The staff at the Hyatt Times Square directed me to The Red Flame as a place to eat breakfast. The place was pretty busy on a cold weekday morning, but I managed to get a table for one immediately. Ordered their Eggs Corned Beef Benedict - which is basically run-of-the-mill canned corned beef over English muffins with eggs and Hollandaise sauce, plus a side of breakfast potatoes. The English muffins were under toasted. As in almost untoasted. I basically scraped off the hash and eggs and pushed the English muffins to the side and ate the eggs and corned beef hash. The breakfast potatoes tasted like nothing. They needed something - seasoning big time. I ignored the potatoes as well after tasting them. Coffee was good. Service was good. read more

This is a great diner! The service is really great, the food is on-point with generous portions and the ever-flowing coffee is great. Something else you'll notice is how clean and bright everything is. I got steak and eggs and the steak was cooked to a perfect medium with nice and runny over-easy eggs on top. The Lox is fresh and absolutely worth trying if you're a lox lover, and the burgers hit pretty well too. Kids loved the pancake stacks. Even the bathroom is clean and fresh smelling. This is my favorite breakfast diner when in mid-town NYC on a weekend morning. It can get crowded, but they do a brisk business, so tables always seem to be opening up. Really classic diner decor, and menu as well. I usually go with something like the omelette (egg white) with mushrooms and spinach. It's excellent, like all the basics that they do. This is a renovated old diner that didn't renovate operation. That's a good thing!! They know the business and handle themselves professionally! From the moment we enter there was a seamless flow. We were greeted, seated and provided menu. Water immediately showed up at our table. I didn't even take a sip and our waitress was there too Welcome us. Old school no fuss ordering. She wrote it down in food shorthand. I watched what she wrote as she took my order! Very cool. After about ten minutes our food arrived exactly as we ordered. No complaints with taste or portions. My daughter enjoyed hers. She enjoys many items on the Red Flame Menu. She frequently comes with friends. I've been here on occasion too. I'm going to enjoy trying some of my other favorite dishes when I'm in the area. My problem is the cost. It is priced for the neighborhood. Similar as other diners in Midtown. I just find it a little high. But you do get what you pay for. As soon as we finished eating our places were cleared. We were Promptly asked if we wanted desert or coffee then the check came. Leaving the Tip on the table you then proceed to cashier up front. Pay and you're already there by the exit. Smooth as a babies butt. :-) I highly recommend. We decided to try "The Red Flame" for breakfast this morning. My son ordered the Belgian waffles and I got the chicken salad sandwich. We ordered the cantaloupe assuming it was the juice since it was listed under fruits and juices. Once the waiter brought it and we realized it's not the juice, the waiter didn't offer to get something else and left it on the table. We did try it but cudnt finish it so thought we will box it and eat later. But when the waiter came to clean the table, he just put the dirty paper napkins on the plate full of cantaloupe and started cleaning up. Not a bad joint, as NY diners come. I was in town for a meeting and stayed close to where I needed to be and this place was there and served breakfast. People complaining about the prices clearly haven't traveled in a while because breakfast for one was less than $25 and in the Bay Area I can guarantee you it's always more. Had a nice Eggs Benedict which came with home fries, juice and coffee (in my case - tea). Was it gourmet? No, but it tasted fine and was ready quickly and when you're traveling for business and are prepping before a long day of meetings - that's more than enough. read more

10-minute wait on a Sunday morning - not bad at all for this area. There's not much of an ambiance; I don't know how else to describe it but "blank." Got the tomato mushroom spinach omelette, which comes with toast. The size was a little underwhelming, but tasted good and it filled me up. Skip this place. Nine minutes seated my father and I got a check for the meal before we could even touch it. Manager doesn't care says the staff is changing shifts. Classic Greek Diner Somehow Surviving in Midtown This is a classic, unpretentious Greek diner in a pretentious neighborhood of large hotels and commercial high rise office buildings. It's a great place for breakfast or place for a quick lunch or dinner. It would be somewhat unremarkable in the suburbs or outer boroughs, but it's amazing to find it at 44 St. and Sixth Avenue given the price of real estate in the area. Go here for breakfast at a third of the price of the nearby hotel restaurants, or if you want a quick sit-down lunch or dinner. Features the usual giant Greek diner menu. Good quality diner food, exceptionally fast service (but friendly) and a bargain in the neighborhood. read more

