I visited this location with a friend of mine for Saturday lunch. It's on a super cute street with lots of quirky shops to check out (not the greatest hours but to be expected in a smaller town). Once inside we were greeted by a warm, eclectic feel. It really was like being at someone's home. I highly suggest making a reservation (easily done through google). Menu had a nice selection. No pasta dishes sadly the day I was there. We decided to start with the artichoke rice balls after the waitress said it's one of their top items on the menu. For $9 you get 3 balls, kind of surprised but still had high hopes. I was slammed immediately into the first bite with the most pungent blue cheese taste, it totally shocked my palette and was not pleasant or matched well in our opinion. It also was never mentioned in the menu description. For my main meal I ordered the pork roll eggs Benedict which came with breakfast potatoes. My ham literally was cold like it had just been brought out of the fridge, Hollandaise sauce was room temp, over-salted. The breakfast potatoes had to have been batch cooked prior and just nuked in the microwave because they were soggy and just unpleasant to the eye, again over salted too. I couldn't get past 2 bites. I brought the issues up to the waitress, who in turn was very sweet and helpful. She did comp my main meal but not the rice balls, not sure why that was the case but at that point I just wanted to pay and be on my way. Service was pretty slow, it took a while to track down our waitress even for refills for the drinks. She definitely seemed overwhelmed. Took about 20 minutes for initial contact for drinks and another 20 minutes for our order to be taken, Food came out in 10 minutes. He wasn't even the one who brought us or drinks or food. Beef empenadas with chimmi, chicken spring roll and meatball. The star was the empenada, but my wife swooned about the spring roll. The meatball with ricotta was nice but not warm enough to swoon over. I had the Ropa Vieja for dinner and the flavors melded together perfectly. I'll dream of this meal. My wife had the dirty gnocchi ... Which are gnocchi in name only. Really like nothing she ever had before and when the leftovers were heated up the next day they were even better. We celebrated our anniversary here and were very disappointed in the food. Small portions for the price. Salad and/or bread does not come with the meals. The octopus was very chewy and tough and the tiny bit of potatoes and spinach were salty. On a positive note-our server, Stevie, was AMAZING! Very attentive and friendly. Bordentown for some reason still hasn't gotten the credit it deserves for its food scene. For years it's hosted some great restaurants and Under The Moon Cafe is one of them. From the moment you enter, the hipster decor will grab you and let you know you're in for a unique experience. The walls are lined with interesting art and the restaurant itself is on the darker side. I came here for brunch on a Sunday and the experience was perfect. I had an order of beef empanadas that were exceptional. Incredibly fresh, fried perfectly and came with a side of chimi churri. I then had the banana stuffed French toast which was delicious. It even came with more bananas on top. Also had a side of Mac n cheese which was also delicious. In addition to great food, the service was excellent. It's also a byo, which makes for the perfect brunch. This place is definitely a must and one I'll be back to for sure. read more

I ordered a shaved Brussels and Arugula salad with grilled chicken which was delicious however not worth $25.00. There was barely any greens ( which they charge $14 for) and the chicken was maybe 2 ounces worth, for an additional $10. I have no problem paying for quality food, but this is robbing your customers. Having grown up in the food business, I understand charging for quality and labor, but this salad should not cost more than $12 and you are still making a ton of profit. Hard working family owned, small ( lack of better words because it is very charming) "hole in the wall" Continental/ Peruvian / South American dishes. Simple delicious & home made. When we arrive at the restuarant, the young lady at the front said "would you like to place and order to go" to me this was weird. My friend and I look at each other and said no, we were planning on dining in. For me, the more appropriate thing to say was, will you be dining in or ordering to go. Making an assumption like that can sometimes make someone fell like they are unwelcomed. However, the gentleman who was close by was so friendly and welcoming we decided to stay. The decor of this place is actually very charming and interesting. I normally dont go for the little of this little of that feel, but for this place, it really worked. My favorite part of the decor where the tables that were made out of old sewing machine tables. Yes, the were functioning. We spent most of the dinner rocking the medals back and forth. The food overall is as really good. The tapas really gives you the opportunity to try a variety of items from the menu for a reasonable price. Some portions are really small. We got 4 tapas for $30. The best of the 4 was 100% the pork belly followed by the shrimp. The porkbelly was cooked perfectly and had really good flavor. There were only two pieces. It would have felt better with four. The shrimp was also really yummy, with about 5 pieces. It may look like four in the picture, but one is hiding under the other. The chorizo was ok. We felt that it was a little overcooked, because it was much more chewy that expected. The wild mushrooms was just not a hit at all because it was sweet from the wine reduction. We wouldn't order that again and certainly wouldn't recommend it. The salads were also great. They have an amazing goat cheese that they use. Last but not least was dessert. The tres leche cream pie was AMAZING. Hella pricey, but it was sp good you find look past the fact that you are playing almost $10 for a slice. read more

