Great food, but no "roof deck". We splurged on a lavish meal with family on a Sunday night. All our dishes were either good or great--see details below. But, first, a complaint about the roof deck which took us a while to find...and when we did find it, we saw that it isn't a true roof deck, but rather a nice room with a retractable roof, which was not retracted on said 75 degree September night. I wish people would stop claiming it is the only roof deck in the North End when a true roof deck it definitely is not. Rant over. We ordered: --Drinks: Hot and dirty martini, excellent --Wine: Excellent bottle of Campaccio (Sangiovese blend), $80. --Lobster tacos. Good, but would have benefitted from more sauce and a soft rather than a hard shell. --Porcini soup. Very strong truffle flavor, to the point where it overpowered the porcini. It was as though someone made a quick roux with flour and truffle oil. --Filet mignon, 8 oz. Superb cut, perfectly cooked to medium rare. I had the peppercorn sauce and my son ordered the Umbria demi sauce--I preferred the peppercorn. --Gnocchetti al Cinghiale (gnocchi with wild boar sauce). So flavorful, one of the best dishes of the night. --Lobster dumplings. Good, but not subtle in terms of flavor. --Truffled gnocchi side. Good. Strong truffle flavor. --Lobster mashed potato side. Good, though a little too much lobster flavor, again, they have a problem with subtlety. --Burrata salad. Awesome. Gooey, pestoey, truffley. --Iceberg wedge salad. One of the best I've had, perfect balance of blue cheese, bacon, crispy lettuce. Final bill with tip: $560 ($140/person). Overall, a great meal but that's a lot of change to drop! There are lots of alternatives in Boston for such splurgy evenings. read more

My boyfriend and I really loved the service here. We sat at the bar and the bartenders really took the time to get to know us and take our order. We really loved Jean, he was amazing. We had met him before at Mare close by and he is such a good server. We ordered the Caesar salad, the onion rings, and the burrata. We were just having a light bite before we had other plans after. Embarrassingly bad service! Decor and ambiance, exceptional Food - bone in rib eye (88 dollars), ordered medium rare, was rare/blue. Would have sent it back if anyone asked how it was. Service - I can't even begin. 3 hours, 3 drinks. Waiter barely came by. Table wasn't cleared for 20 minutes. Glasses, I had to ask busboys to take them. Dinner ends, no offer of dessert, coffee or after dinner drinks. Waited 10 minutes, waiter comes over and says they're preparing a piece of cake for guest of honors bday. Doesn't ask if we want anything walks away. Cake and 6 spoons arrive shortly after. We wait 10 minutes for check and I ask the busboy to find the waiter. Check is delivered he walks away and it's the wrong invoice. We wait a few and I find the busboy again ask him to have the waiter deliver the right check. A few minutes later waiter comes over and asks if everything is ok. Has no idea we have the wrong check. I say dude, this is the wrong check and you've been slow all night. We're running late. Here's what you have to do, get the right bill delivered it, stay while we give your CC, take it, run it and bring it right back. Still was fair and tipped 15%. Where was the manager? He approached our table at one point when we were complaining to the waiter about waiting for something. He turned and walk away immediately. When spending this kind of money, you deserve adequate service at a minimum. This was so bad in a half empty restaurant at the end. Never in a million years would I go back. read more

So far I really like this place and will return! It's definitely on the pricey side, most appetizers were over $20. We went for a few drinks and to try some items on the menu. For food we ordered the lobster dumplings - there was a spot or two where I felt it could have been cooked a bit longer but overall this dish was delicious. I would recommend getting it as an appetizer to share because I don't know if it would be enjoyable as your entree. The lobster tasted very fresh, not fishy at all and this like lobster bisque that they are in? Scoop all that up. Maybe get the focaccia and dip that in it. Next up we got the surf and turf which is an appetizer. The flavors in this dish were very good. Scallop was perfectly cooked and the short rib melted in your mouth. The mashed potatoes even had visible shaves of truffle. I would easily order both of these again! If I try more I'll update my review. read more

"Delicious!!! We had the fried seafood appetizer which consisted of calamari, belly clams, shrimp and zucchini. My only complaint was there were only 3 clams. 80 percent was calamari. Wanted to take a moment to thank the staff at Umbria for an incredible experience this weekend. A big group of us came up from New York to visit our best friend for her birthday. She suffered the loss of her amazing father over the weekend. The staff here did an incredible job of catering to her situation, and facilitating a great dinner to celebrate both my friend's birthday and her father's life. I don't get to the North End much but made a special trip in to meet some friends for dinner, there were 6 of us last night. We were escorted to the rooftop lounge "MIA" with an energetic vibe, fire pits, bar, and high end patio furnishings. The menu is extensive with a nice selection of pasta, steaks, seafood and more...all of the food was excellent quality and cooked to perfection, we had one hiccup but the staff struggled to correct it in time so the management showed their sincere apologies with a generous concession with comp desserts etc. I highly recommend Umbria, we will be back! read more

