Service was extremely great, but the food was decent. I ordered the eggs benedict which comes with hash brown ($13.95). The ham, english muffin, and hash brown were good, but the eggs on my benedict were poached for too long. The eggs weren't runny nor did it drip and the yolk was completely cooked. The hollandaise sauce was thick to the point where it looked like I had cheese on top of my eggs so I had to scrape some off. I was really disappointed in my dish. I'd rather go to another brunch place which has the same price but better quality. read more

Three of us went for lunch and everything was delicious! Good portion size too! Hash browns were perfect! We ordered - Salmon Salad. ( I liked the blue cheese and it was a good amount) - Omelette with bacon and spinach - Eggs with hash browns and French Toast... delicious and lots of it! I would definitely return!!! Good service and the simple contemporary ambiance was nice. read more

I really want to like this location although the staff is rude! I understand that everyone is overworked and are stressed out so I really try not to complain. I work in the area and purchase breakfast from this location at least 3x a week, at a minimum of $20 bucks a day. The food is not perfect; however, I do love the biscuits and gravy, hash browns and apple sausages. BUT today, they served me burnt French Toast I didn't notice until I returned to work and opened the box!! I was utterly shocked and saddened that someone actually thought this was ok to serve to a customer. Mind you, I paid $17 bucks for this! Since I ordered from DD, I was able to get a full refund through DD instead of fighting with the restaurant to make it right. I had a meeting to attend so I could NOT wait until they made another order and TBH when I took it back to the restaurant, I didn't even ask for new food!! The staff behind the counter was so unfriendly that I didn't want another order!! read more

My goto spot for my breakfast needs; good food, reasonable pricing, good coffee and nice service. Their coffee is so good that I don't bother going to Starb or Peet's when I'm in their area. This place is really busy on weekend so plan accordingly. read more

If there was a 2.5 star, I would rate it that. If I was rating strictly on service, I would have given it 3 stars. In the neighborhood w/friends, one in a wheelchair. Sadly all the seats outside were taken, but, they were seating inside on a limited basis. So in we go. Our server Fiona was FAB. Very attentive, prompt and polite service and seemed to always keep an eye on us. Sadly the name on the bill was "Jorge" their code name for "we pool our tips"! Glad I asked her name as she deserved the recognition. Friend ordered Jalapeno Burger, Med, sadly it was quite rare. But he was starving and it did look quite good. No complaints. Other guest ordered a Bagel w/Cream Cheese. No bagel selection "just plain" and it was quite plain, cream cheese had all ready been spread and it wasn't even toasted, not even a little bit. Pretty boring, but maybe I expected too much. I ordered the West Portal Avenue Scramble (Avocado, Bacon, Green Onions, Cheddar Cheese). Well, it wasn't scrambled, it looked more like fried with melted Cheddar Cheese on top. If the Bacon was in there, it ran through, same w/the Green Onions. Hash browns were boxed, frozen kind and they were not even cooked through, brown on one side, white on the other. Boring! And tasteless. I ordered Rye toast. One positive they gave you 2 full slices = 4 halves. A rare find anymore. BUT, BUT... it wasn't even toasted. It was barely warm and again, I think it ran by the toaster, not in it. This the server should have caught! Geez, the restaurant is named "Toast", now I question "Why"! I finally caught her eye and showed her the pathetic toast. She agreed, it was not acceptable. If she'd looked the 1st time, she would have requested new toast before she ever brought it to the table. Thankfully nicely toasted toast arrived fairly quickly with ample butter packets. But then I had to ask for jam. She proceeded to find 4 little packets (you know the kind) and dropped them on the table. WHY, do I have to ask for Jam. It should automatically be brought for a breakfast meal. Geez! When I was a server, years ago, it was up to me to check the correctness of the order, presentation and make sure everything was hot. Guess that's not the case anymore. I'm finding this more and more common. Sad for me, so few choices in West Portal, but I shall not be returning. Another $20 down the drain. read more

Very depressing... all the condiments on the tables are 1/4 full, ketchup, salt and pepper. Shredded potatoes were over cooked or they were leftovers. Service was very poor .. very sad. read more

