My boyfriend and I live in the far NW part of Burque, so eating at Yeller Sub is more of an occasional special treat than a regular occurrence for us, but, from the first time he brought me here, to the sandwich I'm eating as I type, I've never been disappointed. In this review I'll tell you why I feel that way. Service: Everyone (and I do mean everyone) I've ever come in contact with here has been friendly, helpful, patient (I'm a picky eater so I often add or remove ingredients to/from my sandwiches), and happy. I'd even go so far as to describe them as enthusiastic. On one occasion we were helped by a cashier whom I'm pretty sure was in the middle of her first day. Despite our slightly convoluted order she was great, and went back over it with us at the end to make sure it was correct. Food: The sandwiches are great, they bake their own bread, so it's fresh everyday. The chips are also made in store, and they're yummy. Warm, with just the right level of crispy and salty, even though there are only 2 of us we have get the large because I usually eat 1/2 of them on the way home. Cleanliness: Busy, or slow, the store is always clean. The only drawback? I have to go across town and shell out a fair chunk of change to get my fix. Walked in and it smelled really good, with the homemade bread. Ordered an "on-deck" torpedo. Seemed like too much bread for the meat, and that the meat was somewhat bland. Ordered a "poseidon" sub. Ended up with a "periscope" sub instead. That one was heated before served and when I got home it wasn't looking too good. Toasted it and ate it, I guess it was okay? WOW-OH-WEEE. WHAT A SANDWICH. got the pastrami with all the dozens and to include green chilies. The largest sandwich I have yet to have at a sub shop. Everything way extremely good and well prepared including the fresh cut and deep fried potato chips which was served in a cup, HOT. Dining area very clean and well kept. Love all the pictures on the wall of the Beatles. Just way to much fun. My only complaint is the receipt. I do like for things to be itemized. I hate not seeing how the bill is figured. This place was a huge disappointment. They forgot two of our orders of cheese and our only order of green Chile. I go to the bird store next door a lot and had been wanting to try the Yeller Sub because of the awesome sign with a sandwich/face. I ordered my sandwich, waffle fries and a soda. Can't remember the name of the sub, but it had three meats on it. On the con side, there was a lot of bread and it was all very difficult to eat. Also, the Italian dressing seemed like Kraft Italian, which is not my favorite. However! It was all very fresh and the employees were the friendliest, most helpful employees I think I've ever encountered. The sandwich gets three stars, the waffle fries four and the employees get 5+. Is it an older building? Sure, as I like to call them, rustic. Is the customer service awesome? Flawless. The teenager working the counter and took my order was super nice and professional. So I might have been initially partial to this place because I'm 85% convinced that a little bit of John Lennon was reincarnated when I was born. That said, they don't even have to sway me with the Beatles memorabilia to to get my vote for a great place to eat. Absolutely, positively, hands down, the best customer service I have EVER received in Albuquerque. When I walked in I was slightly overwhelmed by the menu -- so many choices. I've been in this position before at other places and I'm usually greeted with hostile impatience by the person behind the counter. Not at Yeller Sub, the clerk took his time and walked me through the menu, explained how everything was made, chatted it up with my baby, and lead me to a delicious cheesy steaky masterpiece. He also suggested we order the waffle fries with cheese sauce, which was a total winner. When we sat down, another staff member came up right behind me with a high chair for the kiddo. Throughout our meal various staff members kept checking on us, asking if they could refill our drinks and even brought my baby some slices of turkey when he refused to share my lunch with me. They're not. they're basically nuclear (or nuke-U-ler, if you want to pronounce it like a former president ;). serious, I used to think that chik fil a's waffle fries were the best anywhere- I'm pretty sure these not only give them a run for their money, but actually blow them out of the water, holy cow! not a spot of grease anywhere, perfectly crispy, BIG!!!!, and just flavorful as all heck! Sadly my waistline is not going to like me if i keep coming here, but those criss cut fries are simply like the blue crystal to me~ One other item of note: I realized after the 2nd bite that my sandwich had a bit of kick.....and then i remembered ordering green chile. Opened up the sanny and there it was: REAL green chile, big honking 3/8" diced chile, and it had some oomph! Apparently they refuse to use that sissy canned stuff around here. Taking a look at the walls in Yeller Sub tells you a lot about the place. They are adorned with accolades, newspaper articles, letters from thankful charities, and various other written kudos going back all the way to the store's opening in the early 90's. This all seems pretty encouraging, that is, until you realize that for some reason the paper trail dwindles to an end around 2001. After that, there is nothing. What happened? My theory is that this place used to be pretty damn good, (especially in a city like Albuquerque where good or local sub shops are hard to find) but slowly lost its mojo over the years. Nowadays, it offers below average subs for above average prices. Yeller Sub's first fault is noticeable almost immediately: they are strangely inflexible about customizing your sandwich. Sure, you can get whatever you want but you'll pay through the nose for it. Getting cheese on a sandwich they doesn't come with it (which is the overwhelming majority of sandwiches) costs extra, I can understand that. But charging 70 cents extra to get pickles or olives or fucking iceberg lettuce!? That's ridiculous. The sub itself was disappointing. For one thing, the bread was really stale and chewy. I thought maybe it was because I ordered a hot sub, but my wife's cold one suffered from the same flaw. The meat was pretty sparse and tasted a little off. Most of the rest of the sandwich was flavorless iceberg lettuce which, like styrofoam peanuts, is really only there to fill out the container. And, for a 12 inch, it was pretty small and unsatisfying. They've got ice-cream and french fries, with is an interesting concept. The frozen treats looked a little freezer burned, but they had plenty of good-looking flavors. And the waffle fries were a bit small but fairly tasty and certainly a much better option than the bag of overpriced chips most places offer. Props for that. Still, I won't be back. Even with the tragic recent closings of Lenny's and Port of Subs, I'd rather do without subs than waste my money at Yeller. Or suck it up and go to Subway. read more

