I gave only 3 stars out of an EASY 4 if only for - Escolar. An excellent Japanese restaurant like TOKYO GARDEN ought not to have this fish anywhere near the premises. Some places will call it " white fish", "butterfish" or even "white tuna". In the case of it's appearance on a plate of Sashimi Appetizer at this restaurant last night, what should have been Hamachi in a perfect world, was actually identified as Escolar by our server (a very pleasant and professional member of equally commendable staff), which I appreciated for its honesty - if maybe sue to her possibly being unaware of the facts about Escolar. I sent it back- " oh no, this does bad things to my stomach" I told her. She came back a few minutes later , but instead of the Hamachi I asked for, the replacement fish was identified as "red snapper" and tasted fine. I feel like when a customer isn't eating for free, they ought to get the fish they ask for. But at least there was no argument and the problem was dealt with in a civil fashion. Here's what you could expect after eating Escolar: "The escolar's wax ester content can cause keriorrhea, also called gempylotoxism or gempylid fish poisoning. Symptoms range from stomach cramps to rapid loose bowel movements, occurring 30 minutes to 36 hours following consumption. This condition may also be referred to as steatorrhea." -Wikipedia Avoid this white, buttery-looking fish. Restaurants should know better than to serve it. It's my sincere hope the owner ( who was eating with a couple just a few feet away, and did not greet any tables while we were there) ) will take my review to heart. read more

Seems like prices have gone up and I'm not feeling the forced added tip !!!! We've ate here before with the same amount of people and I've never paid as much as I paid tonight !!!! Was invited to a birthday dinner with friends and have never been here, or any sushi/teppanyaki before so I could not wait to try it out. I ordered the New York and my wife ordered the shrimp. We both ordered the soup and it was good but not great. Then the show began and our chef was funny, delightful and put on a good show. The steak was cooked perfectly ordered, and my wife enjoyed her shrimp. Unfortunately we did not try the sushi but we will next time, and there will be a next time for sure. read more

I decided to take my son out to teppanyaki for lunch and i can't believe he's lived his whole 16 years of life without me taking him!! What kind of mom am i LOL...The location in my opinion could definitely be better. The hostess was super nice i think they have a total of 6 teppan grills and the other side is regular dining. We were seated at a grill that had all business people. You get miso soup to start now that was some delicious soup and i am a tofu hater!! and i devoured that soup along with that silky tofu i couldn't believe it. Our guy came out and Omg i absolutely loved him!!! His giggles were just intoxicating to me Lol...He tried so hard to get everyone into it but the people we were seated with were pretty boring and just talked amongst themselves most of the time so he had a tall order on this bunch. I'm gonna assume that dinners are more fun as my older son said he had the same guy when he went and it was as a blast so i will have to come back. Food was solid i loved that fried rice, the filet and shrimp were cooked perfectly but i was staring at that calamari which will most certainly be on my plate next time. My son had scallops for the first time and loved them! He's my only "adventurous" one and will try anything at least once he definitely gets that from his wild mom ;) The one complaint i do have is the sauces...i've been to another teppan place in Fresno and that sauce they have is well let me say on another level like i could take shots of that sauce!! The ones they give you here is a hot mustard for you steak which is good but pretty basic. The other one is a ginger soy which left a lot to be desired to me just my personal opinion. Very professional staff and everyone we came into contact with were super sweet to us. Can't believe I haven't posted a review for this place!!! Recently, my husband and I decided to go to TG During lunch and it wasn't as busy as it usually gets during dinner time. TG is one of my favorite restaurants in town, yes it's not a new hot spot, but teppanyaki never gets old. I believe TG has one of the best teppanyaki in town and the funny part is they don't use too much ingredients and it still tastes amazing. Something about their rice that reminds me of my mom's fried rice. The cooks are always entertaining and if it's your first time visiting then you definitely will have a fun experience. Sushi is also yummy and they have a lot of other options if you don't want to eat at the hibachi table. Such a cute atmosphere inside. The place hasn't really changed in years and continues to stay clean and the workers continue to stay friendly. read more