Been going here for YEARS. We order to go at least twice a week. Been going downhill guys. Today you've hit rock bottom. Husband put in order waited, asked about it...oops she forgot to give it to cooks. Brings food home and the bacon is trash. We spend minimum $100.00 a month at your restaurant. What a terrible experience!!! We (3) arrived at 11:00. The host offered and put together 2 small round tables but it blocked the sidewalk outside the parklet. We told him that it was fine to wait for a larger table that a party of 2 was sitting at. We had not seen each other for about 2 years so it was fine to chat and wait. More than half an hr later, the couple left. We went to the table only to be told by the same host we could not be seated because the table is for a larger group now that arrived 25 minutes after us and can squeeze into the larger table. He had the nerve to bring out a clipboard to show that he never put our names down even though we spoke to him and discussed the table issue and he walked passed us numerous times as we waited. Wow. Is this right how they treated us? There were only 2 people seated in that table prior to our arrival. I hope it was not a racial issue because our table was given to a white family who happily took it knowing full well we were there and what the issue was. To tell the truth, I wouldn't have felt safe eating the food if we forced them to seat us at that point. Whatever the reason, we will never go there ever again or any of our friends or family. So sad. No excuse for mistreating guests. read more

This is slightly alarming. I was torn about posting this, but considering what might have happened I feel it's the right thing to do. Went into Toast West Portal Saturday morning with a friend around 8am. Ordered Irish Breakfast, which was tasty until I found a wire brush strand underneath the bacon. It was about and inch and a half. I was shocked, notified the manager and asked for a replacement breakfast. My friend and I watched to see if he investigated with the line cooks, but they were all busy with to-go orders. Honestly, I couldn't eat and got the replacement to go. I'll probably throw it out. It would have been easy to swallow a thin, curly strand of wire. I can't imagine what would have happened to the stomach lining, or infection, or removal. I can't think about it. Surreal. Two stars for being open on a Sunday and not making me sick (hopefully). Was craving some post-church diner food. Found them on Yelp and noted several remarks on the service but due to proximity crossed my fingers and went there. Got a seat, requested warm or hot water. Finally, 5 minutes or so later a glass of ice water arrived. The replacement came a little bit quicker. Ordered a Chicken Fried Steak with "sausage gravy." It took maybe 15 minutes as I'd expect, then a mediocre food service type CF Steak arrived topped with some of that McCormick-type powdered white "gravy" and not a hint of sausage or even sausage essence. Whatever, eat and be done with this place. However, had no ketchup, salt, pepper, hot sauce, or even jam for the 4 pieces of toast in the meal. Spoke with the woman clearing the table next to mine and she promises to get jam for the toast. Half hour later I was still waiting for her return. Other wait staff walk past the table for the next 15 minutes and ignore my "excuse me" as I slowly consume this breakfast that would embarrass McDonalds (but the rye toast was actually great, despite lack of jam). Finally one of the times I asked the waiter to acknowledge me, the lady next to me speaks up to him and he wakes up then FINALLY brings the jam as I am biting into my last runny egg remnant. Thank god I didn't try the coffee here is all I can say. At this point I decided this was a Zen meditation hall and I would practice patience and observance to see how long it takes to be ignored with a table full of empty plates before I get a check. Answer: around 10-12 minutes. Finally paid and left. Wasn't feeling very generous tipping on the horrible service- I'm usually very willing to look beyond glitches in attention and often overtip. But of the THREE people who were constantly near my table and didn't even check in once, ignored my "excuse me's" (including what seemed to be a supervisor) or provide any service after the runner dropped off the meal, they had attention on other tables just fine. On the up side, I have confirmed this place provides neither decent food (except the awesome rye toast) nor an acceptable level of service. Wish I had jumped on MUNI to do Orphan Andy's even if I had to wait an hour in the wind and rain. In my opinion as someone who likes eating out, Toast is basically "toast." read more

This is our regular place to go for breakfast after grocery shopping. We come here about every 2 weeks. I always order hash brown Jill with extra sour cream and bacon on the top. My auntie ordered French toast and sausages. We ordered and our food was out to us in 4 minutes. Seriously overcooked hash browns. Definitely no extra sour cream. My auntie had the smallest pieces of half burnt French toast I have ever seen. Sausages weren't browned all the way. My food was actually barely warm. I guess new cooks or something. We most like will go to the other Toast in the city on Church St next time. read more

