Got here pretty early, I like getting to bars right when they open. I've been on a tiki bar kick recently and had to swing through. The atmosphere doesn't compare to Kowloon 20 minutes north, but it was nice nonetheless. I loved the size and shape (That's what she said) of the bar and how it facilitated the bartender's ability to fill all the patrons up with alcohol. I also liked the bathroom. When we were ending our evening, we stopped into Tiki Rock and decided to go in for a drink and appetizers. The restaurant and the area was oddly quiet for a Saturday evening. Inside was laid back but the 80's playlist didn't really fit the restaurant's theme. We were seated quickly and began looking over the menu. The food was exceptionally good and well done. The Pork Belly Buns and Rangoons hit the spot and will be my go-to orders when I visit again. The chicken skewers were well seasoned and had just enough char to flavor. But, the since the skewer was the same size as the chicken, it was more of a hassle to eat and would be fine served as strips. The drinks were very good but the presentation was lacking since the illustrations in the menu didn't match. Our drinks were served in normal, boring glassware (except the hurricane glass) and were given water in single-use plastic cups. I hope they invest in themed barware to elevate the experience and use the glass for water in the future. Overall I enjoyed my stay and will go back again when in the area. The rice bowls came with white rice, diced avocado, and sweet& sour chicken. The bowls were huge, we both took to-go containers. If I were to order this again, I would ask for extra avocado. There wasn't really much I enjoyed about this place. Anyone who frequents Tiki Bars would know that there is not really a "tiki" vibe here. I can see this being a great place for a younger crowd looking to get trashed to loud club music. We tried to like the drinks but, they weren't great. Visiting from the D.C. area (which boasts a few tiki joints of its own) I would actually say this place is now at the top of my list of tiki themed bars. I couldn't stop staring at all the decorations/theming and getting ideas for a tiki room of my own haha. All the employees were friendly to us and to the other guests. I saw some reviews claimed they were rude, but I think you get what you give so the employees will mirror what you put out like any human being in the service industry. My hubby and I sat at the bar and had a very attentive and friendly bartender. We arrived about an hour after they opened and watched as the placed filled up with a Wednesday evening crowd. All the wait staff were attentive and were busy making sure everyone got their drinks and food. The food menu seemed small. Other than a burger, there wasn't much to offer in the way of a true meal. However, some of the appetizers had a Polynesian flavor profile. I think COVID really did a number on places like this so I'm assuming their food menu was slim because of that and recent shortages. We had the Korean style wings, crab rangoons, pot stickers, and my hubby enjoyed some fresh oysters. All of the food was tasty, but I could have enjoyed a plate of Dan Dan noodles or a Hawaiian style rice dish. I noticed from other review photos, the drinks were served in typical tiki themed glasses. Hubby and I got all of our drinks served in tall clear glasses. Kind of a disappointment but honestly, I bet they've had thefts of the other glasses so figured it wasn't worth the bottom dollar to keep those cuter cups around. Finally, it seems yes, the bar auto applies an 18% gratuity to all parties over two. While that could be annoying to those of you who like to be stingy with your tips, we didn't mind in the least as it was one less thing to think about. The checks come with a large QR code to pay online. Be careful with this option as the site they use assumes the pre-applied gratuity is a service charge and will auto apply another tip amount to your total. If you're not drunk and distracted, it's an easy catch so you can just zero out the tip and pay. Otherwise, just pay with card like normal to avoid any confusion. I highly recommend this place if you're into tiki joints and are looking for a place with a cool atmosphere. We ordered two drinks (ginger maitai and the guava lava)--both undrinkable. We have never never drinks unfinished..so this was a first. The ginger maitai tasted like vomit and Bacardi 151. Enough said. We were seated and weren't served for quite a while (which we understood as it was understaffed). The table next to you was seated ~25 minutes after we were but their orders were taken first and their food was served first as well. This is a cool spot for drinks! I had not heard of Tiki Rock until I came by with some coworkers for after work drinks. Well, the cocktail menu was super cool. There was a lot of drinks with a tropical twist but also some non-tropical choices. I had the Suit and Tai, which was a refreshing gin based drink. I then ordered a version of an expresso martini that included cold brew in the drink. All of the rinks we ordered were well made and well enjoyed. We also got the flaming pineapple drink (I dont remember the name) that was quite the spectacle. It tasted fine but we didn't order it for the taste! My only complaint is that everything took a while to come out. Granted, the drinks were not simple but we would end up waiting a while. First time at Tiki Rock. Service was excellent. Shiner was our bartender and he was awesome. Genuine nice guy who we had a great conversation with. Served great drinks was speedy. These were tasty and made fresh (we came in right when they opened for dinner). Lastly the Daikon fries with Uni Mayo was the winner. We saw the item on the menu and were kinda skeptical it would work. However the daikon fry was crispy yet juicy. It didn't need the uni mayo to be enjoyed, but it just made it a bit more decadent. Maybe if they had actually let us eat here, I'd have given it a higher review. Tiki Rock has the vaguely tropical decor down, completely out of place plants, totem pole stools, assorted sea accoutrements, basically a selection of Party City goods. What they don't have down is the awareness that they are a Tiki Bar in downtown Boston and they are, for the most part, empty 90% of the time. Those two factors would make me think that when I came with my party of five to ask for a table the service would be a bit more inclined to, I dunno, serve. The place was FULLY empty and they told me that all the tables were