My Daughter and I stopped here on Father's Day. Bordentown is a pretty little town and the town center/main street is pretty cool. There are some funky shops and restaurants and parking is easy. Under the moon is a cozy little restaurant and has a nice sort of shabby chic, eclectic vibe. There is a lot if stuff going on, but it all works and it look really inviting. It was such a nice day, we chose to sit outside. We were sort of having a late lunch so we just ordered a salad and 2 Tapas/small plates: Arugula Salad -Topped with shaved Serrano ham, and shredded asiago cheese with freshly squeezed lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil. This was very nice and refreshing salad. We enjoyed this very muc Albondigas - Two Spanish style meatballs served over tomato sauce - This was not bad. The meatballs were bland but the sauce had a nice flavor. Gambas al Ajillo -Petite shrimp, sauteed with slivered garlic white wine and spices - This was a good dish with a very tasty garlic sauce and spices. I want to start off by saying that this place was very cute and it looked very clean given everything going on with the pandemic I think that cleanliness is obviously very important. The staff was somewhat friendly but definitely not rude. I ordered the waffle with fruit and ice cream and I asked for a side of maple syrup. The waffle was squishy and not very good. And the syrup was awful. Everyone around us seem to have ordered the breakfast empanadas so maybe that's just what I should have ordered. We finally made it back after our first visit more than 2 years ago which was dessert only. On that trip we ate outside due to a live performance happening and the fact that to eat inside we'd have to order off of a very specific menu. It was late summer and evening, so sweets in the fresh night air was a perfect choice. From that first time on we had been trying to get back for a proper meal. This past weekend our schedules aligned and we went to celebrate T's bday. The decor is very cute, with many antiques and ornate tin ceiling. But to be honest, the 2 seater tables which happen to ALL be the old fashioned pedal sewing machines are not comfortable for patrons with long legs and torsos. We were first seated near the center of the room, and without pushing my chair far away and into traffic I could find no way to get either leg under it. I asked to be moved but it was the same type of table, due to a different chair and location I was able to place my extremities on the outside and straddled it the whole time I was there. We studied the online menu but still had a hard time deciding among all of the options. Trish went for the risotto of the day( wild mushroom) and I ordered the gnocchi dish. To share we selected their spinach salad and from the tapas menu the tortilla espanol. First came an excellent olive and herb bread along with olive tapenade to spread on it. Normally I'm not a fan of either but the spread was more pesto tasting than olivey. The bread was phenomenal, no bitter taste and very dense. The tapas dish was comparable to a potato quiche, served with a tasty pepper aioli, even T, who is not a potato fan enjoyed it. Our salads were thick neatly stacked rounds of fresh spinach that were topped with Asian pear slices and goat cheese and spiced pecans and very little dressing. Both portions were of a nice size that caused me to wonder if this was 2 salads( happily it was not) The risotto was perfectly cooked and flavored with large mushroom pieces and a drizzle of truffle oil, very good. And the gnocchi dish was just as good if not better, tender slices of chicken in a mild Gorgonzola sauce with cherry toms and spinach mixed in. We agreed that we would order either or both again. We skipped dessert this time because they were out of the peanut butter pie, but I regret that now and should have ordered one of the crepe cakes. Dessert really is a must here. Based on food and decor alone this review would be verging on 5 stars, but service was a bit spotty. We were asked for our order a few minutes after being seated( at second table) and needed a bit more time to decide. We were ready a few minutes later but our server took many more than that to return. They were not short staffed, in fact there must have been at least 5 employees working the front of house. At the end of our meal our check was wrong too, we were probably given one from a different table. It seemed to take another several minutes to correct this. Lastly, and I feel old saying this.... but when I'm in a " better" restaurant with an attractive female, I do NOT think it is good service to be addressed as guys. This happened several times and by most of the staff. If I'm at a bar with a buddy it's ok, on a romantic dinner date it is not. Overall we were pleased with our meals and with the ambiance that the owners created in this restaurant. Much thought went into all of it and the food coming out was nicely done too. This place is excellent! The whole atmosphere is extremely cozy. Everything from the plates and mason jars and other utensils are all mismatched, which gives it a cool boho, eclectic look. The food was amazing! I started off with the beef empanadas which were packed with flavor! It had a nice kick and the empanadas were decently sized. For my appetizer I went with the Trenton burger. The waitress said all of the burgers were made in house so I had to check it out for myself. It was excellently made! Huge 10 oz burger (very soft to bite into), fluffy egg, delicious Taylor ham/pork roll, and the best truffle fries on the side! I yearned for more with each