Tried this place for the first time today. The staff was amazingly helpful and genuinely interested in making our experience the best. The subs are huge and amazingly good. They are willing and able to customize, but it's really best to ask what they think - they are right! I had the chicken fajita sub with grilled onions and green chilis. Wow! The bread was made fresh there, the chilis gave it just the right amount of heat, and the whole thing was amazing. The whole thing was at the suggestion of the staff, and boy did they hit a home run! I also had an order of their potato salad. The portion was a little on the small side, but it was delicious. They also do the full suite of fries, onion rings, and shakes. And all of it was very reasonably priced (2 sandwiches with custom toppings, drinks and potato salad was about $10). I've lived in Albuquerque for a little over five years. I always noticed Yeller Sub, singing The Beatles song in my head as I drove by, thinking nothing of it. He then proceeded to explain the menu to me and asked if I had any questions. I ordered a turkey sub with the bread hallowed out (to save on some carbs since I was splurging on fries!). He made sure the cook understood this special request. I was then torn between ordering the waffle fries and chips. I asked him for his recommendation to which he quickly responded, "try the fries!" My order was out relatively quickly - less than 10 minutes and well worth the wait. The sandwich was nice and soft, with potent onions, yum! The fries were hot, fresh and super crispy. The service was as good as advertised, the woman taking the orders was very knowledgeable and she was up-front with the fact that they were down a person that night and apologized. I appreciated the forwardness. I got the pastrami sandwich with all the fixings plus a few more. I wanted it toasted for the cheesy goodness to be all over the place. It took awhile to get our sandwiches but as I said they were down a person that night so no worries. The (very) well priced sandwich was a pretty big hit! It wasn't the best sandwich I had ever had but for less than 5 bucks, this 7" sandwich was very filling and the toppings are tasty! The meat stands out as the centerpiece of the sandwich too which is how it's supposed to be but unfortunately some places can't deliver this. JUST GO TO SUBWAY. This place is completely awful! I am simply stunned by the number of positive reviews. I actually re-googled and used google street view to make sure this was the same place as the place being reviewed. Yesterday was our first (and last time) there. We had been looking around for a place to eat for a while and were famished, otherwise the prices alone would have sent us along to the next place. We ended up splitting the ten-dollar 14 inch steak sub (sorry, 'torpedo' - they have 'subs' and they have 'torpedoes', same sizes, same prices, and no description of the difference) and a side of macaroni salad. The 'side' of macaroni salad was 1.99, and what came was a tiny sample-sized cup (see picture). It seems like they just gave us one heaping tablespoon. Just one tiny scoop! And I would have understood if the salad was GOOD, but this was nothing special at all, I wouldn't be surprised if it was 'Great Value' brand (no, I would, I've had GV brand and it's better than this). When our sandwich came, we were hoping for better results. We were let down, again. 14 inches of almost nothing. 14 inches would lead you to think that it was large, and the price would lead you to think that it was stuffed, but it was probably less thick around than a glass Coke bottle. So, yes, 14 inches, but a very stretched 14 inches, perhaps an 8 or 9 inch if you equate the size with a sub from anywhere else. There was a very tiny thin layer of 'steak', a good amount of sliced raw onion, and some iceberg lettuce and a couple of tomato slices thrown in. I can't stress enough that there was hardly any steak. You'd think it would be a good or reasonable amount, being literally named for that ingredient, but there was almost more tomato than meat, and there wasn't that much tomato. Did not come with cheese at all. I am not exaggerating, this was the most pitiful sandwich I've had in my 36 years of life. And again, I would have been quite forgiving if the sandwich tasted good, but there was no taste at all other than the lettuce. How sad is that, that the ICEBERG LETTUCE is the 'big' flavor of your $10 sub? The MAYO I added was the other flavor point! It came with their 'special' Italian dressing, which really was yet another letdown. And so much for 14 inches - the last 2 inches had nothing but a dusting of lettuce and a half a slice of tomato. The bread was chewy and doughy as if it were microwaved - probably was, but I wasn't inside when they made it. I forgot that we also got the home-made chips - those were blah and forgettable but still overpriced. We were going to split a double scoop of Blue Bell ice cream, but at a cost of $4.50, we decided to get the full half-gallon at Walgreens for literally one dollar more. I am just flabbergasted that this place has stayed open for so long. So if you're in the mood for a sad, chewy, doughy lettuce and mayo sandwich at prices you simply won't believe, go on down to the Yeller Sub. read more
