Very small authentic Thai place near Union Square. Seating is cramped and kitchen is so small it's amazing they can cook food so fast out of it. We got the Poh Tak soup ( $17) which had a clear non coconut based broth based on ginger and lemongrass. Quite unusual. Not the best value at $17. The Guay Tiew Lord ($16) was similar to Pad Kee Mao. Not really sure what the difference is. This is a great dish for the price. Almost double the size of many Thai restaurants noodle dishes. The green curry ($15) was good. Regular rice is included which is nice. Often it is Ala cart at $3 or so extra. Taste was good. It was not made with the cheap curry bases. Lots of nice veggies. However it was just a bit too watery for my taste. I prefer it thicker and more creamy. For some strange reason they do not have chili oil or chili flakes. This place has very few seating tables and we had to wait for an hour on a Sunday early evening to get a table after we were initially told wait time was 30 mins. Irrespective, it was worth the wait. We got their tom yum soup with veggies, chicken satay and spring rolls for apps. All these items were flavorful, warm and perfect. They have the best satay we have tasted in a Thai place. For the main course we got the pad thai with shrimps, basil fried rice, a veggie dish with tofu and red curry with chicken. Everything was packaged nicely and tasted great! I ordered the Roti Gaeng under Chef's Special. This dish is a good bang for your buck if you enjoy dipping the crispy roti pancakes into curry. You have a choice between red, green, and yellow curry, choice of protein, and a side of roti pancakes for $16-$19 (depending on protein). If you order the curry alone (comes with rice), it's $15 but the crispy roti alone is $4.50 vs the rice for $2.50. Roti Gaeng is quite a deal if you were planning to pick red, green, or yellow. I ended up just cooking some instant rice in the microwave with my curry. Yums. I ordered the Green curry and it it came with basil, chili, eggplant, string beans, bell pepper and bamboo shoots. I don't normally like eggplant, but theirs was cooked perfectly where it wasn't too mushy. The green curry was more mild spicy than spicy, but it was still delicious and hit the spot. My friend and I visited on a Saturday night, and it was packed! It's a first come first serve basis, and there is a waitlist. If you can, go early! All of the tables were filled so we waited until one opened. Despite the small space, it felt homey. The yellow lighting and tight area made it feel as though we were dining with everyone around us. Now, the food. We ordered pad thai, panang curry, and the yellow curry. It came out steaming hot, and SO good! It was really fast, and I think we got our order within five minutes of telling them. I LOVED the panang curry, perfect for the now chilly San Francisco nights. Would highly recommend! 5 stars I absolutely love The Thonglor! Location: it's very convenient. Within a 5 minute walk of union square. It's kind of hard to see at first because it is very hole in the wall but it is across the street from Pinecrest Diner. We got there around 1 PM on a Sunday and waited about 20 minutes for a table. If you're driving street parking is available but pretty tough to find because it's usually full. But there's a lot of paid lots that you can find within walking distance! Service: When you walk in you have to talk to the innermost server by the cashbox to be seated or place a take out order. The servers are pretty nice and everything is very efficient. When you place your order the food comes out pretty quickly and the inside is so small it is pretty easy to flag down a server! Food: the food here is absolutely the star of the show. Pad see ew: it's so saucy and savory absolutely delicious. There's just a hint of spice, but not enough to overpower the dish. Pad see ew is my go to at any Thai restaurant and they did this version justice. Thonglor curry: Also delicious. There is a bit more of a kick and is a runnier curry. The squash is melt in your mouth and all the other veggies still have a good crunch to give it some texture. The chicken is well cooked and there is a hint of sweetness that just makes this dish so tasty. Tom kha: very comforting. Not the best Tom kha I've ever had, but it's very creamy (a bit milkier than other Tom Kha's I've had) and has a good acidic kick. They take both cash and card/Apple Pay and it is the same price either way. In the past we've also gotten the lychee duck curry and the panang curry and it has all been delicious. Overall since moving to the city this has been one of my absolute favorite spots. The food is always so fresh and delicious with decently big portions and a fair price. Best curry I've ever had? Perhaps very much likely .. I came here because I saw the Lychee Roasted Duck Curry and wanted to try it because it was unique. Theirs hours say 11am but when I came at 11:30am.. they still were not open and told me to wait 10min... I left because I had to go somewhere and came back at 4 when they were supposed to open back up but still had to wait 10min. Lol. The restaurant itself was tiny and had about 7 tables. I could see them make their food fresh and curry. Curry back in Houston sometimes gets pre-made and freeze so when you order, they will defrost it and serve it to you but I could see the curry here being made in a big pot. The staff here is so nice as well as the people I've met in SF like the ones who sat at the table next to me ordered pad Thai and another beef dish that smelled so good. The red curry was amazing. Full of flavors and had a perfect balance. Idk how but the lychee just worked. The roasted duck was tender and very good.. it didn't have a gamey smell like when most duck is prepared. Really a bit of a hole in the wall. Super unassuming exterior, situated next to a Jack in the Box, and a really tiny interior. It's kept really clean though, and service was overall friendly. I got the beef combo soup noodles, and it was delicious. Super rich beefy flavor in the broth, and they give a very healthy amount of meat. All the beef is super tender, and you can tell it's been slow cooked for a long time. Noodles are cooked well too. The broth is maybe a bit on the sweet side though.
