SO DISAPPOINTED!!! Tonight was the worst! Sat down to a semi-celebratory dinner with the family (3 young kids and 5 adults in our party) and received terrible service and even worse accountability about it. Long story short...ordered 15 mins in, 1 hr later still waiting for food and refills. Requested an update on food to be told 10-15 mins as multiple times my chipotle pasta crossed my table to families that had been there a faction of the time. We've all been in a spot where someone let us down and we had to pick up the slack (short staffed was their reasoning) the difference is saying "sorry". It just would have been the right thing to do to say...hey we're short staffed and I see you have kids here ready for dinner, it may take longer to get your food out...then let the table decide what to do. Instead, they bought us a bill for the drinks and a new excuse. (never got the food) Note to Kristy and TH management, good service after a regrettable customer experience might have included an apology. I realize that TH is a popular spot and they don't need my business...but beware because their not doing much to deserve yours! read more

First hoe does one not bring the customer their first pitcher of margaritas before the food runners bring their meal?? Carnitas were excellent as was the Del Rey quesadilla. The 2 item combo was good except the menu did not mention mole on the chicken tamale. The manager was sorry for the margarita mixup and gave us a 2 for 1 drink card. I came here for my 21st birthday just to get some drinks with a friend, and I found out that you get a free shot on your birthday! The drinks were good, and the server (her name was Sierra) was very friendly and professional. The only issue I had was that the service was a little slow, though I think I can attribute that to how busy the bar was at the time, and not the server herself. Worst food in town. They can't even cook beans and rice properly. The $3 tacos are bland, tiny, and have nothing in them. The fish was over cooked, dry, extremely salty. None of our table ate more than 3 bites of food. I offered our take home box to a homeless man, and after 1 bite he threw it to the dogs, who also refused to eat it. I was very disappointed by Tres tonight. My friend and I were having a Galentines date tonight. We showed up and asked how long the wait would be. After we were told it was a 45 min wait we added our name to the list. We waited an hour because we saw they were busy. After the hour, we walked in and asked how much longer it would be. We were told "we closed at 8 so we're no longer are seating people". We asked why they couldn't have at least texted us to let us know they weren't going to be able to seat us, that's when the host replied "we went down the list, but forgot to text you". I think when the college kids are in town-it's just another loud bar with half naked girls, frat boys and really good liquor if you order the right thing. Try the margarita in a tall glass. The staff tells me it has less of the margarita mix but the same amount of alcohol as the margarita glass. $5 top of the shelf tequila shots. Free drink on your birthday. Clean ladies restroom and the mirror on the walk as your walking to it is awesome. Strike a pose. Lmao. Their hostesses aren't always the friendliest and are too busy trying to look cute than work for their minimum wage per hour salary but eh who cares they are not the ones serving the food or drinks. Really great service and food, however it seems the place switched management and its very disappointing. It seems like the new manager has no idea what he is doing and is always very frantic when working. I am a regular at Tres and I feel like the whole environment of the establishment changed when it went under new management. I had received a confirmation email and number but was still told that there was no record and that they would be booked all day. My daughter and I went to Tres Hombres for lunch the other day. It was practically empty yet the service acted as though it was rush hour! It took forever to get a waiter and get our food. Ahhh, the food. The guacamole had no flavor or kick. It was mushed up avocados. We ordered a simple dish, quesadillas. It was bland, no spices, and they got the orders wrong. The ONLY reason this place is getting ANY stars from me (and I typically never write reviews) is I am in LOVE with their Avocado Margarita. It's creaminess balances so well with the sour. The first time I saw it on the menu I couldn't imagine the flavors mixing, but they do. Truly amazing. The downfall? I've tried this place on four separate occasions now. Different times of day, season, different occupancy levels. Every single time the service has been beyond horrible. This most recent visit on 10/26 we we seated for late lunch (1 PM) perhaps 10-12 tables occupied, if that. Our waitress did not arrive to even offer water or drinks for 15 minutes! I mean, I always enjoy the ambiance of the patio, but when you are seated with your overly salted chips and salsa, you need SOMETHING to wash it down. After finally placing our order (drinks and food at the same time since we had more than enough time to figure that out) we saw our waitress exactly 4 more times. Food/drink delivery, check drop, check pickup. The visit before this, our waitress again was unusually slow to even introduce herself and took our drink/food order and disappeared. Our drinks were served by someone other than our waitress, cool, not a big deal. Our food order was completely forgotten. I still think she totally forgot to place it at all. But, perhaps the kitchen lost it. An HOUR LATER (not joking, when you are starving you notice these things) our food came out. The waitress did acknowledge some sort of mishap with the order, but it was in no way compensated with perhaps a free round of drinks (we had two while we waited and another with food) or a slight markdown on the bill. The entire time I kept thinking I should just cross the street and go order something from B Street Bistro. I was that hungry and sick of waiting. My other visits only stand out for the same reasons. An awesome margarita, mediocre food and terrible/slow service. I swear the only reason I will keep going is if that avocado margarita stays on the menu. read more

