Three of us stopped into the Red Flame for breakfast today in NYC. We stopped here based on the suggestion of a friend. And it was real close to our hotel near Times Square. We all ordered omelettes. Mine was Ham with Muenster. Table service was speedy and cordial. Food preparation and delivery was amazingly fast. The omelettes were decent as were the hash browns. Coffee refills were slow and a bit hard to signal a server for more. In all, it was a decent American breakfast served amazingly fast. read more

Four of us visited for breakfast the week before Christmas. We waited only a few minutes for a booth. Waitpersons were good and helped each other out. It was busy but they did a great job of getting people's orders and food out quickly. Everything we ordered was tasty - pancake platter is huge - 3 pancakes and a pile of bacon. I came here today with my friend Andrea G for lunch. Thank god the hostess takes down your name and all parties have to be present in order for them to seat you at a table or booth. We were able to grab a two seater booth by the door and my colleague and his friend was actually sitting across from us lol We didn't even bother looking at the menu and ordered right away. We actually ended up here twice during a recent stay in NYC. Located just a few minutes walk from Times Square, you will find The Red Flame on 44th Street, near 6th Avenue. Looking much like the quintessential east coast diner, The Red Flame was a great place to grab a quick bite to eat at a reasonable price. (+) Food was solid, if not great. On the first visit I had a fat, juicy, and tasty burger. Very well cooked and very filling and satisfying. The next time I opted for a cheese omelette, which was a bit runny and bland. Not terrible, just nothing noteworthy. (+) Service wasn't over-the-top friendly, but also very solid. Like I said, think low key. I did enjoy how they would walk around just topping off everyone's coffee. Very nice touch and gave it an old school cafe feel! (+) Considering the location, the prices were very reasonable. After all, The Red Flame is located in a VERY touristy part of NYC so anything that wasn't price gouge-y was a welcome option. (-) Seating was a bit cramped and claustrophobic, but it wasn't too bad. It's a diner in Manhattan. For what it is, 5 stars. The parents and I waddled in shortly before 5pm on Thanksgiving eve to get outta the rain. We were allowed to seat ourselves and we were promptly given menus and water. The waitress was polite and efficient. If you stick with diner fare, it's good! Tuna salad on toast- hefty portion with a pickle and slaw, no complaints. BLT on toast- plenty of yummy bacon and tomato. Dad got ravioli because he's nuts- he loved it. His side salad was simple but fresh, crisp veg. The fries were hot and well fried but unsalted. 3 meals, 2 teas and a soda- just under 50 before tip. We had a wonderful lunch here today. The staff was incredibly gracious, professional and overall accomadating My wife and I along with our small dog were exhausted and in need of a cool beverage and get off our feet for a bit. They offered lovely outdoor seating and dogs welcome. Our server Charlie brought my dog a big bowl of ice water. He was an instant hit with Luka. We had delicious wraps and had a wonderful afternoon. Met a friend for coffee early this week - place seemed clean, well lit, decent service, even solicitous. Typical diner, but perhaps a bit nicer. My friend, a man, was seated by himself in one of the larger booths directly near the door, many booths and tables and also the counter had patrons, but the place was not entirely full. The next day - arranged to meet another friend later in the day - at 4 pm. Place was VERY empty. My friend is heavy set - so I asked for a larger booth. They would NOT seat me in a larger booth - since I arrived first and was alone with ten minutes to spare. I noted to the waitress and hostess that the place was almost entirely empty - Still - The answer was NO. While I waited for ten minutes in a smaller booth - No water was offered - no coffee - no order taken - and I was completely ignored. As soon as my friend arrived outside - WE LEFT - and I shall not return to a place where they will singly seat a man - but not a woman. Misogynist policy. read more

