This is my second time eating here. The food was amazing the first time and it did not let me down this time. I had the amazing MEAT 'N THREES for $45 great soup starter followed by MARY'S BUTTERMILK FRIED CHICKEN with rosemary honey. With 3 amazing sides, Brussels sprouts, mac, and cheese with breadcrumbs, and cheddar grits. Everything was great all the way down to the BUTTERSCOTCH & CHOCOLATE POT-DE-CREME butter crunch dessert They are conveniently located near Bart and other forms of transportation should you not drive. The staff is great. If I were to give any negative feedback it would be the drink I got that was in the smallest cup of life. Burger- dry bun/burger. Starving teenagers would not eat it. Brisket- so dry we had to dump bbq sauce on it to swallow it. Alerted the waiter. She brought manager over. Who informed us maybe our teenagers were "just being teenagers"- ??? Full bill arrived (overpriced)- nothing removed/ no apology for horrible meal. My colleagues and I frequently come to Town Hall for Happy Hour. 90% of the time, we have a fantastic experience. This review is in no way reflective of the great service we normally receive from the staff. However, we've had multiple **terrible** experiences with one specific staff member. Don't know his name.. but he might be in a manager / host role (tall, lanky male with spiky bleached blonde hair). If this were only 1 instance, we would have (and DID) overlooked the situation. The past few times we've visited, he has been extremely rude and dismissive to us. Our most recent visit was the last straw.. despite how much we like Town Hall, we will not be returning. It's truly a shame because we have a fantastic experience every time he's not here. read more

I ordered the tuna tartare with the Tabasco aioli. It came over fried green tomatoes that were breaded in yellow corn meal, traditional. Kind of an odd pairing but I love tuna. Seriously bland. So bland I had to add salt which is a huge peeve of mine. I don't believe food should need salt once prepared. That did not help...at all it was terrible. The texture of the tuna was good but the Tabasco sauce concoction was way over powering and just tasted like spicy vinegar which is why I only like Tabasco in my bloody Mary. But I figured if they are offering such bold flavor they would nail it. When I told the bartender what I thought he told me to eat the tuna and tomato together. Well duh, of course I did that already. He was not concerned and did not offer any solution including something as simple as asking if I would like to see the menu again. Parking is NOT the best here but it helps that BART and Muni station is 5 minute walking distance and the Temporary Terminal is literally across the street. They have a patio that is right in front of the entrance but the inside is such a great set up! A communal table located near the entrance on the right, bar area on the left, and all the way in the back is the dining area. The inside is very spacious and the décor is attractively decorated and compliments the wonderful, friendly staff. I hear lunch time and happy hour is golden here, meaning you won't be disappointed! They have a small happy hour menu but it's straight to the point. THINGS TO ORDER: Lunch time- WasSup with that Fried Chicken, tho? OMG, Flavorful, juicy and so pleasing to my taste buds! Town Hall does a great job of offering safe outdoor seating during COVID, both covered and uncovered. Even on a cold night, their sheltered and heated patio was the perfect urban environment to grab a drink and a bite to eat. It's extremely unique to be sitting in a courtyard, looking up, and seeing San Francisco's skyscrapers surrounding you. Apart from the environment itself, the staff is extremely friendly, and the food and drinks are tasty. I had higher expectations coming here from the recommendation of others in this area. I was disappointed in the dishes I had ordered but certainly not by the service and venue itself. I will have to return to try out a few other items. I came for lunch so maybe dinner would be a better option. Warm Ham and cheese toast - Basically was an eggs benedict which I usually LOVE. The egg was poached perfectly however the choice of bread was not enjoyable. I couldn't tell you what it actually was due to how soaked, dense, and soggy it was from the sauce. Every bite was very heavy with no elements in this dish that adds brightness or freshness. Crispy okra - This is a side dish so you may overlook it on the menu. This was my favorite of the three! Piping hot okra fried in a cornmeal batter. Crunchy, crispy, savory, and not too slimy on the inside. Well balance of texture. Duck confit salad - The duck was overcooked. I didn't even need to cut into it to be able to tell. Just dry! The salad requires a fork and knife to cut into small manageable pieces with a very light dressing. read more

The food here is so delicious! Most everything we ordered was top notch, I'm still dreaming about the buttery, delicious jalapeno cornbread. I enjoyed the tuna tartare and it was incredible - my boyfriend ordered the ribs and said the flavor was good, as was the corn muffin, but the ribs weren't very tender and difficult to enjoy. No wet napkins were provided so he struggled with the fork and knife to get the meat off the bone. The service was okay, everyone appeared overwhelmed and stressed. But the atmosphere in the restaurant is so pleasant, the decor is stunning so overall we had a very memorable evening! read more