Really good. Great wine choices, wait staff excellent, valet parking, great vibe. All three of us ordered the two pound stuffed lobster. It was pretty good, but not something I'd go back for. A ton of money, too much stuffing, couldn't find the small tail. No knuckles. Not much lobster mostly stuffing. My king crab appetizer was excellent but one leg for $109 was too much. Our food was so delicious and very well presented. We started with the lobster tacos and the buratta *chefs kiss* . The prime sirloin tartare appetizer was great. The meals... not so much. The seafood was very fishy and rubbery. The steak was cooked rare instead of medium rare. The sauce wasn't good either. Thoroughly disappointed with the food. Our waters were rarely filled and we were thirsty throughout our whole meals. My husband ordered a drink and never received it. At least our server was nice. I put into the special requests that my husband I got married earlier in the day. It was not once mentioned by staff. We came to Umbria for my boyfriend's birthday after making a reservation. We were brought to a quiet table away from the bar (which is what we requested), but didn't get service for about 15 minutes. Our drinks also took longer to come out, so we were halfway through our appetizers when they got to our table. The food was good- some highlights were the 8 oz filet, double mashed potatoes, and the lobster dumplings. Overall, we both felt like it was a bit overpriced for what it was, and while we'd be happy to go back we wouldn't rush to do so. read more

Top notch. We went there for a special birthday celebration and it was fantastic. The decor was new, inviting, and the tables were nicely spaced allowing us to have a nice conversation at our table without shouting. The WORST service I have ever had. Was in and out in 40 minutes (and we got drinks an app and a meal). Told our waitress no multiple times on if we were ready until she forced us. Not sure why we were forced in and out when there were 4 open 2 tables around us. Heard the table next to us complaining about the same thing. The food and drinks were fine but not worth it for the price. If you are going to charge steakhouse prices you should have steakhouse service. Parking is a bit is a disaster in the evening and the valet was full at the time of my reservation. Found a spot and headed to the restaurant for my friends birthday. First impression: Great interior but minimalist. We got dressed up for the evening out because we both thought there was a dress code. I asked the server about what kind they were but they did not know what type or variety, eventually we found out after finishing them. Waited awhile to ordered our meal, long enough for the manager to ask how our meal was and we let him know that we had not ordered yet. After that we started to get constant service. We shared the 24oz wet dry aged rib eye $88, Umbria demi glaze $5 (which is something for additional flavor) asparagus $16, truffle gnocchi $14, and 3 drinks $30. Then we finished with their signature skillet cookie $15. Overall it was an overpriced meal, the steak was cooked perfectly, the service lacked, and I'm not sure how the cookie was special since I've had better at a TGIFriday. I am former restaurant industry professionally. I completely understand why prices can get high for food and beverages. I know that it has been hard finding help, so, this review is more of a general observation and not a complaint. I was expecting more but I do not feel it is worth the hype. read more

This is a review for Mia Rooftop which is above Umbria. It is a new restaurant and doesn't have its own Yelp page yet. The new rooftop is still working out a few quirks but we had a pleasant experience overall. This was a dinner for two people. Our server was lovely and checked in on us regularly. They had bouncers at almost every entrance as well. We started our night with the Truffle Burrata which was creamy and delicious. The green slaw base was an afterthought and unnecessary, taking away from the dish's overall taste. We transitioned into our mains where we both got the 8 OZ. Prime Filet Mignon. Our steaks were accompanied by Bernaise and Porcini Demi signature sauces. We had three sides including the Baby Brussels Sprouts with pancetta and sweet black balsamic, Double Mashed Potatoes, and the Jumbo Asparagus. All three sides were incredible, filled with flavor, and worth their price. After such a great dinner, we were expecting an equally wonderful dessert experience. Unfortunately, both desserts were left to be desired. We had Umbria's Signature Skillet Cookie which had chocolate chip cookie dough, vanilla gelato, salted caramel, and streusel crumbs. Our second dessert was Burnt Cheesecake champagne blueberries and dulce de leche sauce. Both desserts while beautifully plated, were lacking flavor and the cookie was very oily. Our first drink of the night was Bricco's Famous Espresso Martini with absolut vanilla, bailey's, kahlua, frangelico, disaronno, espresso, raw sugar & cocoa rim. It was okay but for $21, I was expecting a lot more as it lacked espresso flavor (more cream than anything). We transitioned to a bottle of red during our main. To end the night we had limoncello shooters. The overall ambiance definitely felt like a rooftop. The dining table and chairs were patio furniture and the floor was tiled. Our meal cost over $600+ and we felt it was weird spending that much while sitting on patio furniture. They didn't have the roof open but think it would be a nice time if it were. There's no grout between the tiles which caused a few heels to get stuck. The purple lights outlining the walls and ceiling created an elevated experience. Overall, we enjoyed the dinner but with it being new, Mia has a few things to figure out. read more

The one way to describe my mood after leaving is - confused. I left hungry. My meal was one spoonful of pasta. My brother only got 5 ravioli type things. My friend ordered a ceaser salad with GRILLED salmon. They came out with paper thin raw salmon - most likely sushi grade - none the less. Bad?