Tables were set up so most seating could view the passers by on the street. Went for breakfast on a weekend and had a simple breakfast sandwich and some good coffee. It's nice to have options when dining in Midtown. If I want a leisurely breakfast or brunch, with fancy Benedicts, 90 minutes of unlimited mimosas, etc., there are plenty of places I can go. If I want good, basic, food - okay, let's just say it - diner type - there places like Red Flame. It's a diner with a face-lift pleasant to look at, comfortable to be seated, and food that comes out quickly, hold the fanciness. Today it was breakfast. I opted to stay away from the dozen or so specialty omelets and go for traditional, i.e., the Lumberman's pancake breakfast, standard fair with bacon and eggs. The 3 pancakes were okay, slightly chewy, accompanied by tons of breakfast syrup. The eggs were somewhat bland, the bacon was good. Someone else at the table did order an omelet, which was reasonable in size. But the home fries looked really unappetizing, still pale white in color, no hint of brown. Then again, I'm not here for presentation. The first cup of coffee came out quickly. The food came out quickly. The first refill of coffee didn't come by until I was almost finished with my meal. But everyone here is always busy, working at a breakneck pace, sort of like a well-oiled machine. Or maybe they use lard, I don't know. read more

Food was excellent for what you expect. Typical diner food with a little extra. Service was good. Food was brought out on time and the server even took the time to split the bill for us. We were a party of 9, my cousins were visiting from out of town with their mom and my other aunt as well and some friends and my cousin's husband, so we settled on a place that could seat us all in midtown Manhattan. My bill for one Heineken and a bison burger with onion rings came out to less than $32. So I went down to the cashier and made change with the intent of leaving $38 with my bill. I left it and also my aunt's bill and cash with the server directly, not on the table. We're all outside on the street when the hostess comes out telling me that I only left $18. I was shocked and appalled at the accusation that I didn't leave enough for my bill and tip. My aunt, who was the only other one in our party who paid cash, was also told she didn't leave enough either. I'm 34 years old. I've worked as a server and my brother worked in the industry as well for over 8 years. Not leaving enough on the bill is disgusting to me and I have yet to walk out on a bill or a tip where I dine. I was sure I left enough money because I started the night with $200 in my pocket and when I recounted I had $162 left. To also accuse not one, but two people of the same stunt is ridiculous because grown adults don't try to stiff people on a bill at a restaurant. I angrily left $10 on the counter and said I'd never go back there again, and I'm writing this review to inform whoever takes the time to read it that, if you decide to go to this circus of a restaurant, you should only pay with debit or credit. Don't trust them with your cash, they'll try to rob you. read more

Some people had to wait, but they do a good job cleaning up when people leave and getting the next party seated - ordered quickly and food came very fast - lots of options for breakfast....we ordered the pancakes with bananas and the French toast with sausage -- pancakes were fluffy and delicious -- French toast was also good but came with no extras, just the French toast. Any toppings you had to put on yourself - you pay at the counter on the way out The Not So Good: - expensive for a no-frills breakfast; for these prices I would at least expect powdered sugar or whipped cream on the French toast - French toast was a little under cooked - gives off a greasy spoon vibe - food was good, but not spectacular - took some time to get the check because staff was busy helping other people - hard to flag down the water guy to get a refill Bottom Line: This really is not a bad place to eat and the food was tasty enough. There are probably better options out there that will embellish the food a little so it feels like you are paying for something special. The corned beef hash is satisfying and filling, the eggs benedict cooked nicely, good pancakes and french toast. The only quibble is the coffee: cups are small but you do get unlimited refills. It's a rainy day in NYC and the hubby and I just had to come back as they have the best coffee in this area. We sat in the same booth that we sat in the first time we came here, and ordered a grilled cheese, fries, french onion soup and of course, coffee! My friend and I were looking for a place that had scrambled eggs nearby the hotel we were at, and this was the only place that was affordable. This city needs more breakfast places, seriously. But we luckily placed our orders by the third time she came back. I ordered hot cocoa without whiped cream, and I saw they used instant hot cocoa. I should have stuck with water but it was cold outside. The worst part is that the hot cocoa was lukewarm. Desperate times lead to desperate measures. It was raining hard, and I wasn't in the mood for the overpriced tourist traps surrounding my hotel near Times Square. It was also about 11:30PM. Oh yeah...I was feeling kinda grungy in my Dockers khakis and five o'clock shadow. And my umbrella was missing two spokes. I just didn't think I was fit to be an upscale dining customer. Sounds like a Red Flame Coffee House kinda night. Bright lights. Beige naugahyde offset by orange walls. Oh yes, this is your standard grade coffee shop alright. It was still as a tomb at that hour, and there was no hostess jumping up to greet me with open arms. One of the staff eventually found me perusing the laminated menu, and I got cocky and ordered the $12.95 Open-Faced Steak Sandwich (see my photo). They used steak strips piled on a soaked piece of bread with the lettuce and tomato standing guard to the side. It was impossible to pick up, so I used my battered silverware to gnaw my way through it. It served the purpose of a late-night meal for a thoughtless traveler who lost track of time. The steak strips were not terrible, and the fries were plentiful. No real complaints, just standard eats when you're in a pinch. Let's just say it's not the type of place that you really seek out in New York. Unless you're cold...and it's late...and you didn't shave...and you're soaking wet from that damn umbrella you got at Walgreen's for $7.50. Gee, maybe it is my kind of place. If you want to pay $60.00 for breakfast, there plenty of high rated places for that within a half a mile from here. But if you want good food at a good price, this is the place. I would say that the place is still four stars overall, just as I rated it 7 years ago. The food is 3-4 stars and should be improved a bit, especially for the price. It's gone up a lot and I think the value for the money has gone down a bit. But I am keeping the overall 4 stars because it is very clean. The coffee is kind of watery so it's not the best diner coffee around, so it does feel like they are cutting some corners. It's not the best food and it is expensive. And they have that annoying 4% credit card fee now, even though at their high prices (even for NY standards) they should really just stop with the nickel and diming. I don't go back to places with that fee and find it's an opportunity to try new places to see who is doing it and who isn't. Example wrap sandwiches are small and I recall were about $19 with fries. So it's a very average food experience but is convenient and clean. read more