WOW, seriously never coming back again. Had a reservation for 7 at lunchtime and did not have to wait, until we got to our table. At first our server came to see if he could start any drinks for us, and we needed a few minutes. After that, we had a horrible time. Drinks took over 25 minutes to get to us and food took 35 minutes. We ordered two sides of fried okra and the server never put it on our bill, so it never arrived. One mistake is forgivable, but we had a ginger beer that was on our bill and it never arrived. Then food came incorrect. We ordered a turkey torta and roasted beef, but they brought two roast beef and charged us that instead of the torta. Also, they brought over the shrimp noodle dish to our table but no one ordered it, which shows how messed up the service is. We also asked for more bread 4 times and did not get it til after we finished our food. The big thing is that our boss asked when we ordered our food, to also bring the check as we were having a work lunch, but the server did not do it til much after we finished. The food itself is tasty, but the service is SO bad that I rather not waste my money. I never have this experience at Per Diem (which is the much better choice in the area), or Salt House. read more

I have been a frequent customer at Townhall for over decade and have always recommended this place to friends and travelers alike when asked what are my favorite places to eat in the city, it has been in my top five. Unfortunately, after my experience yesterday at lunch, things have changed. This is not about the quality of the food, or the service. This review is about the pricing of my meal which by any standard was excessive. Jambalaya, a traditional creole dish, which I grew up on, as my mother being from New Orleans, used to make for us, weekly, as it is one of my lifetime favorites. Traditionally rice, the holy trinity, with chicken, sausage and shrimp. Standard staples in a creole jambalaya no matter where you go, except here at Townhall now. I ordered the jambalaya with sausage & shrimp, biscuits and water (no longer drinking sodas, etc.). Granted I knew they would change extra for the shrimp. Townhall charges extra for an andouille jambalaya, a chicken one and the shrimp one (an up charge for the standard basics of the dish). Any LA restaurant would be appalled to do this to their customers and to their cuisine. The jambalaya was good but a bit under-seasoned for this particular dish. The biscuits were the star of the show and there were plenty to go around for this small yet flavor packed appetizer. My bill including tax and tip was a whopping $45 dollars for lunch I remind you. This was the first time, and it will be my last time that I will ever pay $45 for one person fisr a small bowl of "mediocre" jambalaya. Unfortunately, it was such a disappointment! With prices like this at lunchtime, I am not surprised that they are able to stay in business. I enjoy going out to eat and do so regularly alone and with my family and friends. But it looks like the tech crowd in and around Townhall's area, has made them a victim of the price gauging that has taken over over the city . Places like Townhall who had a stellar reputation of serving delicious meals for a reasonable price, are now contributing to the new culture of providing mediocre food for twice the price for the "just because we will pay more for anything crowd." Thanks for the 17 year run Townhall, it was good while it lasted. I will continue to make my own traditional jambalaya and prefer to now offer my business to other traditional creole restaurants in the Bay Area who hold true to the preparation of traditional dishes. This is my first time doing a review, but this place was quite pricey so I thought I should give my honest opinion. We had the tuna tartare for an appetizer and the tuna was good, but the fried 'chip' it came with was so extremely deep fried. I couldn't even taste the tuna over the oil flavor. I also ordered the Lowcounty fish stew, which was just seafood in a watery flavorless broth. Definitely do not recommend. HOWEVER! Bonus #2 - Was kindly convinced to give oysters a shot again...It's basically been a 5-year hiatus since I was bamboozled by a bad oyster packed with gut-curdling brine and sand...blahhh...that was the impetus that sparked my half decade ban on oysters. This time around, although Conan was no where to be seen, the pot de creme (decadently creamy and sweet) was still good . . . as were the wonderfully and incongruously moist fried chicken, the old school style veal meatballs, and the fried oysters. I loved Town Hall and glad we ate here for dinner a few days ago when we were in town for the 3-day weekend. We literally stumbled across this place since we had to get a quick bite to eat before we met some friends at a nearby club. We couldn't find a spot that had immediate seating or a place that the three of us can agree on. Finally after walking around aimlessly at 8:45 in the evening, we saw Town Hall from a close distance. Fortunately, they had a table available for us, big plus! We got seated with our menus right away, another plus. We expressed our rush to get our meal and got it quick, big fat plus. Our dinner was knee-buckling good...as good as it gets with the five stars it deserves! I got the short rib and hangar steak which came with tater tots and some greens. It was so flavorful and left me comforting-full, not over the top that I need to go to bed full. My boyfriend got the pork loin and pork belly dish, his was good but I was enjoying my dish a lot more. The bathroom is a few flights upstairs, which can make you catch your breath if you're not in shape, lol. It's nice they have a private dining room upstairs, but it's kind of away from all the hustle and bustle of the restaurant downstairs, which I would prefer to be in the middle of if I'm spending a good amount of money on a great meal. I would go back again, the menu was simple but I loved the creativity of the pairings on their dishes. Trying to find last minute reservations for a party of 5 on a Saturday night to a half-decent restaurant in the city? Good luck there. A (not so) quick tour through Open Table led me to Town Hall, which at least has a good quantity, if so-so quality, in its Yelp reviews. Naturally, we arrived promptly at our reservation time, only to be told that the table earmarked for us had a group of people wholly unwilling to depart anytime soon. Thus it was that we found ourselves at the bar for about an hour, waiting for that reservation which was supposed to undermine said wait. (Somewhat) luckily for us, the manager and host were profusely apologetic. We were comped our (very delicious) craft cocktails at the bar, and brought a couple of appetizers gratis as well. I do recommend those crispy okra. Or was it green beans? My memory fades. Yelp describes Town Hall as American (New), but fancy southern could also be apt. There's a distinct southern influence that permeates the menu, but it's just an influence, not the overwhelming taste and flavor. For example, the barbeque shrimp, my favorite of the appetizers we ordered, had that southern flair but didn't exactly scream N'awlins to me. Oysters are west coast, not Gulf, although that could just be season (or, more likely, proximity). I thoroughly enjoyed my main course, the Yelp-approved fried chicken. Buttermilk coated, the chicken came in a faux cast iron and was thoroughly huge. Three chicken pieces atop a large heaping of mashed potatoes has my seal of approval. All the mains were big plated and hearty, which I get fits the Southern style. All in all, Town Hall reminded me of the proliferation of comfort food slash American New restaurants that permeate Chicago. Out there, Ruxbin does it best, but Town Hall is also very reminiscent of places like The Bristol and Carriage House, and much better than overpriced downtown joints that shall remain unmentioned. But was it worth the hour wait (even with comped alcohols), when we could have picked somewhere more lauded sans reservations while waiting at the bar anyway? I have to say no to that. read more