Jaime knows how to cook filet mignon perfectly; medium rare is my preference but he does it anyway you'd like. Our chef was fun and entertaining. He was an older gentleman and talked to all of us, even included our nephew and did special tricks and stuff to keep him entertained as well. The food was amazing. Though the reason I gave three stars was because of the server. She was a young woman who wore glasses and she just did not want to be there at all. Stuff must be going on in her personal life because her attitude towards strangers was awful and nasty. And I understand, I work in the service industry as well, you can have bad days, but I've never rolled my eyes at someone just because someone wanted to add a water with their wine. And it'd be different if we were rude, but our whole table noticed and still we were nice to her. Guess the restaurant must add an 18% gratuity on all tabs having servers with an attitude like that, I wanted to give her a fat 0$ on that tab and give it to her personally. We had a really young cook who was very reserved, visibly lacked confidence and seemed like he didn't receive adequate training. As a result, our experience was really disappointing compared to the many other times we've visited. Additionally, and more concerning, the experience was soured by the fact that when they give you your bill, they fail to inform you that they've already included a 18-20% gratuity , regardless of how small your party is. Whats more confusing is that they still include an entire portion of the bill to leave an additional tip, including percentage breakdowns to help you tip again. After reading previous reviews its obvious the management is aware of this issue but chooses not to address it or do anything to inform customers. Even just a bold comment above the additional tip portion advising customers that a tip was already included and they may provide an "additional" tip if they feel the desire to. Maybe im just perturbed I left a twenty percent tip on top of already paying the included tip for literally the worst tepanyaki experience we've ever had. Big fan of this place for Japanese Teppanyaki. I personally think they have the best atmosphere of any other teppan place in town, the service is very polite and attentive, and the chefs always make my young son feel like a super star. Price is somewhat steep but really bang for your buck! Food: Fantasy Roll ($13.95) - scallop with hearty amounts of tuna and salmon. What more could you ask for?? Hot Night Roll ($14.95) - certainly a hot (spicy) roll. Stacked with spicy tuna, spicy mayo and crunchy tempura. Definitely recommend! Soft shell crab appetizer - holy moly this was delicious! Lightly battered tempura soft shell crab cut into 2 (perfect for sharing) with a ponzu sauce. Service: Wonderfully friendly staff. You will be greeted by a host who will either put you on the waitlist or seat you (tell her if you're there for sushi or teppanyaki). The service is fast and will never leave your cup drinkless! It was my first time here at Tokyo garden and honestly was disappointed. Came here for a friends birthday on Saturday and our waitress which I did not get her name, but she looked a bit young and was just super rude, she did not explain the menu or pricing well she was very confusing and she seemed mad that not all of our guests were getting more food and some just settled on sushi. She truly gave a whatever attitude and didn't inform us of the gratuity being added to our bill. Again, she was rude and said we couldn't do individual tickets and keep in mind some people came alone for dinner so it was weird trying to put two people on each ticket when not everyone knows each other. Our chef was an older man and honestly was okay until he insisted on calling our friend who was their birthday the birthday boy even though she's a woman which is super disrespectful and he also made racist Asian jokes as well joking about his wife being angry & hating her. I'm sorry but the transphobic and Asian jokes are so distasteful and disgusting. Please do better. As for the food it was alright. The sushi was the only good thing besides the decor I suppose. read more

My sister and I wanted to take my dad out for a post Father's Day dinner since she was out of town Sunday and we didn't get to spend it together. After spending 30 minutes waiting at another place down the street I pulled up Yelp to look for other options and saw Tokyo Garden. I haven't been here since high school simply because I don't live near here and oh my, I forgot what I had been missing! We ordered 3 rolls firecracker, yellow submarine, and California roll. All 3 were delicious. My dad ventured out and tried the firecracker and yellow submarine (he doesn't normally do raw fish) and LOVED them! We ordered the filet + shrimp and my mom did the New York and chicken and we all loved our entrees! So flavorful and huge portions (we are all having leftovers for lunch today). I would say the best part of the night though was our amazing and attentive server Kat and our chef James!! They both were so cheerful amid all of the covid restrictions and kept us laughing and we just really really enjoyed this night out. Our drinks were never empty and we left happy with our belly's full and cheeks hurt from smiling. Thank you so much Kat and James! We will definitely make the drive across town to come see them again. If you're in Bakersfield and wanting sushi and/or Teppanyaki I highly recommend Tokyo Garden. Now I've been to lots of different teppenyaki places and here the portions were on the smaller end. It is a bit pricey and normally I don't mind spending for this food and entertainment. But again portions were small not worth the price. Servers were attentive and always kept glass filled. Nice atmosphere. Grills were clean and everything was clean on that end. Bathrooms were clean juat don't care for thr bathrooms being bear the kitchen. You have to go thru area where cooks are and area of cleaning supplies to get to bathrooms. Tokyo Garden's my favorite tepanyaki place in town, their food is the best overall, in my opinion. The fried rice is always fluffy and delicious, the vegetables are cooked perfectly, and the proteins are grilled EXACTLY how they're supposed to be. Their sushi is also fresh and tasty as they're owned by the same family that owns Miyosh/Miyoshi Sushi restaurants, I love the Yellow Submarine roll. The restaurant is in a pretty nondescript building on the corner of a pretty nondescript shopping center. The area surrounding the restaurant can be pretty rough, but we've never had any issues. The only reason that I didn't give them the fifth star is that their business decisions go back and forth too often. There was a time when they didn't charge a mandatory gratuity fee of 18% for parties of 6 or more, I understand that servers need to be taken care of too, but they went as far as releasing a note on their menu talking about how they weren't going to do that anymore because the service should speak for itself... for the record, their service has always been excellent, I just don't like being made to tip a specific amount, I always tip generously on my own, usually. The 18% charge is back, so plan accordingly. Another issue I had this last time was that they switched from breast meat chicken to thigh meat. Flavor-wise, thigh meat is delicious, but it's also cheaper and the menu price does NOT reflect that. In our current financial climate EVERYTHING is going up in cost, understandable that they'd want to save money, but I don't like being bait and switched. The menu states that it's chicken, it does not specify white meat or dark meat, so it's a moot point. Overall, I really enjoy coming here as the atmosphere is fun and celebratory, I just wish that they'd be more consistent with their charges. read more

