Cold, rainy days are the best for ramen or pho. Felt like Ramen and trying a new place. Umami makes some seriously good black garlic tonkatsu ramen. I added the buttered corn and glad I did. Corn was buttery and crisp, nice texture to add. The broth was crazy good. The black garlic is a favorite of mine and was perfect. The noodles, mmmmmm some of the best I have had. Nice chew to them, great texture. The egg was cooked perfectly, the pork was perfect, might add more next time. The spinach in the bowl was great, worked very well. For my first review of Umami I said a bunch of stuff about the Ramen being four stars and the service being five. I also blabbered on about the noodles and broth. I think I complimented the bamboo shoots and eggs. I probably critiqued something. Nothing's changed but the fact that there is no longer one thing I feel I can rate beyond perfection for me at Umami. Noodles not perfect? What was I talking about?! I keep coming back. I consistently fall in love with the owner/chef and his food. It's always five stars for me and that's every mark from food to friendliness to cleanliness. Even the green tea has a special place in my heart. I want this place to succeed. I want them to stay. If they left I would probably cry. The chef is running specials now (I tried the dipping noodles). That's awesome and I hope everyone tries to encourage his new idea. He hasn't raised his prices ($$) even though he's in Happy Valley ($$$$) and the quality remains. I always say that perfect bowl is waiting somewhere for everyone. Guess what ... I got a fever ... and the only prescription is more ramen! Seeking happiness in Happy Valley just got a whole lot easier thanks to discovering Umami Ramen with kinda yummy ramen. A bowl of Umami broth, noodles, and chashu are a harmony that even THE Bruce Dickinson would declare a hit. The platinum sensation for me was a warm Shio Ramen with salt broth and add-ons of spicy seasoning and and extra chashu pork. It was the cure for my winter blues. A less inspiring ramen offering was the namesake Umami Bowl that was light on flavor and interest. Wow! Really really good customer service. so glad we yelped and found this place. Opens till 9pm which was perfect after a long day of shopping haul with family. Cozy environment and ambience, table & Park bench seating and again excellent customer service. Their ramen noodles are SOOOOoOooooooooo bomb! Speechless and literally just kept saying "omg so good, yumhhhmmm, slurp slurp". Their black garlic Tonkatsu was so special because it is both chicken n pork broth!! Also wasn't too garlicky or bitter, chef did it perfect! Best one I've had so far and my gosh ordering the spicy miso paste on the side for my shiro miso was such a good decision because it allowed me to add more as I go while I savor the rich creamy flavor from the broth. Cha siu pork belly was charred crispy and melts in mouth on some parts, hit the spot perfectly! Mom's vegetarian ramen was also and she allowed her to sub extra soft tofu and took our bamboo shoots at no charge. Price was very good compare to some fancy places that I've been to in north part of town, Hillsboro or downtown Portland. I'd come here again anytime I crave for ramen. I will ask for my pork belly extra charred next time. Only thing that had me disappointed was no takoyaki on their appetizer menu, but I'd rather a ramen joint excel in their ramen bowls than deep fried foods. read more

I came here to eat on my second day in town. As I am from a town in the east coast, I don't have access to good food like this. I got their chicken karrage appetizer and black garlic ramen. Both were very good. The chicken came with a mayo type dipping sauce. The brother for the ramen was very flavorful and the garlic just made it better. My eyes were more hungry than my stomach so I asked for extra noodles and I had to force myself to finish it. The ramen came with some spinach, soft boiled egg and slices of pork belly that had been stewed for hours as it just fell apart in my mouth. This is definitely one of the better ramen restaurants in Portland. I usually have to go out far to Beaverton for some good ramen, but I'm thrilled to have one just down the hill from my house. The Umami ramen was delicious. The broth had good flavor and the fried chicken was crispy. As for the Shoyu ramen, my sister said she enjoyed it very much. The chashu pork was amazing and literally melts in your mouth. Not to forget, the eggs were beautifully soft boiled and the service was great. I was pretty excited to see another Ramen place open up in Happy Valley! Prior to Umami, the selection here was... lacking. Umami has the standard fanfare of the different kinds of broth (miso, shoyu, shio) along very tasty noodles and cha-su as the protein. My bowl was great, though I think they can improve on the quality of the pork a little (my only minor complaint. If the meat improves then I'd give this place 5 stars) They also have a variety of other dishes, (gyoza, Kara age, donburi, etc) but since it just opened up, a lot of those dishes weren't ready yet. I'm assuming it was because we rolled in during their soft grand opening. The broth itself was very flavorful and didn't feel greasy (some places do get a little oily). Not sure if it was an off day or just the normal broth but it tasted very oniony. Also, we ordered it spicy and man they DO NOT HOLD BACK. I was sweating and may I eat Korean fire chicken in the daily, so that is saying something. The gyoza was amazing and would go back just for those! Also, the staff was great, nice and attentive. Ordered the umami bowl with veggies (corn & bean sprouts) subbed for chicken, plus added another egg. Server wasn't sure if corn could be not buttered, but I'm hoping it is. My order came out about 5 minutes after ppacement They forgot the extra egg but corrected the mistake with a second egg on the side in about 30 seconds. The eggs are not cooked in broth and have no real flavor, but they are a perfect soft boil. The seasonal green veggies that come on the soup are just green onions and bamboo. I was hoping for zucchini, oh well. Broth is slightly spicy (choice of not or spicy and i got spicy). Noodles seemed thin for ramen, but they were filling. Overall taste is okay, but I'm not super impressed. My impression is this is fast food ramen and serves that purpose. Food is inconsistent, have been here multiple times and the depth of the broth isn't the same. Chashu can either be perfectly cooked or overcooked, too inconsistent. Their bamboo shoots are done well, potstickers and karaage are flavorful and cooked well. The smell of cooked/burnt oil is also a negative, always smell like I was in the kitchen cooking after I leave this place. Best ramen in happen valley, but there isn't much competition unfortunately. I've been here twice now. Once when it first opened up and recently right after New Years 2020. I still have the same feedback as I did when I first tried it. I had the umami bowl with spice on the side. For the some reason, the broth wasn't as rich as I thought it would be. I thought it was more on the bland side. Noodles tasted as if they were packaged ramen. In regards to size of serving, a lot of noodles were given and good amount of protein. I ordered to-go from here and was a little disappointed. But I feel that's partially because ramen tastes better when you eat it there. Anyway I ordered 2 shoyu ramens for me and my bf. The broth was ok, I did like the spinach and amount of pork they gave us. Noodles were a bit hard but again, that's probably Bc it was to go. The ramen egg however was one of the best I've had! Soft boiled but not too gooey and sweet! You can tell it was marinated properly. It was $24 dollars in total which is normal for ramen but I was just disappointed with the flavor overall. I added their chili paste to it and it made it taste a little weird. Two weeks ago the flavor was bursting in my mouth. It was soft, light and flavorful, I couldn't stop eating it was just so delicious. Tonight the broth is blah bland not appetizing. When I ordered and went to pick up my husband said where did you get ramen from, I told him the same place as last time and he was shocked the ramen from 2 weeks ago was the same place we had visited in the past. Tried this place on a whim since we were stuck in bad traffic. I am very happy with our choice. I decided on the black garlic tonkatsu ramen.
