This was by far the worst pepperoni Sicilian slice I've had since moving to NYC. There wasn't much pepperoni, and the ones on that were on there were thin and lacking. The cheese was awful - no idea what kind it was or if it was a blend, but it tasted sour. The only saving grace on this slice was the bread/crust. The bread was airy and light, which made it easier to choke this slice down. The crust was caramelized (with cheese?) which was by far the tastiest part of this slice. Reading the reviews of Upside Pizza, I can with 100% confidence say that yelp is not to be trusted. And that most reviewers have palates akin to common sewer rats. I have no idea what they're stuffing into their presumably fat faces that obscure their ability to read or interpret. Why this pizza shop is rated below Joe's by the slice of Times Square is a vicious crime that owes its success to Joe's reputation which precedes the disgusting burnt pieces of dough that they serve in their uptown location. NYC slices have a classic-ness to them. Thin, but not midwest bar-pie cracker thin, with enough leavening to produce a crispy english muffin like core that is bagel chewy, a crust that is pliable and chewy and none of that completely burnt frozen pizza flavor like how Joe's by the slice of Times Square does it. And then you have these idiots complaining about the price of a slice and comparing this spot to a $1 pizza spot. They're comparing Upside pizza who used Roberta's original pizzamaker to create their pizza against a nasty dollar slice of pizza. Compared to other pizzas in the area, this one doesn't excel but it does get the job done. It's a convenient grab and go joint. The pizzas are already done, so they just take your slice and warm it back up in the ovens. It's solid. They do offer this Detroit style that does that style of pizza a disservice. Really great pizza. I've always passed by this pizza shop but never went in. Getting caught in the rain the other day finally brought me inside. Standing room only with a couple of stand up tables. Staff is really nice and light hearted, making funny jokes with customers. I got the Sicilian pepperoni slice. Love the thickness and crunch of the crust with just the right amount of fresh sauce, cheese, and pepperoni. I had one slice and was pretty full but definitely could have gone for a second. Went Sat Feb 23rd after reading about it in NYT earlier in the week. It was late, rainy and cold. There is nowhere to eat inside, which is absurd but being near the Port Authority not unusual. I got two plain slices. I'm a lifelong native New Yorker and pizza is my favorite food, and this wasnt good pizza. It's like the cheese was old or something, it just turned to mush in my mouth rather than having a bit of chewiness like fresh cheese should. The crust was good. I tasted no tomato flavor, and overall I would describe the slice as extremely bland. Ultimate dis, I gave the 2nd slice to a homeless guy and went and got a hot dog up the street. Maybe I'll try it again one day but for now, avoid until they figure out these growing pains. read more

Hailing from Uptown, I have eaten my far share of 2 bros pizza. But don't be fooled, this is different. The pizza in my opinion is substantially better. The options are plentiful and the toppings are spot on. They definitely have a 90s vibe which I dig and at least for now it is noticeably cleaner than other establishments. Plus the staff was friendly but not in your face. I took a star off just due to the limited space and lack of proper flow. They need a sign indicating in otherwise wild folks are coming at you from all directions. For a non assuming shop in midtown west of all places (dangerously close to Times Sq at that )- Upside pizza is slinging some solid slices. Especially the specialty slices like the wine marinated mushroom white slice. Sure it's more expensive than some other casual shops but in my opinion completely justifiable paying the extra dollars for quality ingredients made the right way. The shop has some nostalgic New York sports nods that I personally appreciate. Also it's not some pretentious tourist trap doing things for Instagram traffic - they keep it simple you go grab a couple of slices inhale them while standing in New York fashion and keep it moving. They make fresh mozzarella and use quality ingredients to create the perfect dough and crust - a slice like this is hard to come by these days! I visited this location between the hours of 12am to 3am and the cashier worker and another guy who worked to the right side of the store and was making pizza dough was horrible!!