It was good, perfectly cooked and standard but the accompaniment of jambalaya was delicious with great flavors and hints of andouille sausage. Yum! Also ordered the fried okra, along with the starter: BBQ shrimp, Worcestershire sauce, garlic herb toast which was FANTASTIC...it was grilled shrimp with a very complex tomato-based sauce which was worth the carbs and calories! had i known earlier, i would've just placed another order and made it my meal...it was THAT good Service was good..waiter was 'no-nonsense' and had the professionalism for more of an upscale-french, fine dining establishment as he was on-point and of the old school on hospitality (not much interaction). On my first visit to Town Hall, I found the food good but not particularly inspired. All that changed over lunch. The seafood chowder with sourdough cracckers knocked my socks off, only to be outdone by the chicken salad. This folks, was the chicken salad of all chicken salads- crisp green beans, lovely lettuce with lovelier dressing, bacon, baked tomatoes, all atop a perfectly seasoned chicken breast. My buddies and I walked into Town Hall, unaware of the restaurant's demographics. Apparently, there were enough baby boomers in there to put a strain on Social Security. And that's cool, I like dining with older folks and sponge in their wisdom. But maybe because we were three young cats, we feel like we weren't getting the type of customer service that our older counterparts were getting. The waitress just kinda frosted flaked on us for most of the meal, which made dinner a low key challenge. I had to eat my oyster with a butter knife lol. The food was amazing grace amazing though. I suspect that they drench their vegetables in butter because the broccoli was super soft and super flavorful (comes with the Fried Chicken) My friend also put his stamp of approval on the Brussels sprouts.(comes with the Porkchop) My favorite part of dinner was stealing my friend's apple sauce.(Porkchop) The sauce was Johnny Appleseed good. Best I've ever had. But then again, I've only had those cafeteria ones to compare it with. But based on our experience, it seemed as if Town Hall isn't the best place for younger folks. And since I won't be cashing in my 401k for many moons, I don't see myself coming back anytime soon. read more

Oh my goodness! Why did I not try this place sooner?! My girlfriends didn't quite recommend this place but I think I know why. It's more of a happy hour, after work FiDi crowd (think they are cool about this) but the issue is, they serve amazing southern style American- a.k.a disgustingly good high calorie dishes. As a self-declared foodie, I have no issue with that! Faith Warm Ham and Cheese Toast with Poached egg and jalapeño cream is so damn good! I was there for dinner so when this was recommended, my initial reaction was 'meh', (as anything with eggs to me feels like a brunch menu) but after a bite, I was just blown away. The smooth cream with a little jalapeño kick compliments the crispy toast and the flowing yolk from the poached egg... adds intensity to the flavour. I'm not even going to mention about the fried okra. Buttermilk fried chicken was so tender and cooked to perfection. Good quality chicken was used. Good sized meals and the bartender was very nice and attentive. The gentleman next to us ordered the BBQ Shrimp and I can't get my mind off it. Will be back very soon to try it out. I'm adding this place as one of my favourite place for comfort foods in SF. read more

I liked the ambience and decor I ordered the fried chicken and the bf ordered the ribs. Fried chicken comes with gravy collard greens and cornbread pudding. 3 pieces of chicken; thigh, drumstick, and breast. The skin on the chicken was great but the chicken was a little dry and they didn't have much gravy so I asked for some on the side. The ribs were dry rubbed style with a side of BBQ sauce. They were pretty dry ribs too The portions were big but food is mediocre... Don't think I'll be rushing back anytime soon. It's nothing I crave for...
