When you're trudging through Manhattan, it's already difficult enough to find a "sit down and wait on me breakfast" spot. We located this one on Yelp and decided, or at least I did, that the walk was worth it. You can get a solid breakfast here and it's kind of like an independent Denny's style kind of thing going on pretty much right next to time square, or at least a reasonable walk, anyway. The server was very friendly and greeted us with coffee and a song. No kidding. She was humming to herself when she got to our table and it was very nice. She was spot on with most things including coffee refills so we really appreciated that. Only thing we didn't like was that the coffee was served with milk so we had to ask for half and half. One of the cool things here is that every seat a booth so you can't go wrong. There's a place to hang up your coat and stash your bag if you are trusting enough to do that. it's basically a tourist crowd but unlike that other place I mentioned, the food was doable here. We had omelets but they were hardly omelets. It was more like a scramble with the things we asked for thrown in. The eggs were cooked a little too dry for my liking but it never dawned on us to ask them how to do an omelet. At any rate it was good. We were in NYC for Christmas and one of the things I was looking for was Christmas decorations. They were sparse and lame with some kind of goofy Christmas balls hanging from the ceiling. Come on. Enjoyed our breakfast here. We came here on the way to Rockefeller after parking the car on the street few blocks away. Our waitress, Amanda, was very good. Seems like a lot of tourists come here too because it's in the heart of the city and a place to eat. We came here on weekend so a lot more tourists than locals but sure a good place for locals too on weekdays. I had sunny side up eggs with tomato and lettuce. Amazing that they got it right when they made my eggs really brown and crispy on the bottom part wahoo! Hubby had over easy eggs with corned beef hash. Two thumbs up for both of our plates. The coffee was also berry good. We don't mind coming back for breakfast. It's a crowded place but they sure have enough seats for everybody. We recently went to the city to see the Christmas spectacular and ended up having a spectacular lunch at The Red Flame Diner. When we arrived it was very busy, miraculously, they had a table for 8. We were greeted by the friendly and amicable owner John. John and his diligent staff were very excited to please their customers. Lunch was delicious and most importantly, 4 picky eaters (under the age of 7) ate and approved of The Red Flame! It takes a lot to please them. I think the cherry on top was when John and I played the name game and he figured out that his best friend and loyal customer from 13 years ago was our beloved late grandfather. Talking to John about him was heartwarming and let me tell you, I cried all the way to Queens. read more

Good service, blegh dessert/snacks. I didn't actually try the food, so this review is based off of our desserts. Came here on a Thursday night. It was pretty empty, but I loved the music and the well-lit atmosphere. I enjoyed a strawberry milkshake, and my friends had some tea, coffee, and a cheesecake. My milkshake was not very good. It tasted like milk with hershey's strawberry syrup ...or strawberry milk. It wasn't thick was I was disappointed. The cheesecake was also not very good! It wasn't thick at all either. There was no normal cheesecake consistency - very below average. However, the waitstaff were awesome. They were understanding and accommodating to our needs. The normal food looks good too. People who would normally never wait for a table at a restaurant shiver in the cold for an hour at these happening spots. Even the most dingy unspectacular pubs open up on Sunday mornings to serve scrambled eggs to bleary-eyed hipsters. If you're looking for that this place is not for you - red flame diner has all of the diner morning breakfast regulars of course, their food comes out fast and furious and is fantastic. They even have those shredded hashbrowns that I personally love, as opposed to the roasted potatoes. So if you're just in town and not looking to spend a fortune on breakfast, & want to get out and go explore for the day, this is the place for you. Sunday morning at 8:30 it starts to get crowded, so you may have to wait a few minutes, but they do turnover tables fast. Stayed at the Iroquois Hotel next door and they gave us a voucher for breakfast here. It was delicious, filling and overall a great experience. The staff was very nice and attentive. Our food was out quick and made exactly how we asked, and all of the waiters checked on every guest. This is a great diner in midtown. It's open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's typical American fare, and I have only been there for breakfast, but the food is good. Great place for kids. . . . Also, very reasonably priced. There is usually a wait for a table, but we've never waited longer than 20 minutes on a weekend. Note that they will not seat you until your entire party is present. I would describe the service as competent but not super friendly. Part of that I attribute to being from San Diego and people are just friendlier in general there. The service here is great! Everyone is really nice from when you first walk in the door. There is plenty of seating both upstairs and downstairs. There a little bit of everything on the menu so whether you're looking for breakfast, lunch or dinner, you should be ok. I ordered the two egg breakfast and everything was great! The potatoes were flavorful with green onion mixed in. My bacon was cooked well, just the way I like it. Good old fashioned diner food in the heart of NYC. Walk right on past those mediocre restaurants that charge $30 for a crappy entree, and head over to Red Flame. My grilled cheese, fries, and diet coke cost about $11, and service was polite and prompt. The bathroom was also clean. From what I could tell, they seem to offer their full breakfast menu all day - and the regular entree options were exactly what you'd expect at a