We were going to a nearby theater not realizing that the St. Patricks Day Parade would be held a day early this year. Saw the Red Flame Diner and decided to go in, partly to escape the crowds. The diner had a festive atmosphere with lots of parade goers but not overly crowded. We were quickly shown to a spacious booth. We both opted for bagel and lox all the way, nice big toasted bagels with a few slices of lox and all the trimmings for $14.95, a steal for Midtown. Our friendly server even offered free refills on the iced tea. We splurged on a piece of warm cherry pie a la mode for dessert, absolutely delicious with lots of whipped cream and a nice slab of vanilla ice cream, plenty to share. I happen to be a pie maven and theirs seemed ultra fresh and homemade. By that time the parade had passed by and we were able to be on our way. So glad we happened on the Red Flame and plan to return again soon. read more

This place gets a one star because of its convenient location. Nothing else. We went here for breakfast. Where to begin? The waitress didn't even say hello, which is normal in New York to be honest. And that's not necessary bad, is just that it is a city where everything is rushed! However, she just rushed us too much to get the order. I order a number one (eggs, toast and bacon) and my eggs were running more than expected, the bacon was just covered in grease, and the toast was a little burnt. The coffee my husband ordered came spilling and she had another one on top that was touching his which was nasty. The food had no salt either and the whole experience was just bad. I think the only thing we enjoyed was the orange juice. Will not be back, and definitely I do not recommend. read more

It's a diner, and is under no illusion of being anything different. The food comes out quick, service is fast and friendly, and the menu is extensive. I had a San Diego breakfast wrap from their long list of breakfast wraps on the menu. It was $12 and pretty small, and it comes with a side of home fries that were nothing special. No salt, no pepper, hardly brown. They kind of reminded me of leftover mashed potatoes that had been reheated. Coffee refills kept coming and despite it being a busy Friday morning the tables turnover quick and there wasn't much of a line. A vegan would have a hard time finding something to eat. It's a good option if you're an unadventurous eater or identify as a person who would never order avocado toast with red pepper flakes. read more

The food was not good at all! The toast came out cold and they didn't put the butter on in advance so I couldn't spread the butter onto the toast. The potatoes came with a hair in them so I had to send them back. The new ones were raw and I could not eat them. When I requested tea which came with my meal I wasn't given the selection of tea they had. The waitress just picked one for me and I didn't notice they had a selection until after I ordered. When the person I was with asked for syrup for their French toast the waitress rolled her eyes. read more

I love diners. I REALLY love NY diners. I REALLY REALLY love NY Greek diners. Red Flame is a very reliable, traditional Greek diner. It can get crowded at lunch time, so I enjoy it for a good greasy breakfast or late-night dinner. At diners, you can get away with the bare minimum of communication. There are pictures on the menu and no weird deviations. No one asks you how you want anything cooked or what side dish you want with your entree. You order, you eat, you pay. Red Flame serves one of my favorite soups of all-time: Avgolemono Soup. It's a creamy chicken soup with lemon and usually some sort of noodle - here they make it with orzo. My best friend's mom made it for us when we were kids and it is one of the most comforting things in the world to me, and I believe the only cure for the common cold. Burgers are good - and the fries are decent. You can also get vegetarian burgers, turkey burgers, and now, bison burgers! The coleslaw comes in one of those little mushy paper cups which is about the size of a shot glass - right out of the 50's. They have a section on the menu called "Diet Delights" - remember the old "Diet Plate" with scoops of things like tuna salad and cottage cheese? Bunless burgers? Yup, still going strong here. Tonight's meal: soup, burger, and a piece of cherry pie. Mmmmmm mmmmmm. With a glass of good old NYC tap water. One day, and one day soon, I will try one of the "French Skyscraper Ice Cream Sodas" which is "Topped With Mountains of Pure Heavy Whipped Cream". How could I NOT? They offer FREE DELIVERY but I would not pass up a chance to sit at the counter or at the small booths that are just perfect for one person. The place is cozy and charming, with its covered cake plates and vinyl seats, and rolling rack in the middle of the floor for heavy coats. It's also a place where you can be completely anonymous, which is a wonderful thing. Service is efficient and just friendly enough. I don't know if it means that I am not a feminist, but I find it endearing to be called "my dear". Red Flame is not a destination spot, but a good choice if you are in the area - much better than many of the overpriced mediocre restaurants that plague midtown. It's very close to the theater district, so would be a good choice if time and money are of concern, or if you just want a simple, filling meal. _______________________________________________ I love that I am staying at a hotel in a $545/night room and my entire dinner at Red Flame cost $14. The burger at my hotel costs $32 on its own. Somehow now I feel more balanced. read more