I am a Chico State Student and have attended this school for almost four years now. I have never had a great experience at Tres Hambres. It is not an authentic Mexican restaurant and the reason to why people go is only for the location and ambiance- not at all for prices and quality of food. I believe if this was located somewhere else it would be out of business. Ate lunch on the patio recently. Food was awful. My Husband and I ordered salads, itthey were limp, lifeless and I what I would expect from Applebee's. Lettuce cores and ends were left in the lettuce mix and they were not delicious or appetizing. Nachos were ordered also and they were drowned in a watery liquid, most were left on the plate. Manager did end up taking off nachos, but didn't take care of the salads. I do love the patio atmosphere at Tres, but with so many new patio locations opening downtown I will be sticking to drinks at Tres for now... Kind of sad since Tres is a Chico institution. Although once a staple for me in Chico, I wouldn't have considered it a favorite. The margaritas, taco bar, prices, service and space are all good and it's conveniently located right around the corner from campus in downtown. Accumulative it's a great place to visit. Is it unique? Does it offer something that a million other Mexican restaurants do? Nah, not really. Just a young crowd with hot servers...which I imagine on its own would be enough for some people (note, Mas Sake in the Marina). Special recommendation: My friend swears by the chingalingas. When I moved here, I was told this was THE place to go, you just had to. Well I'm not sure why because it really isn't that amazing, sorry. The food here is okay, but for what you're getting you're paying too much. They do have good burritos and I tried the black bean burger before which was really good. They used canned/frozen veggies for some of their food though, you can tell just by looking at it. And I'm starting to thing the margaritas that I've been getting here and the ones the other reviewers get are from different places. They just aren't that good-there I said it! They're just so watered down and expensive-its just ice, fruit/flavor, and tequila, come on now. I think they do use real fruit for some of them, a blackberry margarita I got before had seeds in it so I'll give them bonus points on that. Plus it takes quite a while to get your drink, even when it's not busy. I actually did see my drink get made in a timely manner once-it was unfortunately sitting at the bar for nearly 10 freaking minutes before the server brought it over! What really kills it for me is the staff. The hostesses always have a stick up their ass it seems. And I can honestly say I've never has a great waiter here. Always, always my friends and I have someone who's so lackluster. Some take their sweet time dropping off grub and drinks (you can see the food waiting to go out at the kitchen from some seats). This is often due to the waiters bros coming in and they have to go chat it up for a while. Many have an attitude and a obvious lack of enthusiasm. Why it took this long, I don't even know 3. Wouldn't let me order a discounted drink ONE MINUTE after happy hour ended. A large group of us met here for dinner to celebrate a friend's birthday. Luckily we had made reservations ahead of time because they were packed! Being packed also means it's extremely loud in here. We couldn't really hear what people were saying at the other end of our table because it was so loud in there. The menu has the typical Americanized Mexican food, some fresher/less cheesy items like ceviche and steamed mussels, and some things that don't even belong like a pulled pork quesadilla and cheeseburgers. At least they try to cater to everyone? I was happy to be able to order a burrito without the rice and beans. Well, I should be clear - the rice and beans are inside of the burrito and do not come on the side. Burritos come in two sizes. I opted for the small; it still was huge. So just be aware of how hungry you really are before you go thinking that you can finish a large one! I chose the Papa burrito (pork verde). I've eaten at Tres Hombres for as long as I've lived in Chico (12 years). I love the location and find their food to be consistent and tasty. As a vegan, I usually order the same thing every time. First, their salsa and chips are great! I have to be very careful not to fill up on them while I wait for the main course. I've enjoyed their lunch special black bean tostada salad many, many times during lunches with my omnivore co-workers. I ask the server for the following: no cheese, no guacamole (they put mayo or sour cream in it), roasted veggies, add sliced avocado, cilantro or mango vinaigrette. This is a pretty filling lunch! Since their new re-opening with outside dining, they offer a black bean burger, but because it has egg whites in it, it is not vegan. The servers are consistently helpful and willing to answer questions on the food and to make substitutions. read more