diner. This was probably our favorite place to eat from our trip. We mostly ordered for delivery since our hotel was basically right next door lol once we went inside and ordered, and staff was very friendly. Really quick service too, even for delivery. I ordered eggs, has browns, a bagel and hot chocolate and it arrived at our hotel room in under 10 minutes. And everything tasted good for the most part. I would avoid their potatoes though, as those were a bit bland tasting. But the bagels were probably my favorite. Hot chocolate was good, nothing spectacular or anything but did the job. Stopped here for a quick bite with 4 friends. We are staying at The Muse which is a quick walk away and very close to the Theatre District. We got there and we walked right in and were seated. I guess it was roughly 1045 on 5/6. They quickly had water and coffees all the way around. We chose quickly and began chatting. I'm positive we waited not more than 5-8 minutes and our complete breakfasts were in front of us. Piping hot and with all the required parts including toast, butter, and ketchup for the hash browns. While we chatted our coffees were quickly refilled. The diner was bustling around us. Moments later our dirty dishes were cleared and despite the fact the diner was very busy we weren't rushed out. Our check came casually and we cashed out. This diner could teach lessons. We don't have pics. But I can tell you this. Our table was small, but who cares. It was kind of cold out and we saw a show at the Belasco Theatre, which is a little east of "the theatre district". I didn't want to walk to our regular "post theatre diners" and then I remembered The Red Flame (which is right across the street). We had been here a couple of times several years ago and I remembered good things about it. The atmosphere is "light and airy"....everything looked clean and modern. The menu was extensive. There were lunch specials which were still valid at 4:45. I had grilled salmon on top of a salad. It came with a drink. I highly recommend this. My husband had lentil soup and chicken a la king with coffee. He liked his meal too. When we got there plenty of tables were available. When we left it was a full house. The service was quick and attentive. We've definitely added The Red Flame to our "when in the area" places to eat. read more

Now, this was like my first hour in NYC and I don't know how the people are here. My waitress was not personable at all. I didn't know if it was NYC or just her. LOL. I am being a little lenient on the star giving because of the fact I don't know anything about NYC way of things. She threw my menu at me, asked me what I wanted BEFORE I even opened my menu... and basically threw everything I ordered at me. NBD. Anyways. Food was solid. I order corn beef hash with 2 over easy and potatoes. Potatoes were bomb, crispy and semi burnt in places, just how I like it. There were some peppers in there that added some nice flavor. After an interview, I stumbled upon this diner nearby while I roamed around Times Square. The diner caught my attention because of the bright interior inside and once I got seated, I felt comfy. The menu was like any other diner except the prices was a bit on the high side. But what do you expect? It's Times Square!! I ordered sausages with a sunny side and hash brown which comes with your choice of wheat or white toast and coffee or tea. The food came out fairly quickly because it wasn't packed at 10:30AM in the morning. Food was good obviously because you can't really F up eggs, sausages, and hash browns. My sunny side was crispy on the edges, hash browns were also crispy, and the sausages weren't dry. All those cost around 8.99 I believed...can't really remember the price. THEN she decided to find out what was going on...too late sister! Food was less than bland and mediocre. I was in shock that this place was full, because it was the worst food I had in my 53 years of life. I am not from NY, so I enter this restaurant because it was full and I assumed the food was good. Ordered Moussaka, which is my favorite dish. I had a bite and returned. Tasted like nothing, and old. Then I ordered a chicken souvlaki, which is a very plain food, nearly impossible to be bad. The Red Flame gets my first ever Yelp review. I'm kind of sad about that because I'm starting my life as a Yelp reviewer with such negativity. The good: clean location seated promptly complimentary colon cleanse shortly after dining The bad: Oh, where to begin. The menu is expansive. That means only one thing. There is a freezer full of food somewhere inside The Red Flame waiting to be microwaved or fried when your order is placed. Placing your order is a rushed process, to say the least. Within a span of about five minutes, we were approached at least three times and asked if we were ready to place our order. I was clearly still looking at the menu each time we were approached. After making a hasty decision about what to order (under duress from the hovering wait staff), a plate of "food" unfit for human consumption was placed in front of me. I momentarily thought I had committed a heinous felony and was being served a tray of slop through a slot in my door. I sent that mess back and went with another option. The server who hovers to take your order never comes back to the table once the slop is served. Servers have to be called to the table, and beverage glasses aren't refilled. Even after all of the negative attributes, I would have gone with two stars. However, an older male server/manager brought the rating down to zero stars, but that isn't a Yelp option. A young black male was dining alone and the stare-down he received from the older server/manager was uncomfortably obvious. Was the young man unworthy of the slop The Red Flame serves? Was the young man causing a disturbance that was invisible to the rest of us? Unfortunately, no on both counts. He was simply unwelcome at The Red Flame. Diner beware! The complimentary colon cleanse is a whole different story, but NYC has a Duane Reade on every corner so don't forget to pick up a 6-pack of Charmin on your way home from The Red Flame. Just do it.