Look at my review history and you'll see I love to write five-star reviews, and seldom denigrate any local business. So I do not write this review lightly or easily. Toast West Portal was, up until quite recently, one of my favorite breakfast and lunch spots. Sadly, it has devolved into amateur night in the food service industry. Today's experience at Toast: 1. Somebody who I assume was not our server (it's hard to tell lately, because every time we go in, no particular employee seems to have ownership of our table) attempted to bring us somebody else's food. When we told him it wasn't ours, he proceeded to "shop it around" to the other tables around us, hoping to find the people who had, in fact ordered that food. Shopping the food around is ridiculous and embarrassing under any circumstance, but doing so during a pandemic and giving everybody a chance to breathe on the food before it finds its owners is careless and gross. This was not an isolated incident. The last time we dined at Toast, somebody (again, not our server) tried to bring us the wrong food, and I believe that even happened the time before that. 2. When the food arrived, the eggs were cold. I am all about a scrambled omelette with cheese. The whole point of such a dish is that you want to enjoy all that melted cheddar being, well, melted. Today, the cheddar on top of my scramble had cooled and hardened enough that it could be lifted off the eggs as one semi-solid piece. My friend's eggs were also cold. 3. The person who dropped off the food had not noticed we didn't have napkins or silverware. I had to call after him as he hastily retreated and ask for those things. 4. We were abandoned. Our coffee would never have been refilled if one of us had not gone up to the cash register and requested it. And I guess the staff was in no hurry to turn that table over, because we had to again approach the cash register to request the check. 5. There was no hand soap in the bathroom. In addition to the empty soap dispenser mounted on the wall, there was another soap dispenser laying on its back on the sink counter. I tried that one, but it was also empty. Mind you, this was not a stand-alone soap dispenser. It was one meant to be wall-mounted. Just laying there like a spare part. Empty. If you're the owner, please know I would have preferred to send you an e-mail than say all this in public, but I can't find your e-mail address on any of the Toast Eatery Web sites, and I wasn't confident the contact form would funnel my message to you. Please do not discipline or fire anybody over the chorus of bad reviews you've lately been getting. Your workers need better training and support. I don't think they know how badly they're dropping the ball. And if you haven't trained them on how to run a restaurant, that's on you. Also, with outdoor parklet/patio dining, your West Portal store has essentially doubled in size, and you're getting tons of to-go orders, so your employees are probably overwhelmed. If there are not enough servers and bussers on hand to keep things running smoothly, again, that's on you. Please do better. Toast West Portal used to be a treasure. It still can be. But not without aggressive intervention. read more

In having heard the reviews about this places for quite some time I felt it was time that I finally stop by and give this place a try. I came by this past week to see what this place had to offer and it was alright. The first thing you notice is that the seating is extremely limited. There was no line when I arrived which was great but the seating was a bit tight and uncomfortable. I arrived around 11 in the morning which was nice because there were not a lot of people dining at that time. I was able to find some seating around the middle of the restaurant along the wall but that was not the most ideal spot to sit either. I was in the mood for an omelette an the menu here definitely had a very wide selection of options to choose from. The service was good well. The staff were very attentive to the customer needs and really seemed to be on top of checking in with customer orders. Part of that may have been in part due to the fact that my seat was within arms length of the back P.O.S. terminal!!!! Regardless, the service was great. The food was decent. The omelette and the wheat toast were fine. There was nothing spectacular about the meal but it was delicious. I think I would have preferred a larger omelette but that is just a personal preference. I would recommend this place for breakfast to anyone that may be in the area looking for a nice place to eat breakfast or brunch. Plus, the pricing for the meals is appropriate as well. My only issue would be that if you come here on a weekend you may have to wait for a long time before being seated and served, keep that in mind for all you weekenders. #ToastAndJam read more

