Beef Fajitas
Brad C.

Went here tonight for a team dinner. This one had excellent food and great service. The vibe is upscale TexMex just like the ones in Texas. The food was delicious. Our waitress was always available, had great recommendations for those in our party who had never been to an Uncle Julios before. We will definitely return the next time we are in town.

Great service and food. Greeted and served so quickly. Staff checks back regularly to refill drinks and see if we needed anything. Restaurant has great ambience. Bathroom was rather stinky. They need to fix that.

Seasoned Shrimp Fajitas for 1

Great team dinner here! Strong margaritas! Loved the queso dip! The shrimp fajitas with killer with the seasoned butter!

Walked in to a burnt smell. Skirt steak fajitas had a very strange cheap texture that tasted like dog food smell. The cilantro rice was disgusting. The cheese dip was like velveeta. The salsa they give to the table was bland and no flavor. I guess the piñata is the hype for this place. Don't bother eating here.

Reese's TableSide Guac!! Well...he made it

Table Side Guac !!! You can't go wrong. Fresh at its best....Reese was the man, that mixed it all down...you might have to doctor it up a bit after first serving...like a pinch more salt, a spoonful more of jalapeño's, and you got yourself a good table side Guac!! Thank you Reese!!! Managers, promote this young man...great personality and professionalism when communicating with us. Now, let's try these steak skirt fajitas!! We got our drinks, Guac, and still waiting on these entree....Hoping it's good.

Check from location, paid full price

We had Jessica as our server. Table side guac was great, the drinks were great. Jessica was nice, however we could tell she was rushing to get us out from when we were seated. This was verified as when we asked for the check, and made comments to give to the manager about how terrible the food was, she arrived with her apron in hand to deliver our full price check. Keep in mind we left our plates almost entirely full, I got three tacos and left 2 on the plate. Including letting our waitress know why. Don't get the new queso it's terrible, it's grainy and also comes with burnt onions to add a "smoky" flavor. My wife got the steak fajitas- they were also pretty bad. Little to no flavor on the meat at all which was surprising. Just tasted like bland beef. No marinade at all. My shrimp tacos, the shrimp were burnt to a crisp, to cover this up the kitchen covered them with salsa and a Crema sauce. They were equivalent to charcoal. When we sat down my napkin was also covered in stains and old food, I had to ask for a new set. To make this all worse, we were there around 4:00pm. The restaurant was mostly empty other than the bar. Having a manager come talk with us would have made this better. Especially as I just wanted someone to acknowledge this wasn't appropriate or normal service. Instead it kind of felt like this was the usual. We were celebrating tonight, for locals in the area. Stay to del friscos across the street. They have a much higher attention to detail and their guests. Here's our check, despite this all we still tipped $23.00 I hope this helps someone in the future, and management doesn't continue to let these standards slip.

Carnitas. Under the onion pile.

This place has a lot of potential... but I just think it falls short. The decor and vibe felt like it might have been top notch maybe 12-15 years ago - but now it needs a deep clean and some table tops refinished... the food was so so. I feel like my carnitas were overpriced. Very small portion for $23. Avocado had brown spots and was mushy. Wife's carne asada was charred. Won't be coming back.

Quesa-Birria

Food was disgusting honestly. I got the quesabirrilla, it was so dry and bland. The menu claimed it came with consume, but they served it with hot sauce. When I asked for the consume, the waiter had to grab a manager because he had no idea what I was talking about. When i finally got it, it was gross. Even more disappointingly, the waiter brought the check before we even received our food as his shift was ending. We tipped kindly, but given the terrible quality of food and issue with the consume, I would not have tipped that amount of the check was brought after. Not one apology from any service member about the mix up or terrible quality. We left hungry and disappointed. Would not come again

Barbacoa tacos!

I hadn't been here in years due to relocating but stopped in at 2pm today and sat at the bar with the bartender, Riley. The guac and chips were excellent, the barbacoa tacos were excellent and service was awesome! I'll definitely be back soon.

Rice
Claudia N.

The taco salad was good, I had it with skirt steak. My had enchiladas which were also good but not yet had hard chunks initially like they scraped it from the bottom of a skillet, however, after we told the server they did bring some fresh soft rice. The old fashioned was a little too sweet and they only had the bright red cherries. You used to have to wait a while on a Friday night to get in if you didn't have a reservation but I would say the restaurant was only 50-60% full this Friday night.

Tub of dirty dishes on the bar

Ok so, to say that my wife likes Uncle Julio's is an understatement. She LOVES their fajitas and always looks forward to our next visit, going all the way back to our time in Arlington VA where we discovered our love for the Uncle Julio's experience. Sad to say, this visit was disappointing in comparison. The food was decent, the service was quick, but we sat at the bar, which was dirty and cluttered and gross. I kid you not there was a bus tub of dirty dishes on the bar the entire time we were there. The bar back area was littered with empty bottles and other garbage. The dude bro bartender repeatedly touched the trash can and then made drinks without washing his hands and - true story - when dude bro accidentally knocked the freestanding drink specials menu into the trash can, he pulled it out and returned it to the bar top. Disgusting! We had two margaritas each. The drinks were ok but inconsistent. With a bit more effort and care this bar could be so nice.

