and no noticeable dressing. Beets tasted canned. Friends next to me had the nachos and they were laughably bad. Just picture a half a pound of cheap shredded cheese melted on top of 10 store bought chips that was let sit in the window too long. Congealed cheese brick. Yuck. Several friends had burgers and said they were OK, but no one finished or asked for a box, which is never a good sign. Wine and beer selections were fine, on par with other similar places but nothing special. Only thing making this a three star rather than 2 was our service. We really liked Lowbrow! We came on a Wednesday evening and had a group of 6. The wait was just a few minutes and they got us seated quickly. The food was above average and service was super also. Everyone was happy with their meal! Portion sizes were decent and it was a nice atmosphere. The music was nice but a tad too loud for my liking but then again I tend to be sensitive to sounds. When you happen to be leading a group of 10 people who all have different hungers, expectations, and price points, finding a place to eat can be a complete nightmare. This happens to the best of us, and being that I am usually the bossy one who makes a unilateral decision to avoid a 80 minute debate, this has become my favorite Silver Bullet. Kids in the party? NO PROBLEM. Lowbrow is full of kids, and they're typically the well-behaved kind, and they give Etch-A-Sketches to anyone under 5' tall the minute they walk in the door. Plus they have a tasty small-person menu. Complex bill-splitting issues? NO PROBLEM. They split out checks without complaint, and are willing to split bottles of wine three ways to make boozing easy for all. Their price point is totally accessible ($8 burgers, etc) for all widths of wallets. Vegetarians? NO PROBLEM. Great vegetarian options, including a dynamite jalapeno hash for breakfast and a fried tofu sandwich for lunch. Their veggie burger is totally solid, and their fries are delicious. Picky eaters? If you don't like grilled cheese, or burgers, or salads, you're screwed. Go home and cook instead. Otherwise, you're covered. PLUS, there's unobtrusive television for the football watchers, it's relatively easy to get a table even during the brunch rush (15 minute wait? Pssssssh!) and they have a few cute sidewalk tables so you can lounge in the sun. And if all of that wasn't enough.... it's a woman-owned local small business that uses locally-sourced ingredients. Our journey to The Lowbrow started back in September, when my boyfriend and I took a pilgrimage to Chicago to eat hot dog's and hamburgers. Ever since that trip, we've been looking for a burger in Minneapolis that could even come close to Kuma's Corner. Thus far, this adventure has been for naught. But last night at The Lowbrow, we had burgers that sparked that burger light inside of us. Honestly, with the Thousand Hills Beef, the difference is instantly noticeable. Also, the bun was toasted to perfection. My only downside was that the bacon on my burger was way,way, overcooked. I just took it off, and after that, the burger was great. Slightly overcooked than the medium-rare that I asked for, but delicious. Boyfriend says that his burger "The Firebreather" had no downside. Fries were delicious. The kind of fries that, by the time you realize you are eating them, they are half gone. The nachos were simple, but good, with their house-made tortilla chips and tasty salsa. Simple, but good, appears to be the mantra at The Lowbrow. I like that. They also have Killebrew Root Beer, which is awesome. Mmm. Also, the restroom signage was really a neat idea, except, in a hurry to go potty, I walked in to the men's restroom (a single, thankfully) because I missed the signs. I noticed on the way out though (blush). Also, they have both Fulton and Liftbridge Farm Girl on tap, which makes this place a new staple for us. (Not to mention, they actually have TV's, unlike most restaurants I like, which means I can drag the boyfriend their when a sports game is on.) read more

Update: Lowbrow has done a great job of improving on the decor and making their space look cheerful and inviting. Since my original review I have tried the veggie burger, which is good, but I wish a wheat bun was offered. It would be nice to see some vegetarian/vegan specials to switch it up a bit, but the offerings they do have are great. Original Review: I went to The Lowbrow for dinner last weekend, and I really enjoyed it. The space is great, but it needs a little oomph. There is a cool mural on one wall, but the other walls are blank - hopefully they are planning to hang some art or something in the future. I was very impressed at the vegan options and vegan awareness of the staff. I had chips/guac and the southern fried tofu strips. Both were delicious. (The veggie burger is also vegan if you hold the gouda, but I haven't tried it yet. The owner also said you can order a vegan tofu scramble for brunch even though it's not on the menu yet.) They have a nice beer selection and the service was very friendly. This place is definitely going into the regular rotation! P.S. Crazy busy on Tuesday date night - no waiting space therefore everyone in line is crammed by the door, very unfortunately for those seated near the front during the winter months. The atmosphere is casual neighborhood joint, total Minneapolis vibe and by that I mean I heard Portland mentioned 5 times while I was there, also they were playing the Portlandia theme song. I sat at the bar, ordered a burger