When the first Toast opened over a decade ago on Church in Lower Noe Valley, I was dying to try it so I could pass as a fully ripened hipster in search of a trendy yet tasty breakfast. But now that I've fallen off the vine onto the ground in a splat and there are four Toast Eateries across the city, my anticipation dwindled while my waistline expanded. That's why I was on the ho-hum side when my friend Maggie suggested we have a late lunch here when we were strolling on West Portal. I was kinda hoping Orexi could be open for a little oompah Greek food. Alas, we mutually decided what we really wanted was some basic diner fare to satisfy our cravings. It turned out we arrived about a half-hour before their closing at 4PM, and I thought for sure they would glare at us with small-mouth. But no, the serving staff was still very much present treating us like the first customers of the day. Maggie decided to have the $9.95 Chilaquiles, which consisted of two lightly scrambled eggs with tortilla chips in tomatillo sauce and topped with chopped cilantro and a dollop of sour cream (photo: http://bit.ly/2niAzJC). It was nicely executed, and a bite told me they took care in preparing those eggs. I ordered a full-salute American classic, the $11.95 BLT with an extra $2 for the addition of sliced avocado (photo: http://bit.ly/2nOe2bA). Nearly $14 did strike me as steep for such a school lunch-level creation, but it was nicely put together with an extra slathering of mayo on sourdough toast upon my request. And yes, there was a pile of French fries that Maggie and I didn't have a problem devouring. I understand times are tough during Covid and I want to give local businesses my support. But, with my Uber Eats order, I had ordered a side of fruit and was VERY SPECIFIC that I am allergic to melons. When I got my side of fruit along with my other food order, it was clear they don't read the food notes when you order online. I called the business to ask for a refund on my side of fruit about 5 times and the phone kept ringing and obviously, they don't answer their phone. Again, I understand times are tough but I could've gotten sick, perhaps sent to the hospital because of my food allergy. It goes to show this business does not care what their customers want and asked for. If you're looking for a brunch spot with coffee, don't come here. There are other businesses who DO pay attention to what the customers ask for and give you what you want. read more

We decided to try this restaurant for breakfast and it paid off! Loved the food. Two selections were the Croissant French toast, which was unique and fabulous. Nice, crispy, tasty...the other was the Godfather Omelet with onion, bell pepper, mushrooms and Italian sausage, which as very good and tasted clean which to me is always a plus, not too greasy and simple foods. The place was not fancy, but a quaint spot in a neighborhood setting. Highly recommended. read more

Toast is a great place for breakfast in west portal! I enjoy it and the coffee Is deelish as well! It's Java beach coffee FYI...As a vegan; I go for the Veggie scramble with tofu (you can sub anything with eggs for Tofu) and the almond milk cappuccino is pretty tasty. Also, they have Vegan zucchini bread, if you want a tasty treat to go. I hear the French toast and breakfast burritos are good as well! Tips: -weekends will be busy -great weekday date spot for breakfast or lunch. -street parking is pretty easy read more

I came here on a Saturday morning for brunch with my friend. While it was packed, we were still able to find a small table and be seated without wait. The waiter came around and took our order not long after being seated. I ordered the blackstone benedict and requested the hollandaise sauce on the side. I heard the waiter repeat my order, so I knew I had said sauce on the side. It took a while for the food to arrive, and when it did arrive, the sauce was on my benedict rather than on the side. When I notified the waiter, he asked if that was ok or if I wanted them to remake it. I asked if they could remake it, and they did. I wasn't too impressed by their food. The hashbrown was crispy on the outside but very mushy on the inside. The english muffin wasn't toasted. read more

Even though I said I would never return in my previous review I decided to give Toast another chance - mostly because my dad was treating for breakfast :) . We came on a Wednesday morning - not crowded at all. I had the combo and the coffee was strong and delicious, hash browns were perfect along with eggs, bacon and waffle. read more

First of all they "lost" my order, so I had to wait while they quickly made it. It was ok but they also got it wrong but that's minor. The staff wasn't very friendly and the food was ok. If you eat in it may be better. Might try dine in, breakfast items looked good. read more

Within the West Portal area, there is a good handful of restaurants that serve breakfast and brunch just as Toast Eatery does. My point is, Toast would have to be one of my faves out of the many breakfast/brunch spots. The food selection is simple and all seems so yummy. The prices here are decent and are average priced. The seating capacity is mid spaced, and the decor is slightly rustic and simple. I have tried their belgian waffles which were warm and fluffy. I had also tried their eggs benedict which was scrumpcious as well. read more

I've been here a couple of times over the past few years and I've never had any problems, but today I took my mom and partner here for breakfast and after getting about halfway through my Toast Scrambler I bit into a pea sized piece of broken glass. After flagging down our waiter they apologized and took it over to the manager. After one more small apology we had to ask them to remove it from the bill. This is not how you run a business and not how you clean up a potentially messy situation. read more

Stopped by on a Friday for a late lunch, when we felt like grabbing breakfast items at 2pm yes, double breakfast is totally a thing for us! The place was not crowded, but also wasn't empty - a lot of people chowing down on HUGE sandwiches and similarly to us grabbing their egg fix on a weekday afternoon. The service was nice and the food was good, but nothing really stood out too much. I had salmon eggs bennies and my husband ordered an omelette. I think hash browns were the best dish, but again... everything was good, just not excellent. Parking is a problem... there is metered parking on the street if you can find a spot. Overall a nice place for your brunch fix! read more

