While visiting SF this last weekend we wanted something that spoke to our souls. We were staying just up the street and walked over to get a late dinner. This was our first time and we will definitely be back. When you walk up you can see right into the kitchen. There is a narrow walk way to the back where they maybe have 7 tables of different sizes. We did have to wait just a few minutes to be seated. Once we sat down we already knew what we wanted to try because we had Yelped it before choosing them for dinner. We ordered the cucumber salad, chicken Tom Kha, the veggie spring rolls and some steamed rice to share. The food came out quick and hot. The cucumber salad was crisp and full of flavor, spring rolls were crunchy and you could taste the freshness of all the veggies inside. The Tom Kha was rich and creamy. Not the greatest location but it is the best Thai restaurant in a 3 block vicinity to Union Square. The service is great but the restaurant itself looked unclean and most definitely smelled unclean, similar to that of bleach but a couple of days old. I ordered a Guay Tiew Nua Sub and a Pad Thonglor with a side of roti. The guay tiew was really yummy, definitely no complaints there. The Pad Thonglor was also pretty decent until I decided to have a bite of the Kabocha squash and it had gone rancid. We wanted to be considerate and just leave lol but ordering more food did sound tempting. I ordered the red curry and the curry had a lot of flavor and a nice thick consistency. The coconut rice was really good too. I will for sure come back next time I'm craving thai food in SF. If I had to say one negative thing is the space is super small so the tables fill up quickly sometimes causing a long wait but its worth it in my opinion and they put orders out quickly so you're waiting on the people eating not the staff. read more

Wow, y'all gave this place an overall 4 1/2 stars -- I must have gone on a bad night, or picked the wrong items. I consider myself a Thai foodie and have been to a few dozen Thai restaurants in the Bay Area. I just came out of a show downtown and was craving Thai food -- so who was open late? Discovered on Yelp that not only was Thornglor open late, it had some great reviews. So, I go in there and am immediately shown a table by the young woman server, great -- but she brings me no menu, nothing. And then I sit at the table and wait ... and wait ... and wait. Nothing. Finally, as one of the male servers was walking by the table I had to say, please, anyone available to give me a menu and place an order with? He acted surprised and apologized and got me a menu and some water. Ok, good, thanks -- I guess he thought the female server was taking care of me? I ordered a Thai Iced Tea, which was good. But that's where it ended. I ordered a Chicken Satay, which took quite a bit of time to arrive. The peanut sauce was good ... the chicken itself was like rubber! I mean it had this weird, horrible texture, it was almost like I was eating raw chicken -- but I looked at it and, no, it appeared cooked. I don't know how they prepared this chicken but it wasn't good. I sent it back and they offered me another but I just asked if they'd take it off the bill, which they did. Next comes out the main dish I ordered: Cashew Chicken. Totally not what I was expecting. I've had Cashew Chicken at so many other Thai places, and this was something way out of left field. Best way I can describe it is like it was their version -- Thongor's version, not any other Thai restaurant's version -- of Orange Chicken. Can't even describe the taste ... odd. And it was WAY overfried and way too sweet. It was like they took little strips of chicken and dunked them in a huge amount of batter and fried 'em. Lots of batter and sugar, and not enough chicken. I ate a few pieces, but just couldn't finish it. This is a restaurant that needs better management. The chef and cooks need to be better overseen in what they're producing, and the wait staff needs to be better trained, and particularly the young woman with the glasses (unless it's not her job to give menus and take orders, although I saw her doing a lot). I think one of the problems may be too much focus on their phone and delivery orders and not enough on the customers eating in. Folks who enjoy this, great. Decided to give this Thai restaurant a try after reading a fellow yelper's review! Definitely a hidden gem here in the city. I have to admit Thonglor offers everything I normally like to order plus chef's special items that are unique and not offered at other Thai restaurants! My fiancé and I ordered 5 items: pad Thai, raad na, lychee red curry with duck, BBQ chicken and plain roti. We also got Thai iced tea with Yelp check-in. Pad Thai: people say if the pad Thai is good then the restaurant is good! I can not agree more! The pad Thai was flavorful and nicely cooked to perfection! It for sure tastes authentic! Raad na: not every Thai restaurant offers this dish and I'm surprised Thonglor actually serves this dish. This essentially is a Ho fun noodle dish in gravy with your choice of protein. I love how they're generous with the gravy because I love my noodles extra saucy for this dish specifically! Must try!!! BBQ chicken: the sauce that this dish came with was good! I can't pinpoint what's in the sauce but I know they used lime and chili! Very good! However, the chicken was a bit over cooked so the meat was tough. This dish would've been good if the meat wasn't so tough! Lychee red curry with duck: Another must try! This is a chef's special item. They were generous with the duck meat and lychee fruit. They use whole lychee pieces in the curry. You can pick the spice level and we chose mild, this is Thai mild but for us, it was a bit spicy! Not bad! If we got hot, it might be too spicy