For the past two years or so, the store front of Red Flame Diner Coffee Shop was obscured by scaffolding, hiding what was already a difficult to find restaurant thanks to the flat shape of the side of this building. When it reopened recently with a whole new interior, I knew I had to check it out (sans scaffolding). The interior is bright, wide open and modern looking with some retro touches such as the green on the seats. As 80's music played in the background, my girlfriend and I were allowed to pick our own booth, always a nice touch. A waiter materialized almost immediately and our orders were taken very quickly. I ordered the chicken souvlaki salad platter. Considering what area of Manhattan you're in, this order gives you a *ton* of food. Big chunks of juicy chicken on top of a well grilled pita with a large salad on the side complete with onions, feta, peppers and cucumber. I knew even as the food was put down that it was going to be more than I could finish in one sitting. The salad was fresh, crunchy and tasty. The cheese was wonderfully salty and worked well with the greens. A splash of olive oil and balsamic completed the salad. The pita was grilled perfectly, with a crisp exterior and a soft, chewy interior. The main feature was of course the chicken, which turned out wonderfully juicy and seasoned very well. As if the chicken wasn't good enough, the Tzatziki sauce included with it was awesome! Full of garlic flavor and creaminess, this sauce was amazing and I asked for a "to go" bit of it with my left overs! On the way out, I noticed that the cashier's table had a good old fashioned mint ball that you flip to get mints out - I love the small details. And right next to it? MINT toothpicks! This is something I used to see a lot, but is a vanishing touch in restaurants. It was really nice to see something relatively "old skool" in such a recently refurbished setting. I think these words sum up my feelings about this place best, as I left the place I said to my girlfriend "Oh yeah, we're coming back." read more

The staff at the Hyatt Times Square directed me to The Red Flame as a place to eat breakfast. The place was pretty busy on a cold weekday morning, but I managed to get a table for one immediately. Ordered their Eggs Corned Beef Benedict - which is basically run-of-the-mill canned corned beef over English muffins with eggs and Hollandaise sauce, plus a side of breakfast potatoes. The English muffins were under toasted. As in almost untoasted. I basically scraped off the hash and eggs and pushed the English muffins to the side and ate the eggs and corned beef hash. The breakfast potatoes tasted like nothing. They needed something - seasoning big time. I ignored the potatoes as well after tasting them. Coffee was good. Service was good. read more