reserved. And they didn't say it apologetically, they said it like this is a thing they do on the regular; reserve their entire place and wait patiently in silence for those reservers to show up. I know this is kind of a lot to write about a place I didn't go to, but I'm honestly blown away by how this place manages to survive in a prime location with nobody in it and nothing really to offer. I've been to Tiki Rock a few times as it is across the street from my office. This time I came specifically to try the $1 Dumpling Tuesday Special they have advertised online. I was initially disappointed when both bartenders were not aware of this special on their website. After talking to their manager they said that they do serve the $1 Dumplings. The decorations here are awesome. I have previously tried the cocktails and can say they taste great, albeit pricey. This time, for the $1 dumplings I was told I could pick from the three types of gyoza on the menu. They had veggie, pork, and chicken. I selected five chicken and five pork. Service was nice but a bit slow. The dumplings finally came out and they were kind enough to provide a helping of sriracha when i asked. I really enjoyed the flavor of the filling, but the chicken and pork pretty much tasted the same. I wish they would have provided more types of dumplings. Overall I think Tiki Rock is a cool spot worth checking out, but not somewhere I feel excited about returning too. Came here because I got a nift here thinking that I can eat dinner and get drinks here, but quickly realized this is a bar, not a restaurant with drinks. There are only a few choices of large plates and all pretty expensive. We got the PuPu Platter which was $45 for 4 of us to share which had 4 of I think 6 different appetizers (crab rangoon, fried dumpling, skewers, etc). We went with this because the appetizers are pretty expensive $12, so it seemed like the more cost effective option. The presentation was nice. It came on a spinning bowl with a tiny grill in the middle, but I was still hungry after. The drinks tho, super super good. K bay and I can see clearly were both really well made. I didn't like the Voracious Vixen so much because it was basically just blue tequila. The one that comes in a pineapple, is the one you want to get if you want to "get weird" for those of you looking to get weird. The bar is fun and tiki themed (no surprise there). Not the best food in the world but the drinks and atmosphere made up for it. My friend and I ordered the strawberry mai tai that comes in a pineapple (and is supposed to serve two people) for $38 and the shrimp platter to share for $23. The mai tai was tasty and STRONG, I was feeling it after a few sips. They put generous portions of crushed ice, strawberries, pineapple purée in this as well and the whole process of an absolute show! They lit up the lime on top and sprinkled cinnamon all over it to get rid of the fire. A bit messy in the bar top we were sitting at but they were quick to clean it up! The shrimp platter was a bit of a rip off for the price, with only a few pieces of deep fried shrimp and some fries. But hey, I guess you don't come here for the food! It also seemed like the portion sizes for other items on the menu were tiny for the price so we were hesitant to order more food. The drinks however are beauuuutiful and so aesthetically pleasing, feels like you are on a tropical island far far away in the middle of Boston :) The service was good given how busy they were - we sat directly at the bar so it was super easy to make eye contact and speak to the people working there! Super happy they were able to seat us on a busy Friday night without a reservation (just had a short 10' minute wait!!) It's such a fun place, good vibes, and loved how vibrant the place was. The music gets a bit loud later in the night - my friend and I noticed our voices getting progressively louder as the night went on. I love the concept - a tiki bar on a freezing cold Boston night! They have a great craft beer menu, lots of tiki drinks, and even mocktails that don't make me say "virgin" or "no alcohol please!" They definitely rock the tiki theme here. Interior is nicely done with colored lights on the wall highlighting the tiki gods, pineapples, and big beautiful leather banquette surrounding the bar, which is a large rectangle in the center of the place. Bar is pretty large compared to the size of the place but I guess they focus on their pricey drinks here all given a fancy name for a bunch of liquor and sugar splashed together. I had one rum drink and it was $15 or so and lots of sugar. I came in with my BF for the sushi because I had a $15 voucher. So,l we ordered a fancy roll and a simple roll just to try both. The fancy roll, Dragons Breath, came out flaming (plate under the sushi plate had blue fire coming off of it) which was rad! The simple roll was simple but wow did it taste way beyond simple. It had the perfect amount of crunch on top. The fancy roll was tasty and a little bigger than the simple. If I were to go back, I'd try a different fancy roll and maybe get a few more simple ones. The fancy one was 2x the price ($19) which i thought was pricey! So, I'd say 3 stars because of price/portion and is pricier than other sushi joints but nothing more than the decor sticks out to me. Appreciating Tiki Rock to me means understanding what is is and what it's not. What it is is a fun bar near Faneuil Hall. If you're looking for that amazing immersive tiki bar decor, go to Kowloon or Wusong Road. Both have far better decor. And there are other places that have stronger drinks. But what Tiki Rock is is fun. When you need a break from the gravitas of old Boston with old buildings and old historic pubs and people of the Irish and British Isles taking their beer and whiskey WAY too seriously, Tiki Rock is a fun reprieve to get a good tropical drink and fun food in an almost cartoonish mug. From what I saw in my time there, if you're on a girls weekend, it's a great place to stop in and get a fun communal tropical drink or a fun group of shots (several of which came with the fun flourish of a dry ice presentation) and some food as part of your day. So judge it for what it is, a fun bar with good food and good drinks in a tourist part of town. The decor is good enough to sell the theme. The drinks are good. The food is good. It's a fun stop and place to meet friends. It's not Kowloon or the Mai Kai or the Tonga Room, or any of those old tiki palaces. Judged on that spectrum, it's not even close.