Decided to try this place for the first time today. I typically go to ShoGun because I love the fun atmosphere and full bar, BUT their AC isn't currently working and my gf and I didn't feel like enduring the terrible heat. I had high hopes for this place seeing as it is slightly more expensive than ShoGun and I've always heard really good things about it. WELLLLLLLLLLLL, it's not in the safest area. There's a lot of homeless people just walking around outside. We were sat promptly for our reservation time at 5:45pm. Our server was so sweet and nice. She was super attentive and ready to help us with whatever we needed. I ordered the filet mignon and chicken, while my gf ordered the shrimp. One thing that ruined the food for me was the fact that they use thigh meat for the chicken. I get that thigh meat is juicy and all, BUT for $36 I would expect chicken breast. At all the other tepenyaki restaurants I've gone to, they always use chicken breast. I am not a fan of it so I did not eat the chicken. Not even a bite. Filet mignon was ok. It was underseasoned and bland. My girlfriend asked our chef (his name was Juan) to add more seasoning and soy sauce to her shrimp and he refused. I was a little bothered because at the end of the day, WE are the ones paying for our food and we know what we like. Fried rice was good. Don't see how they could ruin fried rice so that was good. Veggies were good. Just the meats and whatnot could definitely use more seasoning or the chefs should at least oblige when asked to add more soy sauce . Still tipped our chef because common courtesy. Just wish he would've took our requests for our food . Overall, not the worst place, but we definitely won't be coming back. read more

This is one of my very favorite places to eat in Bakersfield! The food is outstanding and the service is just as good! I am picky and don't like sushi, fish or seafood. On a visit here with coworkers years ago they dared me to try the yellow submarine. Of course I did and it was like a party in my mouth. The soy wrap, spicy tuna and even fried shrimp. No other time would I eat any of those things on their own but this is fire! The teppanyaki is so good and a lot of fun. The rice and veggies are my favorite but the chicken and steak are delicious as well. Everyone else I go there with love all of the seafood. Make sure if what you're ordering is available at the time. 2nd experience. Went with my parents as a double date and got teppanyaki Different greeter was not welcoming either. Our food time was 6:15. We sat down and server took our order It took more than an hour for the cook to start making the food We ordered two sushi rolls they brought one and the server forgot to place the order in the second one. I eventually asked the server and they brought it out 10 mins later. They also force you for every person to get a dinner entree where the cheapest is 22. The menu doesn't tell you what is included in these deluxe or special options so make sure to ask. If you decide to share it is an $8 dollar up charge. Here where management needs to improve. You are charging us $8 dollar because we are sharing but you can't include a damn side of miso soup or salad with it? Does that $1 dollar cost for a side of miso or salad really eat into your profits? What about charging for half price more and including 50% more food? Show was fine. Not sure if the extra food up charge is worth the experience we got. Probably won't come back. read more

I've been coming to TG since I moved here 12 years ago! Our most recent dining experience was at the teppanyaki grill. We had a larger party, but they easily accommodated us. Our cook was absolutely entertaining and made the experience enjoyable. We left feeling beyond full and had enough leftovers to enjoy the next day. Always a pleasure to dine here. read more
