We live a few blocks away and have eaten here many times through the past 10 yrs. The breakfast "slammer" is my favorite. Tonite we are going for the chicken fried steak, another favorite. My wife likes the catfish. Good salads. I like the Knotty Pine too but they do not serve dinner and they a lot smaller. In all the times I have eaten there I cannot remember being treated bad by the waitresses, ever! They are always friendly and I make sure I leave them a decent tip. I've been coming here since I was born and it's very comfortable feeling. The servers are super friendly and great. The food is hit and miss sometimes. I've been getting dry over cooked stuff lately but usually it is really good. I used to get the French dip sandwich one a week. I LOVE the salad. Great food, horrible service . As a former waitress , I'm very "picky" of the way a waitress or waiter handles himself . We were seated almost immediately, which was the highlight of the service . After our drinks came promptly which was great as well.. But after all that it started going down hill she only came to check if we needed anything once and because it was kind of a slow day she was no where to be found. All help was in the front chit chatting amongst each other . As the same waitress seated other guess nearby she paced by and mumbled "I'll get you another drink " (with an attitude ) not that we were asking for it rudely or at all for that matter. she came back pacing (as if the restaurant was packed..which it wasn't ) and set the cup on the edge of the table nearly dropping it . Meanwhile the empty glass was left there. Then came the food she was good (asking if we needed any condiments before leaving) then again she vanished . Came back halfway through our meal & dropped the ticket on the table and walked away. She didn't even let us finish eating nor did she ask if we needed anything else . Unless she was planning on letting us order without the charge, it was extremely rude . I don't get to come to this place very often because it is on the opposite side of town. I forget how much I like this place. This is one of those places where you can definitely see the regulars and the staff treats the newcomers just as nice and friendly as the regulars. The menu is extensive and the portions are great. They have a good sized kids menu and serve breakfast all day. Most of the options are what you expect for a typical diner. My oldest ordered a kids pizza with fries and again he is picky and was not expecting a French bread pizza but he ate it anyways and actually enjoyed it. My daughter ordered the pancake combo and they easily substituted more eggs for the meat offered for no charge, a plus in my book. I settled on a simple grilled cheese sandwich with fries on sourdough bread and loved that they used a seasoned garlic butter when grilling it. I also added a salad which was average but they have good ranch dressing that tastes better than anything that comes out of a bottle. I will hit this place up anytime I need to eat when I'm in the northeast side of town simply because of the classic hearty portions and the friendly staff. read more

First and Foremost it is not OILDALE get it right folks. Most people think anything north of town is Oildale no get yourself educated it is considered North of the River. The staff is always friendly. The food is always good and the quantities are very fair. I am a fan of chicken fried steak but most places serve the toughest cut of meat which ruins the meal. Sugar mill has another option chicken fried chicken, get the best of both or you can order the old style as well. The salads are good size and the dressing blue cheese tastes as if it is home made. I think for the price of the items and the quantity of the food given it is a very good deal. I don't think I have ever left without taking a to go home box. read more

"child-friendly"? so much so that they allowed a toddler to play a LOUD cartoon on a tablet at breakfast one time. Rude. My neighbors and I all agree that this place is a last resort for a good meal. Our family often has Sunday breakfast here. We usually have a party of at least 7. The service and food are always the same; great for a coffee shop! I always get the chili verde breakfast burrito. So I never complain about my food, I'll eat pretty much any food. Me and my wife came here to eat. And we have been a couple other times. Ordered food and waited. Food was brought and it was wrong order for me. I ate it anyways and didn't say anything. But after about 5 bites of food. I pulled a long blonde hair out of my sausage... we waited for our waitress and she was no where to be found, after about 10 mins we flagged down a bus boy and asked for a manager or our waitress that was serving us. Older gentlemen came by said he was the manager. He asked what was wrong, I told him as a joking matter I would like food, hold the hair. He looked at it and said where's the hair? I grabbed the long blonde hair and showed him. He rolled his eyes and said that's a small hair. Like I was suppose to eat it? He then walked off, didn't say sorry and acted like it was my fault? After that our original waitress came back and asked if we wanted our ticket as my wife was still eating, obviously we just are some sort of nasty scum people and they want us out, And she didn't say sorry or anything once again. Acted like it was my fault? I paid for my wife's meal and I didn't get my breakfast this morning. I WILL NEVER GO TO THIS PLACE AGAIN. And the staff is ridiculous. I rather go to Spencer's instead. I love the chicken fried liver too. Yes it's good. drizzled with some A-1 steak sauce. It's good vittles. stick to your bones country food. I didn't have a grandma who made food this good. This is the one place my almost 2 yr old son will actually EAT at!! So for that reason I must give them an all 5 five star :) he is a picky eater and eats like a bird but anytime we come to the sugar mill our little man eats away! I always get the cat fish dinner and I love it!! Sometimes we get waitress' that aren't rude but no exactly friendly either and then other times we get a younger girl and she is outstanding!