Decent diner to grab a bite after seeing a show on Broadway. A bit pricey but clean with fast service. Food is OK and gets the job done. Seems like this place was renovated recently. Plenty of seating with a decor that is a bit old school retro. As with most diners has a large menu of options. Pretty classic list of diner foods. Ok egg white omelet and my coffee cup was constantly filled. Not much else to say. I was starving after seeing Hedwig and the Angry Inch and needed to fuel up. Served it's purpose. read more

Ok, why you ask 4stars for a diner in the heart of Times Square? Well for one let us remember it's a Diner, not a 3 Star Michelin restaurant so I grade on its category. And why you ask " are you in a Diner"? Well I was staying at a very nice hotel near the Diner and my colleague and I first started by going to the hotel restaurant ( Gaby at the Sofitel). You know from my previous reviews I am not cheap and at the same time ( like you I expect) don't like throwing money away. Well peeking at the Gaby restaurant and seeing enormous prices for everything we just started laughing -- " I get it. We are in NYC and we should expect to get fleeced -- $100 for two people to get breakfast, all in. Not. So enter the Red Flame. Not pretentious, but is what it is. We sat down ordered ( both our breakfasts were $10each.) and amazingly both delivered in less than 10 minutes as ordered. Very decent food. Tasty. Eggs cooked perfectly. Coffee good not great. Etc. Here's the point, there are perfectly good places right in the middle of normal tourist Traps. Venture out no matter the local and try them. Read the Yelp reviews and take a chance by doing something different. Maybe you'll get a good surprise too. read more

One of the only places I know of in this area that doesn't cost a small fortune (relative to other Midtown sit down restaurants) or is a tourist trap. That being said, you know what you're getting when you go to a diner and this experience isn't much different. I like the fact that their salads have bell peppers, unlike most other places I've been to. When I went this evening with some friends and my spouse, we didn't feel rushed or like we were an intrusion. The food is still consistent with my previous trips here (pre-remodeling). Great place, loved the location. Lots of waitresses standing in the diner ready to serve you and refill your cup o coffee. I tried their eggs with bacon and sausage, tasty, I liked it. The coffee is good, on the menu they say that is a coffee they brew themselves, judging by the taste it seems to be true. As "dessert" I ordered the pancakes with maple syrup and butter. Loved it. Monday mornings for most people can be painful, but a great breakfast can always make me feel right. Though midtown is my least fave locale for food, it's also where I work. Alas, I found myself searching for some good ol' breakfast in the neighborhood. I hustled a few blocks for The Red Flame, wondering why I had never heard of it before. My nearest diner is 2 blocks away, but I was tired of their inconsistent service. I walked in about 9:20am and was promptly seated. 9:25am my order was taken. By 9:28 my separate ice water, fresh orange juice, then food was delivered.. BAM! Now that's what I call service! I always measure diners based on several classics- corned beef hash, home fries, pancake variety, grilled cheese, milkshakes. Today was going to be corned beef hash. I asked for eggs over easy and they came stacked on top of my meat as I like. I let the yoke run over everything and gobble it all down. Salty enough and perfect. Home fries were just skillet potatoes, which I am not fond of but were still cooked well. My fresh OJ was served in a glass no more than 6oz, but I can't complain about that because I only like a little bit with breakfast anyway. I had asked for my coffee to come "later" and I didn't think the server had heard me when I did. But as soon as my plate was cleared and I was working on my toast (I eat it last with butter and jelly as my "dessert" for breakfast), she swooped by and asked if I was ready for my coffee. Yes! The check was delivered and the whole service took all of 30minutes. I was never rushed, and even got to write this review. Monday morning win!