for us. I suggest ordering the mild if anyone is interested in trying this dish! This happens to be everyone's favorite dish last night! Lastly we got a side of roti to dip with the red curry! The roti was nice and flaky, but was a bit oily as it was deep fried. Unfortunately the roti broke into little pieces and formed a lot of crumbs at the bottom. Nonetheless it was still good with the curry! Service: Excellent! We actually attempted to place an order online and was not able to redeem the free drink from the check-in so we called the restaurant and the guy that we spoke with was very nice and said we can just order the food online and he will add the drink for us even though the free check-in drink is for dine-in only. So we attempted to place the order but the app was not working so we called the restaurant again and the same guy picked up. We ended up placing the order over the phone and paid once we picked the food up. We mentioned we were going to pick up at 4:30pm, but ended up arriving late so around 5pm, he called us to let us know the food was ready for pick up! No other restaurant will go out of their way to call us when the food is ready! Huge plus for Thonglor! Overall, everything we ordered was flavorful and satisfying! I love this place. Hands down the best Thai restaurant in all of sf! I put everyone on this and can't recommend it enough. Epitome of a hole in the wall. My bf and I were looking for places to eat that were open late and this was one of the options. Near Union Square. Parking can be difficult but since we went around 9-10pm, it was empty. But other times when I've gone during the day, right when the open, and even at 8pm, you'll have to circle the block a few times. Free street parking on Sundays though. This place is so small. I've actually never eaten inside but have always taken my food to-go. Lowkey the tables are so close to one another I get anxiety if I'll be able to fit through, cause ya girl ain't skinny. So to save myself embarrassment, I just take it to go and either eat it at golden gate park, twin peaks, or just somewhere nearby. I actually prefer that cause I love sf weather. Also since it's by Union square you can just walk there and eat and enjoy the scenery or people watch. I also hate coffee but I'm obsessed with their Thai iced coffee!! So much so that I don't even bother getting their Thai tea. Make sure your order is correct when you get their Thai iced coffee to-go cause it's happen twice where I've ordered the coffee and was given just a reg Thai iced tea. My go to is the pad-see-ew and the bbq pork fried rice. Taste the same each time and does not disappoint. Skip the paid thai cause it's nothing special but do go for the red curry. It's got a nice kick to it. I appreciate that it comes with rice. The pricing is average for a Thai restaurant. For 3 entrees we paid like $60. You must order the pineapple fried rice, the golden raisins and cashews add a whole new dimension to the dish. The red curry was very flavorful and paired perfectly with the brown rice. Tried out this restaurant because a man who worked at the Union Square Marriott where we were staying recommended it for good local Thai food. It was very disappointing. The food we ordered- the Pad Thai, Pad Sew Ew and Hot and spicy soup were all very mediocre if that. The noodle dishes were drenched in sauce, not in a good way, and neither dish tasted like that traditional flavor. I couldn't even eat the food after trying it so I left there hungry and unsatisfied. The pricing was also too high for the quality. Left there paying $65 for three items that were not good. Really the only thing I enjoyed was the Stash Jasmine hot tea! Cozy & casual Thai spot that's affordable. They have maybe 6 tables inside but there wasn't a wait when my friend and I came on Friday 6:30 pm. The food is great, on the spicy side which I like. We shared the pad kee mao which was very garlicky, and also the green curry which had a good amount of protein and veggies. Both were good portion sizes. I was passing through Union Square around lunchtime and decided to grab some takeout. Ever since the pandemic began a ton of restaurants have really focused on the takeout/delivery game, but not all restaurant food travels well. Thankfully theirs does! Appetizer Combo: Very filling, even more so than an entree, since there are so many deep fried things. The fish cakes were memorable because they were so dense and flavor packed, I swore this was pork sausage! Speaking of pork, the pork skewers (moo ping) were fine. Nice char and especially good with that funky spicy dipping sauce that had a major fish sauce aroma. The prawns in a blanket were pleasant, always a favorite of mine at Thai restaurants since I love the long crunch wrapper to shrimp ratio. In comparison, the vegetarian roll was kinda blah, lots of clear noodles. And the fried tofu was also not that memorable. Chicken Larb: Tangy ground chicken with a healthy dose of red onion chunks to give it even more zing. Served with some quasi-lettuce cups, since it's more like large curved slices of lettuce. Some will hold the ground meat while others are too flat and limp. Seems like it would be keto, if you're into that sort of thing, but it tastes good even to people who don't give a dime about keto. Pad Thai w/ Shrimp: Had all the standard components including plump shrimp, deep fried tofu slices, salty & sweet noodles and fresh bean sprouts. Since pretty much every Thai restaurant serves this dish, there's a lot of places to compare it against. I still like Osha's version more, even from the their To Go stand in One Market. Was craving some Thai food nearby and Thonglor had some pretty good reviews. Overall, the experience was mid. My boyfriend and I both ordered the pad kee mao, and we also ordered crispy tofu to try. While the flavors of the pad kee mao were solid, the noodles were too oily and my boyfriend had a hard time finishing the dish because of the oiliness. The meat was also ground meat (both for beef and chicken), which was interesting but not necessarily preferable to whole pieces (Too small to fully enjoy). The crispy tofu was also okay; my boyfriend loved the crispiness, but thought the sauce that accompanied it could have been better. Furthermore, customer service was rather curt and the place itself was cramped. Nothing to write home about. At a similar price point, I've had better Thai food elsewhere. Maybe the items we ordered were just average, but probably will not be coming back again, purposefully at least. read more