Over the last four years, I've made more work trips to Brentwood than I can count--and I thought I…read morehad just about completed the local Mexican restaurant tour. Turns out, I missed one. On my most recent visit, I discovered Cinco De Mayo quite by accident, and curiosity (and hunger) pulled me in. Tucked just off I-65 near Old Hickory, this place is a bit of a hidden gem. You're not likely to stumble across it unless you're looking--or unless the roadside sign does what it did for me and waves you in like a culinary lighthouse. I stopped in on a Wednesday evening and immediately noticed two things: A) This place is way bigger than it looks from the outside, and B) This place was absolutely hopping. It has that "busy every night" energy--the kind of place that clearly has a loyal following. Inside, it's festive and colorful, with streamers and Mexican-themed décor throughout. There are multiple dining areas, and I was seated (as a party of one) at a table for four on what I assume was the lower level. Plenty of space to stretch out and contemplate life choices...or just the menu. Service started a little slow. After about five minutes, my server (whose name remained a mystery guest star) took my drink and food order and then vanished into the night. He eventually returned with iced tea and chips and salsa. The chips leaned a bit thick for my preference, but the salsa was fresh and flavorful--definitely a strong opening act. The menu is extensive, featuring all the usual Tex-Mex suspects at reasonable prices. Since it was my first visit, I went with a combo plate--the "greatest hits album" approach--to sample a few different items. You'll find all the heavy hitters here: Combo plates for the indecisive (or the strategic) Enchiladas and burritos in multiple variations A surprisingly deep seafood section Chicken dishes, fajitas, and a lineup of specialty items My food arrived in about ten minutes, piping hot and clearly made to order. Everything was solid across the board--no weak links, no surprises, just good, reliable Tex-Mex done right. While dining, I couldn't help but notice the rhythm of the staff. Some were in full hustle mode, keeping things moving efficiently. Others...not so much. My server, for instance, operated more on a "cameo appearance" schedule. My iced tea sat empty long enough to start feeling abandoned before he happened to notice it while tending to another table--one that, incidentally, seemed to get a bit more attention. There's always something satisfying about discovering a spot you didn't know existed--especially when it delivers where it counts. Cinco De Mayo is a solid find with good food and a lively atmosphere. If the service were a bit more dialed in, it could easily move from "good" to "go-to."

The only thing that came out quick were the salsa and chips. The servers were nice but everything took so long. This menu reflects TEX-MEX. Overall, the food was okay. Nothing too special, but also nothing plain terrible. I popped in for lunch recently after wanting to enjoy a bit more than Moe's when the Mexican craving hit. I went to Yelp and ended up here. Sitting at the corner of the plaza, Mexicali Grill has a good sized interior dining room inclusive of a few sections and a bar, then outside they have a nice patio. I landed in one of the booths inside. Service was friendly and helpful. Not very attentive, but when she did stop by, she was pleasant. For lunch I started with a small queso to go along with the chips and salsa. Chips and queso were standard, and salsa had a bit of a kick to it. As I do most times at Mexican spots, I went with the tried and true chicken, cheese and rice, also known as the Mexicali Pollo here. It was sided with tortillas and I went with flour. The chicken was cut and cooked well and presented on a bed of rice then smothered in queso. The dish was okay. The chicken was under-seasoned, so the dish as a whole was a bit underwhelming. The menu is smaller than most Tex-Mex spots, but still offers a variety of house dishes along with the classics. While I understand we are in Brentwood, those prices...small queso ran me $7.50 and my meal was $16.99. Lunch, which included a water, ran me close to $30 before tip. Overall, based on value, Mexicali Grill was not worth it for me. While I will not actively avoid this place, I also will not go out of my way to eat here again.

The veggies were cooked well and not raw like I've had at other restaurants. The corn tortillas tasted like they might be house made and fresh. I also appreciated the salsa bar. The restaurant itself was clean and well decorated. However, the women's bathroom had a bottle of soap that was 95% water and didn't leave my hands feeling very clean. The hand dryer was also unplugged and there were no hand towels. What really brings my review down is the service. The service was definitely subpar. Our waitress was also the bartender and paid more attention to the people at the bar than our table. She didn't check on us throughout our meal, and only refilled my water once when she brought our food out. When we were done, we didn't know if they'd bring a bill to us or if we were suppose to go to the front desk, as she never said anything to us. Every single staff in the restaurant was on their personal phones, leaving the restaurant to take personal calls, and fraternizing more than working. We also witnessed several food safety violations including our waitress sticking her hands in her pants in the back to tuck her shirt, and another waitress playing with her hair excessively, all without washing their hands before interacting with customers again. While good food, I don't know that I'll go back given the experience we had with the staff. I really question cleanliness when behaviors like that are happening in front of customers.

The corn tacos felt and tasted like they were home made which is another huge plus. The only negative about our experience was the service. Our waitress was totally absent and only came to check on us once during our meal. We both sat there with empty drinks and it was the only downside to an otherwise great experience. Another weird thing, the staff were trying to get a specific song to play and kept skipping songs for like 5 minutes straight. Every few skips, they'd run out of songs so we'd have to listen to ads which really threw the vibe off.