medium well done, it was more rare so it was oddly mushy but took the health risk by eating it anyway. The fries were good, seasoned well and made me want more. My friend and I left thinking "okay but a different place next dinner date." Based on my food experience and the atmosphere I'd rather head to Pat's Tap for more my vibe and food selection but if you live in the neighborhood and have a family and kids this is probably your spot. Southern Fried Tofu. Get it. NOW. They've learned the trick most Asian mommas have when it comes to texturizing tofu so that it absorbs all of the spices and flavors added and that also allows great opportunities for soaking up delicious sauces. I won't tell if they don't. These sticks were amazing. Light, very well seasoned and crumbed with a tasty BBQ sauce dip. I wanted to eat the whole plate, but we were also sharing a plate of nachos, which were kind of boring compared to the lovely tofu sticks and a plate of the homemade fish sticks. Delicious fish sticks and fries, btw. This food doesn't really take me back to my childhood because what we ate back then was junk in comparison. The only descriptive word I could use for this place that I feel sums it up accurately is "MEH." The place is nice, it's got a lot of space between the tables which is an A+ for people who hate people like me. I ordered a small order of fries and the quinoa burger. The quinoa burger despite having gouda and guacamole, which sounds like an effing DREAM, was blaaaaand. I poured some mustard on that bitch and it was STILLLLLLL BLAND. Serving grass-fed beef burgers and classed up dishes like fish sticks, The Lowbrow offers you the chance to eat like a grown-up while feeding both your inner child and your actual child. This place is really designed with families in mind. They've got a whole collection of highchairs, booster seats and infant carrier stands to accommodate kids of all ages. The women's bathroom even has a changing table with a hook for a diaper bag right above it. I was disappointed that the men's room didn't have the same amenity... (I realize the place has a cool 40s vibe, but c'mon, what's up with that? Dad's can't change a diaper?) The food is great, though, so i put the bathroom issue pretty low on the list of detriments! I got the fish sticks, which are made of whole white fish fillets and breaded with panko. They are firm and delicious, and the tartar sauce is perfect. Hubby and I are on a quest to find the best burgers in the Twin Cities. At the risk of sounding un-Minnesotan, the whole Juicy Lucy phenomena is lost on me. The Nook, Matt's and 5-8 Club are all okay, but none of them are worth my time to review. I like my cheese melted on top, ensuring complete coverage of the beef. My fellow Yelpers guided me to the Kingfield neighborhood (charming and underrated) and The Lowbrow. It's a quintessential neighborhood joint-clean, updated, hipster-ish, great background music (Pandora?). We arrived at 4:30 on a Sunday afternoon in hopes of beating the crowds. Good plan, it was starting to fill up as we left. On to the food! We started with the pork sliders (not shown on their online menu). Three pork patties topped with shredded carrot, sriracha mayo and cilantro. Yummy! We wanted to try the fish sticks, so the waitress suggested the children's portion which doubled as a great appetizer and brought us more of their fantastic fries! Yes, the fries are a highlight here. Skin on, fresh cut, cooked perfect...golden brown and crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Not some frozen crap. Hubby ordered the Lowbrow burger with cheddar, I had the Fire Breather. Buns were nothing special, but buttered and grilled which I always appreciate. A mountain of fries accompanies each burger...more than I could finish, Burgers were both cooked to perfection. You wouldn't think it was asking much to get a burger cooked medium, but more often than not when I do it shows up well done. I especially loved my Fire Breather. It was spicy-just enough to make my nose run a little, but not so hot that it obliterated the flavor. The burger sizes are just right. Key lime pie? One of the best in the Cities! I have only been here for dinner/drinks with friends, so that's all this review will be centered on. A coworker lives nearby this place and raves about it at least weekly. At LEAST. It is his version of Cosi (see my review), except more charming since it's not a chain. Low-key and somewhat funky, it's a neighborhood joint (yes, a bit hipster). Murals on the wall, chalkboard specials menu, little bar in the back corner. Happily, they have a liquor license, and have an incredible dessert menu, so four of us went there to round out our dinner out. We all ordered adult beverages and my peach mimosa (three cheers from me) came with a darling tiny can of champagne with a Starburst on top (how did they know I love Starburst?). We all ordered desserts: two had peanut butter pie, one had mango cheesecake, and I had caramel cream pie. A slice of peanut butter pie was ordered to go. When I bit into my caramel cream pie, I felt like a ray of light beamed down through the ceiling and right onto me. I think the room grew silent and I even heard an angelic chorus singing. The pastry chef even came by our table to check in with us, and she was totally good natured in response to my incredulous "What the f*ck!" at how delicious it was. So I need to get back to try out the rest of the menu - or to order an entire caramel cream pie to go. read more