Came here with my two children and the service was terrible. My family and I was at a table waiting on our to go order. We asked for waters and instead of bringing them to our table she sat them on the counter and then as she was walking around she decided to tell us our waters were on the counter. We ordered two tuna melts. I asked for mayo & she said they didn't have Mayo packets. I suggested she add some to a condiment container, she seemed to have an attitude. She gave me one small container for two sandwiches. I asked for another and she proceeded to tell me that the other container was full and should be enough. I asked for another & instead of putting it in the bag like she did the other she tossed it on the counter. Very rude and I don't recommend this place. It looks cute but the people are rude and not welcoming. read more

It felt like the moment he heard 'gluten' and 'dairy,' he mentally categorized me as 'vegan' and stopped looking for ways to make the experience enjoyable. Yikes! Zero Stars - A Toasty Nightmare in the City by the Bay I'm still trying to process the unmitigated disaster that was my dining experience at Toast Eatery in San Francisco. As a self-proclaimed food enthusiast, I was excited to try this popular spot, but what I encountered was a culinary catastrophe that left me questioning the very fabric of the establishment. Ambiance: A Snooze-Fest The moment I walked in, I was greeted by a drab and uninspired atmosphere that screamed "meh." The decor, if you could call it that, was a lazy attempt at rustic chic, with mismatched furniture and a color scheme that seemed to have been chosen by a sleepy toddler. The overall vibe was a tired, overused coffee shop that had seen better days. Service: Clueless and Unfriendly Our server, who seemed to be suffering from a severe case of apathy, took an eternity to take our order and forgot one of our appetizers altogether. When I politely asked for a refill on my drink, I was met with a sigh and a long wait. It was clear that the staff was not interested in providing anything resembling good customer service. Food: A Gastronomic Abomination But the real tragedy was the food. I ordered the signature avocado toast, which arrived looking like a sad, green mess. There are far better places to eat in San Francisco, and I'd rather eat at a street cart than set foot in this dump again. Will I return? Beautiful decorations, but a lot of problems. I came into Toast this Monday (6/29) for lunch. The restaurant itself is beautiful! However, the layout is terrible. The coffee area, in the front, is well done but confusing. Walking in I wasn't sure if I was supposed to order up front and sit down or sit down first or only order coffee. It needs more direction. I waited at the front for someone to help me and there was only one barista who was busy making drinks. Finally, she was done and could take my order but she seemed annoyed and stressed. My coffee was great! I decided I would sit down and order something to eat as well. I wanted to ask the barista if I could sit down anywhere or if I had to wait to be seated but she was back to making more drinks. So I walked in and sat myself. A waiter came and took my order. The service was okay, not the best, but not the worst. My food was overpriced. A glass of milk costs close to $5! I asked my server if I could speak to management just to ask them a few questions and the server told me the manager was not at the premises. I was shocked. A restaurant being in its open month, I would expect the manager to be there. Especially with there being so few employees on location. Management needs to get it together. Called today, 9/24 at 12:17 pm, to ask if they changed the menu on what is on the Hash Brown Hill on DoorDash since the description did not match the menu online. Whoever was at the register that time picked up the phone immediately and set it down. All I heard was background noise. I attempted to call back for 5 minutes and it said "The person you have dialed can't take your call". So whoever picked up the phone purposely left the phone hanging and did not want calls coming in after. You can argue maybe they forgot to hang up the first call, I doubt it. Whoever picked up the phone had it in hand when I first called and did not want other calls coming in. You can argue there is a rush that it's lunch time and they didn't want phone calls. Then just don't pick up? It's either a young kid who does not want phone calls or an adult with a terrible attitude. read more

The pandemic has been hard on all restaurants. Every place is short staffed YET this place has continued to serve delicious food. Every cashier and waiter that helped me has gone above and beyond. This restaurant is so incredibly understaffed that I'm surprised it's not a violation. The poor servers were running around trying their best to make people happy, but there was no way they could keep up with the volume of patrons. Solid four stars. They have about 6 beers on tap. Always good selection now the food is amazing. Small enough for be a good lunch brunch or a snack out with friends needing a quick stop for some food. read more

However, we were told that about half of the menu items were unavailable due to limited supplies. Because of that, I had to substitute the potatoes for fries. The dirty tablecloths also took away from the overall dining experience.