The staff was very friendly, and we were able to put in our order for takeout fairly quickly. It was a Thursday night and they were super busy but still managed to get us our order in 25 minutes. If you're looking for seating I'd suggest getting there early because there's extremely minimal space for that. We brought our food back to the apartment and the food ended up being delicious. I got the tofu and vegetable pad Thai and my boyfriend got the bbq chicken. We also ended up adding 2 Thai teas. The tofu was just how I love it, a little spongey but fried to perfection. I wanted some boat noodles later at night, and Google maps led me to this hole-in-the-wall near Union Square. I was intrigued by the lychee duck curry, so I got this dish in addition to my combination beef noodle soup. The duck curry was the better dish. It was creamy, fragrant, sweet, and the duck was moist, fatty, and each bite had a little bit of bounce (if that makes sense). The combination beef soup had a base that tasted like boat noodles. They give a lot of stewed beef, which is great if you like stewed meats. I generally don't love stewed meats, so this bowl was largely abandoned in favor of the curry. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this place. Wait time can be a little long if you plan to dine-in as the space is small. read more

TL;DR - Extremely delicious and authentic! This place is AMAZING. I cannot believe I stumbled upon this when going to a concert at August Hall. This restaurant is small - it is basically a size of a hall way but do not let that fool you. The food will make up for it - and honestly it feels like a restaurant in NYC in Hell's Kitchen. The Thai tea was served quickly and flavorful. The roti prata is crispy (a little too crispy) and perfectly suited to dip into the curry. The curry itself is extremely decadent. I love that they use eggplant and tons of other vegetables in the dish. We also got Pad Prik Sod with brown rice (I'm pretty sure that's what we got) and my husband loved it. Overall, fantastic food. I am in town for work and was so excited for some good Thai food, but this just didn't hit the spot :( the pad Thai didn't have peanuts or lime (I've never had a pad Thai without peanuts?!) and some of the noodles didn't have sauce on them. We visited this place on a whim ... and for a small little Thai restaurant which are some of our favorites (those little hole in the wall restaurants), it blew away expectations! We had the sticky rice with mango a beef student noodle soup and some fried rice switch was a fusion between Malaysian and Thai food along with a couple drinks and of course a Thai beer. Everything was better than expected and this restaurant would do well in any city in the world. We came right before their lunchtime closing and saw about five people being turned away which was unfortunate because they just had to wait another hour to get to experience what we just did. It was as if she was waiting for the opportunity to snap at me because she ignored me until I went to look for my order. DoorDash review. Ordered last month and food was so delicious. Added it to the list to see if it hits the spot round 2. So we ordered it again tonight and damn. This Thai food is great. The pad see ew has that kinda smoked sweetness to it. The yellow curry hits all the flavor spots. Crab fried rice with big chunks of crab. The chicken larb is so good and almost refreshing to the palette. The mint lemonade was so hard to stop once you started drinking. 10/10!!! read more

We went to this place 2 hours before a show across the street and it was busy! It was first come first serve for this tiny place. It was a single file line alongside the kitchen which was torture as we smelled sauteed Thai spices. We were simple and ordered 2 Pad Thai since we didn't want anything to go. It was a large plate but it was too good to not finish. The service was pretty fast which was greatly appreciated! A new favorite! The green curry and pineapple fried rice are great. I had enough for leftovers and the price point is not too bad at $15-17 for entrees. There's limited seating, so take out might be the best option. The line wasn't too bad but the amazing smell of the food is enough to keep you waiting. Every single item that came out of the kitchen past my table because we were right in the entranceway. And every single item left me an Envy of the table it was being delivered to! The food at The Thonglor is absolutely amazing! I had the Lychee Curry with Roast Duck... Boneless roast duck, Lychee fruit, tomatoes, bell peppers and Thai basil leaves in a red curry served with rice. It was delicious! It was spicy enough to make my nose run just a little bit and had a lingering heat instead of upfront which helped to savor every flavor in the dish! This place is a little tiny hole in the wall. If they have a dozen tables I would be surprised. I wish I had more days so that I could have more meals here! I look forward to coming back and enjoying more food from The Thonglor. read more
