As a vegan, I love places like this that let me indulge in all the junk I used to eat, but I also hate places like this for having enormous menus full of things I can order. Coming here stresses me out a little bit. What do you mean I have choices besides a dry salad with a side of potatoes? But really, though -- Wayward is a very unpretentious cafe with a wonderful selection of diner staples made vegan. It's a cheery, open space that always brightens my mood a bit. The menu is truly enormous, and I haven't worked my way very far through it, but every breakfast dish I've had here has been delightful. In addition to veggie mainstays like tofu scramble and biscuits with mushroom gravy, Wayward offers up omelets, eggs Benedict, and even a Monte Cristo made with the power of plants. I really like the farmer's hash, a curried tofu scramble loaded with veggies, and have always really enjoyed the hash browns. They've also recently added brunch cocktails to their menu, including an Irish coffee made with Bailey's Almande and coconut whipped cream that is absolutely to die for. I have less experience with the dinner menu, but highly recommend trying out some of the appetizers. They use a god-tier cheese substitute out of Chicago called Teese, which makes the most luscious, pillowy mozzarella wedges imaginable. Lunch and dinner dishes here tend to be kind of expensive while not being a ton of food, but luckily breakfast is served all day. Wayward is one of those rare restaurants that will satisfy pretty much any kind of eater. Bring your veggie friends, your omni friends, or just yourself for some comforting self-care food. read more

My first time here after hearing great things was last night. We came in Saturday at 5:30ish and they were not packed but seemed a little busy. We were seated rather quickly. Our server was nice & friendly. Our food took forever! We were there waiting for dinner at 6:40.. Our first appetizer came quickly though. The Wayward sampler: The mozzarella was the best!!!! The buffalo chiggen was okay. But the sweet potato fries were BURNT so crispy. Now the other appetizer.. French tickler: French toast strips were amazing!! Now Dinner: Kid disliked her chiggen nuggets breading, probably too burnt. Alfredo was a hit! Bikini bowl - terrible, so plain. So we were disappointed. Especially the wait time. Chicken wings, nachos, tater tots, mozzarella sticks--most things on the menu are fried or smothered in cheese or gravy or breaded... Basically, everything is over-the-top, often in a very good way. Went with my family the other day and we got the "Chiggen Salad", tater tots, a Reuben sandwich, and the biscuits and gravy. Salad: delicious, absolutely no complaints! Sandwich: also one of the best reubens I've ever had. The only disappointment were the biscuits and gravy. We had just been to Cafe Flora a few days before, and these ones fell flat by comparison. Alright, I am shook. First, I have been slowly working my way towards complete veganism for a little while now. I've tried three dishes now and feel compelled to tell you how amazing they were. My husband and I got takeout over the weekend. He got the hillbilly omelet and I got the biscuits and gravy. They were both fantastic! Meat substitutes will forever be a challenge of texture if you go into it with "like bacon" or "like sausage" expectations. Hold them to their own standard and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Besides that, both meals were amazing and HUGE! We both got two servings out of our meals. But... then I couldn't help myself and ordered there again this morning for myself. And I got what was the most delicious thing I've had in a long time vegan or not. It alone compelled me to review before even trying this place a third time. The Good Morning Crunchwrap. MY GOODNESS! The crunch, texture, complexity, and just in general DELICIOUS flavor was unmatched. The potato's it came with were also incredible and came with a dipping sauce that married well with the spices and flavorings of the Crunchwrap. I'm really excited to explore their other Crunchwraps if the good morning is any indication of the awesomeness of their other varieties. Vegan or not, this place checks all of the boxes for me. A typical diner/cafe menu in vegetarian offerings? Yes please. Breakfast served all day, but not sure about the lunch and dinner items. Wasn't too busy when we showed up at 5:30 on a Saturday and the restaurant was only half full, yet service was slow. Mostly because of the kitchen I believe. Started things off with the appetizer way award sampler. The mozzarella sticks tasted like genuine cheese. Delish. Buffalo "wings" were also really good, but the sweet potatoes fries were too burnt to be good. The French ticklers were phenomenal. So good and everyone loved them. My entree was the fettuccine Alfredo. For a vegetarian item, it was very good. Creamy and flavor was pretty good. Prices are reasonable as well. In my experience I end up spending ~25% more at any given vegetarian/vegan restaurants, so it was a nice surprise to see that prices are comparable to non- veg restaurants. The heaters don't seem to be turned on very high in November/December--we ate with our jackets on because it was quite chilly. Menu is pretty straightforward. They have a lot of options! The Gluten Free options were impressive--lots of choices. Staff is accommodating--I substituted ranch for something else and they were cool about it. Food does take a while to come out because it's made to order I guess. There were very few people dining in and a lot of take out orders. California crunch wrap: nice and crunchy indeed. This place makes my heart sing!!!! It is good for my wallet that I didn't know about it when I lived in Seattle. When we recently visited for four nights, we had breakfast here THREE of the four mornings. And we weren't staying anywhere near Green Lake. It was just THAT good. Totally amazing place. We wanted to try everything on the menu. I really was curious about their protein offerings so tried the "steak" breakfast. I switched out the stuffed potatoes with the garlic greens to make it healthier. This dish also came with a scrambled tofu side. My husband opted for a tempeh dish and my daughter had the "chicken". So we were able to try four different proteins. (My son had the cheeseburger but that was gone in three bites so the rest of us didn't get to try it). I liked the chicken and the tofu scramble the best. The chicken is a lot less like the chicken-less nuggets and more of a fried gluten product (like seitan but not as manipulated). I liked the steak, but it is a big hunk of seitan. What is impressive is that the steak sauce tasted exactly like the real thing. My husband's tempeh dish was also very good. As overjoyed as I was to learn that Wayward had escaped extinction, this restaurant differs from its predecessor in several ways. Not in bad ways, just different. The original Wayward was notable for its huge portions, substantial vegan menu, and innovative execution; the new Wayward seems more restrained on all counts. The brunch menu, for example, is now smaller and more manageable but also somehow less interesting, with fewer brunch classics than before. I tried the Hillbilly Omelet, and frankly, it's not what I remember from similar dishes in the old days, with a somewhat bland execution featuring an "egg" replacement that tastes suspiciously like the store-shelf product "Just Egg"; in contrast, I remember Wayward taking pride in their homemade recipe. Chiggen & Waffle is a ghost of its former self, with the "Chiggen" seemingly a store-bought patty instead of the decedent deep-fried Seitan slab (steak?) that used to adorn their menu. Everything was fine, the service was friendly, and the wait times were manageable. Came here again with some friends to have breakfast/brunch. Wasn't too busy when we went, we were seated quickly but upstairs this time. Nice space upstairs with a good amount of tables. I got the Country Fried Steak.....I dont know how they make this vegan but it was quite delicious! Nice sized piece of "steak", crunchy, crispy, with delicious gravy on top, served with a curry tofu scramble and wonderful hashbrowns. Portion sizes are pretty big so come hungry! One of my friend's got The Farmer's Hash.....that looked good as well, nice & chunky hash with delicious gravy on top with some vegan cheese that comes with plenty of toast. She enjoyed it very much. My buddy, he got the Biscuit Mountain........it was a behemoth of a mountain!!!! The breakfast club was my favorite, especially the Monte Cristo. It was not the normal texture but has a chewy taste that was addicting. The hash brown was crunchy on the outside which is what I like. The Dixie fried was ok. The salad was good, the biscuit was almost cookie like so it was different but in a good way. The biscuit wasn't too dry, like other reviews mentioned. It was the perfect balance between moist and flaky. The hashbrowns were amazing as well! Love having a restaurant where we can feel good about what we're eating. We had about a 15 minute wait on a Sunday for brunch, which was expected. Service was great, except that our table was initially missing one set of silverware and the waiters didn't notice until we called them over a while later.