Go for the margaritas! They are the prime reason to visit this restaurant. I highly recommend a blended passion fruit with salt on the rim. The food is not amazing, but is good. The staff can be hit and miss. Recently my friends and I placed our drink order and had to send it back THREE times because the girl didn't write it down correctly. The bar tender got lazy the first time and dumped our non-blended drinks into the blender and served them to us watery. They got it right on the third try but the waitress was rude and blamed us for the problem. We were never offered an apology. Again...go for the margaritas. read more

The only reason to come to Tres, as far as I can tell, is to get your margarita on. I LOVE their raspberry, strawberry, and mango margaritas. They're overly sugary and alcoholic, which is pretty much what I'm going for. Do not order food. Seriously. I have tried to eat here half a dozen times and it's just sad. They use the microwave like it's the best thing in the world. My rice is always crispy and dry, just like as if it were microwaved. So only go here if you're looking to get a little tipsy and munch on free chips and salsa. We were in Chico for a weekend and our taxi driver recommended this place as it had "the best margaritas in town". I love margs and Mexican food so it sounded like a great idea. Our driver didn't warn us about the crappy service and food though. Service was so bad that it became the joke of the group all weekend. And even when we got back home. Any restaurant we go to now we say: "Service was way better here!" or "Hey! at least we are getting service here" . Our not so friendly server Jessica only came by to take our food and drink orders but didn't check on us after that. I saw her check on other tables right by us and even bring birthday shots to them but nothing even close to full attention for our group. She lacked the common courtesy to simply pop in and say: "Hi are you still doing okay over here?" Not sure what her deal was. Luckily another server came by way times more than she did to check on us , refill our chip baskets , and ask us how our days were etc. Two stars for him! Wish I got his name. Food wasn't great. My boyfriends dish was cold and my other friend was missing the veggies that came with her meal. I've had better tacos but they weren't terrible. Jessica was with a group of servers singing happy birthday to the table behind us and luckily remembered to bring the forgotten veggies after we stared her down and got her attention. service was great! they do have a happy from 4-6 but we were running late so we didn't get to indulge in that. we did order a mai tai and island margarita to drink, the mai tai did not taste right but our server happily took it off the bill for us!! the ceviche was to DIE FOR, i could've eaten that as just my meal alone. the penne pasta was alright, i wouldn't order it again. the mahi mahi tacos tasted like CHICKEN!!! overall, the inside is really cute and the service is great. ill be back to try the happy hour!!! read more

I really don't get why Chicoans are all about Tres Hombres. The atmosphere is nice and the hostesses are always attractive...and thus ends the redeeming qualities of Tres Hombres. The food is okay, nothing special, the drinks are WAYY overpriced, it's incredibly noisy, and the wait is almost always guaranteed ridiculous. It's a good place to take out of towners who don't want to get too dressed up but don't want to have drinks and get VD at a smelly bar, which Chico has an abundance of. read more

5 stars for their fresh fruit Margaritas!! But... I used to love the tacos, specially the fish tacos.... however, sometimes the fish is fresh and yumz.... sometimes it is rancid. I always order one basic taco and a fish taco so if the fish is extremely fishy and gross I have something to eat still. But shouldn't they take care of making sure the fish is good?? Probably so. The service here was the highlight of my experience, but the food wasn't bad either. The gluten-free nature of some of the food is dubious, so you're best to stick with simply choices, like salad and chicken. I didn't get the sense that the wait staff really stand behind the gluten-free label. That being said, I could not get enough of the corn chips and salsa, which they replenished TWICE. Now that deserves a star all on its own. My only qualms are the pricing for things like the guacamole and promo drinks, neither of which were great value. I come here for the ambiance and the drinks...nothing more. Chico is really lacking in upbeat fun places to bring out of town guests, so I always end up bringing company to Tres. The peach avocado margarita was really good last visit. However, our server (who was being trained) made no connection to our table, interrupted us over 5 times, and thought I guess because of the bleach blond highlights and over abundance of tanning cream, she was too cute to have to work hard at making her table happy :( I ordered tacos and the beans and rice were cold and although they were spread out over the large plate, probably added up to a tbsp in size! $10.00 and I was still hungry and suffering from dry mouth due to my tacos having no moisture what so ever... Anyways, if you just want a good drink and somewhere that is fun with a nice patio in Chico, Tres is it. Otherwise, stay clear. read more

I just returned from a dinner with friends at Tres Hombres and I must say I had some of the worst service I have ever experienced. You might think they were busy. Not at all. We had to get our drinks from the bar and then it went down hill from there. The only time we ever saw our waitress is when she was clearing our plates. Why does everything have corn in it?! There are many better Mexican food restaurants in Chico with a more authentic menu. Most of the people I know that really enjoy Tres go there for the booze. As someone who doesn't drink much, I can't honestly weigh in on that portion of the joint.