bite. I was eyeing the brunch menu as well as the gnocchi, so I'll have to come back and try more another time. They are known for their desserts but when we were there, there wasn't a whole lot in the dessert case. Still though, I decided to try the chocolate mousse. It was to die for! Very rich in chocolate flavor. The only thing I thought could be different about the place were that the prices could be altered; I felt that the cost for 2 empanadas and a cup of chocolate mousse was a tad overpriced (all desserts are set at $9). There really is no going wrong here whether you choose to fill your table with tapas or play it safe with classics like baked mac and cheese or a HUGE juicy burger. Prices are a little higher for what's familiar in the area but the quality of the food as well as the portion sizes justify the cost! Fiesta, Fiesta. Yes ma, it's a, Fiesta..... at Under the Moon Cafe in Bordentown, NJ. On a beautiful fall Saturday evening #squad and I stumbled into Under the Moon in search of some delicious Latin cuisine, and surprisingly enough our curiosity was rewarded. Not being locals we were unaware that this was a hot spot, where if you show up on a Saturday evening for dinner it would behoove you to have a reservation. Luckily for us our incredibly awesome waitress Tina worked some magic and squeezed us in a two top so we didn't have to wait a couple of hours for something to open up. Walking through this down home enigmatic Latin joint you can't help but notice the beautiful wooden tables and hand carved ceilings; which immediately gives you a feeling that you are in store for something special. I wasn't exactly sure what that was but as Tina went through the specials for the night and giving the menu a once over, I started to get an idea that there wouldn't be much, if any disappointment coming out of the kitchen. We decided to just order a bunch of tapas to get a feel for the place. Corn brûlée, chicken teriyaki spring rolls, beef empanadas, stuffed shrimp, and boneless short rib tostadas made the cut and arrived shortly after we polished of the delicious complimentary garlic toast and chimichurri. Without further ado let me get to these amazingly sabor tapas. The boneless short rib tostadas were braised fucking fall-apart-in-yo-mouth perfectly. It was dressed with pico, roasted garlic, and lime aioli. This exemplary flavor profile danced around my taste buds like diamonds on an Audemars Piguet. The crab stuffed shrimp in horseradish pesto cream sauce was another exercise in flawless execution. As I started spooning left over pesto cream in my mouth all I could hear was Post Malone singing "I'm saucin, I'm saucin, I'm saucin on you!" The corn brûlée topped with caramelized leeks was another immaculate dish. The chef should give a class on this one because the light airy soufflé was spot on in texture and taste, as the leeks added a whole other dimension of salty crispness. So....... chicken teriyaki spring rolls? Really though? Yes, as out of place as they sound, in coincidently, this dish turned out to be a complete mind fuck. I thought I was sneaking in some Far East; the whole while I was being led right back to south of the border. The asian veg, corn, black beans, and wasabi aoli interpolating with the marinated chicken made a hell of a case for a southwest roll. The beef empanadas, the main reason #squad wanted to come here, would have made any Latin mother proud. Perfectly crisp dough, and exquisite meat filing made for an almost 10 out of 10 effort. I'd say it was a 9 only because of my utter disdain for olives that were incorporated into the filing. After destroying our tapas with extreme prejudice; Tina came back around to see if we were ready for dessert and coffee. Admittedly I rarely order dessert and didn't plan on deviating from that mindset, but I would be a damn fool to not at least entertain the thought based on the quality of food I was just served. She rattled off at least 6 mouthwatering in-house desserts, which made me wonder if they had a Cake Boss contestant held hostage back there, because to have such a varied number of in-house delicacies at such a small restaurant just seemed illogical. Nonetheless, we decided to take home some French Toast bread pudding. It wasn't as good as it sounds though, it was so much better! The homemade whipped cream merged symbiotically into the moist bread, and hinted accents of vanilla and cinnamon running wild didn't hurt either. Under the Moon Cafe went above and beyond with their food as well as their service. It's easy to see why this Cafe's reservation book stays full, so if you're in the Bordentown area with a craving for Latin do yourself a favor and stop here. It's a cool restaurant with many different colors and pillows. It was decorated nice for Christmas. Everyone's silverware and glassware were different. The food was great, I recommend the tapas, they have a pick 3 and pick 4 deal. The soda was very flat. The bathroom was nice and big, but no paper towels or way to dry hands. I say surprisingly because of the exceptional quality of the food and artistic presentation I thought we would be waiting much longer & would have been happy to. We were expecting we may miss our movie, but we were able to make our 7 o clock show! Took about an hour or a little less for this dining experience. I meant to take photos of our food, but enjoyed eating so much, that I forgot as I oohed & ahhhed after every bite! The brownie & coconut cream pie desserts were unbelievable! Can tell the chef prepares everything homemade & fresh! The chicken roll app blew our minds & our dinners (gnocchi & chicken dish) were so good I can't put into words! The only thing is I didn't get to try the beef empanadas as requested but figure I may have confused the waitress with too much conversation.
